Hi guys, I've got my October wrap up and November TBR today and despite the fact
that I watched a lot of TV this month and also found myself binge watching
every single 'X-Men' movie ever made because I decided I needed to watch them
because I'd never watched them before. I still did manage to read a couple of
things that I really enjoyed this month. So I'm just going to get straight on into
the books that I read during October. I'm going to do this a little bit back to front
and start with the books that I read last. Just because I literally just
finished them and that is Volumes: 1 & 2 of 'Nailbiter' by Joshua Williamson and
Mike Henderson. And these is the first two volumes in a graphic novel series about
a town in which 16 of the country's most notorious and gruesome serial killers
were born and bred. And it basically follows an FBI agent that goes to this
town to find his friend, who also happens to be an FBI agent, as he has been
fascinated by this town and wants to know why all of these serial killers are
coming from this specific town in the US. But when he arrives at the town to meet
his friend, he realises that he has gone missing. So this basically follows him
trying to work out what has happened to this other FBI agent, whilst also trying
to figure out what's going on because a whole lot of murders have been happening.
This was a unique reading experience. It was so incredibly gruesome.
So, so messed up and just icky. It was just icky and the entire time
that I was reading Volume: 1, I was thinking yeah I should stop reading this. I should just
stop. I'm not going to read this and why am I reading this. What am I doing.
I finished it and went, you know what, yeah I'm not gonna read the second book and
then picked up the second volume almost instantly and then I got to the end of
this and I was like, you know what, nah. I'm not gonna continue with this series.
It is just far too messed up for me and yet I know that there is no way that I'm
not going to be able to continue with this series because although it is so, so
messed up and so gruesome and very, very graphic and violent. It is also
incredibly addictive and I can't read two volumes of this and then not know
what is going on because I still don't know what is going on. The only other
time that I've read something that I felt this way about was 'You' by Caroline Kepnes.
In which the whole time I was reading it, I was just thinking why am I
reading this. I'm not really enjoying it and yet I can't
stop reading and that is how I felt with these and I gave this one a 3.75 out
of 5 stars and I gave this one a 3.5. Just because a couple of characters and plot
lines came up in it and then they didn't seem to have any point. So I'm hoping
that in the third volume, when I get around to reading it because I've
resigned to the fact that I am going to be reading it. I'm hoping that there is a
bit more context to it, as this one did feel a little bit disjointed.
It's interesting. I don't really know how to describe it because enjoyable is
definitely the wrong word because it was so messed up and so gruesome and so
graphic and violent and horrible. Yet at the same time, I couldn't stop reading
and it was very addictive and I just want to know what is going on.
I'll go back to the beginning of the month now and the first book I read in October was
'The Hate U Give' by Angie Thomas and this was inspired by the black lives
matter movement and basically follows the main character Star, during the
aftermath of her being the sole witness to her childhood best friend being shot
and murdered by the police. This has rightly so had so much praise
and hype since it's been released and honestly I'm not sure what I personally
can add to the conversation surrounding this because there are so many people
out there that are so much better equipped to talk about it than I am. So I
highly, highly recommend that you go and look for some own voices reviews for
this because they're going to be so much more insightful and so much better than
anything I could say about it to be completely honest. So I will leave some
of those in the description box below and also the Goodreads link to it, so
you can have a look at those. What I will say is that I thought this was
absolutely fantastic. It was so brilliantly written and so
impactful and insightful. I loved Angie Thomas's writing style and I fell in
love with every single character in this book. I have already told my Mum that she
absolutely has to read this and she's going to pick this up as soon as
possible and I just think no matter who you are, how old you are or where you're
from, you'll get so much out of this book. It is just such a brilliant book and so
brilliantly written and I cannot wait for the movie and I cannot wait to read
everything else that Angie Thomas releases because I have no doubt that they will
be just as fantastic. And I ended up giving this a 5 out of 5 stars.
After I finished 'The Hate U Give' I didn't really read anything for a
while because honestly, I just kind of wanted to soak it in but eventually I
did pick up 'Dark Matter' by Blake Crouch and this follows Jason Dessen after a
night out when he is knocked unconscious and when he finally comes to, he finds
himself in his world but a world that is totally different.
So his wife isn't his wife anymore, his son was never born and instead of
being a teacher, he is a world famous scientist. It's basically all about
alternate universes and about Jason trying to find his way back to his own
universe and to the universe he has always known. This was a very interesting read.
I was kept guessing the entire time. The whole time I was reading it I was
just thinking about all the possible alternate universes there are for me out
there and I somehow managed to persuade myself that somewhere out there, there is
a universe in which I am married to Alfred Enoch or there is an alternate
universe out there, where myself and Chris Evans own about 50 dogs and it was kind
of really fun to think about. But I think the reason that that's the way my brain
went is because this was very scientific and my brain isn't very scientific. So I
did struggle a little bit with that but overall I thought it was very, very
interesting and very different from anything I've read and I love reading
and thinking about the possibility of alternate universes and I ended up
giving this a 3.7 5 out of 5 stars, just because I did struggle with the science
side of things but that is totally my fault because that is not the way my
brain is built. The entire time I was reading this, I was thinking how
fantastic this would be as a movie and it turns out it is being made into a movie.
So I'm very, very excited about that. I then after saying that I've
wanted to for so long and having it in so many TBR's,
finally read 'Murder on the Orient Express' by Agatha Christie. And this is a
murder mystery, set on a train on which one of the passengers is murdered whilst
in a snow drift. And it follows Poirot, who is a French detective, trying to work out
what happened and trying to figure out who murdered this person and I
absolutely loved it. This was so much fun. It was structured
in three parts. The first being the facts, the second part being evidence and the
third being the conclusion and I loved that because it just meant that it was
incredibly easy to follow, very very easy to read and also you got to know each
individual character in-depth because each individual character was given an
in-depth chapter and an in-depth interview and kind of interrogation and
it was just the most fun to read. I absolutely loved it. Although I had a
theory from the beginning until the end of who the murderer was
and what happened, I was kept guessing and I was constantly questioning myself.
It turned out that I was right and guessed right but I didn't feel as though
I had spoiled myself by guessing it because I never knew whether I was right
or not, which was so much fun to read. I ended up giving this a 5 out of 5 stars
and I am so excited to watch the new movie adaptation because I think
that looks fantastic and from the trailer it seems as though it might be a
lot darker than the book. So I'm really interested to see how they're going to
compare and this was my first ever Agatha Christie book but it definitely
will not be my last. Next I read the first three volumes of 'Paper Girls', which
is a graphic novel series following four 12 year old paper girls, who essentially
encounter an alien invasion kind of thing on the morning after Halloween, whilst
on their paper round. There's time travel, space people, these weird flying dinosaur
things and a group of kick-ass girls and I absolutely loved it. I read the first
volume and instantly read the second volume because I couldn't not and then I
tried to not read the third volume straight away, totally failed at it and
read it straight away. And I am so upset with myself because I didn't realise
that the first three volumes were the only ones that were out and I now have
to wait until April to read the fourth volume but I am so excited for it.
I actually ended up reading all of these through twice, which is something I do
quite a lot with graphic novels and comics and both times I absolutely loved
it and I just thought it was funny, it was heartwarming, it was witty, it was
incredibly bizarre. Incredibly bizarre and all over the place. I loved all of
the characters, they were all very different. I have no idea really what's
going on. I think I'm kind of getting there but as I said, it is all over the place.
Very messy, very disjointed but in such a fantastic way. I loved the artwork
in it, the colours are gorgeous. I ended up giving these all a 4 to a 4.5 out of 5 stars
and I am so excited to continue with this series and I'm so frustrated
that I have to wait until April to do so. But I will say the reason I didn't give
it a higher rating than that, is just because there was some problematic
language in it and most of it was called out on the page but some of it wasn't
and it was just totally unnecessary. I did put some trigger warnings for it in
my Goodreads review, so I will leave that linked in the description box. But with
that being said, I did really, really enjoy this and I have absolutely no
doubt that I will be rereading this multiple times because as I said, I've
already read it twice and loved it both times and I cannot wait until April to
read the fourth volume. And the last book I read in October was
'Undercover Princess' by Connie Glynn and this follows Ellie who is a princess, who has only
ever wanted to be ordinary and anything but a princess and Lottie, who is
ordinary and all she has ever wanted to be is a princess and it follows them
after they become roommates at Rosewood Hall. I really, really enjoyed this.
This was so much fun, it was so cute. It was kind of like 'Harry Potter', meets
'Cinderella', meets 'The Princess Diaries', meets 'The Princess Protection Program'.
It was just so much fun. It almost felt like reading a Disney Channel original movie.
It was just the cutest and I loved the writing style in it. The way that
everything was described was very magical and really cute and just kind of
very British. Which I don't know whether that makes sense
but the way that it was written was so lovely. It was basically all about the
relationships and the secrets and the royalty and things like that and I
thoroughly enjoyed it. It did definitely kind of border the line of middle grade
and young adult but I am 110% going to be picking up the sequel to
this because the ending was fab and I have so many questions and also it was
just such an enjoyable read. And it's something that I know had I read it when
I was younger, I would have absolutely loved and I think because of that I
still loved it now because it was almost like a book that kind of reminded me of
why I always loved reading and why I started to love reading. It just had
this very nostalgic feel to it, which I enjoyed so much and I ended up giving it
a 4.5 out of 5 stars and I would definitely, definitely recommend this and
I'm really, really looking forward to continuing with this series whenever the
next book is out. And I have done a full review for this, so I will leave that
linked in the description box if you would like to know my more in-depth and
hopefully somewhat less rambling thoughts on it. For my November TBR, I'm
mostly just going to try and get through my Autumn TBR, which I made a video on a
couple of weeks ago, so I will leave that linked on the screen or in the
description box because I just want to get through those. But the main book from
that I want to get to is 'Alex and Eliza' by Melissa de la Cruz because I feel as
though I need some romance. I don't think any of the books I read last month
had a romance in them and considering that the tagline of this is 'the love
story that inspired Hamilton the musical', I'm assuming there is going to be a
romance in it. I also haven't read a historical fiction for absolutely
ages and I've been craving reading one of those as well. So this is definitely
on the top of my priority to get to but as I said, other than this I'm just going to
go with whatever I feel like reading when the time comes but I definitely
want to try and get through as many of the books on my Autumn TBR as I can.
TV wise in October, I watched a lot. I've continued watching 'How to get Away With Murder'
and started the new series of 'Jane the Virgin', which is making me so, so
happy because I love that show so much and I'm so glad that it is back. Season 2
of 'Stranger Things', started so of course I have definitely binge watched that. But
mostly I've just been watching 'The Good Place' because I've become completely
obsessed with it and absolutely love it. I love the fact that it is just over twenty
minutes long because I can get through them super quickly and it's a perfect
time frame to fit into different places during the day and I just think it is
brilliant and I love it. I also watched 'Thor: Ragnarok' this month, which was
absolutely brilliant and I am so very much in love with it. And I just think it
is the best 'Thor' movie that has happened and I just want the director to direct
absolutely every Marvel film from now on because I thought it was brilliant.
It was so refreshing and I loved it. So I'd definitely recommend that and in
November I'm just going to carry on watching what I'm watching at the moment.
And yeah, that is that. I hope you had the most fantastic October and I would
absolutely love to know what you've been reading and what you are hoping to read
in November and what you've been watching and things like that and if you
have any recommendations I would love to hear them. And as I said, I hope you had a
really fantastic month and I will leave the links to my Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr,
Goodreads, Blog and Snapchat in the description box below, so feel free to
follow me on any of those if you would like and I hope you have the most
brilliant start to November and I hope you're having a really, really lovely day.
Bye!
