Today we will do something different and review an obscure game
Werewolf on NES
Of course the idea of starring werewolves in video games
is not familiar
But there are some games in my mind
Wolfchild
Altered Beast and Skyrim partly
and finally
Sonic Unleashed
That's right! Sonic Unleashed
and I reviewed this game in episode 25
Anyway
Let's take a look on Werewolf on NES
This game was released in 1990 exclusively on NES
It was developed by Data East
It was one of the strongest Japanese third-party companies
But unfortunately, it went out of business in 2003
In Japan, the game was published by Takara
Which changed later to Takara Tomy
but unfortunately it also went out of business in 2006
One of their last awesome titles
The Naruto series on Game Cube and Wii, Anyway
In Japan the game was called Super Werewolf Chronicles Warwolf
It was a weird name but both versions were the same and did not have much differences
This game was developed entirely by Data East
To be honest I like the front cover
Which shows the werewolf is getting out of the cartridge
By the way, There was a comic for this game
Which came along with it
But unfortunately, I don't have it currently
The completed version that included the comic is a little rare now
Before I start the review, there is something weird about the werewolf
I think you already have noticed it
Where are the hands? Where are the claws?
For first time in my life I see a werewolf with swords
How does he live??
Anyway, let's check out the game
The story takes place in the Red Earth
and it's another Earth planet that was created by humans
The evil scientist, Dr. Faryan appears
He is specialized in creating bio-monsters
This is not Resident Evil by the way
Anyway, the doctor almost conquers the planet
and he seizes most of its inhabitants
and the world is now living in despair
The only hope is Ken
The werewolf
Who's called also as the Warwolf
and his mission is to defeat Dr. Faryan and his minions
Anyway, at the beginning you will start in your human form
and an old man appears
Who is the spirit of Kinju as he describes himself
He's your guide in your adventure
and he appears in the beginning of every stage
To be honest he gives useful advice
After that you will face the stupidest mini ever
but hold on, the way how the main character walks
and stands is similar to Trevor Belmont from Castlevania 3
Anyway, this mini boss is not hard
You can shoot him from far
or punch him while crouching
After that you will get the red "W" letter
Then you will turn into a werewolf
and the transformation cutscene is awesome
After that you will play as the werewolf
You will notice that he has regular hands and when he hits they turn into swords
it seems he can switch between them whenever he wants
Okay that makes sense
Anyway, as you can see that this game is an action side scrolling game
The control is simple
"B" for jumping
"A" for the swords
That's right!
The controls here are reversed in comparison to other games
I don't know why
Anyway, if you press Up+B
You will perform a higher jump
If you press both buttons together
You will jump back
it protects you from any attack
if you hold "A"
The werewolf will perform a strong roar
But it drains a lot from your health
I don't recommend it most of the time
But if you are in your human form you can shoot a letter
Which is weird but at least you won't lose health
let me add that in your werewolf form you can climb the walls
and the pipes
These swords are not only for show
They are useful in other stuff
one of stuff you can get in the game are the hearts that increase your health
Hourglasses that increase the time limit
and the bubbles
When you get 5 bubbles you will turn into super werewolf
Your jump will be much higher, secondly you will be much faster
The red "W" letter makes you turn into a werewolf
The blue "W" turns you back to your human form
There no reason for going back to human form because it's much weaker
So I advise you to stay away from the blue "W"
The weird thing if you are in the human form
and take the blue "W", you will die
Anyway, try not to get hit as much as you can
because you will go back to your human form
Unless if you get the red "W" on your way
in any case, the gameplay is simple and it's not that complicated
it's like other action side scrolling games
The graphic is decent and the soundtrack is good
As for the enemies, they are various depending on the stage
but the stupidest ones are those soldiers
when they notice you, some letters appear on their heads
"oooohhhhh! there is a werewolf in a front of me"
they are not difficult anyway
But if they are on the opposite side they say
"Hoooooo"
Anyway, let's talk about the stages
At the same time we will mention the flaws that you face in the stages
As I said, there is a stupid mini boss at the beginning of every stage
The problem that he is repeated in every stage
and the developer didn't bother to put various mini bosses
In each stage he becomes faster and with longer health bar
The stupidest thing ever is that he...
mimicks Zidane!
The first stage is simple but when you reach the base of the boss
you will get lost a little
The level design is decent in the stage
when you use the ladders you can't get off them
You have to reach to top or the bottom
In other word, use them normally
In this section I am trying to reach this platform
But reaching it is not that easy
Secondly, there is a time limit and it's too shot for you if you are playing it for the first time
I've wasted a lot of time and died thanks to that!
Okay... I can't stand it honestly!
Hold on in a sec!
I don't care! I'll use the unlimited time code and continue the game!
What are these signs?
Aha! if I hit it something will pop up
Will something happen if I hit this statue?
Okay
Will something will pop up if I hit the edges?
Aha! It seems there are some spots in the stages that you can hit
It pops up the items
Such as the health hearts
, small bubbles
and the big one that makes you invisible for some moments
and finally the hourglass which increases your time a little
meaning I won't be worried about the time limit
No need for Game Genie
But still, I don't know why everything is so cryptic
Anyway, let me warn you about the hidden items
if they are hidden in sealed rooms
Start searching at the end of the room
and don't let an item pop up on your face when you leave
for example, I am trying to get out of this place
But I don't want to get the Blue "W" and turn into a human again
Anyway, let's go back to the stages
and the base section of the first stage
There are lightning traps that you can avoid
if you jumped back
But you have to jiggle yourself left and right in order to move the screen
when you perform the back jump the screen won't scroll
The first boss is not hard and you can beat him easily
When you beat a boss, he tells you the name of the next stage
and its boss provokes you
Wait
isn't that Juggernaut??
Here they call him Iron Head?!
Anyway
The first section of the stage there are two paths
The public road and sewage
but I recommend sewage path because it's much easier
Although sewage is a disgusting place
Anyway, you won't face any difficulty like I said
But at the last section of this area, The Iron Head will appear
and leave
And you will see the crowd in the background saying "Fight"
But wait! Wait! Wait!
Let's go back to the story
They said that Dr. Faryan
has seize most of the population
So what about these people then??
or are they bad guys?
If they are so
Why they don't wear like those
Anyway
The werewolf ignores them completely
and climbs a huge tower that is under construction
The section is not hard but beware of the lightning
avoiding it is easy in general
At the end of the stage there is something that you can hang on and moves you automatically
after that eeee....
You fall off and face Juggernaut
eeeee.. I mean Iron Head
Hold on..
Why did this werewolf bother to climb the tower?
in order to fall on the boss?
trying to mimic Spider Man?!
More importantly... The boss is not hard if you figure hm out
but I like the cutscene after you beat him
It reminds me of Shinobi 3
Anyway, the fourth stage is located as they described in the Madness Base
and the boss is Fireman
You will be inside the cave at the beginning and the section is not that hard
But if you climb up you will find yourself in the forest
and you will face some difficulties so you better stay in the bottom
The second section of the stage is like they described the "Madness Base"
and it's mad indeed!
because of annoying sound of the alarm
and what's even more annoying that this section is hard
I suggest you to mute the TV when you reach it
The boss of the stage is eeeee....
Human Torch?!!
What wrong with these blind rip offs?!! Wasn't it possible to have an original boss??
Anyway, The Fireman is not hard too
in case you figure him out of course
In any case, the fourth stage in Thick Forest
and the boss of the stage is "Monster"!
Wow! An original name honestly!
But wait! Who is this girl that he holds?
Is there a girl that you save in the game??
What about saving the world from Dr. Faryan, not saving a girl from a monster?!
Anyway, it's pretty known that the waterfall stages in video games are the worst
and the worst of all the one in Lion King
In this game the waterfall stage is so annoying
In this section you have to progress then walk back again repeatedly
in order to make this tree trunk appear in the right place
Other than that you will do well
About the boss who is Monster
He looks like a worm or larva
You will face him in his first form as you can see
His second form is eeeee....
As I know the larva turns into butterfly
Not into a flying monster with huge belly and feathers
We want an original boss but not original like this!
Anyway, if you figure him out as usual you will beat him
The bosses in general are not hard if you figure them out
but I noticed something weird after beating him
Where did the girl that he was holding go??
I think I know what's going on
It seems this girl is just from the public
and she's not related to the story in order to show how "cruel" the monster is
anyway, you will reach the final stage in Dr. Faryan base
At the beginning of the stage when the spirit of Kinju appears
He will congratulate you for your victories
and suddenly
He transforms and says that it's Dr. Faryan's doing
and can't control himself
then he apologises to you
After that you will fight him
But why does he have these moves??
It seems he has turned into a weremonkey
Anyway, in the Japanese version
He won't be controlled by the doctor
instead he suggests to you to conquer the world in Dr. Faryan's place
then you refuse and he fights you
hmmmm.. I rather prefer the story of North America version
because the idea of betrayal at the very end is overused
more importantly, the final stage is hard
and you have to focus
When you reach to Dr. Faryan
He will drink a drug that turns him to a werewolf too
unfortunately he's too easy
each time you hit him he jumps above you
anyway after you beat him you will hear a conclusion music
Then, he turns into eeee.....
Magneto??!!
Hold on!
First of all Dr. Faryan
Then he turns into a werewolf
Then he turns into Magneto?!
The messed up and ripped off the game and there is not even an original boss
anyway, this boss has some challenge unlike the others
and it's a matter of time to defeat him
Then you will beat the game
The werewolf saves the Red Earth
and rises the United States flag
To be fair, werewolf is not a bad game at all
It's true that it has some weird ideas and rip offs
But at least it's playable
If you like the dark-themed games, this one is for you
This is Werewolf on NES
it's a decent game and it's not that bad
How about in the next episode we review eeeee...
We haven't reviewed a console in a while. How about we review one next episode?
See you in the next episode
