Hi I'm Sarah Ell from Boating New Zealand,
and we're here today to have a look at the
Axopar 28. This range of small power
boats are made in Finland, and while they
might look a little bit unusual ...
they've got some pretty cool features that I
think you're going to be interested to
hear about.
One of the things that's a
bit unusual about the Axopar is its
hull shape. It's got the blunt bow, and
then down here there are multiple
strakes. But what you can't see is that
the hull is actually stepped, there are
three steps going back; which means the
boat keeps a nice, flat, level attitude
when you're in displacement mode, when
you're starting to get onto the plane at
around 12 to 14 knots, and then when
you're fully planing it's up on the
third step. You're still going nice and
straight, there's no digging in at the
back, very smooth ride - very level.
The most striking thing about the
Axopar 28 is how fast it can go.
This thing does 50 knots flat out,
we did 43 knots on the day, and it cruises
comfortably in the low 30s. It's a very
flat smooth ride, there's no bouncing
about, the boat stays very level, it's
very comfortable for the passengers as
well. There's really good visibility
from the helm you can see all around,
and no water comes over the bow. You might
think this would be a wet boat with its
low freeboard, but it just cruises along
smoothly with no splashing.
It's got agile and precise handling,
turns really tightly - very smooth ride.
So up here on the bow there's heaps of
usable space. There's a really nice seating
area here, and this table folds down,
another squab here so there's a big lounging area.
One of the interesting things about
sitting here is it's not just good when
the boats at rest, while we're out on the
water we were able to sit here while we
were going 30 knots sitting perfectly level
just enjoying the ride. Also up at the
bow we have the anchor spirit, and the
anchor locker.
So one of the cool things
about this boat is that the internal
space has been used really cleverly.
You might wonder where they've managed to
fit in certain things ... wonder where the
head was? Let me show you ... tucked away
under here plenty of space - the head and the sink.
There's a good walk through
down the side on each side, and it's easy to
get into the cabin through this large
sliding door - there's one of those on each side.
Stepping in - here's the business end.
It's nice and cozy here in the cabin
on a bit of a chilly day, but when the
weather comes right - the whole roof just
opens up. So, the helm position here is
really elevated with great visibility
all round. It's got a racy motor vehicle
style steering wheel which is
interesting, because the whole interior
feels a little bit like you're an SUV
rather than inside a boat.
You've got your throttle controls to
hand, trim tab for the motor, there's
also this vessel view monitoring system
which helps you monitor the performance
of the engine:
how much fuel you're using, how much you've got to go
those sorts of things.
Chartplotter here, there's also space
here for an iPad which you're going to
link into to your system as well for
navigation, and I just discovered this
button here here is the horn.
So inside there's some pretty useful
features for making the most of the
space as well.
These seats hinge right forward and you
can have a fridge and a cooker in here,
these seats also spin around for
a central table so four people can sit around.
These's nice big squads sitting
up high, really comfortable, when I was
talking about the SUV feeling for the
passengers to cruise along. But the
really cool thing is you might also be
saying - 'Where's the double berth?" well let me show you.
voila! The back seats fold up and here's
the double berth in under the aft deck,
both sets can be removed for plenty of
access, and it's light coming in from
above through a hatch in the deck.
There's plenty of space out here on the aft deck as
well, room for lounging, moving around
fishing, this is an aftermarket product
that's been put on for the owner for his
fishing, and to put his barbecue on.
There's wet storage draining storage
here on each side as well. Plus down here
at the back is the business end.
This 300 horse Mercury four-stroke is one of the
options that you can have, it starts with a
250 goes up to a 350. It has a 260 litre fuel
tank so you can get where you need to go.
And for ease of getting on and off if
you've gone for a swim - the boarding ladder
folds down here from the transom.
The Axopar 28 doesn't look like your
average 28 foot powerboat, but that's not
a bad thing. It's got some really
interesting design features that give it
a really high performance and a smooth
ride, and it's got some really great
features in the interior that make the
most of that space I think it's
something that'd be quite comfortable to
go for a blast on.
