What if there would be no Higgs? - Duration: 11:04.
Ok, Johandri Barris is asking us:
If the Higgs boson explains the mass of particles
how is its interaction with familiar objects of different sizes, like a pencil or an armchair?
Well, as he explains, the Higgs boson explains the mass of fundamental particles,
the smallest components of matter.
So, to understand how the Higgs boson interacts with familiar objects, like an armchair or a pencil,
we must ask ourselves what are the fundamental particles
making up a pencil or an armchair.
For that, let me start with the structure of the atom
to see the elementary particles making up atoms.
Atoms, you know, are made up of protons and neutrons,
which are located inside the atomic nucleus,
with electrons moving around them.
These electrons are elementary particles,
and acquire their mass via their interaction with the Higgs field.
But this is a very small mass,
the interaction is feeble and the electron mass
is some 2000 times lighter than the proton mass.
So the mass of the atoms, the mass of the armchair or the mass of the pencil,
basically concentrates on the protons and neutrons composing the atomic nucleus.
Protons and neutrons are fairly similar particles,
the proton has positive electric charge, and the neutron has no electric charge, but otherwise they're very much alike
The neutron mass is slightly larger than the proton mass,
but just slightly, they differ in one part in a thousand.
To give you an idea of the amounts we are discussing,
in a kilogram of mass
there are 10^{27} proton masses.
Protons and neutrons, as opposed to electrons, are not elementary particles,
they have substructure, they are composite.
They are made up of particles known as quarks and gluons,
and the theory describing the behavior of these elementary particles,
quarks and gluons, is known as the strong interaction,
described by Quantum ChromoDynamics, QCD for short.
QCD is a close cousin of another theory we know very well,
electromagnetism.
To get some intuition about QCD,
quarks would be the analogues of electrons in electromagnetism,
and gluons would be analogous to the particles of light, the photons, in electromagnetism.
In nature there are six different kinds of quarks,
but to understand the structure of protons and neutrons,
it's enough to consider only two,
known as the up quark and the down quark.
The proton is composed of two "u" quarks and one "d" quark.
The neutron is instead made up of two "d" quarks and one "u" quark.
These quarks are hold together inside the proton by some "glue",
motivating the name "gluon"
for the particles gluing quarks together.
These particles are all inside this box which is the proton.
Ok, so to understand how the proton interacts with the Higgs field,
we have to check
the interaction of the Higgs field with the particles making up the proton,
the elementary particles composing the proton
The gluon has not direct interaction with the Higgs field,
the gluon is massless, it doesn't talk directly with the Higgs field.
The "u" and "d" quarks do have interaction with the Higgs field,
but it's very feeble, almost as feeble as that of the electron.
In fact, the masses of the up and down quarks...
well, they would add up to at most 1% of the total mass of the proton.
Let me consider a thought experiment,
in which we turn off
the interaction of the Higgs with the up and down quarks,
so that we take these quarks are not interacting with the Higgs field,
and are therefore massless.
We physicists can carry out these "experiments" in our computational clusters,
and if we carry out this "experiment" in which all particles making up the proton are massless,
and we compute the mass of this "fake proton",
we obtain that the mass is almost identical to the actual mass of a real proton.
More than 90% of the mass of a real proton
comes from this fake world in which particles have no interaction with the Higgs field and are massless.
So the armchair and the pencil interact with the Higgs field through their elementary particles,
but their mass, the mass of the armchair, has little to do
with the way the particles interact with the Higgs field.
So, where is the mass coming from?
To explain that, let me use an intuitive picure
that we physicists like very much,
although it's just a picture.
Let's think that the proton is an elastic bag
with all those particles inside.
These particles move freely inside the proton...
almost freely, because if they try to escape, the elastic bag stretches but pulls them back inside.
We say that they are confined to move inside this little bag which is the proton.
These objects moving there have energy
precisely because they are moving inside the proton, bouncing off the bag,...
and this energy, via a famous formula you all know,
which is Einstein's formula, is equivalent to a mass.
So the mass of the proton has nothing to do with the interaction with the Higgs field,
it's a mass coming exclusively, or almost exclusively,
from the energy of the confined particles moving inside the proton.
So the mass of the proton is essentially energy,
energy from the strong interactions,
of gluons and quarks with strong interactions inside the proton.
Ok, this answers the question of
how the armchair and the pencil interact with the Higgs field;
there's interaction through their elementary particles,
but their mass is not determined by this interaction.
Their mass has a different origin.
What I'd like to do next is to explain
howe this interaction is nevertheless very important
for the armchair to be as it is, the pencil to be as it is, and the universe to be as it is.
For that, I'm going to
use this tiny energy difference between the neutron and the proton.
I've told you that the neutron is slightly heavier than the proton.
This is due to the different composition of the neutron and proton in terms of quarks.
The proton has two up quarks and one down quark,
the neutrons has two down quarks and one up quark.
And we know that the interaction with the Higgs field is such that
the down quark mass is slightly larger than the up quark mass.
A consequence of this is that the neutron is slightly heavier than the proton.
What happens in this fake world I made up,
in which the up and down quark masses are taken to be zero?
In this fake world, the proton is slightly heavier than the neutron,
and that's because it has electric charge,
and the electromagnetic interactions increase its internal energy, its mass.
The fact that the proton is slightly heavier than the neutron
changes the world completely.
It in fact changes the structure of the hydrogen atom.
You know the hydrogen atom is composed
of a single proton in the middle, the nucleus,
and a single electron dancing around it.
These two objects are bound, forming the hydrogen atom,
due to the electromagnetic interaction between the two charged particles.
Now if the proton is heavier than the neutron, the proton is unstable.
Nature like to roll to states of minimum energy.
So the proton decays into a neutron,
and the neutron is neutral, as its name says, it has no electric charge,
and so cannot keep the electron in the hydrogen atom.
The electron flies off the atom, and hydrogen atoms just don't exist!
There are many consequences of the way elementary particles
interact with the Higgs field.
Another very interesting one is what happens with the electron.
I told you the electron acquires its mass from its interaction with the Higgs field.
If we turn off the interaction of the electron with the HIggs field,
and we make the electron massless,
the electron is a particle moving at the speed of light,
and atomic nuclei cannot keep them inside atoms,
and the consequence
is that atoms don't exist in Nature as we know them.
To conclude, regarding the question asked by Johandri,
armchair, and pencils, and ordinary matter,
interact with the Higgs field through their elementary particles.
This interaction is not responsible for the mass of armchairs,
but is is responsible for the armchair to be as it is, and in general for the universe to be as we know it.
If it weren't for the Higgs field, the world would be very different form how we know it.

You Are In Control Of Your Own Life - Study Motivation - Duration: 11:09.
can you see me right now all of you can you see me just point out where I am
use your hands and point out can you see me
are you got it wrong you know I am a mystic you're getting it completely
wrong now this light is falling upon me reflecting going through your lenses in
inverted image in your retina you know the whole story right where do you
see me right now within yourself where you hear me right now within yourself
where have you seen the whole world within yourself have you ever
experienced anything outside of yourself everything that ever happened to you
darkness and light happened with the new pain and pleasure happened within you
joy and misery happen within you have you ever experienced anything outside of
yourself No so what I am asking you is what happens within you who should
determine how it should happen what happens within you who should determine
how this should happen somebody else definitely you should determine what
should happen within this isn't it so if you determine what's happening within
this your whole experience of life will be determined by you nobody else but you
isn't it the events around you may not be determined by you but how your
experience of life is on this planet is 100% determined by you if you take
charge of this if you leave it loose just about anybody will determinate
they're not consciously they also like you by accident you'll find is that that
the better you are communicating your why people will want to work for you
regardless of the opportunity that you afford them like they want to be a part
of it yeah we do a little thing which we've been doing for years and years and
years called a give and take whenever there's any kind of relationship whether
it's a an outside partnership or even somebody who joins our team we do
something called a give-and-take where we want somebody to be selfish and
selfless within the relationship so not give and get but give and take so we'll
ask them what is it that you have to give to us that you have that you think
that we need right and they'll tell us and then we'll say great what is it that
you selfishly want from us and we want them to tell us what they
can get from us and I believe that so when when
when those things match you have a balanced relationship because so example
I've had it with people you know they'll tell me what they what they have to
offer and that's awesome because that's what I want and then they'll say what
they have what they want to take and they go oh I want to work with smart
people I'm like plenty of smart people what is it you want to take from me
they're like I want to help build something wonderful do that anywhere
what do you want to take selfishly from me that you can get nowhere else and if
they can't answer the question I won't engage in a relationship and the reason
is because in time the relationship is unbalanced they're gonna be giving but
they're not taking and I don't even know how to give them what they want then
they'll complain that I'm making enough money or that because it's not balanced
that's right I think ego and like people wanting to be the best people the Orson
Welles personality I think that's cool and really I I encourage like 25 year
olds to like inflate their egos as large as they can and compete with each other
because they're doing it for the audience the audience wins like that
that's the way it should be a bunch of like you know creatives
saying I'm the best no I'm the best and I'm better than you I'm better because
they're like gladiators and and there should be a stadium of people around
them winning every every time what makes your heart race right what things in
your life do you have that when you engage in that activity your heart rate
literally elevates and as I look back on my own life one of the very clear things
for me was social interaction I was a very shy
kid whenever I'd meet someone new that would kind of make me anxious but
particularly it was someone that I wanted to be my friend or if it was a
girl that I liked my heart rate would you shoot through the roof so reflect on
your own life what sort of things do you have and again start flipping you can
write scary movie skydiving whatever it is but start to go down that list and
make a list of things that actually genuinely excite you and you know it
because your body is responding and the whole point of this exercise is to tease
out the things in your life that you care about but you might be hiding from
yourself because a very very common phenomena in today's world is that we
have these things that are core to our identity in my case it was writing it
was social interaction but they were afraid to share with the rest of the
world because it is so important to us we're afraid to make it our profession
or even just a hobby right if you were to write about it on a blog in the
internet or engage with it in some other way
so go through this list right see if there are commonalities things that are
so important to you things that you legitimately care about that you can get
more involved in and the reason is not just for yourself because of course
that's going to improve your quality of life but when you meet other people you
need to bring an enthusiasm and an energy so that question what do you do
and right now if all you have going is a job that you're not super into and
friends that you know you like but you're not crazy about and hobbies that
you know football on Sundays that is not going to help you connect with the kind
of people that you want to have in your life when you're passionate about
something you will attract other people into their life into your life that have
similar passions and they're maybe in some cases have passions that are
completely divergent but the intensity of those passions attracts one another I
only want one thing for people that I have really outside of Health the only
thing I wish for people is them to love what they do as much as I do when I do
new podcasts or new video shows I love reading the comments of the audience
that don't know me inevitably 5% of the audience will leave a comment that
refers to drugs if they want to be really snarky they'll say I you know
cocaine ritalin you know they they think that I'm on something and I always reply
because I've never tried smoking a cigarette let alone done adderall I
reply with grat the answer so they'll say cocaine and I'll reply gratitude I'm
so grateful that I do what I love everyday and what I love for
clarification is just being an entrepreneur playing the challenge is
the risk the excitement but you also hi I'm tremendous energy because it builds
momentum when you're doing what you want to be doing for a long period of time
it builds momentum I do have the same energy in school I hated school I was
optimistic I was high-energy that's my DNA but not
like this this is now a supernova because now I'm
20 years into being in my zone the the breath of fresh air the
exhale I had on the first day that I worked at my dad's liquor store like
worked like there was no more school ever again
that was incredible how did it feel to like have that overnight success I mean
you went from you know people not necessarily knowing you name every day
to everyone loving you how did that feel well everybody knows that is never an
overnight success right you know as you know there's you've been doing it for a
while it's just now people need to get to you it's a bigger platform you're
right but a thing is the labour of being
focused you know I think I I think since I don't do I don't go outside an
experiment with alcohol and drugs and anything I stay really focused on the
goal you know I want to rehabilitate dogs
I want to train people I want to educate the world I want to transform and I
think that pays off you know I think that and also the fact that I surround
myself with people who believe in that concept you know who you surround
yourself you know who's your back is also going to influence your growth and
so I think a lot of the knowledge that I that I did I learned from dogs and apply
it to my business life and to my you know the way I am the way a parent in
every way they relate with people if some people have about energy I'd rather
not be around because if I can't they can't change I'm not gonna change them I
can change the dog yeah but I can't change the human unless the human is
willing to do it you know sir so you have to read all of that and feel it and
and just move on yeah right away you're right I'm trying to become a fashion and
beauty blogger and mert and earn money from it full time but I have some kind
of mental block and procrastination problem this is something that we see
over and over and over again and it's this idea that you don't ever start you
stay trapped in your head and if you feel paralyzed if you've been spinning
the same ideas over and over and over again then you know what I'm talking
about you see many of you are thinking way too fucking big you're attaching way
too much pressure on the things that your
interested in until you start blogging about fashion you won't even know if you
like it so thinking that you have a dream about doing it and thinking that
you have this grand plan that you're gonna do it full-time it is a complete
and utter waste of your time to be dreaming that big and let me tell you
why because oftentimes if you're the kind of person like Vicky that's getting
trapped up here the bigness of what you're thinking about is what's stopping
you what I want you to do if you're in Vicki's situation is I want you to stop
dreaming and I want you to just start doing small things I want you to go back
to curiosity and less into crushing your big goals the thing about life and
business and success is that you have to be willing to start and for people that
procrastinate starting is the hardest part for people that worry for people
that think too big starting is the hardest part folks that study
procrastination talk about the fact that the only way to beat procrastination is
to create what they call a starting ritual which is a way to push yourself
to get started because all the research shows that if
we can push you to get started on something you'll likely keep going the
first one that most people come to me is they don't have a clear vision of what
they want they want a better life they want to make more money they want to
have a better relationship but they're not clear and the greatest minds and the
greatest achievers are very specific and clear on their vision it's so certain to
them what it is they can see it they can feel it they can taste it and as an
athlete I used to visualize how one of the creates my sport I wanted to create
myself in sports and vision was very powerful for me back then as it is now
for business well so the first thing is vision that people need to get clear on
starting with vision and sports we always start each season with a clear
vision on the chalkboard in the locker room what are we looking to achieve this
season do we want to make the playoffs do we want to win the championship we're
always very clear it's written up on the board every day we walk in a law firm we
see our vision we know what we're working towards so for me I have a board
with my every day I look at it and I'm very
clear and specific about what it is when it's gonna happen each six months to a
year each season of my life so I just try to translate all that I learned as
an athlete because that's all I knew into life and it's helped me get to at
least where I'm at currently

DotA, Sherlock, airplanes. 10 random questions to ArtStyle - Duration: 3:13.
Hello everyone, Artstyle here, and today I'll be answering random questions!
If you were offered to remove 3 heroes out of Dota, who would you delete?
Techies,
Bristleback,
Aaand...
Clinkz. Actually, forget that, Clinkz must remain, not sure why.
Do you have a favorite TV series?
I have watched a lot of series, and Friends is my favorite - an older series.
As for something newer - something like How I Met Your Mother, and for the most recent - Sherlock, Fargo.
Which Virtus.pro match did you re-watch the most?
Probably the final against OG during The Kiev Major, and even more after it ended - we used to watch it a lot for quite a long time.
How much time do you need to teach someone to play Dota from scratch?
I don't know. A lot of people ask me that - but I didn't teach anyone yet.
The weirdest rumor about yourself you've ever found on the Internet?
Oh, that's not really a rumor, but the weirdest one was the time three orgs decided to boycott me, that was bizarre.
I was very confused when I woke up to that.
Some over-exaggerated stories about my relations with M5 were involved there on Dmitriy Smeliy's behalf,
Dmitriy Smeliy also invited Maksim Dyakonyuk, aka "XPEH" from ProDota, and they decided to "boycott" me together.
Have you ever missed a flight?
No, never.
What was the last thing you repaired by yourself?
Probably my PC. Yeah, definitely my PC.
What is your record on an uninterrupted Dota playing session?
About 30 hours.
How did you feel afterward?
Great. I was young and could afford to do that.
Would you be able to form a Dota 1 team right now?
No, in fact, I opened Dota 1 a couple of times recently, and the game is clearly much more difficult,
Dota 2 seriously cut down the difficulty.
What is the most daunting thing about Dota 1 for you right now?
Mostly inventory and merchants. The way character models move. Actually, everything is daunting.
If Dota 1 was re-introduced in place of Dota 2, would the pro players be able to handle it?
I don't think so, I think the majority wouldn't be able to.

Fiat Tipo 1.4 Hatchback - test i jazda próbna (ficzuring Złomnik) (ENG subs) - Duration: 14:16.
Avoid potholes, because front suspension is weak. OK...
Can I go through the puddle? Slowly.
You've been asking me for Fiat Tipo hatchback review, so I obliged.
Z.Łomnik called me (Polish Jalopnik :) - roughly translates into C.Lunker), and said he has a great Tipo to show. 1.4 like you all wanted, and....
Hi there! What's with this car?
It wasn't easy, but I dragged one from under ground. 5-door, base trim, 1.4, curburetor.
This is Polish car buyer's dream car.
Looking at sales data for last year it sure is. 8.5k units were sold.
This one really is from under ground. It came from Silesia (Poland's coal mining region).
There's still some coal dust on it.
This is why I'm dressed accordingly. I'm not afraid of coal dust, but I'm worried about what previous owners left inside. How many where there?
Who can say? 12, 15? It's got papers, it's ready to roll.
Any fungus?
No, nothing of the sort.
OK, let's go.
Here's the key: big one for the boot, small one for the ignition. Z.Łomnik himself is giving me the keys. This is a moment to remember.
Does it have choke? Yes, but it's warmed up already.
The last time I had to use choke was in a Fiat 126, there was a lever between the seats.
This car has seatbelts not just in the front, but also in the back. Yes, back in the day this was crazy. At the time you could get cars like Lada Samara without rear seatbelts.
And probably with one mirror, but this one has two, adjusted from the inside... Holly crap! Is that TPMS?
No, that's just a pictogram suggesting correct tire pressure.
Give it some gas! There you go!
This smells like a real car.
Smells of petrol, like any normal car.
Depends. Hyundai stinks of a Far Easter sweatshop, and KIA stinks like puke, but apparently the test car I got was used during some winter sports event, and that may have been the source of bad smell...
Phew, it's been a while since I've driven something without power steering...
Avoid potholes, because front suspension is weak. OK... Can I go through the puddle? Slowly.
Is first gear synchronised?
It used to be back in in 1994.
So this is one of the last original Tipos. I heard this car with a 2-litre engine was better than VW Golf.
Even this one is better than the Golf. It's more spacious, there's plenty of headroom, it's easy to get in, because the doors are long. It's not difficult to be better than Golf MK2. I've driven one recently, and I haven't fallen in love.
What happened? Where does Fiat take its brilliant ideas from? First there was the Ritmo, which was replaced by this Tipo. Then there was Bravo/Brava, then Stilo, then Bravo again, and now we're back to Tipo.
WTF? Everyone knows what the Golf is, but Fiat has to change the model name with every generation.
I have a feeling back then Tipo really competed against the Golf, and now it competes against Dacia Sandero.
Fiat made a conscious decision to drop down a segment, even though the model is well-recognised. I don't get it, but then I don't get most decisions Fiat has made in recent years. I bet even Sergio Marchionne doesn't understand everything.
Slight play on the steering wheel. No biggie, that's normal. Like in any car, there should be some.
I get it. As a young lad I drove my dad's Mazda 626, which didn't have the most precise steering. And then I got into my mom's Civic... what was it? The one with split hatch. Anyway, as soon as I started driving, bang! I hit a crub.
Too nervous this type of steering. Yes, it's very confusing. You drive a normal car all your life, and suddenly get into something sporty, and it's an accident waiting to happen.
Do I have the lights on? Yes, they turn on automatically with the ignition.
BTW, I'd like to point out to all you people hating on mini-spares, back in 1994 they had those too. Savings unfortunately. But the boot is bigger.
As far as I can tell this is at least 350 litres. That's better than the current Volvo V40. C'mon, you can't compare these two. Wht not? This is better :)
Look, a Tipo! Let's chase it. I'll take a photo.
Commercial break.
Do you know how people like to rev a car with cold engine? Here's my camera ready to roll, and here's a Lexus LC500h. Like HYBRID.
The engine is on. Let's take a seat. Sport+ mode is on.
I'm in parking, but let's give it some gas. OK, the engine is on, but this is it....
Let's put it in neutral, and that's all folks. Watch my Lexus LC500h review.
From the outside this new Tipo looks cool, but the interior is less nice. And the base 1.4 engine... Even I don't like it.
What's wrong with it? It doesn't go. It stalls. The shifts are so short, it's got like 3k revs at 80 km/h in fifth gear. And then it only gets louder.
I drove the 1.6 diesel, which nobody buys, because it's too expensive, and that was OK. You won't lave third gear around the city.
I see hazard lights switch is still on the steering column. Hand-breaker.
Up hill start. This is going to be difficult. Where are you going with this merc? Oaf!
FWD is not a merc.
When it's going, it's going. How exact is the speedo, because the arrow wobbles slightly? It's pretty exact, maybe the line is worn. I tested it with GPS, and it's more or less exact until about 60. Perhaps we shouldn't try more.
No, we won't try going faster. That said I did take my Fiat 126 up to about 140 km/h. My friend had a Yaris with a digital speedo, and he said I was going 140. And the speedo needle was just wobbling like this.
Must have been tuned well. I did have a curboretor guy, who could do wonders.
I have no clue what gear I'm in. Third.
Let's drive around Saska Kępa. OK, what much is this car? If someone wants to get a proper Tipo, what kind of money does he or she need to have?
Someone asked me recently. I said: "Good choice sir, because you're going to get one for 2 grand." "Two grand a month," he asked. "No. Two grand, and you drive off in a nice Tipo."
This one cost 2,200 pln (~500 euro, $650). It's got original 117k km on the clock. It's basic trim, but it's in good nick, rust is only in one place.
A miner must have kept it under a heap of coal. Clearly there was no rock burst, because it's OK underneath.
2 grand, and you drive away in a Tipo. That's a deal. It's a deal indeed. But what's wrong with it?
Curburetor is it's weak spot. I know curburetors are cool, when you have a car to drive on the weekends, but in a daily driver it's tedious. Some membrane went bust, and it idles at revs from as low as 500 all the way up to 2000. And then there are the electrics.
When you turn on the indiator you'll hear... But it sounds nice. Italians and electrics in the 1990s don't mix well. Italians should steer clear of anything electric.
They are much better with wine, pasta... Yes, wine, food, they're good at that. But also engines. All these Aurelio Lampredi engines are great, but god forbid Italians touch anything electric.
So maybe it's better it has a curboretor, than electronic injection. Injection was made by Bosch. Thank god it was German.
Damn, VW again. This review was brought to you by Skoda.
Watch out, red, red, red! There was a green arrow. Modulation on these brakes is not what I would call stellar.
Once they bite, they bite. Are these drums or discs? Discs in the front, drums in the back. They are hydraulically assisted....
I see... so this was assisted. That's why it stopped so abruptly. Exactly, you just feather the brakes, and the car stops dead in its tracks.
Heater is very effective. Gearbox is great, the throw is quite short for a car of this era.
I recall shorter throw in Jeep Cherokee XJ, but whatever you say.
I had long throw in Suzuki Carry... It's like Nordic walking. Just one handed.
Just without walking. I mean there was walking, when I had to push the car. So there was quite regular walking, when I think out it.
OK, Tipo hatchback. Can we recommend it? Sure, it's a great car for up to 2.500 pln, good anti-corrosion protection, the biggest problems are electrics... There's a spot of rust, but that's probably because of Warsaw.
Probably a bit of salt in the winter. If it was dealt with right after purchase there wouldn't be a problem. The rest is solid. The floor is in once piece. Not many 1990s Italian cars survived to this day, but Tipos still drive around.
Look, a Punto! First generation Punto corroded terribly on the floor. Not many have a floor, and this Tipo still does.
Here I would like to take this opportunity and thank Z.Łomnik for letting me test drive this Tipo for you.
And I would like to thank Classic Auto magazine for lending me their staff car.
BTW, Z.Łomnik has his new/old YouTube channel, so be sure to check it out, and subscribe. I know he doesn't want to beg, so I'll beg on his behalf, if you don't subscribe they're going to shut his channel down or something.
Demonetize! They'll demonetize the channel, and it will dall down in the search ranking.
We can't let this happen, because Z.Łomnik will not have any money to buy cars for 2.500 pln. And I made 23 cents already!
See you. Into fifth....
Sounds nice...

A Cleat Story - Tech Tuesday #99 - Duration: 3:21.
Hello, Calvin Jones here with Park Tool Company.
Today, want to relate a story.
I was at race recently, and a rider comes running into the pits.
Race mechanic tip 101: if a rider is running to the pits, you know there's a problem.
The shoe was on the bike, but inside the shoe, there was no foot.
So I'm thinking to myself - is teaching a rider how to put on a shoe part of being a mechanic?
Nope, it was practically the opposite.
The shoe would not let go of the pedal, so the rider let go of the shoe.
Turns out a cleat bolt fell out, and the other one was loose.
Race Mechanic Tip 102: if a screw fell out or came loose, you know it wasn't properly tight to begin with.
So of course their race start is coming up, and so of course the rider is dancing up and down,
dancing awkwardly because they only have one shoe.
We need to get this shoe of out the pedal quickly, get it fixed and get them to the race start.
Twisting the shoe isn't working and we can't get to the screws with the pedal in the way.
So let's think about how the Eggbeater works.
These two wires squeeze inward to hold the cleat.
Each wire forms an X.
We need to pull that apart to free the cleat.
And for opening things, what better tool than the MLP-1.2, used to close and open chain master links.
Opening the back side opens the shoe side.
Engage the MLP-1.2 on each wire and pull.
Get another screw, get it back into the cleat, and get them to the start line.
Race Mechanic tip 103: Even if our dancing rider here deserves a lecture on equipment maintenance,
save that blah blah blah for later. It won't do any good now.
And that's how we cracked the problem on the Eggbeater.
But what if your rider has a Shimano SPD?
Don't look to the MLP-1.2 to save the day.
Race Mechanic Tip 104: begin your problem solving by first figuring out how things work.
A procedure that worked on one issue may not work on another.
The SPD has one cage that pivots - the back one.
The front one is fixed.
Now that the shoe is on the other pedal, we need to open the rear cage to free the cleat.
Place a lever through the the bottom, find a place to engage that rear plate, and gently pull.
Like magic, it's out.
Your attention to basic mechanical principles and calm demeanor have saved the day again.
Get a screw into that cleat, get it tight, and todo es muy tranquilo -
all is calm in the pits.
Thanks for watching.

Best Mac Apps 2018: Top 9 Free MacOS Apps - Duration: 5:23.
Hey friends my name's Tasia and this video features my top 9 free apps for
Mac. If you're a Mac user and you're not using these apps yet I don't even know
what's wrong with you?Just kidding go ahead and hit that
subscribe button for more content just like this and come on let's get after it!
As to not discriminate against my favorite Mac apps I'm gonna run through
this top 9 list in alphabetical order. That means first up is amphetamine. no
not the drug the Mac app. Amphetamine lives in your menu bar and easily allows
you to temporarily override the Energy Saver settings on your Mac in order to
keep it awake. There's a lot of customization options too like keeping
your Mac awake when specific apps are running or setting a schedule or
activating it when connected to a certain Wi-Fi network. You can even keep
your drives awake and you can change the icon too. The customizations go on and on.
Amphetamine, the Mac app is really helpful when I'm cooking in the kitchen
and following a recipe and I don't want my Mac to go to sleep as quickly as it
normally would. Next up is appcleaner, all one word. As a Mac user you're
probably familiar with just dragging and dropping an app into the trash but that
doesn't necessarily delete the associated files.
That's where app cleaner comes in. All you have to do is open app cleaner and
then open your Applications folder and drag over the app you want to remove. Now
you'll see the app and its associated files and you just have to click the
Remove button. You can also tap the menu button in the top right to search
through your apps to find the one you want to remove. Third on the list is an
oldie but a goodie, Audacity, an Audio Editor and recorder. With audacity you
can edit multitrack projects and add in effects to your tracks. I use audacity a
lot to record and edit all kinds of voice over projects. It's a simple but powerful
tool great for podcasts, recording audio books, or any other v/o work you might be
doing. Next up is the chrome app. Guys if you're not using the chrome app as your
go-to browser I seriously need to know why. No really I do! Leave the reasoning
in the comments below. Chrome integrates perfectly with my
gmail accounts plus its visually more appealing. It sounds silly but it
saves me a lot of time since I'm able to see the icons of all the tabs I have
open, I can quickly navigate between pages. Coming in at number 5 on the list
is dr. cleaner not to be confused with mr. clean.
Now even though Mac's are pretty good at stating off viruses and spyware they can
still get bogged down with things like temporary files and logs. Just like
amphetamine, this app lives in your menu bar for easy access.
Dr. cleaner gives you a snapshot of your CPU usage, network usage, junk files and
memory usage. The app allows you to remove the junk with just a click,
helping to optimize your Mac. The next app on the list finds and removes
duplicate files on your Mac and wait for it,
the name is super original: duplicate file finder remover. Now I'll give credit
where credit is due, the name of this Mac app does exactly what it says,. It finds
duplicate files hiding on your Mac and allows you to remove them. All you have
to do is drag and drop a folder in the duplicate file finder remover window or
click the plus button to add folders and then have it scan for duplicates. From
there you can review and remove any or all duplicate files. The next app to make
the list is KeePassX spelt as one word. This is my go-to password manager. Though
not the prettiest app KeePassX is reliable and gets the job done. It's a
great password protected password manager. You can sort entries by group
and easily add new entries. KeePassX allows you to add a title, so the name of
the site you're saving, you can add the URL so you have quick access to the site,
you can add any necessary comments, and then of course you add your username and
your password. Ok next up is for all you emoji lovers out there. If you want to
use emojis all the time anywhere on your Mac without having to search that
annoying emoji finder then rocket is for you! With this menu bar app installed you
can easily access any emoji by just typing a colon and then the first letter
of what you want to find. It's like a slack style emoji picker for your Mac. So
if I'm writing a YouTube video script then I can write that the rocket app
rocks and then add the rocket emoji. Using the preferences you can set your
skin tone and themes too. Last but
certainly not least is the Shazam app and I know what you're thinking: lady the
Shazam app is a mobile app and you'd partially be right, but I'm not talking
about the Shazam mobile app. I'm talking about the Shazam app for Mac. The Shazam
app for Mac lives in your menu bar and does well the exact same thing that the
Shazam mobile app does. It'll automatically recognize music played on
your Mac, but cooler yet Shazam for Mac will recognize any music playing around
you too. How neat is that? If you don't want it
running all the time in the background you have the option to toggle it on or
off. So those are my 9 favorite free apps for
Mac, now I want to hear from you. Let me know in the comments below what your
favorite mac apps are and hey look what's this? Hit that button right there
to subscribe to my channel. As always thank you so much for watching. If you
like this video I want to know! Give it a like, a share, or leave a comment below!
See you next time.
