Waching daily Jul 28 2017

My granddaughters like American Ninja Warrior.

In fact, my 7 year old granddaughter convinced her father to make floating steps to practice with.

But there is more to Ninja Warrior training than floating steps.

So she asked me to make some hand balls, pistons, and grips.

Granddaughters rule -

so off I go to my lathe to turn some cedar into an assortment of grips for hand and upper body strength training.

I'll be making four balls, two pistons and two truncated cones.

The balls do not have to be perfect spheres but I want them reasonably close.

For a perfect sphere, see my other videos.

I've turned perfect spheres before. But that is overkill for these.

After all, Ninjas have to adapt to whatever they run into.

Fortunately, I learned a new tip from Julio Marcolongo at the Utah Woodturning Symposium.

It consists of a hole in a small disk. When held against a sphere, any gap indicates an area for smoothing.

I've mounted some vinyl flooring to a face plate with double stick tape.

With a gouge, I'm cutting a hole then cutting the perimeter.

After rough turning down to a cylinder between centers,

I'm cutting dovetail tenons on both ends before mounting the cylinder in a 4 jaw chuck.

My cylinder is too long to work safely with so I'm parting it in half making sure I push back the tail stock before cutting through the wood.

I do not want a nasty bind.

Then I'm marking off the first ball's length and midpoint.

I'm aiming for 2 ½ inches in diameter. I'm marking the length with partial parting cuts.

As a guide, I'm forming an octagon before rounding over the sphere.

My gauge indicates high spots on the surface

to remove with shear scrapes or with my skew as a scraper.

To hang the ball, I'm drilling a 5/16" hole for the Lag Thread Screw Eye but only ¼" deep.

Then switching to a 3/16 bit to drill to full depth.

I sanded these balls only with 80 grit paper with beeswax and mineral oil.

The sand paper evens out major ridges. I do not want a polished surface.

After parting off the ball, I touched up the end just a little bit.

Then off to make three more balls the same way.

Next, I'll turn two pistons about eight inches long and 2 inches in diameter out of cedar.

These are a bit advanced for her.

After roughing the cedar down, I cut a mounting tenon and switched to a chuck mount.

Then continued roughing it with a gouge close to two inches before switching to a skew for smoothing and final sizing.

Then drill the 5/16 and 3/16 mounting hole.

Then round off the upper edge before parting off the piston.

Since the piston is near chuck size, I'm wrapping the end with tape, remount

it in the chuck to round and smooth off the bottom. And repeat for the second piston.

Next, I'll turn two tapered grips. These are truncated cones. These are easier for her than the pistons but harder than the balls.

Still, a good item for her to train with. The process is much the same as the pistons.

Rough the wood and cut a tenon before remounting to the chuck. Then cut off the excess.

I'm drilling the lag screw hole now; the order does not matter much.

Then cut the ends to nearly the maximum and minimum diameter before smoothing a taper between them with a skew.

I'm doing what I can to clean up the bottom end before parting off the tapered grip.

Well, that's my endorsement from a 7 year old.

That's all for American Ninja Warrior training gear - we'll see you again next week for another woodturning video.

Please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends.

Always wear your full face shield –goggles are not enough protection.

Until next week, this is Alan Stratton from As Wood Turns dot com. Let's keep turning.

The Weeknd Previews 'Reminder' Remix With Rocky and Thug? - Duration: 1:42.

What's up, guys?

Beija here for Complex News.

On Thursday night, The Weeknd sent his fans into a frenzy by releasing two short snippets

of unreleased music.

Both were from an upcoming remix of his song "Reminder."

One featured Young Thug:

And the other had ASAP Rocky.

At around the same time, the Weeknd's co-manager Amir "Cash" Esmailian shared the upcoming

song's cover art.

Not long afterwards, the singer himself revealed that the song is coming on Tuesday.

The remix is a savvy move to boost "Reminder"'s already considerable commercial success.

The track was in the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks starting last December, and it hit

a peak position of number thirty-one.

The song got a renewed burst of attention in February, when its star-studded video was

unveiled.

Among the people who appear in the clip were Drake, YG, French Montana, and—you probably

saw this one coming—ASAP Rocky.

The Weeknd and Thug have a little history as well.

Both of them appeared, along with Chance the Rapper, on Jeremih's remix of "Pass Dat,"

which was released last summer.

And both The Weeknd and Thugger showed their love for the ASAP mob back in January by appearing

at the annual Yams Day celebration in New York City.

We'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out exactly what the collaboration between the

three stars is going to sound like.

But even the few seconds we've already heard has already gotten a whole lot of media attention.

To hear the final product, make sure to subscribe to Complex on YouTube.

For Complex News, I'm Beija Velez.

(Airsoft) Unboxing the ARP9 G&G - Duration: 15:15.

Thanks to them !

Hello YouTube and welcome to this new unboxing video !

Today as you can see I received a big package from G&G

A package which has been sent to me generously by G&G

This package contains two guns : the brand new ARP9, which is an AEG

And a second gun : the GPM92, which is quite new from G&G, a GBB replica of a M9A1

So let's open the box now

Here we have the GPM92, it's not the subject of this video so I'll put it away for now, I'll make a video about it later

And here we have the G&P ARP9

So we have the gun, 300 bbs high cap mag, some bbs, a booklet and a cleaning rod

G&G also included some goodies for me, under the plastic shell, they have been very generous with me

2017 catalog

Here we have gloves, which are Mechanix gloves with G&G logo on them

Always nice to have spare gloves, thanks G&G !

And here I have a T shirt, "G&G World Cup"

For those who don't know, don't hesitate to take a look at it

"WCSC", here the 2017 edition, for "World Cup Shooting Competition"

It's a shooting competition organised by G&G, which seems to be a lot of fun

I never participated to it, I only saw some pictures and videos of it, I'll put links in the description if you want to take a look

So this was for the goodies, now let's focus on the gun

Note here the "customer rewards" card, you get a coupon for a lotery every time you buy a G&G gun, don't forget it if you buy a G&G gun

And here is the G&G ARP9, to be honest I have no idea what "ARP9" is supposed to mean

The precedent G&G gun I tried, the CM16, well I knew that "CM" meant "Combat Machine"

But in this case, I'm not sure... If you know, don't hesitate to write a comment about it

This isn't, I think, an actual replica of an actual gun

But it does look like a gun which could exist

A lot of people seem to think that this gun look like a Sig MPX, which I guess does look a little bit like the ARP9 G&G

In both case you have a "AR15" type of gun using 9mm magazines

But as far as I'm concerned it doesn't look like a MPX but like a ATI MIL Sport 9mm

The angle of the magazine is right

On some 9mm AR15, you get some UZI magazines, which are perpendicular to the body

In this case, the magazine are parralel to the magwell, mostly, just like the ATI Mil Sport 9mm

Another detail : the AR15 type charging handle, which is still here

On the G&G model, it looks a bit like a Batman logo...

It's ambidextrous, for the record

It can be used to pull the fake bolt in order to adjust the hop up

So this what about the real guns, but what do we have here from G&G ?

We have an AEG, with a motor, a Gear Box, etc

It's not a full metal gun : the lower and upper receiver of the gun are made of plastic

The hand guard is made of metal, it's CNC aluminum, I believe it's anodised

It's a M-LOK hand guard, which I think is the first I'm showing on my channel

"M-LOK" is another type of standard for accessorie attachments, the idea is that you have holes here in which you can put M-LOK compatible accessories

Pretty much like the Keymod system

This is the magazine you get with the gun, it looks a lot like a Glock extended mag to me, especially the magazine floor plate

It's a 300 bbs high capacity magazine, with the usual wheel under it

60 bbs midcap magazines should be available later

As said before the gun has been sent to me for free by G&G, thanks a lot to G&G for that

Just like the CM16, this gun shouldn't be too expensive, it appears to be available in Asia for about 200 USD

In Europe, I believe it will be sold betweem 200 and 300 euros

What other things can I say about this gun... It comes with 2 interesting parts : the ETU (Electronic Trigger Unit) and a mosfet which I can show you

Here is the back of the gun, with the PDW style stock ; you unlock it like this, it's a 2 positions stock

A good idea from G&G has been to make a large battery compartment nonetheless

The bad thing being that the stock can't be fully retracted compared to other stocks of the same style, but it's no big deal to me

Note the sling mount here, which is large enough I guess but made of plastic

Let's remove the stock

You can even play without the stock if you want to...

Push this button and remove the battery compartment cap

Inside we have a fuse, mini tamiya connector and the mosfet

This is the same mosfet used in the CM16 I showed on my channel already

This mosfet allows you to change the firing modes

On the gun you have 3 positions : safe, semi auto, full auto

But you can change it and have, instead of the full auto mode, a 3 rounds burst mode

As said before you have the mosfet and the ETU ; both give you several advantages : better reactivity, active breaking

Which means that every time you shoot, the piston will make a full cycle, assuring it won't stay blocked at mid course which can be annoying

Protection from electrical arcs ; the mosfet will also detect if the voltage of your lipo battery is too low

I have this battery which has been generously sent to me by Energy Airsoft not long ago

It's a 11.1V 1400 mAh 25 C, which size seems to be compatible with this gun

Let's try to put it in

Well it goes well inside the compartment, the problem is that I have so much thing to put inside (mosfet, fuse, wires, connectors...) that I'm not sure all will fit

I won't try it yet, for now I'll only show you how the gun shoot

Semi auto

Full auto

Seems good enough to me !

That's one of the thing I didn't like so much about the CM16 (which was still a nice gun)

The motor of the CM16 seems really weak to me

Also, for the CM16, it wasn't indicated in the booklet that you could use a 11.1V battery

But for the ARP9, according to the data sheet I got from G&G, you can use a 11.1V battery

I don't think the motor is exceptionnal, but with a 11.1V battery, we have nice enough reactivity and rate of fire

I'll show you now how to program the mosfet

Put the gun on semi auto and press the trigger for 10 sec

I heard nothing in particular but now I think it's ok

I let the trigger go

Now if I try full auto : I have 3 rounds burst (it shoot 3 bbs no matter how long I press the trigger)

If I want to go back to full auto, same thing : semi auto and I press the trigger for 10 sec

Now I have full auto again

Let's take a look at the trigger

Like a lot of modern airsoft guns with electronic inside, we have a characteristic trigger with a very short pull

I have a first travel here, then a very weak wall, if I pull just a slight bit more it shots

The trigger reset is almost no existent, releasing the trigger for like half a milimeter is enough

You have to like this kind of trigger, it's really not realistic since you have no mechanical feeling whatsoever

It does allow you to shoot fast though, which I guess is what most airsoft players want

For now I can see that the magazine is a bit hard to engage inside the gun

If I try to put it like this, the mechanism doesn't look, I have to hit the bottom of the mag to fully lock it

It might come from the fact that it's brand new, maybe it will get better with time

But for now I'll have to be careful to fully lock the mag

Let's take a look at the gun from a closer point of view

Then again the body is made of plastic

Like it or not, but it allows the gun to be quite light (2 kg), and since it's also very short, it makes the gun really easy to handle around

Note the markings

M-LOK hand guard

Folding front sight

You can see it's adjustable

Folding rear sight, adjustable as well

The flash hider, which isn't supposed to be an actual flash hider I guess

Can I unscrew it... Yes

It's a 14 mm CCW thread

Right side of the gun

Hop up wheel adjustment, I can see that it's not the hame hop up unit on the CM16

Here it's a model with a ring all around the hop up

The fake bolt doesn't stay locked to the rear (the bolt catch doesn't do anything at all)

I don't mind since I like to play around with the charging handle, I prefer when it doesn't lock

Overall I do think it looks really nice, and it's very easy to handle around

Here it is I guess, I said everything I had to say about this G&G ARP9

Thanks you for watching the video, see you next time for the shooting video !

The Transdisciplinary Approach - Duration: 3:51.

We need to work together to solve both problems of the world

right now.

All of them, and climate change is a global problem.

I am from Uruguay.

Canada.

Brazil.

Guatamala.

Michigan, USA.

Ecuador.

Bogota, Colombia.

Jamaica.

Cuba.

Dominican Republic. I was born in Santo Domingo.

The problems humanity is facing,

from climate change to natural disaster,

have many, many dimensions.

And so the problems are requiring us to work together

to provide solutions.

We believe that doing transdisciplinary research

gives us the ability to solve those problems.

So how do we do transdisciplinary work?

The first thing is we sit on the same table.

Scientists and non-scientists.

So we frame the question together, we frame the problem together,

and we communicate the results together.

And in order to do that,

it has to be communicated in a language that will be

understood by all,

and

it needs to have a communication strategy

that makes sure that we are not just sharing information,

but that we are actually applying the information

to develop the solutions we need.

So you need a lot of different disciplines

and a lot of different stakeholders to really answer that problem.

Thats why we need interdisciplinary teams and transdisciplinary teams.

We had the opportunity to learn from local experiences

from other countries to recognize what we have in common

whether our difference,

and how we can benefit to address the issue in a regimented scale.

Whenever you study a complex system,

human being, being part of it, you have to realize that different groups of human beings

will have different values, different culture, different ideas,

and you have to try to take everything into account,

and that becomes very complex,

but it is important.

The world is now the way it is basically because

as more groups of people usually don't listen to a larger group of people

and so basically we need, as human beings,

we need to learn to listen to others, especially scientists.

We need to realize that not everybody thinks the same way we think

and so whenever we go out

to try to understand a complex situation

we need to further realize that we're going to have

different voices, we're gonna have different groups with different ideas,

and we have to listen to all of it to be able to get a better picture of what's happening.

What If Apple Was a Country? - Duration: 7:38.

The world's largest corporations presently create a significant amount of the global

GDP, with names such as Microsoft, Google, and McDonald's becoming part of a child's

vocabulary very early on, even if that child lives in a far-flung region of the world.

Facebook announced this year it has 2 billion users, which is quite a chunk of the 7.5 billion

folks currently residing on planet Earth.

In 2015 ForeignPolicy.com listed the top 25 corporations, with Walmart filling the number

one spot.

Its 2.2 million employees are more than the entire population of Slovenia.

Nestle, in ninth place on the list, has factories in 86 nations, but what's more incredible

is that Nestle goods are sold in every single country in the world.

'Ok' is the most universally recognized word, but Coca-Cola isn't far behind.

Today we're going to focus on just one country-sized corporation, in this episode of the Infographics

Show, If Apple was a country.

Don't forget to subscribe and click the bell button so that you can be part of our

Notification Squad.

Let's first see how it all began.

How did Apple move from an idea in someone's head to a household name?

If you've seen a number of movies and documentaries made about the company, you'll know it was

started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976.

As the story goes, Wozniac was the engineering ace and Jobs was a man of ideas with a brilliant

acumen for marketing those ideas.

The two tinkered with personal computers, sometimes spending huge amounts of money on

advertising that told the consumer that buying an Apple product was tantamount to escaping

the clutches of vapid consumerism.

Some people got rich early, especially investors, and then Jobs left the company.

It wasn't until Jobs came back in 1997 that Apple would begin chartering a course towards

gadget global supremacy.

You know the story from here, in which products such as the iPod, iMac, iPhone, as well as

the iOS operating system, would revolutionize the computer industry.

So now let's have a look at the behemoth that Apple has become.

Statistics for 2016 tell us that Apple currently employees around 116,000 people.

According to the United Nations Population Division, one country in the world has the

same population as Apple has employees, and that is the island nation of Kiribati in the

Central Pacific.

This paradise on Earth however is vastly underdeveloped, and has a current GDP of around 600 million

dollars.

That is a little less than Apple lost in 2016 after losing a patent infringement case.

Apple can afford a loss to a patent troll, with revenue for 2016 at 215 billion dollars.

This meant that annual profits for Apple that year were 45.7 billion dollars.

If Apple were a country and it decided to share its profits with every person in the

country, each person would receive a check for around 380,000 dollars.

If we compare Apple's 215 billion GDP to a country's GDP, according to the 2017 forecast

by the International Monetary Fund World Economic Outlook, Apple would be equal to the country

of Vietnam.

It would also be a bigger GDP than many developed nations, including Finland, New Zealand, Portugal,

and the Czech Republic.

Even Apple's actual profits of 45-plus billion is about the same as the projected 2017 GDP

of Macao, and much higher than many nations on Earth.

How does Apple make this incredible amount of money?

Let's have a look at a few statistics concerning Apple's worldly successes.

Firstly, over one billion people currently use an Apple device.

Apple's best-selling product is its iPhone, and in itself this device had sold more than

one billion units as of July 2016.

In the first quarter of 2017, Apple reported its sales of iPhones to be almost 52 million

units, the most phones a company had sold except for Samsung.

Perhaps it's amusing then, that the 52 million iPhones sold in just a few months is close

to the number of people living in the country of South Korea – the home of Samsung.

In all, Apple sold around 212 million iPhones in 2016.

The Mac was selling anywhere from 4 to 5.4 million units a quarter in that same year.

As of April 2017, there were around 100 million active Mac users.

What does all this mean in terms of Apple's current worth?

It means a price tag of about 800 billion dollars.

It also means Apple has savings of around 250 billion dollars, most of which is held

in banks outside of the USA.

This is staggering for a company, but still nowhere near the number one global trading

company from yesteryear, which was the Dutch East India Company.

It's thought, in terms of dollars today, at its height the company would have been

worth 7 trillion dollars.

So, if Apple really was a country, how would it function?

To start with, there would be a huge wealth gap in that country.

The top Apple executives, which we could call the unelected leaders of the country, would

be taking the lion's share of wages.

In 2016, the base salary for top executives, or the vice presidents, was 2.7 million dollars,

but with awards and stock this meant those execs were paid almost 23 million dollars

each.

CEO Tim Cook was paid a salary of $8,370,000, which was 1.6 million less than he got in

2015.

Apparently Cook missed his targets…

Let's call this group the leaders and the top ministers in this decidedly undemocratic

nation.

Down the ladder are senior managers, with a senior director, according to Glassdoor,

earning a wage of around 280,000 dollars a year.

A Senior Product Marketing Manager will be paid around 180,000, an experienced software

engineer about 170,000, and an Information Systems Manager around 160,000.

If we remember, we are a country of around 116,000 people.

What are all the little guys being paid?

Apple Family Room specialists working in the USA are paid around 15 dollars an hour, but

they will also receive bonuses.

An inventory specialist will receive about 32,000 a year and a nurse at Apple will get

something close to 16 dollars an hour.

But these are US wages, and many of Apple's manufacturing plants are based in China.

We must state though, that most of these employees are not actually employed by Apple, but Chinese

manufacturing firms that make Apple products.

Apple indirectly employees millions of people, and we can't ignore that these people are

contributing to this very rich, small country.

Some of these factories making Apple products were once made infamous after reports surfaced

regarding them installing suicide nets so employees couldn't jump to their death.

Apple's fortunes, unfortunately, don't trickle down too heavily on the net-protected

Chinese workers.

According to a 2015 China Labor Watch report, employees at Foxconn and Pegatron factories

didn't have it easy.

70 percent of people interviewed in the report worked 60-72 hours a week and were paid less

than 2 dollars an hour.

They worked mandatory overtime, weren't paid for meetings, and due to such small wages,

many of them lived in cramped dorms close to the factory.

One undercover worker said he was asked to work 18 days in a row and sometimes 16 hours

a day.

He told the BBC, "I was unable to sleep at night because of the stress."

With this in mind, we can see why the iPhone makes so much money.

To put the unit together doesn't cost very much.

According to reports, the total cost to make a 32GB iPhone 7 is $219.80 for the actual

phone, and only another 5 dollars in labor.

A base model iPhone 7 will cost around $649, so this gives Apple a profit of $424 on each

of the many millions sold.

All kinds of costs and overhead will eat up that profit, but the iPhone is still a massive

generator of income.

According to an IHS Markit report, Apple makes around 250 dollars in profit for every iPhone

7 sold.

Bearing this in mind, if Apple was a country it would reflect most countries which have

an aggrieved group of people calling for more economic equality and better working conditions.

Apple is doing what any business does, and maximizes profits.

Countries have labor watchdogs, economic philosophers, social activists, etc, and Apple has corporate

and supplier responsibility guidelines.

In 2017 Apple reported that its suppliers now comply with a 60-hour maximum workweek,

and Apple said it also made sure 11.4 million workers outside the U.S. were trained about

their labor rights.

The question is, would you like to live in Apple the country?

Women Who Didn't Love Wonder Woman Support Group - Duration: 3:48.

(falling sound)

(chattering) - Okay, everybody, um.

Excuse me, sorry.

Just a quick reminder before we begin, um,

this is a safe space.

And even though we may be one of the most

despised members of society,

it's here that we support each other.

So, having said that,

welcome...

to the support group for women

who didn't love the movie Wonder Woman.

Who would like to start us off?

- Hi, my name is Rachel,

and I didn't love Wonder Woman.

- [Others] Hi, Rachel.

- I mean, I thought it was okay, but

like it definitely wasn't great.

- No, I know.

- So, I posted that I didn't think it lived up

to the hype.

And then the next morning,

all my friends had turned against me.

I was being labeled anti-woman, which is insane,

because I volunteer at a women's shelter.

- Good for you. - Mmm.

- And I work at Pl--

sorry, um,

I worked at Planned Parenthood.

My supervisor fired me

when she saw that I posted about Wonder Woman.

- What? (whispering)

- Fired me right in the comments section.

Her comment got 117 likes.

- It's okay, it's alright. - It's like so many.

- I know, so many. - Wait, she could-a just--

- I saw Wonder Woman for the second time this weekend,

because I thought maybe the first time I was just

not in the mood.

I like movies that empower women.

I thought Hidden Figures was great.

- Oh! - So good.

- Octavia Spencer was a treasure.

- So good. - But,

Wonder Woman has a lot of problems.

How is an island full of only hot chicks

considered feminist? - Yes.

- Why is she always walking like a runway model?

- Yes.

- And I am sorry, but her blind confidence is just naïve.

(chattering) - You can't be confident

for no reason!

- Yes! - Oh, thank you!

- And it was too long.

Two hours and 20 minutes, I ain't got time for that shit.

- Exactly. - Yes.

- Why is she running around in wedged heels?

We all know that wedged heels are just as unstable

and uncomfortable as regular high heels.

- That's what I'm saying! - Yes!

- Running around in wedged heels, I mean it's impressive,

but it's stupid.

- Tonya,

you've been awfully quiet,

is everything okay?

- Um.

Last night, I lied

and said I loved Wonder Woman.

- Oh my God. - No, it's okay.

Continue.

- I was at a bachelorette party, and you know,

they wanted to go watch it, and I pretended like

I haven't yet, you know?

And when we got out, they were just raving and gushing

about how it's such a big step for women.

And, at first, you know, I stayed quiet.

But then, Laura, who's the shit-stirrer of the whole group,

looked at me and was like,

"Well, didn't ya love it, didn't ya love it, Tonya?

"Wasn't it better than Moonlight?"

I was cornered!

I had no choice, so I blurted out, "I loved it!"

We're just expected to love it,

because it's the first female super hero movie

that sees the protagonist not through a male gaze?

Fuck that shit!

(cheering)

(screaming)

(knocks) Ooh, I'm so scared,

it's a lass--

- I just wanted to say, I 100% agree.

It's really not a good movie

and definitely not an outright feminist triumph.

She's a scantily-dressed, gorgeous woman

who poses no threat,

nor challenges the gender norms in this country.

I'm with hers.

(slow clap)

- Thank you, sir, very brave.

- Right, yeah!

And how 'bout Glow?

That's an overrated show, too!

- Fuck you!

Glow is amazing.
