Finance minister says launch of 5G wireless network will help raise people's quality of life - Duration: 0:49.
South Korea's finance minister says the 5G wireless network, which will be launched in
Korea next month, will help improve people's quality of life.
At a meeting Wednesday on innovative growth strategy, Minister Hong Nam-ki said the government's
tax incentives and R&D investment in the 5G wireless network have been fruitful and that
the country's top three mobile carriers will invest more than 2-point-six billion U.S.
dollars in 5G this year.
He added that the government has chosen the first two locations for the establishment
of smart industrial zones: Changwon in Gyeongsangnam-do province, and Banwol Sihwa in Gyeonggi-do
province.
The government's plan is to create 10 smart industrial complexes by 2022 as part of efforts
to boost manufacturing competitiveness.

Negotiators of North Korea, U.S. expected to arrive in Hanoi on Wednesday - Duration: 0:51.
The negotiators of North Korea and the U.S. are expected to arrive in the summit host
city, Hanoi, today.
According to Seoul-based YTN, Pyeongyang's Special representative on U.S. Affairs, Kim
Hyok-chol is expected to board a plane from Beijing to Hanoi in about 30 minutes, putting
him in the Vietnamese capital later in the evening.
The U.S. State Department also said Stephen Biegun, Washington's special representative
for North Korea, was already on his way to Hanoi Tuesday afternoon.
There is no direct flight from Washington to Hanoi, so Biegun is expected to transfer
in Tokyo, Beijing or Hong Kong.
It's hard to say when he'll arrive, but U.S. officials were seen at the VIP terminal in
Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport from early Wednesday morning... prompting speculation
that Biegun could also arrive today.

President Moon holds luncheon meeting with former activists of 1980 Gwangju.. - Duration: 0:45.
President Moon Jae-in held a lunch meeting at the Blue House today with victims of the
1980 military crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Gwangju.
In attendance were 14 senior citizens from Gwangju, all of whom were impacted by the
crackdown, along with some of President Moon's top aides.
According to the Blue House the luncheon was an opportunity for the President to listen
to public sentiment and opinions from the Gwangju region while also renewing the government's
determination to preserve and pass on the spirit of the 1980 democratization movement.
Just a couple of days ago, President Moon blasted several opposition lawmakers who made
controversial remarks about the pro-democracy movement, claiming it was organized by North
Korea.

So the world will be watching Hanoi next week ahead of and during the Kim-Trump summit.
Many Vietnamese are proud to be hosting such an important meeting.
Why, though, did North Korea and the U.S. choose Vietnam?
And what lessons could the country have for the North?
Oh Jung-hee has this report.
Vietnam is geographically close enough to North Korea that the North Korean leader can
fly there.
And it has diplomatic ties with both Pyeongyang and Washington.
These are the reasons why the Southeast Asian country was chosen as the venue for the second
Kim-Trump summit -- but there is another reason why Hanoi was an attractive choice.
The U.S.-Vietnam history plays a part here.
Vietnam and the U.S. fought in a war from 1965 until 1975.
But their hostile relations came to an end as they established diplomatic relations in
1995, 10 years after Vietnam started its Doi Moi economic reforms.
In 2000, Vietnam and the U.S. signed a bilateral trade agreement, which expanded Hanoi's overseas
trade.
Hanoi succeeded in developing a free market economy, while keeping a single-party communist
system.
Hanoi has been willing to share its development experience with North Korea -- and Pyeongyang
sent its foreign minister last year to study the Vietnamese model.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that...
Pyeongyang could replicate Hanoi's path to normal relations with the U.S. and to prosperity.
Kim and Trump's choice of Vietnam shows that they're willing to end their hostilities and
start a new relationship.
But more importantly, Trump is making another promise that once Pyeongyang follows through
on its commitment to denuclearize, what's to come next is the 'economic bright future'
-- that Kim Jong-un desires.
Kim's aim of developing the North's economy could be even more evident during his state
visit to Vietnam, where he'll be touring key industrial facilities near the capital, while
strengthening relations with the Vietnamese government.

Businesses community welcomes looser limits on work hours - Duration: 1:55.
South Korea's putting into place tighter limits on the number of hours companies can make
their employees work each week.
There have been complaints, though, that the cap on hours is too strict for some of them.
Yesterday, labor, management and government reached an agreement to give companies more
flexibility.
The reaction has been mixed, as our Ko Roon-hee reports.
It's a new move for South Korea to successfully implement the shortened 52-hour cap on weekly
working hours.
The Economic, Social and Labor Council announced on Tuesday...that representatives from labor,
management and government reached an agreement to revise the flexible work hours system.
Specific changes include expanding the application period.
For companies that can't meet the working hour limit every week, the new change will
allow them spread the hours over a period of six-months, up from the current three-months.
This is beneficial for businesses with peak seasons that last longer than three months.
Korea's business community has welcomed the news.
The Korea Employers Federation said it was glad to see a social consensus and believed
the move will improve the business environment in the nation.
The Korea Federation of SMEs said they are relieved to see the agreement,... but emphasized
the importance of taking further steps.
The outcome of the discussion will be used by the National Assembly to amend related
legislation...and the federation said it's important to move quickly.
Other organizations, such as Korea Economic Research Institute, said the agreement is
expected to encourage further conversations between labor and management...but added the
six-month period is still short compared to other advanced countries.
However, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions criticized the agreement...saying it
does not include clear measures to protect workers' wages.
