Hi, I am SidiMohamed and this is Improve Your English, thanks for being with us.
As the title of this video suggests, today we are going to talk about computer programming
languages.
Now, you are probably saying to yourself as you are watching this video: what do computer
programming languages have to do with improving my English.
Well, you will have to wait to find out.
In today's episode we will talk about programming languages, their importance, and
what are some similarities between human languages and programming.
Coming Up!
I don't know about you, but I love programming.
If you are interested in, or studying computer science, you will enjoy this video from beginning
to end.
If you are not involved with computer science, you will equally enjoy it from beginning
to end.
Because it will be an opportunity for you to know more about programming languages and
improve your English in the process.
Just a quick disclaimer, in this video I won't go in depth as far as programming is concerned.
The purpose here is to introduce programming languages in a rather shallow way.
With that being said, let's try to answer the question: What is a computer
programming language?
Well, a programming language is nothing but a set of commands, instructions, and other
syntax used to create a software program.
In simple terms, you are trying to tell your computer, which happened to be really dumb
and stupid, because it only understands zeroes and ones what you want it to do.
The languages that we use to write code are called high-level languages.
My favorite is java.
But you have lots of other languages out there like C++, Python ... etc.
Now, let's see together what some of the world's best programmers and computer geeks have to
say about the beauty and importance of programming languages. Let's start with Steve Jobs who once said:
"everyone in this country [talking about the US but we can say everyone in the world] should
learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think."
Now here is what Mark Zuckerberg, the guy behind Facebook has to say: "just to think
that you can start something in your college dorm room and you can have a set of people
who haven't built a big company before come together and build something that a billion people
use as part of their daily lives is just crazy to think about.
Now, Drew, who created Dropbox; "to be able to actually come up with an idea and then
see it in your hands and then be able to press a button and have in millions of people hands.
I think we are the first generation in the world that's really ever had that kind of
experience.
It's exciting, isn't it?
Now, what do computer programming languages and human languages have in common?
Well, in my opinion I would say three things.
Number one, whether you are studying language like English or a programing language, at
first it will be intimidating.
In other words, everything will be complicated, very complicated in the beginning.
But as long as you keep working hard, things will start getting better and everything will
start to make sense to you.
Just remember that you don't need to be a genius to learn a programming language, just
as you don't need to be a genius to learn English.
It's all about hard work and giving it enough time.
The second common thing between programming languages and human languages is that they
are both self-taught, mostly self-taught.
What I mean by that is that you need to be an independent learner.
Don't just start taking classes and then go back home, sit down, and do nothing.
You have to be passionate about this.
You have to watch dozens of English videos on YouTube and dozens of java tutorials as
well.
Language mastery won't be handed over to you on a silver plate.
You have to work for it.
So go out there, download videos, download books, read them, and never ever stop practicing.
The last point: learning and mastering one of these languages can change your life to
the better.
It will help you for instance get a good job, but not only that.
It will help you grow intellectually as a person.
Thank you very much for watching this video.
I hope you enjoyed it.
If you haven't subscribed to my YouTube channel, make sure you do that.
And if you haven't done it yet, make sure you download your copy of my book English-On.
I would like to add that we finally have the English-On coffee mug out.
It's for the moment available here in Tunisia for those of you who are interested in it.
Thanks a lot once again, and I will see you next week.
