Waching daily Jul 25 2017

It's a beautiful day, so Squeaks and I were just about to go to the park and do one of

our favorite summer activities: fly kites!

Kites come in all shapes, sizes, and colors!

You could buy them at a store, but Squeaks and I really want to build our own!

Most basic kites are big and flat, with a long tail.

They're connected to a long piece of string, which you hang on to so you can control how

they fly.

[Squeaks squeaks]

How do kites fly?

That's a good question, Squeaks!

There's more to how a kite stays up in the air than you might think!

It all has to do with that big, flat part of the kite, which is called the sail.

As the kite flies through the air, the sail is tilted, so the back of the kite is a little

bit lower than the front of the kite.

That tilt is really important for keeping the kite in the air, because it changes the

way the air flows over the sail.

As the air flows past, it pushes on the sail.

But because the kite is tilted, the air rushing past the bottom of the kite pushes up on the

kite harder than the air flowing past it on the top.

With the air pushing up on the bottom of the sail, the kite can stay in the air without

falling down.

But there's something else that helps kites stay up in the air, besides the big flat sail.

Can you guess what it is, Squeaks?

[Squeaks squeaks]

That's right!

That big, long tail!

The tail weighs down one side of the sail, which keeps the kite tilted so the air rushes

past it in just the right way to push up on the kite and keep it flying.

Squeaks, now that we know how kites fly, are you ready to build our own?

[Squeaks squeaks]

OK, let's do it!

[to viewers]

You can build your own kite at home, too!

Just make sure to ask a grownup for help with this.

You'll need a heavy plastic sheet that you can cut, like a very strong trash bag.

We're going to use a plastic table cloth!

You'll also need two dowels, which are basically long, straight wooden sticks.

You'll also need a very long piece of thin string or yarn for a line.

At least 100 meters, or 300 feet, would be good.

The more the better!

Plus, you'll want a piece of wood or cardboard to wind the string around and hold on to.

And, of course, we'll need some strong tape, like duct tape or packaging tape, to hold

it all together!

You'll need a ruler, scissors, and a marker, too.

If you're using black plastic for the sail, make sure the marker is a color that you'll

be able to see, like silver.

Ok, Now that we have all the supplies we need, we're ready to make our kite!

Lay the dowels across the plastic in a cross shape, with one of the dowels a little higher

so one half is longer than the other.

Use your ruler to draw a diamond around your dowels, like this.

It's good to make sure the diamond is a little bit bigger than your dowels to make

sure it fits.

Next, have a grownup help you cut the diamond out of the plastic.

You can trim the edges of the plastic if it's a little too big.

Now you can tape the dowels to the plastic.

Make sure they're stuck on really well!

We'll need them to help the sail keep its shape in the wind.

Now tape the dowels together in the middle.

Poke two holes in the plastic along the dowel that goes across the kite lengthwise.

They should be close to the corners, but not all the way at the end of the dowels.

Cut a smaller piece of string, about two times as long as one of the dowels.

Next, flip the kite over and thread one end of the string through one of the holes and

tie it to the dowel, and do the same thing with the other end of the string and the other

hole.

Tape the ends of the string in place to make sure they stay put!

Now, take one end of the rest of your string and tie it to the shorter string, right in

the middle.

You should tape that together too.

Finally, wind the rest of the string around your wood or cardboard handle.

Our kite is done!

[Squeaks squeaks]

Oh, that's right!

We need a tail!

Cut out a long, thin piece of the plastic and tape it to the bottom of the kite.

OK, now our kite is really done!

To fly it, all we need to do is go to a big, open area outside on a day that's a little

windy, but not too windy.

It's easiest if you have a friend or grownup to help!

Hold on to the handle with the string wrapped around it, and have your friend hold on to

the kite.

Unwind about 20 meters, or 60 feet, of the string and stand far enough apart from your

friend so that the string is straight and not hanging down too much.

Your friend should stand with their back to the wind, holding the kite by where the strings

are tied together.

Next, they should let go of the kite so the wind can push it up, while you pull on the

string to get it going!

It might take you a few tries, but in the end, you'll get your kite flying!

Alright, Squeaks!

Let's go fly our kite!

And if you guys make a kite, we'd love to see it and hear how your adventure went went!

Grab a grownup to help you leave a comment below, or send us an email at kids@scishow.com.

We'll see you next time, here at the Fort!

The Stunning Transformation Of Katy Perry - Duration: 6:10.

Katy Perry is one of the most recognizable icons in the world.

We've witnessed her journey from budding artist to huge superstar, but her massive success

didn't happen overnight.

Here's a look at Perry's stunning transformation.

Growing up

Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, Perry was raised, along with her

younger brother, David, and older sister, Angela, in Santa Barbara, California by Pentecostal

pastors, Mary Christine and Maurice Hudson.

The family struggled financially, sometimes relying on food stamps and the church food

bank, for meals.

Perry remembers panhandling and begging on the streets for change, but quickly learned

that she could earn more by capitalizing on some of her natural assets.

After explaining that she would hit up thrift shops for pencil skirts and snug-fitting cardigans,

the singer told Vogue, "I have had this body for a very long time and I would pour into

those clothes very well — so it worked!"

But her looks weren't the only asset she was working.

Christian debut

Perry was originally an aspiring gospel and Christian rock artist.

In a video on a tour bus from those days, Perry shared:

"I'm with the best Christian bands and I'm on tour with them and hanging out with them

and they actually laugh at my jokes.

It's awesome!"

Both Christianity Today and Billboard raved about her debut album, even though it was

a commercial flop.

But Perry wasn't giving up yet.

Musical transformation

Taking on her mother's maiden name, Perry, Katy emerged as a bolder, more mainstream

artist.

"I kissed a girl and I liked it"

As "I Kissed a Girl" hit the airwaves, Perry learned that being risqué could come at a

price — especially for a female artist.

When asked if the song was based on a personal story, she explained to Vanity Fair,

"I said no, I hadn't experienced it, even though I had, because I didn't like where

the guys were taking the interviews."

Her father, who referred to her as a "devil child" during this time, also spoke to The

Sun about his daughter's persona, saying,

"I was at a concert of Katy's where there were 20,000.

I'm watching this generation and they were going at it.

It almost looked like church.

I stood there and wept and kept on weeping and weeping.

They're loving and worshipping the wrong thing."

Still, that didn't dissuade her from continuing to push the envelope with "Teenage Dream,"

and "California Gurls."

Sex symbol

Having come a long way since her awkward teenage days...

"I usually put loads of makeup on before the show because...i'm a pizza face"

...Perry had transformed into what GQ called a "full-on male fantasy."

And Elle reported she looked "as though sketched by a teenage boy."

Perry employed her newfound sexual liberation, and, according to Vogue, was "never exactly

one to shy away from the outrageous or the extreme in any realm."

But what fans were seeing on the outside, was just a taste of the transformation going

on for the singer, inside.

Believe

While showing off her Jesus tattoo in 2010, Perry told Rolling Stone, "God is very much

still a part of my life but the way the details are told in the Bible — that's very fuzzy

for me...

I also believe in extraterrestrials, and that there are people who are sent from God to

be messengers, and all sorts of crazy stuff."

Three years later, she told Marie Claire, "I'm not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not

Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God."

Today, she proudly sings the praises of Transcendental Meditation, a mindfulness technique that she

practices twice a day.

She described her experience to the David Lynch Foundation's executive director, Bob

Roth.

"It's like a great workout for your mind, without working out, but you get all the effects

of working out."

Activist

In 2008, Perry openly opposed Prop 8, which would seek to overturn an earlier Supreme

Court decision legalizing marriage equality.

But despite the loss, she continued to stand up for equality.

Of the resistance to LGBTQ rights, Perry told Parade, "Hopefully, we will look back at this

moment and think like we do now concerning [other] civil rights issues.

We'll just shake our heads in disbelief, saying, 'Thank God we've evolved.'"

Perry was a huge supporter of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential Election, the candidate

who regularly promoted equality for the LGBTQ community.

After Clinton lost the election, Perry designed a shoe in her honor.

Philanthropist

2013 was a big year for Perry.

Not only did she team up with UNICEF to provide food and education to children in Madagascar

but she also became one of the organization's Goodwill Ambassadors.

Additionally, Perry donated a portion of the ticket sales from her Prismatic World Tour

to UNICEF, and spearheaded the "Make Roar Happen" project along with Staples, to provide

$1 million to DonorsChoose with the mission of providing funds for classroom resources

in public schools.

Not only did Hillary Clinton present Perry with UNICEF's Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian

Award, the singer also received the Human Rights Commission's 2017 National Equality

Award.

"I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-sized pop songs, for

instance: I kissed a girl and I liked it."

The pop star explained how it had been more than a kiss, but she struggled internally

with her entrenched, anti-gay, childhood beliefs.

Even so, she knew she had hit on something:

"But In 2008 when that song came out, I knew that I started a conversation that a lot of the

world seemed curious enough to sing along to."

Triple threat

Perry can now claim three number 1 albums in her repertoire: Teenage Dream took the

top spot back in 2010, while Prism exploded in 2013.

As she released Witness in June of 2017, Perry explained, "I feel very empowered...liberated

from the conditioning of the way I used to think, spiritually liberated, politically

liberated, sexually liberated, liberated from things that don't serve me."

We can't wait to see what Perry will do next!

The Real Reason Why Valerian Flopped At The Box Office - Duration: 5:38.

Things are not looking good for Luc Besson's sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand

Planets.

The expensive film was obliterated at the domestic box office in its opening weekend,

falling in fifth place with only $17 million against a reported $180 million production

budget.

Considering the weight Besson's name carries with sci-fi fans, many may be surprised to

hear that his most recent outing had that much trouble finding an audience.

However, there were actually quite a few warning signs that Valerian would fail.

Here are the real reasons why Valerian was an intergalactic disappointment at the box

office.

Little-known source material

Valerian is based on the French comic strip which ran from 1967 to 2010.

Besson had been reading the comic since he was a child, and dreamed of adapting it into

a film for years.

But he had to wait until he had the right technology and experience to pull off the

comic's unique vision.

Despite its wide readership overseas, though, the comic never quite found an audience in

the United States.

So, when the title for Besson's passion project popped up on potential audiences' feeds, a

lot of people weren't as familiar with the comic characters as some of those other superhero

stories that tend to tear up the box office.

The familiarity factor that's such a draw for similar adventure movies was gone right

from the start.

Story confusion

Compounding the confusion was the fact that Valerian seemed to offer audiences vague marketing

materials that didn't little to explain what Valerian was actually about.

The previews focused heavily on the film's style over its content and focused on off-putting

aspects of the story.

"You flirt.

I smile."

None of the trailers took the time to go through the reality of the threat against Alpha or

to discuss why Valerian and Laureline were chosen to stop it, which made the previews

feel hollow and unimpressionable.

"We need the two of you to be the guardians of our future."

While the marketing might've drawn in a few viewers who'd want to see Besson's visual

spectacle unfold, focusing entirely on the style over substance in the marketing wasn't

necessarily a smart choice.

Since a lot of would-be audience members aren't familiar with the comic series, that lack

of understanding may have just been a turn-off at the ticket booth.

Ho-hum reviews

Some well-established sci-fi worlds have been able to pull in both dedicated and casual

fans alike, while others have struggled to find the mass market appeal necessary to make

up their huge budgets.

As with any movie with an unusual premise, good reviews can be a huge boost to creating

audience interest when there's not already-established fan-base in place.

With Valerian, though, the critical love line wasn't quite there.

Some reviews panned the leads for not having chemistry and called the story empty, with

the impressive visuals being singled out as a lone point of positivity for the film.

Those middling reviews were hardly enough to bring in sci-fi skeptics who'd maybe been

on the fence about seeing the movie.

Up-and-coming actors

Although Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne are both well known amidst industry circles, neither

have established themselves as bankable blockbuster stars just yet.

DeHaan is best known for his indie film appearances, while Delevingne only recently made the switch

from modeling into the movie star business.

Even those popcorn flicks they have appeared in -- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Suicide

Squad, respectively -- were largely disappointments and did nothing to prove their profitability

or earn them household name recognition.

Stiff competition

The opening weekend for Valerian was packed with alternative options for the theater-going

crowd, including Christopher Nolan's widely praised war epic Dunkirk.

The film offered the visual dynamism Valerian promised, and it had gripping true story subject

matter at the center.

Meanwhile, the R-rated ensemble comedy Girls' Trip offered viewers a chance to let loose

and enjoy some adult humor, which may have been a draw-in for those that are experiencing

a bit of superhero summer fatigue.

The film also came out just two weeks after Marvel's juggernaut Spider-Man: Homecoming

and just one week after the trilogy-ender War for the Planet of the Apes.

While both films saw their box office performances pushed beyond initial expectations due to

strong reviews, it was easy to see that they'd have legs long past their release dates.

The combined array of those four other options might have given theatergoers some pause about

choosing to see Valerian, too.

Creative salvation?

A number of different figures have been thrown around for Valerian's budget, but they all

point to one thing — it was high.

The film, which has been reported as the most expensive French production of all time, likely

cost somewhere around $200 million including marketing.

"Yeah, well, time flies when you're having fun."

That means it'll require a pretty stellar comeback in order to make a profit.

However, there is still some hope for Valerian.

Like many domestic flops in the summer of 2017, the international box office could be

a savior.

The movie is expected to do big business in France, where viewers are familiar with the

comics, and will continue to be rolled out in international territories throughout the

summer.

The best hope for the film, however, comes from Besson's creative method of financing

it.

Tax credits are one of the film's first helpers, with estimates saying that they bump the film's

cost down by $50 million.

The movie is also said to be covering significant parts of its budget through equity financing

and foreign pre-sales.

Still, the slow start for Valerian is not a good sign for the film in the long run,

and is an even worse sign for Besson's already planned follow-up films.

The movie will have to do significant business overseas in order to be considered a success,

and it seems unlikely that it will be able to break its perception as a box office flop.

"HEY."

NO ARTICLE: GENERALLY SPEAKING - Duration: 5:43.

hi !today we'll talk about no article because generally we can guess where to

put definite article, where to put indefinite article but when not to put

article? that is the question !so today I'm going to show you. articles are there

to help us understand what we are talking about exactly and if we use

indefinite articles it means that we're talking about something abstract or

something general and when we use definite article it means that we're

talking about something specific .the absence of article - zero article is the

case of talking about something in general. so here are layers of talking

about things generally. the first layer is indefinite article that we use when

we talk about things in general, and when we talk about something for the first

time. and it is used with countable singular nouns like a dog a car a tree a

person . next layer is when we talk about countable nouns that are plural. here we

do not need an article dogs are lovely. women deserve equal rights. banks are

closed on Mondays. vegetables are good for you

so, plural countable nouns - no article. if you are talking about specific pack of

dogs you can say the dogs were angry, like those dogs who bit your ass or

like in a recipe take, the vegetables and put them into the broth so you're

probably have some vegetables listed in the recipe and now you're supposed to

move on with them so you're talking about specific vegetables - plural

vegetables. but they are specific so here we'll need definite articles - this

is a different case, when we talk about things generally - no article . next is

uncountable nouns and also when we talk about them generally . uncountable

nouns are very big block of nouns so let's get into specifics. let's take

materials and substances and abstract nouns. so

when we talk generally about these uncountable nouns as materials or

substances they will not have any article and let me give you an example

of how we can generally speak about them. there's a saying - blood is thicker than

water. and as little tasks you can google what it

means but here blood is not a specific blood - we don't say human blood and

animal blood whatever blood. we don't we don't specify whose blood we're talking

about. so it's just the concept of blood but in a sentence like : they took the

blood from him. when we start to specify and have, and realize the origin of the

blood there will be a definite article. when the material starts to get some

type of origin, when we know where it's from not in a general sense . or I don't

like coffee but the coffee was terrible. so I don't

like coffee in general but that specific coffee was terrible - still a substance

but in the first example I talk about it generally in the second example I

talk about specific coffee. and abstract nouns - things like love, beauty

hope, hate, weather ,strength. also when we generally talk about the concept of the

thing - no article. like in the phrase"fine whether friends" for every person the

definition fine is different so it's just a concept. yeah ,but the weather was

fine - means the specific weather in the specific day was fine hence we need

an article. or a very simple example I like listening to music

and the music was loud. in the first example we talk about general music not

specific music. I like listening to music and then the second example specific

music is loud, so we need a definite article and it's still an uncountable

abstract noun. so let's sum up :when we talk about things in general we either

use a definite article in cases of singular countable nouns like a

dog and we don't use any article when we talk about plural countable nouns like

dogs and friends and people and when we have uncountable nouns like materials

abstract nouns and many many other things. but ! here's a list of things that

you just have to remember not to put an article before them : names

towns, cities, countries, unless we talk about the government specifications like

the United States - the states need an article not America. America doesn't need an

article. Lakes, islands, continents mountanes, planets , sports games and meals.

so no the before breakfast . so I hope it was helpful and interesting

I hope I'm back. yeah and don't be sad. what? yeah, so thank you for watching

subscribe to my channel you are not a subscriber and yeah I'll see you in my

next video. bye!

Introducing Fusion CST Trainers Hannah Eden and Michael Vaszquez - Duration: 3:57.

I'm Hanna Eden. I am 26 years old and I am a fitness professional.

My name is Michael Vasquez and I'm from Los Angeles California

The fact they are under constant resistance. You don't have to necessarily stop what you're doing in

order to get a little bit more you just need a little bit further away from the

machine to step things up. The amount of things that you can do on it is insane,

like I got super creative. The list is endless.

Intensity. Your heart rate is going to be

pumping the entire time you're going to be working out with me.

I am a total weirdo so I guess when I work out and I coach your work out I got to embrace

that person and just get wild. I'm a little inappropriate...

...

to a certain degree. I expect a certain standard of exercise from everyone that

comes into my class. And I also like to have a lot of fun and goof around.

You know just give it everything you got and I'm going to be right there with you.

My favorite person work out with is Hannah Eden. She's Awesome.

And she empowers women! What better way to do that but making women more badass?

Females can be strong man! There's no way that I'm going to be okay with

any male beating me inside the gym now and that's a constant battle with myself that,

oh she's a female she's going to come after boys! No way man! Like I'm going

to leave everything I got on the floor and I really believe that every female

should empower their strength. That strength is beautiful and we're all equal.

Okay, so when I started fitness I had no idea what I was doing, nutrition wise, anything.

I knew how to break dance from high school, so I just had this idea of kind

of fusing them all together, break dance, traditional lifting, and endurance training.

And just said you know what I want to challenge myself. I want to keep

moving so I just fused them all together.

I'm gonna go into a cheat meal and I'm going to

describe a burger to you that might make you drool.

We're going to try to live healthy. I Eat Sour Patch Kids, okay?

With cheese. A lot of it.

Doughnuts.

Extra thick sizzling bacon.

Pizza.

Salt and vinegar chips,

garlic aioli, spicy mayonnaise, jalapeños, and a fried egg right on top. You want one?

I can go on like this.

Me too.

you know my son is my son is everything you know. He really

helps you know he gives me all the inspiration and motivation I need

because I look at him and you know I want him to be strong and what better

role model but his father to be strong?

I would say, just begin. Get a very clear

vision of what you need to do in order to take the first step.

Believe in yourself you know it's so important you know I was probably two

months in working out for the first time and I hate it life you know I didn't

want to do things I there were days that I wanted to give up.

I feel like if you walk into it and into the fitness world with

no guidance it's scary, it's intimidating,

it's really hard to stay motivated. it's really hard to stay engaged and to get results.

Everything with fitness is about patience and progression. You know

you're not going to achieve all the results in one day, you know this is all

about time. Stay committed set yourself short-term goals as well as long-term

goals and do not stop until you reach them.

You know, having fun when you're

working out is everything because this is something that you should grow to love.

Don't stop until you succeed once you feel that feeling I promise you

you're going to continuously set goals and you're going to get stronger and

fitter and you're going to release your true potential.

I encourage you to keep believing yourself and do not give up because the moment you give up might be

the day you're going to get your results.

It's not always about physical, it's what you

mentally realize you're capable of and I think that's from just proving yourself

and teaching yourself discipline inside of a gym that you can transcend

that into your real life and break down some crazy mental barriers and literally

the sky's the limit.

But if you skip leg day you're not my friend... I don't... I don't want anything to do with you.

Never skip leg day BRA! You don't want to do that!

Don't get an upper body like this a skinny legs! every day's leg day.

I'm coming after you!

Faces of Fighting - Gilmar Oliveira - Duration: 17:43.

My name's Gilmar Oliveira, I'm 39 years old.

I've been competing since I was 19.

I live in the city of Gama, Brasília, in the Federal District.

I like doing jiu-jitsu.

Everything I do, I try to master.

I intend on doing it up until God allows me.

Actually, I wasn't looking for jiu-jitsu,

I knew very little about it.

I was looking for boxing at the gym,

and I saw a jiu-jitsu class.

I liked it and decided to try it.

At that time, people had a very backward perception of this sport,

also of Vale Tudo fighting.

They thought it was only about punching.

There was a lot of prejudice.

I'd hear jokes that we were grabbing each other,

Silly things like that.

I started competing 3 months after I'd started to train.

I've always been very competitive,

There were athletes at my gym whom I thought of highly.

They weren't even high ranked yet,

at that time there weren't many of those.

The guy who was surprising on the mat, was a purple belt.

We were dazzled by his game.

I thought to myself: "I wanna be like him, I wanna get there."

It's a pity, because he's still my friend,

but he stopped at purple belt... and I continued.

He could've had a longer journey.

I saw it as my purpose, though.

I think that's how students see me today,

"I want to be like this guy."

It's how students see other top athletes.

Athletes admire a bit of each.

I get a lot of compliments on my game,

from people I don't know,

who aren't even from my academy.

I feel very good when it happens,

because the same admiration I had towards my purple belt friend,

today athletes have towards me,

even black belt athletes.

It's very important.

I like it.

I like the adrenaline when you step on the mat,

with someone you don't know,

or with a guy who you know is a good competitor.

I enjoy this feeling.

Once, at an Abu Dhabi qualifier in São Paulo,

I fought a guy to whom I practically had to

show my ID,

very nice guy, we became friends after.

It was last year and he couldn't believe I was 38.

He was complaining that he was 31, fighting in the adults category.

I told him he still had a lot in front of him.

I feel good fighting both in the Adults and Masters.

I've fought only a few times in Masters, I still fight more in Adults.

You always have something to learn, even at local competitions.

You shouldn't discredit anyone.

At times, someone you've never seen before surprises you.

This happens a lot.

I exposed my foot at this competition.

I did something very silly, a white belt mistake.

Not to belittle any white belts,

but I couldn't work for three months,

neither give classes.

It complicated my life a bit.

I was fighting this guy who I know, he's from Ribeiro.

I was already winning 12-0,

If I'm not wrong, there were 15 seconds left in that fight,

I had a rear naked choke locked in,

but he's very strong, kept holding my arms, defended very well.

What I wanted was to submit him.

When I crossed my legs to get a better squeeze,

he took the opportunity to throw himself to the back,

and I ended up breaking my tibia.

I shouldn't have done that because it was simply arrogant of me.

Even though I was winning the fight, I wanted to finish him.

Even if I'd let him come after me, he wouldn't have caught up on points.

He apologized to me later but it happens in fights,

I don't hold any grudge,

I like him a lot, he's a very nice guy.

That's it.

I've already had some difficulties in doing guard,

until the middle of my time at purple belt,

so I started to police myself:

"If I want to be a complete guy, I need to learn both",

because most of the guys at my weight category, over 100kg, don't do it.

Maybe very tall guys with long legs do,

but shorter guys like me, who are 1,80m, don't do guard.

I look to do it.

I usually surprise opponents in my weight class,

because I pull guard.

When I see too much standing and nobody's pulling guard, I go for it.

I'm considered fast for my weight.

Many people have told me that.

So I'm always ready.

I want to surprise, not to be surprised,

so whatever the guy does, I'm prepared for.

I think the majority of competitors are like that.

If I fight a guy and see fire in his eyes,

I know he's up to something.

If I notice he's a judoka, I take it to the ground,

because I know he's got a good base.

I'm not very good at takedowns.

I do have some aces up my sleeve,

but I won't stay on the feet with a great judo fighter.

<< Gilmar Oliveira plays from the open guard,

due to his flexibility.

With all that strength, he's able to put his foot behind his head.

He's very explosive and flexible.

When we noticed it, I told him not to do closed guard,

and play open guard.

I advised him to do closed guard only to finish guys,

and that's what he does.

I remember a competition where his opponent asked me:

"Professor Piezi, do you only teach Gilmar to take the back and submit?"

I replied: "Isn't that good?"

<< I've never seen a light roll with Professor Gilmar

and I don't know it.

Sometimes I see him playing around with white belts,

and I think to myself: "I wish I were this white belt"

because I've never experienced that.

He's never out of shape and I think that's exceptional.

He was born genetically gifted to do jiu-jitsu,

because he works a lot as a security guard,

so, unlike others, he doesn't have much time to train,

but competes like a professional.

<< Many top athletes who know Gilmar's potential,

meet us at events such as the Brazilian Nationals,

they always ask: "Where's Gilmar?"

We explain the difficulties he's got.

He works, has family, children...

If an athlete wants to go on this path of competitions,

and become a professional,

He needs to have this freedom to

travel, compete every weekend,

He needs to get sponsors,

because it's expensive.

So, unfortunately sometimes he's stuck,

managing his situation at work, training, family and children.

I think this is Gilmar's biggest difficulty today.

<< I work as a security guard.

It's brought me some good things and good friends,

who admire me and somehow found videos of my fights.

It was a very good thing for me,

because I've gotten many new students through that.

Now I have a group of doctors who train with me.

It's a private training.

All of this started here from my work,

but until that moment no one had really known about it.

I was known only for what I do here, at the hospital.

I didn't talk about what I did as an athlete.

I was discrete about it as I don't like talking about myself.

I don't have a sponsor,

I used to have one.

I do it because I love the sport.

I pay out of my own pocket.

Sometimes the doctors who train with me help me.

I don't work out very much,

basically, I don't work out.

When I have some time, I run here and there,

or do some working out in the street.

I'm not much for gyms,

I don't go to the gym.

Thank God I have friends in many places.

This really makes a difference in my life.

I'm welcomed wherever I go.

Many friends invite me to their academies.

This makes a difference because I get a lot of different training.

I think the old graduation system should come back,

where your instructor looks at you and analyzes you.

I think there should be this differentiation.

If an older guy doesn't want to compete,

he's at the academy only because he enjoys training,

let's see how we can evaluate his progress slowly,

He'll never be a top athlete.

At least for the ones who wanna compete,

they should be evaluated by the instructor,

not by how long they spend in each belt.

<< When Gilmar enters the fight zone,

we all go in with him.

This makes us very happy.

It makes the academy work better.

Students push themselves harder,

especially the ones who like competing,

If there were a doll of Gilmar, they would all want one.

<< What I see often and try to talk about it with some beginners,

is the ambition to be better than you.

They can become better than you but it takes time.

Sometimes they come at you and end up injuring you.

I tell them to be patient and go slowly,

and teach them some things.

Everything gets better that way.

I always try to help my training partners.

If I see they're doing something wrong,

I finish them and then point out where they made the mistake:

"You have to improve this or that, your position was wrong."

I work in this way with guys whom I even don't know.

I'm used to helping people.

There are some who say: "Man, you are so strong!"

but they forget that you can also be a technical guy,

because if it were only strength... I grapple with guys who are as strong as a horse.

When I fight in the ultra heavy category, I'm usually one of the smallest fighters.

When they talk too much about my strength,

for a guy who basically doesn't work out,

It makes me wonder if anyone recognizes my technique...

My dream is to one day get up on the podium with my son next to me,

for me to be there, cheering for him in his corner,

later he'd be in my corner supporting me,

for me to go there, give him a hug and put a medal on his chest.

My daughter Leticia admires me too,

She says to people that her father is good.

I can tell she's proud of me,

but when I tell her to train a little with her brother, she doesn't want to,

very rarely she does.

I hope it will change,

because if she wants to, this dream would be our trio.

The three of us on the mat,

the three of us on the podium.

<< I'm a fan of your dad!

<< My son, Nícolas, is still very little, he's only seven,

but I really want to see him one day fighting in the Adults

I'll be in Masters, I don't know which number...

but I'll be there fighting.
