Ok let's turn on the console
The custom splash screen loaded as expected
And the custom themes works as well
Do you want to know how I made and install it?
Just follow the tutorial
To use custom themes on your 3DS, you should install Anemone
If you followed my recent guide about installing custom firmware,
then you should have installed this app on your console
For those who haven't installed Anemone, you can install it easily using FBI
So run FBI and go to titleDB
Then search for Anemone
And press Install
Before running Anemone, you must set any default theme from the setting
or else you will get an error screen.
So go ahead, pick any theme you like and set it
Now you can run Anemone
I have installed several themes here. To install other themes, you can scan the QRCode
from the theme site.
Open the web browser on your computer and go to this link. You can find any other theme site from the link in the description.
For example, I chose this theme.
Bring your console in front of the monitor then press R to scan the QRCode
Then press L to confirm and it will begin downloading the theme.
Now choose your favorite splash screen and scan its QRCode
Now select the downloaded theme. You can press Y button to see the preview
and then press A to install it.
Now press the L button to browse the downloaded splash screen
Press Y to preview the selected splash screen and press A to install it
You might get that error notification. It is because you haven't set Luma3DS to show the
splash screen.
But don't worry, we will solve it right away.
Press A to continue then press Start to turn off the console
Now press and hold Select button while turning on the console
If done properly, it will take you to the Luma3DS configuration screen.
Use the Up button to select the Splash option then press A to select Before or After payloads to show the splash screen.
To be honest, I cannot see any differences between those two options.
But I chose to show the splash screen After payloads.
Then press Start to reboot the console
Now you can see the splash screen while the console boots
And you can the the selected theme shown on the home screen
At this stage, you have completed the first part of the tutorial.
To create your very own splash screen, you will need at least two images, one icon and one preview image
For the top splash screen, prepare a 400 pixels x 240 pixels image
For the bottom splash screen, prepare a 320 x 240 pixels image
Save the top and bottom splash screen as JPG or PNG
Next, we will prepare a preview image. Combine the top and bottom splash screen into an image.
This image should be 400 x 480 pixels
You should save this image as PNG format
Next image will represent the splash screen icon.
Create a 48 x 48 pixels image and save it as PNG format
Now we will convert the top and bottom splash screen as binary format
Open this URL from the web browser
Press Choose File and pick the top splash screen
Then press Load button and download the binary file
You must rename the downloaded binary file as splash.bin
Remember, this should be the top splash screen
Now choose the bottom splash screen. Load it and download the binary file
Rename the binary file as splashbottom.bin. This is for the bottom splash screen.
Now we will need to create an info for that splash screen.
Head over to this URL from your browser
Click the blank image and choose the icon for your splash screen
Fill in the form then press the save SMDH button
Rename the downloaded smdh file into info.smdh
Now you have all the required files to make a splash screen archive
Select all files and put them into a zip archive. I use Winrar to do that.
You can install the splash screen using Anemone later
Now I will show you how to make a custom theme.
This is much harder than creating a splash screen.
Let's get started
Extract the download file anywhere on your computer.
Open the folder
I have supplied some tools, templates and examples for you to learn about this custom theme and splashes.
Open the Tools folder
Extract all files into separate folders
Enter the 3DS Theme Editor folder
Run the Theme Editor executable file
This is Usagi 3DS Theme Editor
You should prepare several images to make a good theme. Let's open the Image tab.
For the Top image, you can choose between two different types of resolution.
Choose a wider resolution to make the image scrolled on the home screen, or choose
the standard resolution to make the image fixed at its position.
This is an example for scroll type top image
Create a 1024 x 256 pixels image
Then create the content of the image which is 1008 x 240 pixels and put it on the top left of the canvas
So you will see a blank space on its sides
Save this image as JPG or PNG
This is an example for static type top image
Create a 512 x 256 pixels image
Create the content of the image which is 412 x 240 pixels
and put it on the top left of the canvas
Again, ignore the blank space at its sides
There are three resolution to choose for the bottom image.
The first one is the scroll type image. The second one is the animated type image
and the third one is the static type image.
The bottom scroll type image has the same resolution as the top scroll image
It is a 1024 x 256 pixels canvas with a 1008 x 240 pixels image content
If you want to animate the bottom screen, then create a same size canvas as the bottom scroll image
Additionally, you need to create three same size images that is placed next to each other
Each part of the image is 320 x 240 pixels
If you want to have a static type of bottom image, then do this.
Create a 512 x 256 pixels canvas
Then create a 320 x 240 pixels content image
Save all the top and bottom images as JPG or PNG
Now you have created all the top and bottom image with its alternatives. Let's move to the next step
The File image represents the border of the icon that is shown on the home screen.
There are two types of File image, one for Large icons and the other one for Small icons
Let me show you an example of File image
This is how the custom theme looks on the Usagi 3DS Theme Editor
Notice the turquoise border around this icon
It is generated from this Large file image
This is the example of the large File image
The image size is 64 x 128 pixels
I made a slight turquoise gradient for the icon border.
This goes the same for the small File image
The small File image size is 32 x 64 pixels
And the layout is slightly similar to the large File image
I have supplied all the template for you to start creating your image design
So open the template and use it
We will move on to the next item, the Folder icons
There are two types of Folder icons. The Closed and the Open Folder icon
This is an example of the Closed Folder icon
And this is the Open Folder icon
Both Opened and Close Folder icon size is 128 x 64 pixels
Use the template file to create your own design
Next step is the Icon image
There are two types of icon size but you only need to create the large one.
Create a 48 x 48 pixels image for the icon
This is an example of my theme icon. I am sure you can do better than this one.
You have now completed the image part of the theme. Let's move on to the next part.
The Audio part
Click the Experimental tab and choose the CWAV Manager
You can add a total of eight sound effects into a theme. But the total audio length is limited to
about 187 kbytes only.
You can use google to find some free sound effects for your theme
But I have supplied some wave files for you to use it
Just remember, you need to download only the .wav file format for the audio part
I assumed You have downloaded the wave files for your theme
If you haven't downloaded any wave files, then Open the 3DS Theme Package and open the SFX folder
There are 5 wave files there. You need to select all files and copy it.
Then go back to the Tools folder and open the Wave converter folder.
Enter the ctr_Waveconverter folder inside it
Paste the wave files here
We need to convert the wav files to bcwav format
so it be read by the 3DS Theme Editor and console.
Double click the Convert batch file. It will automatically generate the bcwav files inside the bcwav folder.
So let's import those bcwav files one by one
Notice the file size limit down there. I only imported five files. If you want to import eight
bcwav files, then you need to use smaller files.
You can press the Play button to preview the sound files
Press OK if you have satisfied with it
Next we will setup the background music
It is best to find a music that loops indefinitely
Use Google to find for music loop
I have prepared a loop music example inside BG Music folder
The file is in mp3 format. We should convert this audio file to bcstm format so it can be recognized by the console
So open the Tools folder and enter the Looping Audio Converter folder
Run Looping Audio Converter app
Press Add and select the audio file
Select BCSTM as the output format
Then select Ask for all files for Non-looping files
And press the Start button
Tick the Loop option. This option will loop the music indefinitely. You can press Play button to preview the sound file
Press Okay to convert the file to bcstm format
Let's check the output folder
To make the sound file loops correctly, then the file size should not exceed 3.3MB.
The bcstm file is about 4 MB. So we need to revise it.
So reopen the original sound file
Then press the Start button
Now we need to make the file size as low as possible without losing the loop
Tick the loop option and play the sound file
Stop right there. We only need to loop that section indefinitely
Press the dot button
It will trim the music to the chosen length. Then try testing the loop
It is still not perfect. Try trimming it again until you find the perfect loop
Press Ok to convert it
Now the file size is drastically reduced
Now we have all the required files to start creating our custom theme.
Start by moving the background music to any theme folder of your choice
Then you have to rename that file to bgm.bcstm
We will create three different variants of the theme. The first one will be a scroll type.
I called it Variant A
Then start inserting the resource files
Insert the Top scroll image
Click Animate to show its preview
Then continue to insert the rest of the image files
Then setup its Flags or Settings and its Colors
I setup mine like this. Try experimenting with other settings
To make the Top and Bottom screen scrolls, then you will have to setup this tabs
Then enable the Background music and Sound Effects tabs
Recheck the CWAV Manager tab. Make sure you have inputted the sound effect files
Now you have to save the theme at least once to activate the Load BGM button
Now load the BGM file
Then you can try previewing the background music
You can see the Folder preview and Home button Pressed preview
And if you have satisfied with the current setup, you can save the theme.
Now open the theme folder
Select all files and pack it as Zip format
Now you have the first variant of the custom theme.
Let's move on to the next variant. The animated bottom screen type
Import the theme icon
Now import the bottom image
Then click the Flags tab
Select either page scroll or bounce scroll for Bottom Screen Frame Type
Then change the Theme info
And save the theme
Open the theme folder then select all the theme files and pack it as a Zip format
with a different name
Let's move on to the last theme variant - the static type of theme
Import the theme icon
Then import the static type Top and Bottom image
And then revise the theme information
And save the theme
Again, open the theme folder, select all the theme files and Zip it as a different name
Now you have to copy all the theme files and splash screen to the console's sd card.
Open the Themes folder on your console's sd card then drag all the custom theme files to this folder.
Then open the Splashes folder. Copy the splash screen zip file to the Splashes folder
on the console's sd card
Insert the sd card to the console
Open the Anemone 3DS Theme Manager
Press L to switch to Splashes
You can press Y button to preview the splash screen
Then press A to install it
Press L button to switch to Themes
Install those themes one by one. You will know the differences between them after rebooting
the console
Now the console loads the custom splash screen
The type A theme loaded perfectly
The top and bottom screen scrolls as you move the cursor towards the edge of the screen
And you can hear the background music and the sound effects too
Now let's try installing the variant B of the theme
Move the cursor and notice the color of the bottom screen.
Now let's try to install the last variant of the theme
Move the cursor. The top and bottom screen stays at its place
You have now completed the custom theme and splashes tutorial
