What's up, guys. Are you okay? I'm Felipe Andreoli.
Today, I'm here to show you my top 10 favorite songs ever.
It was really hard to do this list because as everybody I like many things.
There are many songs that are touching, many songs from different styles.
Some songs that represent moments of my life and bring those memories back.
But, this is the challenge, that's the game. 10 songs to sum up all my life listening to music,
almost everyday, actually, everyday. Almost all day long.
Right? There's no order of preference, but the first one there's a sense on it
because it's one of the bands that made me being a musician.
My first band I used to play cover of this one I'll mention.
I'm talking about Metallica.
The song I've chosen is "The Thing That Should Not Be".
It's a track from Master Of Puppets album.
The album is from 1986 and Cliff Burton was on bass, yet.
It's hard to choose only one song, but I took this one because it's a heavy song,
maybe the heavier on this album, not the fastest, but the heavier.
The key is down, it's very mysterious, a differente song that I like a lot.
And, Master Of Puppets, as other Metallica albums and other bands,
made part of my musical backgrounds. I think there's a lot of Metallica in my DNA.
So, it must have a Metallica song in my Top 10.
And, this is the song from Master Of Puppets, "The Thing That Should Not Be".
The next band... I thought more about bands than songs.
I thought firstly about the bands and after the songs from these bands that could be
well represented here on Top 10.
The next band that was very important in my music formation was Dream Theater.
It's a band that I started to listen in 94, right when this album was released
that is called Awake. The track I've chosen to represent this album was "Voices".
It's a song that there's a little of each element from the album.
The thing about the vibes, the heaviness, the melodies are wonderful, a very good song.
The bass intro is very cool. And Dream Theater was a great school to me
because I was never that guy who enjoyed studies... I never had rules to study
exercices and measures and etc.
My studies were more based on the songs I'd like to play or songs that I needed to play
that I had to play on a concert. Covers from a determined band, but also for fun.
Especially from the begining. I remember when this album was lauched I got crazy,
then I started to listen to other things. That time there were only 3 album from DT,
Images And Words and the first one.
I kinda ate all those albums and learnt how to play almost all the songs on them.
Of course I had much time. And I played by ear. It was very important to my
development. Play some difficult songs full of notes and parts.
Play all of this by ear.
And, as I grown up in a background of progressive music, and also listened to Metal,
Dream Theater was the band that joined these two worlds that were part of my universe.
And... Well, it was a great school to me and this song represents what DT is for me.
Next artist I've chosen is a Pop one. It's Seal
Seal is one of my favorite singers ever, but also his compositions, with his partners too,
are very moving, I think that they are one of the most wonderful and deep songs
that I've ever listened are from Seal.
I have all the albums of him. It's rare not to like something he does.
He has... He is a pop artist, but he's not that dancing pop singer all the time.
He has an introspective side very strong. And this side touches me more than
the happier side of his job.
The song I've chosen it's a song called "Dreaming In Metaphors".
From his second album, Seal No. 2. He doesn't have name for the albums,
till the fifth album. So, it's Seal No. 2.
This songs is very beautiful, very well done, its instrumental is very sofisticated,
very well played, everything good... Very well produced, his voice is amazing.
If you don't know his job... Well, if you are an Angra fan, maybe you don't know.
Not to mention the obvious ones that everybody knows a song of him.
It really worths to listen to Seal because there are many good things.
The first three albums you can listen relaxing, with closed eyes that you'll enjoy. For sure.
Back to roots, talking about heavy songs.
I've chosen a song from Pantera, "Five Minutes Alone".
It's also difficult to choose a song from Pantera because I like many things.
All their career. Excepting the first albums that they were more Glam, and I don't know a lot.
But Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven,
that has this song "Five Minutes Alone" and all of the others.
The Great Southern Trendkill till the last Reinventing the Steel.
They are all excellent albums and Pantera has changed the heavy songs.
There is the heavy songs before and after Pantera.
And it's a band that makes part... Like today when I write a riff I remember their riffs
and many things are done like theirs. It's also in my musical DNA.
I chose "Five Minutes Alone" because is one of the good songs from this album.
This album doesn't call my attention only because of the composition, but also
because of the production. I love the sound of this album. It's remarkable.
The sound of the guitars, drums, bass... everything.
So, because of it, it's my choice.
Next, there's another band that I listen since when I was a child.
My mother listened as well. I had the album at home and I listened together
and I fell in love with the band. That's Tears For Fears.
That's a band that for many years, when I said I liked it,
there was bullying with me.
because it was a pop band, a girl's band, this song is for faggots and so on...
It's funny that the same people who said that, today they are older and
they learned to listen and today they think it's very cool, Tears For Fears.
And this is one more band that I like everything that they've done.
With like... few exceptions. They have fantastic albums, from different phases.
They got that eletronic music from the 80s, more Rock N' Roll with Raoul and the Kings of Spain,
and the song I've chosen is a song that is the title song of the album Elemental.
It's the song "Elemental". It's also hard to choose only one song of them.
But I think it's a song that represents well. I love the voice of Roland Orzabal.
The singer of Tears For Fears.
He is a producer, a song writer first-class. He got talent.
I had the opportunity of seeing him alive. And I am suspect to talk about the band.
I like Tears For Fears a lot. And it's one of these bands that if you listen
if you really listen, you understand the quality. It's good, it's well done.
Not the obvious that is also... The obvious, the pop of Tears For Fears
like 'Woman In Chains', Shout... these more known songs are also very good.
So, it worths if you listen. I'm sure you won't regret.
And also, from the same period of my discovering with Tears For Fears,
there are the progressive bands. Many bands of this style
that I'd like to mention here. Like, Genesis, Emerson Linkin Palmer,
Yes... There are infinity bands, but I chose Rush.
There's also Supertramp. I've chose Rush for the simple reason that Geddy Lee
is, probably, my favorite musician of all times. Not only as bass player.
By what he represents as a bass player, as a singer, as a composer, by the image of the band.
If you watched the documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage by Rush,
it's funny how they talk about the difficulties they had to be like a band
in a time that the visual was very appraised. They were nerds,
nobody was handsome, nobody was charming.
And the music was beyond and it was the main point to make Rush be this band
mega giagantic that it is nowadays. And Geddy Lee, especially,
the sound of bass, the lines, the way he writes, tones... everything.
He is fantastic. I'm huge fan. I think he's one of the few guys when I meet
that will be difficult to hold the emotion.
I'm fan of Rush. And the sing I've chosen is the song "Limelight".
Once more, with no special reason. This is one of the songs I adore and
if you don't know Rush, my friend. It's time!
In my musical development there was the phase to listen what my parents listned
after I listened things I searched, knew with friends etc...
Then, this vibe with Metal started and etc. I listened to Metallica, Malmsteen,
after Dream Theater. Then, there was a phase when I listened Fusion.
Tribal Tech, Chick Corea... And this band that is Weather Report.
Like the job of Jaco Pastorius. One of the bass players of the band.
I've chosen a song called "Havona" from the album Heavy Weather.
This song has one of the most wonderful bass solos in history.
Jaco Pastorius is, for sure, an icon for any bass player that understand the instrument.
He was a great revolucionist of any instrument from the XX century.
And he passed away when he was 37. He has a crazy history, if you had the chance
watch the documentary called Jaco. It was produced by Robert Trujillo from Metallica.
Watch it. It's an amazing history, at the same time it's sad and fascinating.
And, Weather Report was not only Jaco, but also Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul.
And many other musicians that I am very fan as a band or solo career.
And, Weather Report was one of the bands that created Fusion.
They ruled the way that all Fusion bands walked through.
Even at their period, but also those that came after.
And also nowadays the band is a reference to many Fusion bands.
So, Havona is a very good song that should listen.
The next one, I've chosen a song from a guitar player...
To me is very important to be open minded to all the instruments.
I'm a bass player, but before it all I am a musician. I started playing acoustic guitar,
I like drums a lot, I love piano, I like so many musical instruments...
And I am influenced by musicians that play other instruments,
Like Simon Phillips on drums, he's a great example. Steve Vai on guitars,
is another great example.
Then, I chose a Steve Vai song that is not even the best of him.
It's a Side B song. It's a song called "All About Eve".
He sings on this song, too. It's a song from the album Fire Garden.
The second half of this album, he sings almost all the songs.
It's an amazing composition of him, actually, the opposite is difficult to say
concerning Steve Vai's compositions. They are all fantastic. It's a very beautiful song,
it's more introspective. And it's difficult to choose something of him inside his vast
collection of excellent songs he has through the past years.
But this one moves me a lot. Maybe it's not the most representative of his jobs.
And also because the most part of his songs are instrumental, except this album.
And some other moments like the album Sex And Religion, from Vai band.
It's a band he had. I had the chance to know better Steve Vai 'cos he was in Brazil
last year to do some clinics. And I had the opportunity to eat a pizza with him.
You see what a honor?
He's a fantastic man. What he says is almost as beautiful as what he plays.
The vision he has about music, philosophically speaking. And about life in general.
Listen to him is something amazing. It's lesson after lesson.
And his music reflects the fantastic human being that he is, for sure.
So, listen to "All About Eve".
Now, there is a bass player. And this guy was a great influence to me,
I met him when I played for a short time. I met him a disco store here in São Paulo,
from my friend Sérgio Takara. And in this store he used to sell instruments and CDs, too.
And he used to sell common CDs, but he had many instrumental stuff.
Many fusion stuff, jazz, many styles... Guitar players. Those schecters from the 80s and 90s.
He had everything. It was almost the only place you could find those imported CDs.
And very expensive ones. I remember I was enjoying the instruments even more,
and I lived close to Teodoro St. So, I was always there to see the news and talk.
Who works there nowadays remember me from that time 'cos I pissed everyone off.
Trying some instruments, asking for price. But I didn't buy anything. I had no money.
But, I was always there. And then, Sérgio Takara talked about Micahel Manring.
And I bought it by chance. I've never listened to it. I didn't know anything about him.
I bought a CD called Unsual Weather, his first solo album.
It's funny because this album it's not even fusion. It's a New Age album.
It's something different. And I liked New Age. I always liked Vangelis.
The composer of... his most famous song is maybe Blade Runner soundtrack.
So, I liked New Age and I got crazy with this album because it was not only
the virtuosity. In fact, there's virtuosity on this album.
But the melodies, the compositions are wonderful, fantastic.
And this was my door to Michael Manring world and after I bought all his albums.
I have them all. I had the chance to wacth his workshop in 97.
There's a nice point, he has a song he plays with three basses at once.
He gets three basses hung, and a third he asks someone to hold.
I already knew that, so before he asked someone to hold the bass,
I was with my hands in the air then I hold the third bass.
He played a song called "My Three Moons" and I hold his bass.
And after I had the chance to know him better, he was in Brazil some years ago
in a bass festival in São Luiz. And there we had the chance to know each other better
and talk. Sometimes, you can check, he comments my posts.
He is a very nice man. One of the best I've already met.
And he is incredible. The song I've chosen to show you is "Selene".
It's a solo bass song. And it's fantastic because he uses a lot of different keys.
He has a bass called Hyper Bass, that was developed for him only
by a company called Zon. On this bass each screw has a lever called Extender
and he can change the key notes of each string individually.
On the brigde he has three options of tunning. The keys can go below or
only the two sharp ones or the low ones.
This bass has three eighth. It's fretless. He uses different strings, slim strings...
It's something unique, but with this virtuosity and technological,
what call attention the most are the compositions, melodies, construction,
the expression... he's a great guy. Who knows him, loves his jobs. And I recomemend for you
all Michael Manring albums, especially this song that is on the album called Soliloquy.
That is called "Selene".
Last but no least. I had to put a Brazilian on the list.
I am not the one about Brazilian music. But I like many things.
I don't know Brazilian music so deep. I don't know each composer from MPB or Bossa Nova.
Or etc and etc. But, I like it a lot. And my favorite Brazlian musician is
Ivan Lins. I think he is one of the best composers on earth.
It's so true that his songs are famous in Brazil and other contries.
Especially out of Brazil. On Burklee, students study his harmonies.
Because they are so complicated. Also, he joins the melodies that seems to be simple.
He is a genius. He colaborate with great artists from fusion, jazz...
He is respected. He plays on big festivals. In Brazil he known as the guy that composes
soap operas soundtracks. That is something he does very well, too.
Maybe this is his bread and butter. What gives him conditions to
continue with music of this quality. Maybe a pop song that puts him
more accessible to people.
He has rich songs. He is an amazing song writer. I chose a song
called "Começar De Novo". Because it's a beautiful song that seems simple
but when you study it the harmony it's very complex.
The harmonies are very complex, but at the same time it sounds simple, natural.
This song is from his album called À Noite. But he has during his life
excellent jobs. It's difficult to mention one. But this is my favorite.
This is it, guys. I hope you enjoyed. I hope it inspires you, so you can
search different artists that you didn't know. It's very good.
If you are a musician or not. But especially if you are.
It's important to open your ears to new things.
Hope it inspires you.
