Being locked up behind bars can be pretty stressful and traumatizing.
Sometimes prisoners have to endure some pretty inhumane living conditions or they are housed
with some pretty violent inmates and sadistic and corrupt guards.
So, with that, let's take a look at the top 10 most brutal prisons that actually exist.
Getting arrested in at number 10 is La Sante Prison.
The living conditions of this prison are absolutely disgusting and inhumane.
Prisoners are forced to eat, sleep and live with filthy rats and lice.
The stronger prisoners often enslave the weaker ones and rape is a very common occurrence.
So due to the violence, unsanitary living conditions, overcrowding and lack of adequate
staffing, many prisoners become depressed and suicidal.
Back in 1999 124 prisoners committed suicide because they could no longer live in these
rough conditions.
And because the violence in the prison is so severe, prisoners are only out of their
cells for four hours a day.
Now in at number 9 we have San Juan de Lurigancho Prison in Peru.
This is probably the toughest prison in South America that houses 7,000 prisoners but only
has capacity for 2,500 inmates.
The prisoners are left to their own devices and are able to wander around the facility
often committing murders and other acts of violence.
There was even an incident of a Dutch prisoner who killed his girlfriend in the prison and
buried her under his cell.
There is just an extreme lack of control and overcrowding in this prison that forces inmates
to become violent and barbaric.
La Sabaneta Prison in Venezuela comes into this list in at number 8.
This prison has countless violent incidents because of the overcrowding issue.
One of the worst instances was the death of 108 prisoners as a result of a devastating
gun battle in 1994.
Unfortunately, extreme violence and brutality are a common occurrence at this jail and in
1995 alone, 196 prisoners were killed and 624 were wounded as a result of jail violence.
There is also a corruption problem so the inmates with more power and money have more
control and access to luxuries while the other inmates are suffering in poor living conditions.
Petak Island Prison in Russia comes in at number 7.
This place is often referred to as the Alcatraz of Russia because it holds Russia's most
dangerous criminals.
This prison enforces a mental torture of 22.5 hour long lockdowns in small cells and most
prisoners are only allowed just two visitors per year.
There are no washrooms or proper washing facilities and you basically spend your entire time there
locked up in a tiny cell, isolated from the world.
Things get even worse if an inmate doesn't follow the rules.
They are locked up into an even smaller, dark room for 15 days with a metal bucket and wooden
perch to sit on.
Abusing the system in at number 6, Rikers Island Prison.
This prison has undergone many investigations because of its history with abuse and violence.
During the 90's, beatings, stabbings and murders were a very common practice.
An 18-year-old inmate was beaten to death in 2008 which exposed an underground corrupt
system known as "The Program" where teenage inmates were used as enforces by the guards.
Fights were organized through the guards to control order and the teenagers were bribed
with privileges such as tv, cell phones and food.
Another inmate named Kalief Browder was held in solitary confinement for two years as a
teenager and it was determined that he was actually innocent.
Carandiru Penitentiary makes an appearance in at number 5.
This prison is infamously known for the tragedy that occurred in 1992 where a mass execution
of the inmates was done by the guards.
One hundred and eleven prisoners died that day, 102 of them were shot by the police while
the remaining 9 died from stab wounds that were inflicted by other prisoners.
Surviving inmates claimed that the police opened fire on inmates who have surrendered
or who were hiding in their cells.
Out of its 46 years in operation, there have been 1,300 deaths because this prison was
extremely violent and dangerous.
Moving into number 4 with Hoeryong concentration camp, North Korea.
This was a maximum-security prison that was completely isolated from the outside world.
There have been extreme human rights violations including routine torture, forced labor and
human medical experiments have also been done there.
The guards are told to treat the prisoners as slaves and to not treat them like human
beings.
Based on this, guards have killed prisoners simply because they didn't listen to their
orders.
And there are also many different types of tortures that are done at this prison.
For example, there is water torture where the prisoner must stand on his toes in a tank
filled with water to his nose for 24 hours.
Next up in at number 3, Gitarama Central Prison, Rwanda.
People refer to this prison as hell on Earth because of the terrible living conditions.
There are approximately 6,000 prisoners housed at this prison but the capacity is only 500.
All of the prisoners are squeezed and crammed into such a small space that they are forced
to stand up right for long periods at a time which causes their feet to rot.
It also doesn't help that they are constantly standing in feces which leads to gangrene.
Some prisoners even resorted to eating each other's flesh out of pure desperation.
Number 2 brings us to Tadmor Military Prison in Syria.
This horrific prison was known for its harsh living conditions, extensive human rights
abuse and executions.
Prisoners were subjected to horrendous torture methods such as being dragged to death while
others were killed with axes and cut into pieces.
The guards would torture inmates because they were bored and they chose their victims at
random.
One of the worst incidents that has occurred at this jail was in June 1980 when a commanding
officer ordered guards to kill every inmate in sight.
They killed an estimated 1000 prisoners in their cells.
Finally in at number 1 we have Diyarbakir Prison.
This place is known for implementing sadistic forms of mental and physical torture methods.
Some of the most common types of torture were burning prisoners with cigarettes, extraction
of nails and healthy teeth, sexual humiliation and assault, forcing prisoners to beat and
rape or urinate on each other, bathe in prison sewers, hang them by their arms for long periods
of time and deprive them of food and water.
So, because of these unlivable conditions and sexual abuse, inmates have resorted to
trying to commit suicide which even includes setting themselves on fire.
Oh and they also incarcerate children for life there.
Well there you guys have it
