Welcome to the second episode of TDT TV 2014
I already told you some details about TDT in the course of first episode.
And that's why you may know that we're going to attempt an official world record this time.
It's the first one in the history of TDT.
However, it is not a domino relating record, but a record about another kind of chain reaction.
And now I have an interview with Jonathan for you, so that you better understand what I mean.
I'm here with Jonathan who also filmed last year at the toppling.
Jonathan, where are you from and how did you get to join the team?
I'm from Würzburg in Germany and Mathias invited me to join the team after he found my field planner on the internet.
You just mentioned your field planner. Can you tell me know how it was used in the planning of TDT?
We all well know Tim's field planner which is an Excel based program and where you have to fill in each cell manually.
And I tried to convert a picture directly into a domino field and failed.
My program closed this gap and now you have the possibility to convert a picture into a field and to create a field protocol out of it.
The fields around here were planned with your field planner, weren't they?
That's right. All fields were planned with this programm.
What are your tasks or which is your current project?
My main task is the coordination of the world record attempt.
We try to create a stick bomb.
Stick bomb sounds really harsh when you hear it the first time but it has a connection with domino.
What is a stick bomb made off?
It's made out of sticks as the name already indicates.
The sticks are scoopulas as they were used at the doctor's.
I can also show you how this mechanism works.
You stick them together in the way that they are under pressure and then you can even create patterns.
And when you remove one of these sticks, the others hop in the air.
That's why they're called stick bomb. I will demonstrate it for you.
And how many sticks are used here and what is the current world record?
The current world record is approximately 9,000 sticks.
On YouTube there is a video with 11,000 sticks but this record isn't approved by Guinness World Records
and we try to increase the record to the number of 23,000 sticks on Friday.
Do you have own domino experiences and do you have a YouTube channel?
Yes, of course. My last project was a stadium out of 7,500 dominoes and now I'm working on different screenlinks.
I don't want to reveal too much but they will be about movies.
Fine. Then I would like to wish you all the best for the record attempt and back to Lukas in the studio.
Thank you Samuel and Jonathan.
We're really looking forward to the toppling and to see the stick bomb in action.
Slowly but surely, the setup is going ahead and the team is working together better and better.
That's why we asked ourselves which domino builder is the fastest and so we let them compete in a small competition.
Here is the first part of 'The Domino Competition'
Welcome to 'The Domino Competition'. At the moment, you can see six boxes filled with dominoes here.
But now, 'The Domino Competition' will take place here.
I'm gonna explain the rules now:
The domino builders who'll take place are supposed to set up a domino line of five meters.
On completing their line, they'll have to topple it and the first two domino lines that will reach the start won.
The builders of the two fastest lines will participate in the final on friday.
Now we're gonna call the first of two groups, and each group will send its two fastest builders to the final.
(countdown)
... the first line failed - he has to restart.
... Kevin's line failed as well... - Kevin, how do you feel? - It's very exciting.
- Do you know which color Daniela is using? - No, I don't care about things like this at the moment.
Current intermediate result: 1. Justin, 2. Kevin, ... last: Christian
Justin is just as fast as Rudi Völler, he'd have finished right now.
... Daniela is now on the very last place, her line failed.
Look at Justin who is toppling his line... He achieved the 1st place.
By toppling his line, Kevin achieved the second place.
Now the second semi-final will take place, which will decide about the second two final participants.
(countdown)
Look, a completly new strategy invented by Lukas.
- Samuel, how does it feel building with blue, blue, light blue, dark blue...? - Shut up!
Justin built his line at the same position, the orange ones seen to be the magic line...
Now Samuel is copying Lukas strategy.
Oh, look at this epic jump, he jumped for the falling dominoes just like Oliver Kahn.
Lukas is now filling up the spaces in his line, his line is toppling...
This is the first place for Lukas.
The second line is falling down, and this is the second place for Samuel!
We have to say goodbye now and we're looking forward to the final.
It was pretty exciting and funny.
We will as well present you the final of 'The Domino Competition'.
Now back to Lukas in the Studio.
That was a pretty exciting contest.
In the third episode of TDT TV you'll see the final of 'The Domino Competition'.
In the very first episode you already saw a little bit of the preparatory work.
But before we started setting up the dominoes, the event has to be planned.
This was a big effort, so several people had to work for more than half a year.
Now Mathias and Marcel will talk about this topic.
Normally, their position is behind the camera, so I'll replace them.
Now Samuel will take over.
These two are the main organizers of the TDT event
and they also founded the domino group here in Tulln.
Mathias, please tell me something about the beginnings of TDT.
About ten years ago, we set up some hundred dominoes and filmed the falldown.
In 2008, we started our YouTube channel and uploaded our first videos.
This was six years ago.
After some time, you founded the TDT event.
Marcel, how were the first TDT events like?
We began 2009 in a basement with some 15,000 dominoes.
In comparison to today, this isn't much, but for us it was a sensation
to topple it with some visitors around us.
In 2010 we were able to use the gym of the primary school and set up 30 000 dominoes.
The highlight was a big tower of plastic cups in the end.
The next year, we hat a pretty complicated challenge with a two minute wall,
but Alex made it; in that year we set up 40 000 dominoes.
In 2012, we were able to set up 100 000 dominoes.
In that year, Matthias Heinzelmann and Albert enlarged our team.
Last year, we were in this place for the first time
and were able to make TDT TV.
This year, we are setting up 200 000 dominoes.
Looking back, we improved a lot in my opinion.
If you want to set up 200 000 dominoes, you can't go right into the gym
and start building random things.
How does the planning work? How long were you planning?
Most people think we just go in here and start building up all these dominoes.
That's not correct at all.
A couple of months after TDT, we have to start planning next year's event.
It's at least half a year of work.
There were a lot of weekends we spent on planning
Most people don't know how much work it is.
There's also a lot of work behind TDT TV.
(repeating the same statements for the third time)
And it's a good feeling to see that everything is doing fine.
Mathias, you are responsible for the fieldplans and the masterplan.
Tell us how you're planning all this stuff.
It all stats with a kind of brainstorming to invent suitable projects.
Then we have to convert these images into domino fields.
A picture consists of max. 16,7 million colors,
but we only have 23 colors and the fields are also a lot smaller than the original images
So this is pretty difficult.
This year we are also using several thousand color change dominoes.
Please tell us how you produced them and why they are so special.
This was pretty complicated.
We had to paint all the dominoes on every side except one,
this took us four weekends.
They are so special because you can see the motive after the toppling,
but not before.
The result will be worth its work.
They also made a short video clip painting the dominoes.
I'm here painting the dominoes for this year's color change field.
We alrealdy painted 1,800 dominoes, so there are about 3,000 left.
Of course this was only one of five sides we have to paint.
To show you why the color change is so special,
we'll show you the smartphone field of last year's event.
We're really looking forward to seeing the color change project.
The motive will kept secret until the falldown.
But I can say that it'll be the largest field this year.
Once again, we'll show you the best photos of this day.
In the end of this episode I will answer your feedback.
