Waching daily Jun 8 2017

Hello everyone.

Movie Star just posted another interview video where we get a glimpse of some behind the

scene clips of season 7.

The interviews are in Spanish, but we can still discuss the season 7 clips here.

If you have watched my set photo videos, you probably already saw of the new locations.

This video doesn't reveal as much as the last video did, but it does confirm some things.

So, let's take a look at them.

In the official trailer, we saw Dany touching the ground after arriving at the beach.

In this clip we see her rising after that, and then walking toward those gates.

We also see Grey Worm, at the beach.

They were probably filming the scene of their arrival.

And we see another angle of Dany, Missendei and Grey Worm walking up the steps of Dragonstone.

We also see the filming of the scene from the trailer where Tyrion is looking at the

dragons flying or maybe it's a scene from the battle because the background looks different.

And do you remember the scene from the trailer where we see a Dothraki Horde with Drogon

flying over them?

We already knew that Dany will be fighting the Lannisters.

One thing that is confirmed by this video is that Bronn and Jamie will be there in this

battle, AND it's possible that Jon will be there too.

Look at the background when Bronn and Jaime are speaking.

You can see a lake behind him.

In another clip, we can see Emilia talking to someone.

You can see same lake in the brackground.

And in one of Tyrion's interviews, I think I saw something like a lake and a boulder

behind him, which means Tyrion will also go to the battle with them.

We also see Jaime mounting a horse.

I can't wait to see this battle.

It's going to be awesome.

Most of Kit's interview is in a frozen place, so they must be filming in the north.

In the trailer, we saw Jon and Tormund running from someone, or rather something.

From the background of Tormund's interview, it's confirmed that they are north of the

wall.

We see some more glimpses of the locations of north of the wall and Casterly Rock.

BTW, if you'll zoom in on the Clapperboard in the North of the wall scene, you can see

Game of Thrones written on it.

I don't know what the numbers 706, 9A or 2 A means, but I did notice the three headed

dragon of House Targaryen on it.

Do you think it means anything, like Daenerys will go to the North of the wall? or am I

thinking too much on it?

What do you think?

One thing looked weird to me.

In one of Kit's interviews, the background is green.

There is no sign of snow anywhere, but we can see something white in his hair.

One possibility is that there were filming a scene with fake snow in it, OR, may be this

white stuff is supposed to be ashes?

Is it possible that Jon is present at the Battle mentioned above?

What do you think?

Anyways, it's time for the comment shoutout now.

Today's comment shoutout goes to Dnisse, who said, "As much as they insist on showing

Daenerys as Queen, she will not sit on the Iron Throne."

I completely agree with you Dnisse.

I don't think Dany will end up on the Iron Throne.

So, what do you think of these theories, don't forget to tell us in the comments.

Things Die-Hard Fans Don't Even Know About The Walking Dead - Duration: 8:04.

AMC's The Walking Dead has become a staple of Sunday television, endlessly shocking and

delighting fans with its gory action and non-stop drama.

The grim apocalyptic series has gotten increasingly violent over the years, to the point that

some fans have even called it quits because of the alarming brutality, while others have

become irked by some key changes from the original comic's scenes.

But even those who've stuck around from the start still might be surprised to find out

these facts about the series.

From on-set hijinks to spoiler maintenance problems, here's what you may not know about

The Walking Dead...

Taking the lead

In a major case of Hollywood sliding doors, Andrew Lincoln almost wasn't cast as Sheriff

Rick Grimes because he'd accepted a role in another film at the time.

But life got in the way: his second child was born shortly before the film was expected

to commence production, so Lincoln decided against shooting it after all.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, "I got a friend to replace me in this movie and the next day,

this script came through from AMC.

I must have been on their radar with Frank [Darabont], and he wanted me to test.

It was incredible."

What got him to agree to take the audition to begin with, he later revealed, was the

fact that executive producer and show co-creator Frank Darabont was involved.

He believed that meant the show could have a real future that made moving his growing

family worth it.

As he told Rolling Stone, "Frank talked us into getting on that plane."

SWAT team swarm

During production on the second episode of the inaugural season, The Walking Dead's cast

and crew got an unexpected set of visitors: a SWAT team.

Mearle actor Michael Rooker was on a rooftop shooting his rifle to simulate a zombie sniper

session, but onlookers mistook his behavior for the real deal — and called in the cops.

"I saw people jump and run.

They had already dispatched the SWAT team.

The officer said, 'Please, stand down.'"

It wasn't the last time a false alarm would ring regarding the show.

In 2016, a Great Falls, Montana, family found themselves swarmed by police after neighbors

called in a possible domestic violence incident involving guns inside their home … because

they were watching the show loud enough for neighbors to think a big shootout was going

down.

Pulling pranks

For a show with such grisly material as The Walking Dead, its stars sure know how to have

fun when the cameras aren't rolling.

Actor Norman Reedus in particular has a long-running history of pranking Andrew Lincoln and others

during production.

Some of his greatest hits from the thick history book of their prank wars include Reedus filling

Lincoln's car vents with glitter so that it exploded all over him as soon as he cranked

the A/C. Then there was the time he taught Lincoln to greet Japanese fans with the phrase

"where's the toilet" when he wanted to say "thank you for allowing me to be here."

Lincoln's been known to get him back on occasion, too, like when he put Reedus' treasured motorcycle

on a boat with a sex doll and sent it sailing to the middle of a lake.

But the best is when he gets more precise forms of payback.

"Believe me, this is the end."

AMC Easter eggs

The Walking Dead is an Easter egg lover's dream, because the show is filled with hidden

tributes to the original comics, other zombie epics, and plenty more.

AMC's sister hit Breaking Bad received some of the most clever winks and references.

For instance, there was the Heisenberg-blue meth that appeared in a bag of drugs shown

in the second season.

And let's not forget when Daryl Dixon basically described his brother's dealer — and Jesse

Pinkman fit the description to a tee.

"Merle had this dealer.

This janky little white guy.

He says 'I'm gonna kill you bitch.'"

The connections have been significant enough to even inspire some theorists to connect

the timelines of the two shows and posit a cause-and-effect relationship between Walter

White's chemical concoction and the onset of the zombie plague.

"Yeah Mr. White.

Yeah science!"

Hey, anything's possible!

The Walking Dead has still yet to explain where and why the walker infection happened.

Irking the neighbors

You might think living in a small town where one of TV's biggest hits is made would be

a treat.

But for some residents of Senoia, Georgia, the experience of becoming a mini-Hollywood

has been unpleasant at times.

As reported by ABC News, some of Senoia's natives have been annoyed by being asked to

change their activities in their hometown as a result of its proximity to the set — from

taking pictures to trimming trees, show officials have stepped in to moderate what would otherwise

be considered pretty ordinary behaviors.

"And they come out of there sayin' I need to stop, they're filming.

Uh, I said 'Well no, you just carry your happy butt right behind the wall.'"

Set attention has also spawned an army of "Walker Stalkers" — that is, fans who case

the town in hopes of catching a glimpse — which is both a business boon and a headache for

locals, especially when explosive scenes are being shot nearby one of the neighborhoods.

To compensate for the troubles, though, some families are paid a monthly stipend of $400,

and others have received in-person thanks from some of the cast.

Earning outrage

While plenty of devastating character deaths have happened on The Walking Dead over the

years, one killing in particular had commentators in a tizzy.

In the sixth season, Merritt Wever's Dr. Denise Cloyd was killed off.

And it wasn't just the fact that she died in a way that, in the comics, happened to

Abraham.

Instead, it was the fact that her death added to a growing trend of that season in which

lesbian characters were routinely and unceremoniously executed on various shows.

The show was immediately panned after the episode aired for playing into the "bury your

gays" trope that seemed to be so common in mainstream television in 2016.

Of the controversy, Wever herself told The Daily Beast, "I hadn't thought about it that

way.

… I'm not sure that that's what was going on here but I understand the sentiment very

well."

Avoiding the amputation

One of the most glaring omissions from The Walking Dead's transformation from book to

screen has been the fact that Rick's still got both of his hands.

In the comics, The Governor cuts off Rick's right hand — his shooter side, no less.

So when the Governor arrived on-screen in the third season, many readers were braced

for the inevitable.

But it never happened.

There have been a couple minor winks to the event, like Merle — a character unique to

the show — having to cut off his own hand to escape being handcuffed to a rooftop.

And then there was the time the villainous Negan threatened to cut off Carl's hand in

the seventh season.

But Rick's still working with two fully functional fists.

So what gives?

In his Reddit AMA series, the comic book's co-creator Robert Kirkman explained the decision

as a matter of practicality, and the simple of filming a TV show: saying:

"To clarify, I think cutting Rick's hand [off] when we did was GREAT for the comic.

It's just that in another medium it would be harder to pull off, we cheat in the comic

because things aren't moving.

You can't do that on the show.

You'd see Rick not being able to reload his gun, and things like that.

The CGI of cutting off Rick's hand would be expensive, but we did it with Hershel's leg

so if we felt strongly about Rick losing a hand, we'd do it."

Optimistic end game

The show may have diverged from writer Robert Kirkman's ongoing comic series in some significant

ways, but he still has a lot of creative influence on The Walking Dead production.

According to him, fans can expect the ending to both versions to be hopeful.

He said, "It's a very popular show, and [the executives at AMC] seem to want it to go for

50 seasons.

And it may go for 50 seasons, but there is definitely an end point at some point…

I see the story from beginning to end, over many, many years, so I think it's a very hopeful

story about humanity overcoming this insurmountable, apocalyptic situation.

… It's just gonna take them a long time to do it."

But until then,we'll all just enjoy the grim ride.

The Paw Patrol GETS SLIMED by Evil Boss Baby Poison - Paw Patrol Episode, Chupa Chups Candy Fun - Duration: 10:51.

Hi Everyone today, we're here with Skye from Paw Patrol in her kitchen.

Skye loves to do super nice things for all of her Paw Patrol friends and Today, she's

going to make a yummy colorful salad!

She has to combine all the ingredients for the salad into the orange bowl.

This salad is her super special secret recipe that she makes only for her friends.

She's going to put everything in her favorite bright orange bowl.

First up is this green crispy lettuce.

Lettuce is the most important part of this salad.

It goes in first and all the other fresh ingredients go on top of it.

. The next food that goes in the salad is onions.

These onions are so crispy.

Now we have to add these juicy, red tomatoes to our salad.

They are really tasty and make the salad so colorful.

Next, let's add these crunchy green cucumbers.

Cucumbers are so crispy and juicy.

We also get two different colors of peppers!

Don't worry.

These peppers are not spicy, but they are colorful with yellow and red colors.

They add a bright yellow to the fresh salad.

This last vegetable is orange.

It's orange carrots!

Do you know the name of the Paw Patrol pup that wears orange?

Give me a big thumbs up if you know!

The salad is almost is all ready , but to make it all come together, we have to finish

it off with salad dressing Yum!

This will add some oil that will not make the salad too dry.

Good idea, Skye.

Last, but not least, Let's add some Pepper to the salad...Shake Shake Shake!

All done!

Perfect salad, Skye!

Skye: Oops!

Actually, I forgot just one thing.

I'll be right back, don't go anywhere.

Okay, Skye, we'll watch the salad for you.

Hey wait It's Boss Baby.

What is he doing here?

Boss Baby: Ha.

I don't like puppies, they think they are so cute!

Well, they're not cuter than me!

I have my own secret ingredient to add to their salad….

My special Boss Baby slime.

When they eat this slime, it will shrink the pups into mini-pups.

This is my meanest plan ever!

Muhahahah!

Skye is back with her special secret ingredient.

This is the very last part of the salad.

It will make the salad so so tasty!

Perfect!

Now the salad is all done and ready to share with friends.

That's great!

But there's one more thing we have to do before we let everyone try it.

We have to mix it all together now so everyone gets some of everything.

Everyone will really love this special salad that Skye made for them.

It looks extra yummy!

Awesome!

Skye divided all the salad up on everyone's plates.

Chase is the first one here.

I think he wants to eat on the orange plate because it reminds him of his friend Zuma.

There's Marshall too!

He's going to use the red plate...just like his fire truck.

Now everyone is here so they can eat.

Marshall must be really hungry, he's already eating!

He's eating all of his salad, I think he likes Skye's cooking.

Good job, Marshall.

You ate all of your super healthy, super tasty salad.

I'm so proud of you.

Now Chase is eating too.

He thinks the salad is so fresh and crispy and yummy.

He really loves the lettuce and tomatoes too.

He thinks it's the best salad he ever had.

He cleaned his plate.

Good job, Chase.

Everyone likes your salad, Skye.

Do you like it too?

You're eating it pretty fast.

Yeah!

You ate all of yours too.

Awesome.

Good job, Skye.

But wait!

Look!

Marshall shrunk into tiny Marshall.

And Chase got really small too.

Even Skye got shrunk too!

This must be the slime that Boss Baby put into the salad and they all ate it!

Boss Baby: Hehe...it worked!

It worked!

Just like I knew it would.

I made all these puppies small.

Now they'll never stop me.

I made a tiny little Skye, a mini Chase, and a super small Marshall that can't put out

any fires now.

This is my best plan yet...i told you I'd stop you puppies!

Oh no, that's not good.

Not the Paw Patrol pups are too small to stop Boss Baby.

He's stealing their special toys.

Boss Baby, you are so naughty.

Put them back.

If only someone were here to save them.

Rubble: Rubble on the double!

Awesome!

Rubble is here to save his friends!

He's going to stop Boss Baby.

He's trying to push Boss Baby away with his construction truck!

Yay!

It's working.

He did it!

Good job, Rubble.

But what is he going to do about the Paw Patrol pups.

They're still all tiny.

I hope he has a plan.

Yes!

What's that?

He has gumballs in his construction truck.

A red one...a blue one...and a pink one.

The red one is for Marshall.

The pink one is for Skye.

And the blue one is for Chase.

Now they have to eat them.

Nice!

Thanks for all your help, Rubble.

See you later!

Let's see if the medicine works.

You first, Marshall.

Eat it...good job.

Now, did it work?

Yes!

He's back to normal!

Rubble is so awesome.

Now it's Skye's turn.

Eat the pink gumball, Skye.

Did it work for you too?

I'm so nervous.

Awesome, it did!

Now you are regular Skye again, ready to do your job.

Chase still has to eat his gumball.

Here you go, Chase, go back with your friends.

Nice!

Now everyone is back to normal.

That was a close one.

But I'm happy everyone is back again.

Now we get to open our surprise toys!

The first toy is a Marshall Pop Ups Lollipop.

It has three lollipops to choose from.

Let's open it for a closer look.

We got three different flavors of lollipops.

Let's take a look at each flavor and see which one we want to eat first.

The first one is cherry...yum.

Then we have this green one, it's watermelon.

The last one is strawberry.

It's so red!

I can't wait to taste them all!

With the Paw Patrol Lollipop dispenser!

It's just like Marshall the red firepup from Paw Patrol who's always ready to help

his friends.

He has a bright red Marshall hat with a flashlight on it.

I love how it pops up and down and up and down!

It's so cool!

Let's see how a lollipop looks inside it.

Let's use the cherry lollipop.

Marshall's ready to try it out.

We have to open up the Pop Ups and put the lollipop in.

Then, Marshall keeps it fresh.

This way, it's really fun to eat and won't get anything sticky!

That's so amazing!

I can't wait to play with it more.

Let's open our next surprise toy.

It's a Despicable Me Pint Size Hero blind bag!

There could be any cool character from the movie in it.

They're all so cool!

But who did we get?

We got...Edith!

Awesome!

Edith is the middle daughter on Despicable Me.

She wears a cool pink hat and has blonde hair.

She's very funny and likes to play with Gru's weapons in his lab.

But she really loves to play with her sisters and do ballet.

She loves her family, even Gru, her new daddy.

He is a really good dad.

I think she would be good friends with Marshall.

Maybe she wants to try out the new Marshall Pop Ups lollipop dispenser.

Today was so fun!

Boss Baby almost stole the Paw Patrol pups toys, but Rubble saved them!

The Paw Patrol pups win again!

If you had fun, give me a big thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for more fun paw patrol

videos!

FOR NEW GRADS: FINDING A JOB WITH NO EXPERIENCE - Duration: 6:10.

Location [hand clap]!

Location [hand clap]!

Location [hand clap]!

You as a new graduate you're competing with those graduates that graduated a year or two

years before you who are still trying to find the perfect job.

(MUSIC)

Hi everyone!

My name is Kim, I am a Registered Dietitian.Welcome back to my channel.

For those of you that are new, there's some videos below that I do want you to see, so

don't be shy go ahed and look around in my channel and see if there's anything that you

look and subscribe.

So today we're going to be talking about how to score a job right after your internship,

right after you take the RD exam.

I'm finding that a lot of people are having a hard time with this.

To be honest with you this is something that I did not have a hard time with, because I

knew a few truths; so there are a few things that I knew in order to score a job right

after my internship, right after I passed my RD exam and these are things that I do

want to share with you today.

So the first thing is: Location [hand clap]!

Location [hand clap]!

Location [hand clap]!

Location is the very important.

Of course you know I live in Florida, but I do not live in Miami and I do not live in

Orlando.

Those are every concentrated areas.

Those are the areas which a lot of dietitians live, I mean Miami perfect vacation spot;

Orlando, everybody knows Orlando, but definitely rural communities have a little less competition

that those big cities that may have dietitians that have more experience than you.

Sorry if you guys hear the lawn mower in the back [ground] it seems like everytime I try

to do a video someone wants to mow their lawn, but anyway I'm not going to get distracted.

The 2nd thing you want to do is do not be afford of taking up a PRN position, a part

time position, or even a locum position.

Because let's be honest, the majority of individuals in the field of nutrition and dietetics are

female and some of these females are in child bearing age.

They may need some time off to have their children.

Someone that I did my internship with her 1st job was actually a locum position, if

you do not know what a locum is it's just like a temporary position.

She was filling in because the dietitian at a renal facility had her baby and they needed

someone to fill in while she was on FMLA.

So my friend filled in and when that dietitian came back off of FMLA guess what?

No, she did't lose the job, they actually created a job for her.

So do not be afraid of fulfilling locum positions which may give you 8-16 hours a week.

These are positions which are going to open up opportunities and open up windows for you.

Piggy backing off the PRN, the locum , the part time positions do not be afraid to travel.

There was one dietitian I knew that used to travel 2 hours just to come work in the area

where I am working because she could not get a job in one of the big cities so don't be

afraid to travel.

The next important thing is networking.

NET-WORK!

You know FNCE's 100 year anniversary is coming up that is good time for those of you that

are in a dietetic internship or those of you who have just finished taking your RD exam

to go and put yourself out there.

Make sure that your resume and that your CV and that your business cards are available.

I've made videos about this before.

I mean these are areas that you may have an interview and if you want to learn how to

slay that interview there's a video popping up right now.

So FNCE is not the only way that you can network.

There are difference conferences and different symposiums that are taking place throughout

the year.

Tons and tons of conferences that you can go to, that you can network with, and that

you can get your name out there.

Now let me say something: If you're a shy individual...I'm a shy individual as well,

but we have to learn how to improve on our people skills.

So notice your weak points and work on those weak points to network.

Another fabulous place to network is at your local dietetics association.

Join that!

The next thing that you want to do, let's say for instance all the other things I mentioned

did not work you want to volunteer.

Something that I was planning to do, I don't quite remember if its before I finish my internship

or after I finished college, but something that I wanted to do, my plan C, because I

always have a plan A, plan B, and plan C. My plan C was to join the Peace Corps because

I'm like you know what the Peace Corp will give me experience, it will look good on my

resume, it's going to allow me to network with some people, hey I may be employed

in the United Nations.

So have a plan C where you do some type of volunteer work, volunteer activity that puts

your name out there.

Now, you don't have to be all dramatic like me and [desire] go to the Peace Corp, but food banks,

food shelters, nursing homes.

So realize that volunteer opportunities, even though you're not getting paid for them, they

create opportunities for you.

So guys these are just my quick tips on how to score a job right after you do your internship,

right after you graduate.

Because I personally, I know it happens, but I don't believe that individuals should be

waiting like a year; that happens some people can't find a job for a year, in order to get

a job; but, realize whatever avenue is opened up for you, even if you don't like it, even

if you don't want to be a clinical dietitian or a community dietitian, take it, it gives

you experience.

You as a new graduate you're competing with those graduates that graduated a year or two

years before you who are still trying to find the perfect job.

So if you guys have any questions related to the job process please feel free to leave

it in my comment section below.

You guys remember to like and subscribe and I'm sorry for the background noise of this

individual cutting their lawn...my pet peeve.

Do have a good day.

The Silent Era: Crash Course Film History #9 - Duration: 9:16.

Hollywood, here we come!

The glamor!

The celebrities!

The scandals!

I'm not talking about Bennifer or Brangelina.

Craig: Are they still things? Nick: No... Craig: I'm kind of out of touch.

But I'm not out of touch with the Golden Age of Silent Cinema, when stars rose and fell, studios

perfected the mass production of films, and American movies dominated the global film market.

In some ways, it was very different from the Hollywood we know today.

Movie studios wielded enormous power.

They kept stars and directors under tight control.

The movies they made were silent.

And a ticket would set you back a whopping 10 or 25 cents.

On the other hand, a lot of the patterns set during this time still seem awfully familiar today.

Studios marketed films on the power of their stars.

Genres like gangster movies and romantic comedies took hold and flourished.

And audiences craved gossip about the private lives of celebrities.

To understand the world as it is, sometimes you have to go back to where it all began.

And for Hollywood, that's the Silent Era.

[Opening Music Plays]

Film was going in a lot of different directions

after the First World War.

In Germany, filmmakers drew on the Expressionist movement to manipulate their film's mise-en-scene,

creating groundbreaking horror films.

In Russia, Soviet filmmakers were using cinema to perfect the arts of propaganda through

revolutionary editing techniques.

And in the US, the Hollywood studio system was positioning itself to dominate the rest

of the world.

Within film studios, the entire filmmaking process took place – from conceiving, writing,

and shooting the films, to marketing and distribution.

The studios had chosen California for its film-friendly sunny weather, its proximity

to all kinds of terrain, and ... its distance from Thomas Edison, who spent much of the

1910s fighting for control of the American film industry from his base in New Jersey.

In the early days of the Silent Era, three film studios ruled them all: the Famous Players-Lasky

Corporation, which would eventually become Paramount Pictures – Loew's Inc., which

began as a theater chain – and First National Pictures.

Not only did these three dominate the marketplace, they exercised near complete control over

the creative and personal lives of their stars, writers, and directors.

Filmmakers often had to choose between following the studio's orders or abandoning their careers.

Then, four of the most powerful figures in early silent cinema came together to create

their own film studio.

In 1919, two directors – Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith -

and two stars -- Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford – founded United Artists.

Their goal was to give filmmakers more control over their films and a greater percentage

of the profits.

CHA-CHING! Is what I assume they would say.

Of course, not many filmmakers could afford to go out on their own like that, so the contract

system would continue for several more decades.

In 1924, the most powerful studio emerged when Loew's purchased Goldwyn Pictures and

Louis B. Mayer Productions to create Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, better known as MGM.

Which lead to MGM studios which lead to Tower of Terror,

and have you been on Tower of Terror? That's a pretty fun time.

This is a process that would get repeated throughout the 1920s and 1930s, as studios

merged or sold or split apart.

Probably because of prohibition and they didn't have anything else to do.

By the end of the era, most American films were being made at studios whose names you

might recognize from the multiplex today: not only United Artists and MGM, but also

Warner Brothers, Fox, Universal, and Columbia Pictures.

Now while the corporate structure of these companies kept changing, the process by which

they were making films was becoming remarkably stable and efficient. Unlike me.

The major studios became very good at churning

out large-scale, commercial movies with mass appeal.

One of the leading innovators in setting up the way studios worked was a man named Thomas H. Ince.

Like D.W. Griffith, Ince came to film as a failed actor.

He directed his first film in 1910, and by 1913 he was making as many as 150 two-reelers

a year!

His biggest impact on film came by applying the lessons of mass production to the actual

making of movies.

Prior to Ince, most films were overseen by a director-cameraman – a single person who

conceived the story, worked with the actors, and operated the camera.

Ince broke those roles into separate jobs:

A screenwriter to conceive the story and write the script.

A director to make creative decisions on set and work with the actors.

An editor to assemble the footage.

A producer to supervise the project from inception to final cut.

And a studio head to oversee the entire studio.

While other filmmakers had played around with these roles, it was Ince who standardized

them into a system – a system still used today.

By 1912, he'd earned enough money to buy a ranch west of Hollywood where he built his

own studio, a place he called Inceville…

Yep!

It was here where the first permanent exterior sets were built, made to resemble far flung

locations, like a cowboy saloon, a little Swiss street, or a Japanese village.

And as Ince worked to define the roles and streamline the means of production, he was

able to triple the output of his studio.

Though he died quite young in 1924, Ince's impact on film production was as thorough,

widespread, and lasting.

Now, Mack Sennett, another early film mogul and one-time partner of Ince, was responsible

for discovering a whole slew of film legends, whose names you might recognize.

People like the Keystone Cops, Fatty Arbuckle, Gloria Swanson, Carole Lombard, W.C.

Fields, and… the great Charlie Chaplin.

Let's talk a little bit about Charlie Chaplin.

He was born into poverty in England in 1889.

He went into acting, signed with a prestigious Vaudeville touring company, and set off for

America at age 19.

A film talent scout spotted him there, got him hired by Sennett, and the rest is history.

That we're gonna talk about because we're talking about Film History.

Smart, curious, and driven, it didn't take long for Chaplin to develop his iconic Tramp

persona and begin directing his own films.

After finishing his first film contract, Chaplin struck an extremely lucrative deal with the

Chicago-based Essanay Studios to make 14 short films.

While at Essanay, he found ways to combine his finely tuned sense of empathy and his

recognizable Tramp character with a growing ability to make audiences laugh – through

both physical comedy and increasingly clever storylines.

In fact, he was so popular that by the time his Essanay contract was up in 1915, he negotiated

an almost unprecedented salary of $10,000 per week with another studio, the Mutual

Film Corporation.

They also paid him a signing bonus of $150,000 – the equivalent of about $3.5 million today.

CHA-CHING! Is what they would have said at the time.

The movies Chaplin made with Mutual brought him international stardom.

They marked the first time his focus on the poor verged into social criticism, a place

silent comedies rarely, if ever, went.

True to his roots – and despite being one of the highest paid people in the world – Chaplin's

films often focused on the gentle, accidental heroism of the downtrodden.

Time and again, he made the powerful the butt of his jokes and displayed tremendous empathy

for the poor and the humble.

Then in 1919, at age 30, he co-founded United Artists in an effort to exercise greater control

over his films.

I'm 36... I better get moving.

What followed was a string of classic movies that rank not only among Chaplin's best,

but among the best film comedies of all time: The Kid – his first feature film and a smash

hit – The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, and his controversial take-down of

Adolf Hitler, The Great Dictator.

His later career would be hampered by legal problems and socialist sympathies, which would

land him on the infamous post-war blacklist, and keep him from making films.

But at his height, no one benefited more from the Silent Era studio system than Charlie

Chaplin – as a director, making a lot of films quickly and efficiently; and as an actor,

commanding enormous salaries and unheard-of creative control.

And he wasn't the only one to turn this system to his advantage.

Actor-directors like Buster Keaton, "Fatty" Arbuckle, and Harold Lloyd achieved great

success making their own short and feature-length comedies.

Stars from Mary Pickford to Gloria Swanson parlayed their celebrity into tangible behind-the-scenes power.

Now, as film became more and more central to popular culture, some people started to

get nervous.

They worried that movies posed a real threat to public morality.

They saw films promoting materialism, cynicism, sexual license.

This would be a debate that would come up again and again in American culture

– about movies or music or video games.

Until now when we've solved all those problems.

Is the medium causing society's problems,

or just reflecting them?

A few real-life Hollywood scandals at the time tipped the scales, bringing on the first

real self-censorship of American cinema.

The gossip press fed readers stories about stars dealing with addictions, affairs, and worse.

The most famous of these centered around Fatty Arbuckle, who was accused of the rape and

accidental death of an actress named Virginia Rappe.

Although he was ultimately acquitted after three highly-publicized trials, the scandal

itself all but ended Arbuckle's career, and left an opening for a government crackdown

on immorality in films and the film business.

Rather than wait for Congress to get involved, the major players in the film industry banded

together to form the MPPDA – the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America.

They hired a retired Postmaster General named Will Hays, a conservative Evangelical, to

prove they were serious about cleaning up their act.

And that's exactly what Hays did in 1930, putting together the Motion Picture Production

Code, also known as the Hays Code, a catalogue of things filmmakers could and couldn't show on screen.

...fun.

The Code also suggested a strategy called Compensating Values.

The idea was that films could show characters engaging in vice for most of the film, as

long as virtue triumphed in the end.

No one employed this technique better than director Cecile B. DeMille.

He was a master at giving the audience all the vice and excess they could handle for

the first three quarters of the movie, before virtue came out on top.

Other filmmakers found their own ways around the Hays Code.

German director Ernst Lubitsch came to Hollywood in 1922 and made a successful series of witty

sex comedies that relied on suggestion and innuendo rather than skin.

For many of these filmmakers, however, the Hays Code was about to become the least of

their worries.

A seismic event was poised to shake up Hollywood, and not every filmmaker of the Silent Era

was going to come out the other side with their career intact.

The world was about to get its first taste of synchronous sound.

And it tasted good... maybe, I don't know.

Today, we explored the Silent Era, the first golden age of Hollywood filmmaking.

We learned about the innovations of Thomas Ince and the rise of the American film studio.

And we discussed some of the most important Silent Era filmmakers and how their scandals

– both real and imagined – led Hollywood to institute industry standards governing

the content of their films.

Next we'll tackle the biggest shift in the history of film yet, as movies find their
