Disturbing Things Everyone Just Ignores About Hugh Hefner - Duration: 4:00.
In 1953, Hugh Hefner created Playboy magazine, building a multi-media brand and launching
a debate about the media's treatment of women that still rages today.
Hefner turned it into a brand, with himself as its unofficial mascot.
Along the way he broke down some barriers, but he also crossed a lot of lines.
Here's a look at just some of the disturbing things everyone just ignores about Hugh Hefner.
Violation of consent
Playboy launched to major fanfare thanks to the fact that the first issue featured
photos of legendary blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe.
One problem: the photos were published without her consent.
Unable to find work and desperate for money, Monroe had actually been paid just $50 to
pose in the buff way back in 1949 for a calendar.
Ashamed, she did the shoot under a fake name and begged the photographer never to reveal
it was her.
Once she became famous, though, Hefner bought the rights to the photos for $500 and used
them to launch his empire - all without ever even meeting Marilyn.
"Do you feel like you missed out by not being able to have her here in your home?"
"Oh, yes.
Absolutely, yes."
Hefner would go on to use this same tactic again and again over the decades.
In 1985, for instance, he published photos of Madonna from 1979 when she posed as an
artist's model.
And in 1987, it was Vanna White whose old modeling photos were exploited, despite the
fact that White and Hefner were friends at the time.
"He was my friend, he said we're going to put you on the cover."
"I said, Hef, if you put me on the cover, my career could be ruined, you know?
And they did it anyway."

He tried to bribe Holly Madison
For eight years, Holly Madison was one of Hefner's "girlfriends," but in 2008 she decided
to ditch her bunny ears and left Hef.
In 2015, she released a tell-all memoir titled Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and
Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny.
In the best-seller, she claimed Hefner attempted to bribe her to remain at the Playboy Mansion
by intentionally leaving his will out for her to see.
According to Madison, Hefner planned to bequeath her $3 million if she stayed.

The allowance ritual
Madison was one of the stars of the hit reality series The Girls Next Door, but like the rest
of the girls, she wasn't paid for that work.
Instead, Hefner compensated his "girlfriends" by paying them $1,000 a week to live with
him in the Playboy Mansion and giving them all the free plastic surgery they wanted.
And the allowance ritual was especially degrading.
According to former Playmate Izabella St. James, who wrote Bunny Tales: Behind Closed
Doors at the Playboy Mansion, Hefner would have the girls line up in his bedroom every
Friday and essentially beg for the money while he publicly reviewed their performance .
St. James wrote, "Most of the complaints were about the lack of harmony among the girlfriends—or
your lack of participation in the 'parties' he held in his bedroom."
"If we'd been out of town for any reason and missed one of the official 'going out' nights,
he wouldn't want to give us the allowance.
He used it as a weapon."
He buddied up with Bill Cosby
In May, 2016, TMZ reported that a woman who accused Bill Cosby of assaulting
her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 had added Hefner to the lawsuit, claiming the Playboy
kingpin knew about Cosby's alleged predatory behavior but did nothing to protect her.
According to the victim, it was Hefner who introduced her to Cosby.
The suit alleges Hefner had a habit of inviting "...young and impressionable and possibly
minor children to his residence and providing alcoholic beverages."
And she's not the only one coming forward with allegations that Hefner was complicit
in Cosby's crimes: In June, 2017, Page Six reported that Cosby was being brought to trial
for allegedly touching a 15-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in 1974.
What's not in doubt is the fact that Cosby was a frequent flyer at the mansion for decades
and a close friend of Hefner's, a relationship the two played up for laughs.
"I wish you had a present for me."
"Well, I do.
You're gonna be really surprised."
"Party, party!"
"Hef told me I was with you.
Get it?"
Hefner issued a statement in 2014 that seems to simultaneously support and oppose the comedian.
"Bill Cosby has been a good friend for many years and the mere thought of these allegations
is truly saddening.
I would never tolerate this kind of behavior, regardless of who was involved."
Whether or not he's telling the truth is something the courts will decide.

Renting Pandas - Duration: 3:49.
Whether in D.C., London, Adelaide or Madrid, nearly all giant pandas in today's zoos
are technically there on a 5 or 10-year loan from China, and at a substantial price.
It hasn't always been this way, though.
Beginning in the late 1950s and through the early 1980s, the People's Republic of China
used the gift of a giant panda as a means of diplomacy; during those three decades,
they gave over 23 pandas to nine countries including Great Britain, Japan, Spain, United
States and Mexico.
Most of these gifted pandas have perished (in captivity, giant pandas have an approximate
30 year lifespan compared to about 20 years in the wild), although at Mexico City's
Chapultpec Zoo, two "grandfathered" pandas who are offspring of former gifted parents,
Shaun Shuan and Xin Xin, remain.
However, other than these two, it is difficult to find a giant panda that doesn't belong
to China.
Why?
In the early 1980s, China changed its policy and decided to make a little money off of
this one-of-kind creature that, up until recently, was really difficult to breed in captivity.
Accordingly, today China charges around $500,000 to $1,000,000 per year for the loan of a giant
panda, with, at least in the case of the United States rentals since 2011, a considerable
amount of that money required to go to giant panda conservation efforts.
As for the offspring of rented pandas, according to the terms of the loans, any cubs born to
rented-out giant pandas are China's property and must be returned to the country after
roughly two years; in addition, if a cub dies while on loan and it is deemed to be because
of human error, a penalty in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range may also be
assessed.
The Chinese government also requires a life insurance policy be taken out on each panda
loaned out.
In the United States, the contracted life insurance policy must be $1 million, set to
be paid to the Chinese government should the panda die.
In addition, according to the current U.S. contract, if the death is deemed to be from
improper care or otherwise caretaker error, an additional $800,000 must be paid to China.
Beyond the cost of acquiring them, giant pandas are also expensive for zoos to maintain, as
they require special housing and, of course, enormous amounts of fresh bamboo – with
an adult eating up to 40 pounds of the fibrous plant each day.
(Note: if the bamboo isn't fresh enough, the pandas simply won't eat it, requiring
that it either be grown nearby or imported regularly.)
For reference on the total costs here, in the last two decades the San Diego Zoo claims,
after all associated costs have been tallied, they've spent over $40 million on their
giant panda exhibit.
However, the president of Zoo Advisors, David Walsh, notes that "Yes, they are expensive
to maintain and exhibit, but they are a tremendous draw.
It does make economic sense, if you have the right market."
For example, in the year 2000, the first year the Atlanta zoo had giant pandas, it broke
attendance records, and after its first cub, Mei Lan, was born in 2007, it saw another
attendance surge
of 25%.

Hi, I'm Rob.
Hi, I'm Mo.
And I'm Pendo.
Today we're going to be talking about getting involved with clubs and student organizations
on campus.
Students from all four schools: Barnard, CC, SEAS, GS, can be involved in over 500 student
organizations.
There are performance arts groups, student government, identity based clubs, pre-professional
organizations, activist and advocacy groups, Greek life, clubs sports, and more.
And they're all ready to welcome you, the incoming students, into Barnard and Columbia.
We'll be talking about a few of the clubs and organizations that we as committee members
are a part of.
So one of the things that I'm most involved with on campus is the poetry and writing community
at Barnard.
I help to run the Barnard Writing Collective, which is also the Barnard and Columbia Poetry
Slam Team.
I'm involved in the Undergraduate Recruitment Committee.
We mainly give tours around campus during the school year.
I'm also an engineering tour coordinator which means that I help to run and organize what
the engineering tours look like.
It's just a really great opportunity to show off your school pride, but to also engage
with incoming students and kind of see ways in which that you can help further guide their
college selection process.
So, I'm involved with a dance group called Raw Elementz.
We're a hiphop dance group on Barnard and Columbia's campus.
We perform both on and off campus.
We practice about twice weekly, and my favorite part about being on Raw is the Rawcus showcase
that we host in April where we invite all of the dance groups at Barnard and Columbia
to come perform in front of an audience of about 500 students.
My one piece of advice for getting involved is... especially like in your first semester
or first year, think really broadly, and just about anything that you're maybe even vaguely
interested ... just even go to like the first couple of meetings.
Throughout your years you'll find yourself fine-tuning that list.
I agree.
During your first year, you should try to think as broadly as possible.
As you get older and you become a second or third year student, you should try to fine-tune
that down so that you can really devote all of your energy to one or two things.
That's how you get the most value out of clubs on campus.
I think my advise would be to definitely look at clubs that have to do with what you're
studying, but also look at clubs that are just things that you can do for fun because
I think that's really important especially your first year...
finding things that are academic but also finding things that are relaxing or just make
college more fun.
So, we only represent a few of the clubs on campus, but if you have any questions about
these clubs or anything else, feel free to message us, and we can put you in contact
with the people on campus who are involved in all of the 500 clubs at Columbia and Barnard.
To find out more about any of the clubs and organizations on campus, be sure to attend
at least one of the club fairs during the first week of classes.
The Barnard club fair will take place on Wednesday September 6th, and the Columbia club fair
will take place on Friday, September 8th.
Be sure to check out both because almost all clubs are available to students from all four
schools.
