How to use GROW and the phrasal verb GROW UP - Duration: 9:50.

Do plants grow or grow up?

And what about children?

In this video you're going to learn how we use these two verbs and fix some very common

mistakes.

Grow has several different but similar meanings, so let's start with some examples.

What things grow?

Plants grow.

They get bigger and taller.

And animals grow, for example puppies.

They grow a lot in the first six months.

And children.

They're always growing.

Hey, you've grown since I last saw you.

You always say that Vicki.

It's true.

Yeah.

So we were talking about height here - how tall he is.

Do you know how tall you are?

Well actually, I am almost five feet tall like an adult.

OK so that's the first meaning of grow – get bigger and taller.

So what else grows?

A queue or a line of people can grow.

The population of a country of city can grow.

Companies can grow.

Their sales can grow, and perhaps their profits too.

Our profits have grown by 50% this year so we're doing very well.

So in these examples, grow means increase in size and number.

OK, here's another common meaning of grow.

It can mean become.

I think it's going to rain.

Really?

Yeah, the sky's growing dark.

Oh yeah.

So here growing means 'gradually beginning to do something'.

We use 'grow' like this with adjectives, so we can grow bored, we can grow impatient,

and we can grow excited.

These are all things that happen over a period of time and growing means becoming.

Great.

Now you know the main meanings of grow, so what about grow up.

This is a phrasal verb and we use it to talk about human beings.

When we develop from a child into an adult, we grow up.

I grew up in Brooklyn in New York, but now I live in Philadelphia.

So Jay is talking about the time in his life when he was becoming an adult here.

Another example.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a pilot.

So you want to fly planes?

Yes.

'When you grow up' means, 'when you become an adult'.

Of course some people never really grow up.

Oh grow up Jay!

So here's a phrase we use when we want someone to behave in a more mature and responsible

way.

Now, if someone has grown from a child into an adult, we can say they've grown up.

Parents might say they have grown-up children.

'Grown-up' is an adjective and we use it to describe fully developed and mature adults.

And 'grown-up' can also be a noun.

A grown-up is another way of saying an adult.

But it's a childish way of speaking.

It's a word we use when we're talking with children.

So I'm a grown-up.

Yeah.

Karate.

Karate.

Yeah, right.

Grow is an irregular verb – grow, grew, grown.

But there's something else you should know.

Have a look at this example.

Is grow a transitive or intransitive verb here?

It's intransitive which means there's no object.

The population doesn't grow something.

It just grows.

And what about this example?

Same thing.

No object.

OK, one more.

Ah, this one's different.

There's an object here.

We're growing something.

We're growing lots of flowers on the deck this year.

I'm growing geraniums in this pot and look at these little plants.

I've grown them all from seed.

They're wild flowers.

So grow can be an intransitive or a transitive verb.

It depends what we're talking about, but with plants it can be either.

We can say 'We grow plants' or 'Plants grow'.

There are a few other things like this.

Bacteria for example.

Bacteria can grow or we can grow bacteria.

And then there's our hair and nails.

We can say our hair grows and we can also say we're growing our hair - allowing it

to get longer.

And finger nails.

Our nails grow but we can also grow our nails.

Another thing - beards.

I'm not going to shave today.

Really?

Yes, I'm thinking of growing a beard.

What do you think?

I don't think it's a good idea.

What do you think?

So growing a beard means allowing your beard to grow.

Now what about that other verb - grow up?

Is it transitive or intransitive or both?

Let's see.

Have a look at this example.

What do you think?

It's intransitive here.

There's no object.

Are you thinking, but what about Brooklyn, Vicki?

Yeah, but notice that word 'in'.

There's no direct object here.

'Grow up' is not followed directly by a noun.

Another example.

Transitive or intransitive?

Intransitive again.

'Grow up' is always intransitive.

We grow up, but we can't grow up something.

Remember that if you can because students often make mistakes with that.

We grow up, but we can't grow up something.

I have three questions for you.

First one.

Are these two sentences correct?

The first one is correct but the second one is wrong.

We only use 'grow up' to talk about children.

It means develop into an adult and become mature.

We could say this though, but here 'up' would go with the wall.

It's not the phrasal verb 'grow up'.

OK, second question.

Are these sentences correct?

Yes, they're both correct, but they mean different things.

'The children grew' means they got bigger and taller.

'The children grew up' means they became adults.

OK last one.

What do you think?

Are they correct?

The first one is correct but the second one is wrong.

When we're talking about height we use grow.

Grow up is about becoming more mature and we just grow up.

We don't grow up something.

The Metaphysical Cause of Cancer

When my sister developed cancer earlier this year, I was anxious to discover the metaphysical

cause of the disease.

I have always believed that disease manifests on an energetic or emotional level first and

then onto a physical level.

In an energetic Universe, this theory holds true for the creation of everything and everyone.

Louise Hay, who is an expert on the metaphysical causes of disease states that cancer is often

a product of unresolved fears or traumas.

According to her book, �You Can Heal Your Life�, Cancer is caused by:

�Deep hurt.

Longstanding resentment.

Deep secret or grief eating away at the self.

Carrying hatreds.�

Louise herself developed cancer and pinpointed the spiritual and emotional cause to the childhood

abuse that she had never worked through.

It was only once she worked through the trauma and emotions that bubbled within her that

she was able to fully eradicate the cancer from her body.

There are countless stories such as these, and I myself have always looked for the emotional

and energetic cause whenever disease comes my way, but when my sister was diagnosed with

cancer I was at a bit of a loss.

I understood that it was her journey to go through, but at the same time none of the

metaphysical causes stated by Louise or other metaphysicians seemed to resonate.

My sister had never experienced a dramatic trauma in her life and she also struggled

to resonate with the descriptions that I found and read to her.

She even saw a holistic counsellor that took her on meditative journeys and received regular

counselling from a psychologist, but her mental health and state of mind always came back

as being extremely healthy and positive.

After months of pondering, I decided that I had to let it go and allow my sister to

work things out for herself.

If there were some unresolved emotions lurking in the past, I had to allow her to go through

the process.

That opportunity never really came however, as just a few short months after being diagnosed

she passed away.

It all was very sudden and abrupt.

This got me thinking even more about the deeper cause behind cancer and as I was drifting

off to sleep one night, the answer floated into my mind.

Souls that develop cancer are highly evolved, advanced souls that are healers.

The cancer comes to remind them of their healing abilities or to allow those around them to

heal through their experience.

Souls that develop cancer have agreed to sacrifice a lot in order to help the spiritual advancement

of those around them and those in their soul group.

In doing so, they also advance their own soul and are able to bring their healing powers

to the world.

After hearing this message I wondered if I just wanted to believe it because it was my

sister and it made me feel better, but when I started looking at other people in my life

that had cancer and the affect on those around them, it started to really resonate with me.

Cancer is one of those diseases that brings out the true nature in people.

It forces the person and those involved to deal with a host of issues such as death,

fear, pain, anxiety, stress but also love.

I used to ask my sister constantly to describe how she was feeling and while fear was present,

she often commented that she felt much more love.

In fact, one of the only times I saw her cry through this journey was when she was expressing

her gratitude for all the love she had received after being diagnosed.

Her diagnosis brought my entire family together and acted as a catalyst to mend strained relationships

and grudges that were decades old.

There is no doubt that part of her purpose was as a healer.

Aside from what I witnessed with my sister, here is what I believe to be the metaphysical

causes of cancer:

1.

Cancer occurs in advanced souls who have come to heal, it is through their journey with

the disease that they are able to deliver healing energy to those around them.

This healing can happen on a spiritual, emotional and even physical level, it can also occur

directly or indirectly.

2.

Cancer can also occur when a healer needs to be reminded of their gifts.

Often through their journey with cancer they are reunited with their healing abilities,

this can happen on both a conscious and subconscious level.

3.

Cancer does not always have to be linked to an individual trauma, rather it can indicate

a deep healing that involves an entire soul group.

When someone develops develops cancer, it acts as an awakening and healing process for

other members of the same soul group.

This healing process can be a product of multiple lifetimes and can also take multiple lifetimes.

Metaphysical Explanations of Specific Physical Aches, Pains and Sicknesses

While everyone�s journey with cancer will be different and will stir different emotions

for different people, at the end of the day I believe that cancer is a sign of an advanced

soul with healing abilities that has either gone on this journey to help heal others,

or needs to be reminded of their own

healing abilities.

2016 and you'll see they are almost non-existent

Fast-forward to now and they are the top-selling item under toys and games on Amazon

It's the trendiest toy of its kind that we've seen in a long time

But is it just a toy?

various models purport a variety of benefit including help with

concentration relief from anxiety

And even a reduction in the symptoms of autism

So if these fidget spinners are as beneficial as they say why are they being banned in classrooms all across the United States?

Can they really help your brain the way they say they can first let's examine. Why we fidget surprisingly?

this is a hard thing to do because

Fidgeting behavior is largely unstudied what we can say is that several studies have reported

Benefits and fidgeting behavior in cases where subjects suffer from Adhd or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder Adhd?

Is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing Pattern of inattention or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning or learning?

But there is evidence that excess gross motor activity or hyperactivity is actually a mechanism that helps those with Adhd

concentrate this hyperactivity and early childhood is usually an indicator of Adhd and until recently fidgety or

Reckless Behavior has been viewed as an impediment to concentration and working memory working memory is the brain's ability to process information

In the moment the more efficient our brains working memory is operating the better

We learn in studies conducted where subjects with ADhd were allowed to engage in hyperactive behavior

Their working memory visibly improved that is when they were allowed to fidget. They were better at learning these studies proposed an interesting theory

Hyperactive tendencies are away for people with ADHD

To cope with their disorder and to concentrate better that is through fidgeting you

Occupy the part of your brain that is driving you to distraction engaging in a mundane and thoughtless

Task like tapping your foot or fidgeting with a paper clip

Satisfies this need for Diversion without actually distracting the part of your brain that is trying to pay attention

Thus allowing you to concentrate one largely accepted

Theory is that humans

ADHD prone or not cannot devote 100% of their working memory to a single

Task this actually has to do with the way our brains of all imagine being a caveman

They wouldn't really believe you to focus all your attention on bashing rocks together as some giant beast could be lurking behind you about to

Bite your head off in other words being constantly distracted is a survival technique. It keeps us alert and safe

We wouldn't want to get rid of it or turn it off not entirely

But we would want to occupy it from time to time if we really needed to concentrate on something say building a fire

We wouldn't want to be comfortable looking over our shoulder. Let in our focus wander

So we occupy our hyperactive brain with some simple thoughtless tasks like tapping our foot in other words

We fidget some have theorized this is a link between the use of voter skills and learning a study done recently

Found that students absorb information better while taking notes by hand

Rather than using a laptop and some fidget spinner companies have jumped on the study and used it as evidence that the use of motor

Skills enhances the learning process and what could be better at utilizing your motor skills than a brand spanking new fidget spinner

But this motor skills lead to better learning theory is most likely wrong

What researchers did find is that while those students taking notes with a pencil and paper took far less notes than the students using laptops?

the pencil and paper group were far better at understanding and

Conceptually applying the material being taught however much to the Chagrin of fidget spinner distributors everywhere

research has concluded that this wasn't because the students were using their hands or utilizing more of their motor functions instead they reason that the

Pen and paper group had to process the information as it was being given to them so they could

Summarize it having to condense the material force the students to absorb the information

And they were more likely to retain it

But the question remains do fidget spinners actually help us learn after all there are benefits to fidgeting and concentration is one of them

So could they help those with certain disorders learn better the answer is probably not while fidgety may help people with certain to soar

and maybe an evolutionary necessity in the general population

You're probably much better off with a pencil or tapping your foot than a fidget spanner

The thing is in almost every study that touts the benefits of what we define as fidgeting that fidgeting

Behavior is nowhere near as complicated as the operation of a fidget spinner while a fidget spinner might seem pretty simple it requires hand-eye coordination

Which means it's a visual distraction you have to balance it you have to hold on to it

You have to keep it spinning ultimately this demands too much of your attention

And you were distracted from what you're actually trying to pay attention to remember the whole theory behind the benefits of fidgeting

Depends on being able to free up your brain so you can focus on a subject and learn if you have to consciously think about

The fidgeting then all the benefits are lost so next time you're about to click on and buy that

2017 titanium alloy triangle Rainbow fidget spinner you might as well just get some pencils and paper or just a rock or something

BIG MONEY CHING, CHING | Kindergarten Pt.8 - Duration: 15:01.

hello everyone it's me Jayskibean and welcome back to kindergarten yay all right so

last episode we got Nuggets quest finished actually and this episode I am

going to try to do Monty's so we're going to look at the head see look at

all this glorious hits that I have completed so now we're on Monty's yeah

it's a suspicious feeling that Lily's quest line is actually the final one but

anyway there's like a see three two one and then most people have six so one two

three four five six oh so there's one final hint right there

that we don't know about so um anyway Monty said you have to have as much

money as you can carry so what I'm going to do is I am gonna go get all the money

I can I'm going to do that right meow so I'm gonna start a new day kindergarten

i'ma spin the whole day just getting money so here's how I'm going to do it

first I'm going to eat these and I'm going to get I'm going to get we'll have

to get the yo-yo because I have to distract the teacher to leave the room

with the whole hall passing so I can get the money from the janitor but I want to

be able to steal the money for the room itself - uh hmm so anyway that's correct

good with you I feel like it's way less I don't need anything else I feel like

it's way less trouble just to just to get the janitors money over and over

again some you do that go find a partner what I'll do you mean this yo-yo yeah

okay sure alright so anyway um I'll see you guys next Monday okay and we're back

alright so I got all the money I can carry ten dollars right y'all bow ten

dollars now what else did I need I need all the money I can carry and a special

item from Jerome so I need the mold in the ten dollars so I am going to just

grab the mold real quick along with the ten dollars I have point because it said

that's all I need what is this this is the Wizard worm card not to be confused

with the mage maggot or the source for a serpent okay I didn't I've never read

that before okay so we're going to start the day with $10 which would bring me

down to five cuz I gotta get some of the money

down and messing with audio etc so okay that was pretty easy fix just reboot the

whole time your computer okay stop talking about that slow scary so I'm

gonna tell him to make me the mold I'm gonna buy the yo-yo on the buy the yo-yo

because I got to get the janitors money don't need anything else so I only need

the pit so he'll buy the pills wonder what else he'll buy so he will buy the

pills for sure um we were just talking about um principles for ridden know

whatever got it good question fine okay now we're in the first now we're right

back where we work kind of told us so I'm not sad we're listening okay give me

pills okay okay and I feel good I can do that yes sir okay welcome back I hope

everything turned out okay more than okay

oh really yes sure whatever I need you to be drugged up so I can steal this

money anyway sounds so bad okay well you're gonna be my morning buddy wait is

she yeah I do need help because I need the hall pass I want to know I want to

sell stuff not buy stuff sell bottle kills the whole bottle pills yeah buddy

can I go out so this is gonna take one Apple I mean this yo-yo like what okay

sure I can do that got it I'm ready it's going to distract

a high teacher so I need to take that money so I need to go here show you the

this is more money than what he had his thingy anyway so here we go there's a

you gotta get back to class okay no I didn't get it so what else can I

sell to him then besides the pills hmm I don't know I

really have no idea what else I can get I couldn't get it

pills in the chocolate bar or most expensive oh where do I get the

if I have then I forgot it which isn't unlikely because I forget a lot of stuff

alright so I'm going to bring the mold to school with the ten dollars and I'm

gonna go make some moolah perfect so I got this down I got this I said to grab

something else for show-and-tell which means I'll probably just grab the

stuff from lunch hey man not so fast little dude sweet let's get the money

so I got to get slop from from lunch then hey man duper the Bell

go back to class well did you get it that's lunch time

buddies okay kids we all heard lunch fellas to the cafeteria yeah bud the hey

over here and I'm going to be like man it's pretty cool he doesn't he said she

can keep the pass it's a pretty easy sell right there sells something I got a

Hall Pass oh snap there you go cool beans

Oh see ya see ya Lily bye Lily this sub buttocks my dog's name is Lily and a

couple characters in games have been playing recently his name is Ben Lily

yes please there you go buddy buddy boy all right cool we should be

and now we should I should be good right yes yes huh now hopefully he doesn't get

whatever you plan on doing with this key be careful something fishy's going on at

been a pleasure yeah that wasn't bad that was bad now I

had the principal's key which means more than likely next episode is gonna be the

best the best the end the hit probably the best too

we're gonna find out a lot so I'm going to look at the hints I'm gonna see what

all I have to do for Lily's story you need the special items from Monty nugget

and bugs and cigarettes you device cigarettes so we already have step one

and two down all right sweet this is the key to the principal's office I can use

it to get into the office but I should only do that when I know it's empty

perfect awesome okay so anyway that means next episode we're going to be

able to do Lily's mission and possibly in the game I don't know

we'll see well finally get to figure out the mystery behind Billy which out know

if you guys noticed but in the principal's office on the bottom right

hand corner there is there's like a rug with blood coming from underneath it

there's like claw marks leading from the front of his desk - you probably thought

I didn't notice it because I never called attention to it until now but

it's definitely there and it's fishy I'm pretty sure Billy's like underneath his

office or something but anyway I gotta finish the episode up here I hope you

to do today but first I have to empty the dishwasher because my mom went to

the market and I know when she comes back home she's not going to want to

deal with a mess of dishes so I'm going to wash them. Empty the dishwasher and

and she brought some her leftovers from the market there's not that... there's only

Language. Actually like last night I was watching movie "John Wick 2". Have you

guys seen that movie but there is... one of the bad characters is a Deaf woman

actually played by Ruby Rose. But she was signing and she acted as a Deaf

woman and it was really cool I just see more Deaf people a more Deaf culture and

sign language just becoming like more integrated and mainstream in media

It's really amazing to see I am very happy about that Ryan's... We love

watching movies that have sign language in it or at least like a small part and

you know John Wick is a like pretty big movie so that doesn't really happen

often. It was really cool but anyways I promised you guys I would teach you some

sign language today so... And if there are signs that you want

to know but I don't go over them today you can send us a snap chat and we'll

respond with the sign so if you're not following us get on that follow us on

snapchat because Ryan's very interactive on it I go on it too and we usually

respond pretty quickly so yeah let me teach you a few signs. How about first

sign just like simple plate plate plate is your middle finger like this

plate bowl bowl like you're making the shape

of the bowl so bowl bowl. Spoon with your two fingers like this in a 'U'. spoon

and fork is like a peace sign or two. fork fork. how about chopsticks you know your

girl is Japanese. Chopsticks chopsticks is like this chopsticks

you're taking your tray or your your whatever you're going to cook your stuff in

and you put it in the oven

Okay so since Ryan's not going to be in today's vlog we're just going to talk about things I

want to talk about and I just wanted to share this word that I learned today

sometimes when I'm just chilling I will go on my YouTube app and watch TED Talks

Mostly TED talks and there's this one TED talk.TED talk. This is the

sign for "speech" so TED talk. They described the word, "liminal" as meaning

person who's between different topics or subjects or just in between two

different ideas and I've always felt like I was a liminal where I wasn't

exactly one thing but I had parts of that and I wasn't exactly the other

thing either but I had parts of that too I never knew that there was actually a

word for it but this TED talk by Marianne

Cantwell called, " The Hidden Powers of Not Always Fitting In" so I thought it was a

really interesting talk and you guys should go check it out. I'll leave a link

in the description box if you have the time today I would watch it if that

sounds interesting to you especially a lot of younger people out there I know

there's a lot of younger high schoolers who watch our videos and sometimes I

definitely felt that way during high school so if you feel that way

definitely watch it watch it because it's pretty it's pretty cool

Another thing I want to talk today because Ryan never wants to talk about my stuff or like he gets

so bored of my like little hobbies I have, but I went to Target yesterday and

I actually vlogged it but for some reason my phone wasn't working whenever

I will hold the phone or he liked the selfie video and take a video it it

wouldn't get the sound so I think something's wrong with the software but

you know. it's whatever so I just didn't include that in yesterday's vlog

but I went to Target and I got a few notebooks and journals. Since it's

summer I wanted to learn about myself a little bit more so I bought

these and they're...so I bought actually...I went overboard with

it because I bought three of them three of these books and they are the

knock-knock journals and they have different things like this one is

"I gotta be I gotta be", the "I'm doing my best", and the "okay, fine, I'm grateful"

They just have different quotes inside you can see like.

All these different clothes in the section...so on the left hand side they have a

quote on the right hand side they have a place where you can journal and write

down things. A couple things

I'll leave a link in the description box below but since it's summer I mean you

guys. It's summer so take the time to just learn about yourself and maybe

write a few things everyday about yourself. That's my little haul I guess

I just went over but I think this is important. You know mental health has

always been something that's very important to me and sometimes it can get

really hard and if whatever helps you. Whether it's a book or meditate or

you know sports, exercise whatever it is take the time this summer to really you

know do that. Learn more about yourself take the time to really think about your

whatever issues you're having working them through I just I just

mental health is just something that touches dear to my heart and I really

really work hard to make sure that I am in the know about myself and I'm self

aware well actually even though Ryan wasn't here it's a really long vlog

IS WHAT GOD DOES IN US AND HOW HE CHANGES US

FROM WHAT WE WERE WHEN WE STARTED

TO WHAT HE WANTS US TO BE.

AND IT'S A PROCESS.

IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS ALL AT ONCE.

IT DOESN'T HAPPEN INSTANTANEOUSLY.

IT HAPPENS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.

AND IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY WITH GOD,

THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO BE PATIENT AND REALIZE THAT,

ALTHOUGH YOU'RE NOT YET WHERE YOU NEED TO BE,

THAT GOD'S NOT MAD AT YOU ABOUT THAT, THAT HE LOVES YOU

EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

NOT IN A SELFISH, SELF-CENTERED WAY,

BUT IN A BALANCED, HEALTHY WAY.

INSURMOUNTABLE WITH GOD'S HELP.

WHICH GOD BESTOWS AND RECEIVES.

The Truth About the Sun's 'Twin' and the Dinosaurs - Duration: 4:21.

It's been all over the internet lately:

Astronomers discover that the Sun has an evil twin!

And that's what killed the dinosaurs!

Which would be an incredible discovery... if it were true.

These articles are based on a paper that was published last month in the Monthly Notices

of the Royal Astronomical Society, where researchers predicted that every star could've started

with a partner, like in a binary star system,

and that most pairs just split up as time goes on.

Which means that our very own Sun might have a long-lost sibling

out there somewhere in the Milky Way.

But we haven't actually found that sibling.

And even if this other star is out there, it isn't what killed the dinosaurs.

This is just one of those cases where people

have gotten a little carried away with their headlines.

So, let's start with the facts.

A lot of stars are singletons like our Sun: They're on their own, with no nearby stellar

neighbors to keep them company.

But astronomical surveys have found that tons of stars are in multi-star systems,

which happens when two or more stars form from the same cloud of gas and dust

and keep orbiting together.

Until now, astronomers figured that most loner stars were always only children, while stars

in multi-star systems had always had siblings.

The paper's authors wanted to learn more about how multi-star systems evolve over time,

so they observed 24 young, multi-star systems in the Perseus molecular cloud, a stellar

nursery a few hundred light-years away that has lots of new stars.

Most of the systems were binaries, with two stars.

Astronomers have found that binary stars tend to be pretty far apart when they're young,

and get closer together as they age.

And that's exactly what the team saw in the Perseus star systems.

But they also found something interesting about the way that the binaries orbited

each other at different points in their lives.

Young binaries that were just a few hundred thousand years old,

which practically makes them newborns to astronomers,

tended to orbit in the same direction their parent clouds were spinning.

That's not too surprising: If they just formed, they should be moving the same way

as whatever they formed from.

But the fewer older binaries orbited in ways that were more random, and didn't really

have anything to do with the way their clouds spun.

So something had to have changed their orbits as they aged.

To figure out what might cause these trends, the team did what astronomers often do best:

They turned to computer simulations.

They simulated stars forming under lots of different conditions, but only two of the

models they tried actually fit the data.

In both models, all stars had to form with a distant sibling, instead of just some of

them, and the orbits would naturally shrink as the stars aged.

In the first model, about 60% of the time, something like another star

would get too close, and its gravity would fling the siblings apart.

In the second model, the gas clouds around them would sometimes

split into pieces and drag the stars apart.

Either way, these binaries would become single stars like our Sun.

So if either model is right, that would mean that every star started with a sibling, and

that loners like our Sun lost their neighbors as they grew up.

Still, the paper's based on pretty limited data, so we don't know for sure if every

star actually does start with a sibling.

We'll have to wait and see if future observations match up.

But in the meantime, all of this has dredged up an old hypothesis

about a brown dwarf star named Nemesis.

Some scientists over the last 50 years have claimed that astronomical events like the

asteroid that killed the dinosaurs happen too regularly to be by chance,

about once every 27 million years.

In the 1980s, that led astronomers to calculate that something like a brown dwarf, a small,

failed star that couldn't start a fusion reaction, could cause that pattern

if it orbited the Sun from about one and a half light-years away.

Its gravity could affect the orbits of things like asteroids and fling them toward Earth.

The researchers named this star Nemesis.

Because every good star needs an archenemy.

So some people have been saying that this new paper proves

that Nemesis has been out there, causing chaos in the inner solar system

since it formed four and a half billion years ago.

But that's not what it says.

Like, at all.

The models predict binaries either break up really early on

or that their orbits shrink as they get older.

So, yeah: the Sun might have once had a partner.

But if it did, they would've split billions of years ago,

and they wouldn't be anywhere near each other now.

The confusion probably comes from people calling the long-lost partner from this paper Nemesis.

But again: this star doesn't fit the theory that a star might have killed the dinosaurs.

Even if the Sun's sibling was still around, it should be hundreds of times closer than

the 1.5 light-years astronomers predicted back in the 80s.

Which means we almost definitely would've seen it by now.

But astronomers have searched incredibly carefully for Nemesis,

and they've come up with a whole lot of nothing.

We just haven't found anything that big anywhere near us.

So it's no surprise that this new paper never mentions Nemesis.

Because even though it makes for a great headline, it's just not relevant.

In a nutshell, a law enacted in the 1950s made it easier for children born to unwed

mothers to achieve citizenship, then it did children with a single father.

In the majority decision, Justice Ruth Ginsburg wrote, '"The gender line, Congress drew

is incompatible with the requirement that the government accord to all persons, the

equal protection of the laws."

Effectively saying this law is unconstitutional for, more on this.

I'm joined now by Mollye Barrows, legal journalist with the Trial Lawyer Magazine.

Mollye, first of all, what was the law that created this gender disparity to begin with?

Where did this all start?

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, so going back several decades, there was this

notion that children born to parents out of wedlock whereas the dad may have been a citizen

or the mom is citizen, they had unequal requirements for how the child born in that union, how

the child could become a citizen.

For example, unwed fathers had to spend at least, that were US citizens, unwed US citizen

fathers had to spend at least five years in the United States in order for the child to

become a citizen, whereas the requirement was only one year for the mothers and basically

the reason for that is that the Supreme Court back in the day thought that unwed fathers

were less likely to care for their children than the mothers.

Yup, well, what were the circumstances?

I mean that's part of the circumstances.

Yes, yes.

Obviously, this lack of being able to evolve, but what were the circumstances that caused

the Supreme Court to eventually look at this and finally take action to strike it out?

Yes, so finally this, a recent case at immigration where the United States was trying to deport

a repeated felon, a repeated convicted felon, and his name is Luis Ramon Morales-Santana,

so he's from the Dominican Republic.

His mother was a Dominican Republic citizen.

His father a US citizen, but he didn't automatically meet the requirements to become a US citizen

because his dad just missed the window of years that he was supposed to have spent in

the United States in order for this child to become a citizen.

Well, the parents later married.

They moved to the United States.

Luis gets arrested for a number of things, convicted felon and the United States government

wants to deport him back to the Dominican Republic and he says, 'But wait, I am a

citizen.

I want to become a citizen.

It's this law that's unfairly kept me from becoming a citizen based on sexual discrimination.'

So that's the case that went to the Supreme Court.

That's what they heard and they basically decided that we agree with you.

This is sexual discrimination.

You're not getting equal protection under the law, but it didn't really work out in

his favor as far as, while they may have agreed with him that it was sexual discrimination

as we'll explain in a second, it really didn't work out as far as his bid for citizenship.

In other words, partially good news, partially bad news.

Yes.

Did this really, what does this mean for people like Morales and other people in similar situations?

Well, I think ultimately, he was certainly hoping that they would come back and say,

'Yeah, you're right.

Not only was it sexual discrimination, you're not getting legal protection under the law,

but we're going to go ahead and let you become a citizen.

We're going to take a whole new look at this.'

But that's not what happened.

They pitched it back in the Congress' lap and said, 'Congress, you need to come up

with a rule that's equitable.

That applies to all people in these situations, but in the meantime, we're going to make it

fair and that now, children born to unwed mothers have to meet the same requirements

as those born to unwed fathers.'

So he's not going to be a citizen.

Yeah, people watching this have to conclude the same thing that you and I.

Yes.

These aren't great years for people like Morales because of the Trump years to begin with so.

Yes.

This is an important ruling for certainly from an equal protection standpoint.

I don't know that it really is a step forward for huge, swaths of immigrants that want to

come to the United States and still have equal protection under the law, but it's a start.

🍀Green Direct SPRAY MOP 👀 HARDWOOD FLOORS Stick Mop Product Review 👈 - Duration: 6:40.

Hi I have a new mop to review It's the Green Direct Spray Mop

Now I have already reviewed the Green Direct Spin Mop

and I use that a lot on the main level of the house

but I'm upstairs now and the floors here don't get as dirty as the floors do on the main

level of the house but they do get a lot of dust and pet hair and rather than carrying

a mop up and down the stairs I have been using uh a I guess you call it a wet jet uh wet

dry mop portable mop and I got this and I've used it a few times and it's a big improvement

Here's the box that it came in So I'm going to use this on hardwood and some

vinyl it can also be used on laminate really any hard surface even concrete

It has a comfortable feel the handle is nice and long don't have to bend over

Here's the microfiber pad and it goes right on and off and it is machine washable

not heavy enough to do any good as a weight it comes with a refillable bottle so you can

add water or any type of cleaning fluid right now I've got some premixed hardwood

floor cleaner but it just pops in and out very easy to take

in and out and refill and just spray it very very easy

I wanted to tell you something else..

I mentioned that I've been using a Swiffer wet jet and let me get that so I can show

you the difference between that mop and this Ok so this is what I have been using here

on the level and they come with um they come with a proprietary cleaning fluid that you

can't open the bottle it's not refillable ok so compare the swiffe wetjet to the green

direct spray mop - now you can see right away the handle is longer and more substantial

on the Green Direct so look at the size difference between the mop head on the Green Direct and

Swiffer on the Green Direct it is much larger and

that makes clean-up quicker it's 16 inches wide - yeah 16 inches wide

by 5 inches and I'm not sure of the width of this but hmm what about a foot

um so I will just say this is a much better mop and I'm going to get this one out of the

way so easy to push there is no resistance and

it has a nice flat surface obviously I am doing wet mopping right now but it is also

just great for dry mopping dust mopping There are - you probably hear it back there

- there is a pug and there is also a cat that comes up here so there's lots of hair but

this seems to take care of it very very easy let me give you a little better look at the

refillable bottle see there it is the top just screws off

and then it just slides right back in can't get any easier than that

so you can use as little or as much cleaning fluid or water as you want I get carried away

sometimes It just glides over the floor

and I really like taking good care of these floors because originally there was carpet

here so we had the carpet taken out and acacia hardwood put down so I really want to take

good care of it - I don't use any harsh products on it and this is the perfect mop.

Oh it looks like you've been doing a good job on the floor

Yeah, I really like this mop So I'm really impressed with this mop

It has a very good design for a duster/spray mop

uh easy refillable bottle lightweight comfortable to use and a nice big mop head

So I'd say this is a keeper Thanks for watching
