Waching daily Feb 14 2018

It's day five of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

I'm Kim Hye-sung with the latest on the games.

Let's take a look at some of the highlights so far.

One of the events that's been making headlines... women's ICE hockey... is underway.

It's the United Korean team's last match of the Olympics.

The joint team is playing against....Japan.

Neither team will be going to the finals as they both lost their Two other preliminary

round matches, but the game is drawing a lot of attention, with Korean fans hoping the

joint team can get a FIRST victory today.

There was Snowboarding this morning.

The United States won another gold medal in the halfpipe, just ONE day after 17-year-old

Chloe Kim took gold in women's halfpipe yesterday.

Shaun White, nicknamed...the 'flying tomato' for his flowing red hair, claimed gold in

men's halfpipe with a score of 97-point-75, becoming the first man ever to win THREE snowboarding

gold medals.

Japan and Australia took silver and bronze.

Last night, South Korea's Kim Min-seok also made history, becoming the first Asian speed

skater to win a medal in the men's 15-hundred meter event.

Kim finished with a time of one minute 44-point-93 seconds, less than one second behind Dutch

gold medalist ( )Kjeld Nuis.

Given that he is only 18 years old, we could be seeing more of Kim on the podium in the

near future.

Weather conditions in PyeongChang aren't really helping the skiiers.

The alpine skiing womens' slalom was scheduled for ten this morning, but has been postponed

to Friday due to high winds.

And yes, it's Valentine's Day, And a real life married couple, Chris and

Alexa Knierim, represented the U.S. in pairs figure skating Wednesday, adding some romance

to the Olympics.

Now, let's take a look at the medal tally so far.

As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, Germany tops the medal list.

The Netherlands is in second,... ALL four gold medals from speed skating.

The U.S. ranks third.

Austria with two golds from luge and alpine skiing, ranks 8th.

The host country, South Korea, is tenth with one gold and one bronze.

There are still more exciting events coming up.

The women's one-thousand meter speed skating event will take place in about an hour.

All eyes are on South Korea's Park Seung-hi, a former short track speed skater who won

two gold medals at the Sochi Olympics.

And the women's 15-kilometer biathlon is slated for 8 p.m.

That's all for our 6 p.m. newscast. and I'll leave you with the latest results

from today's events.

5 Misconceptions about the Vikings - Duration: 7:16.

Mr. Thorstein!

Hey WHAT?!

you are a viking, are you not?!

err... nop!

:D

I beg your pardon?!

uh... I pardon you...

what do you mean, you are not a viking?

I'm from Scotland hehehe

Oh yes! I go it!

that's a very interesting point actually, and I think I'm going to use that in this video

but I was going to tell you about those horns of yours

hey!

what of it?

did your wife gave you those? *cof cof*

WHAT?!

I- I mean... Vikings didn't have horns in their helmets...

I mean everybody knows that by now...

oh yes yes...

you keep telling me that

well, but there are other misconceptions and that's actually what I'm going to talk about today

let's do this

Hello friends my name is Arith Härger

and today I'm going to talk about five of the major misconceptions people have about the Vikings

well you might be wondering what is a Christmas tree doing in the background

in the middle of February

well this video was recorded in December - two months ago

isn't it weird that you are watching me as I was two months ago?

maybe I'm dead!

hello from beyond the grave!

enough of silliness let's get started

since the 19th century medieval Scandinavia has been portrayed in a particular manner

and mostly focused on the Viking period

a general idea of Scandinavian societies was built and this happens to a lot of historical accounts

exaggerations of reality, emphasizing a particular idea

and loads of fiction passed down from generation to generation

to the point it becomes an historical truth

so the first major misconception people have about the Vikings

is that they were a people

in the medieval sources the term "Viking" is related to maritime activities especially for piracy

after the 19th century and especially due to the influences of romanticism

the term became associated to all Scandinavian inhabitants that lived between the 8th and the 11th centuries

and the term started to generally be used amongst academics

and by the media

although this term can be used if you apply to a way of life guided by cultural practices during the Viking period

for instance

looting and exploitation

but applying this concept in ethnical terms is an error

you see, not every nordic was a Viking but every Viking was a Nordic

so you can use the term to refer to certain activities by the Norse

especially related to seafaring and raiding

but you can't a label a medieval Scandinavian person as a Viking

nor can you label a sort of structure as being Viking

the 2nd misconception is that the Vikings drank from skulls

this is a stereotype that you can still see in many movies, animations, literature

and the media does love to spread that

this misconception began in the Middle Ages

when Christian writers blended the references contained within mythological accounts and literature

and with the historical society of the Norse

I mean, the accounts from literally and mythical sources such as the Saga of the Volsungs

were transferred to reality as if in Nordic society people really behaved as it says in the myths

here on YouTube, for instance, I have seen videos saying that Vikings did drink from skulls

which is an historical fact

and even nowadays people still celebrate and drink by saying "Skål!"

and that this word is an old reminder which meant "skull"

"Skál" is Old Norse for Bowl, for Cup

and it has nothing to do with drinking from skulls

this was never proven by archaeology nor history

the 3rd misconception - the Nordics were tall, huge, monstrous, muscular creatures

this might seem totally silly but there is still this idea among many people

and it's still being spread a lot

a canonical image of the Norse was developed by some countries during the 19th century

one of the images created was the depiction of the Norse as being tall, brutal, murderous, violent

with a large body

and similar to ancient inhabitants of prehistory, or uncivilized savages

only wearing animal skins, and they themselves having an animal behavior

part of this stereotype has been transferred to modern fiction

various physical and behavioral exaggerations

due to the fact that the first historical records of the Vikings were written by their victims

Europe wasn't prepared to face this calamity

and most were caught with their pants down

the fear of Viking attacks became impossible to bear

and Christians who at some point lived in total peace before the Vikings came

portrayed the Vikings precisely as the monstrous disturbers of peace

and bringing with them the End of Days

poor Christians priests, all they wanted was to be left alone

the 4th misconception is that the medieval Scandinavian incursions arrived in South America

this is an historical mistake created during the 19th century

yes the 19th century was indeed a period of a lot of gibberish

anyway, this historical mistake that the Norse would have arrived in Central and South America

especially in the Brazilian coast and the Amazon

was an historical mistake that a lot of people, including academics still believe without questioning actual events

this theory does not currently have any historiographic and archaeological support

the 5th misconception and the last one-

every Viking was a pagan

much of the scandinavian societies during the Viking Age-

were composed by polytheistic religions before the introduction of Christianity

but the Vikings were no strangers to Christianity

and in fact they had had contact with other religious realities such as Islam and even Buddhism

people may not be aware of this but there were as many Christian Vikings as there were pagan Vikings

all depending on the century you look at

also there were a huge amount of Viking Age scandinavians who were both at once

that's the thing with polytheistic Norse

adding yet another God into the pantheon didn't hurt, it was just [beneficial] - (ups!)

for instance, Leif Eriksson, the discoverer of Vinland in the Icelandic sagas, was Christian

as well as Olaf Tryggvason a very famous mercenary and pirate before becoming a king

alright friends, thank you so much for watching

and I hope you have enjoyed this tiny video

and on the next one I will speak about five other misconceptions people have about Vikings

but turned to weaponry

well, once again I hope you have enjoyed this video, see you on the next one and...

tack för idag!

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13 2018 Review - Get The Pro Version Instead... - Duration: 23:37.

Xiaomi's Mi Notebook Air 13 gets another revision this is the second revision and

the third model now 2018 sees the introduction of the Kaby Lake R CPUs

in this line so we now have the Core i5 8250 you the I 78550 you eight gigabytes

of RAM and there is a 16 gigabyte model that's in the works that's apparently

coming out within a month or so or after the Chinese Spring Festival now this

model here you can see has another couple of changes to the obvious being

the fact that it's now in this deep gray color which is a good move if you ask me

because the paint job on the mean notebook Pro does look really good and

this here to me makes it look a little bit more professional I do like the

darker color on here versus the silver now it will show up fingerprints a

little more because of that darker color on the lid you see I'm a few little

smudges and things once you start handling it and using it for a few days

now the lid has no logos on it whatsoever so very plain minimalistic

design which I really do like the build quality is excellent this is really well

put together the fit and finish there's no rough edges or anything like that

the edges on the bottom could be perhaps a little less sharp than what they are

but they're not too bad overall and really no complaints with that now you

will notice there was another change to that's to the internals so we still have

the MX 150 GPU from Nvidia which is basically a 1030 it's got 2 gigabytes of

RAM double data rate 5 spec now this has 384 cuda cores in it now speaking of

thermals if we have a look you can see that we do have now these new cooling

fins on the two coolers there so we still have the same setup unfortunately

as the previous model so it's a smaller fan paired up with a larger fan they've

put more fins on those fans though so it's moving a lot more air through it

and and you can see also that the copper heat transfer pipe this is a little bit

wider now dermals have improved now when I reviewed the previous models they got

up to 50 degrees Celsius to the touch which I would classify as quite hot for

one of these notebooks and now gets up to about 46 so yes it has definitely

improved their cooling for to touch it it's not as hot as it

normally gets while in the previous models there but it also internally it

only maxes out at 82 degrees because of the improved cooling so there's handling

at two two more cause now compared to the previous models which are only dual

cause this of course is now quad so performance is up about thirty percent

but I'll get into that later on but just to let you know here at the start that

that Xiaomi has limited a little bit the potential of the CPU due to setting a

thermal throttling limit quite low to stop it going above 82 degrees so

there's some limitation there on the performance of this particular notebook

now the keyboard is the same layout the same key travel so one point two six

millimeters of key travel that I measured a comfortable keyboard to type

on it's not as good as the mean notebook pros keyboard however those keys are

just slightly higher quality it gives you a little bit better feedback on it

but overall a very decent keyboard now it is better than the previous year's

keyboard because they've used the black plastic meaning that you can actually

see the backlit keyboard better than the silver keys on the earlier versions and

they've also used a slightly better quality plastic on here and the keys

don't feel as sharp on the edges as they did on the previous two generations of

this particular model you also know that the power button is probably where the

Delete key should be but it does have a higher resistance to it so if you

accidentally tap that hopefully it won't pull it into sleep but of course you can

see it in Windows this button to do nothing when you touch it and that

solves that minor little issue there now the touchpad the same size but it's no

longer with some nap Tech's drivers like the first two models this is now Windows

precision drivers full control over gestures and overall it's a step up from

the trackpad from last year's quite accurate very good to use and the

fingerprint reader also works when you touch it using the touchpad so sometimes

on some models when you put your finger over the fingerprint readers it doesn't

register when you're moving the cursor around but this one here it does now

that fingerprint reader works flawlessly very

using Windows hello to log into Windows just to point out that the intake is

here for the fans so if you happen to use this on your lap you will end up

blocking that and then the fan noise will increase and it will start to heat

up so not a laptop to be using on your lap so on the right hand side we have a

status LED now this will light up red when charging turn green once it's fully

charged to let you know now charging time is blazing fast on this notebook it

only takes one hour and 38 minutes to fully charge this it's really good so it

charges at really high rates and probably the fastest in fact the fastest

I have tested out here on the channel now we have a USB type-c port here so

this support supports resolutions up to 4k 60 Hertz

we've got charging data at the same time as well with this port and then a USB 3

port there now on the left side here we have HDMI out now it is not HDMI to

speak which I feel it should be so this does not support 4k 60 Hertz it maxes

out at 4k 30 Hertz the output from this and then we have another USB 3 port by

the way the USB 3 ports will power external hard drives up to 2 terabytes

tested without any issues a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack which supports

microphones very clear audio out of this no static no interference so the screen

is a 13.3 inch IPS panel it's fully laminated with scratch resistant glass

blacks are deep colors look great no complaints with the screen I feel it is

fine the maximum brightness tops out at 291 Lux which isn't super bright but

it's perfectly fine for indoors even in brightly lit environments right now with

two powerful studio lights on the screen is set to 50% and you can make it out

perfectly fine normally I just run with about 30% most of the time in the studio

and at home without any problems now the screen to me looks better than they mean

up pro screen that's 15.6 inches and still 1080p and you can see the pixels

on that one here you can see the pixels if you look at it really really close

but it's not as bad as the pros now up the top you'll see

we've got a webcam now this is 720p 30 frames per second max so you can record

on it Skype calls look great you've got jewelry microphones that pick

up sound really well now this webcam is to point out does not support Windows

hello one thing to know that when you first get it depending on where you buy

it from that it should come with Windows 10 home in Chinese only now you cannot

just go and add an English language pack to that it doesn't seem to work the

easiest way that I found and it retains the recovery image and keeps that all

intact and the default software configuration and all that software from

Xiaomi is just to upgrade it from Windows 10 home to pro you can pick up

CD keys very cheap for that and this is what I did with my unis I upgraded and

that way if I go to reset this PC later on it will just actually add that

language so I added us and now that's part of the image and when you do the

recovery and everything like that it'll pull through so it's good for resale

value you can of course go ahead and just do a complete clean and new install

of Windows 10 home and the CD key and the BIOS that will pull through so you

don't need to spend any extra cash on that if that is your preference there so

having a look now just at what we have under the device manager so we've got

the Intel Core i5 8250 you now this is a quad core

processor it's multi-threaded so that's why it shows up in there

8 times wireless as Intel's dual-band wireless AC 80 to 65 a very good chipset

they're very fast that also handles our Bluetooth as well on that bluetooth 4.1

then we have a Samsung pn9 6-1 that's an nvme drive very fast I'll show you that

later on and the graphics so you can see true graphics here that's because we

have the integrated graphics that it uses when it's not doing anything

demanding and if you happen to be video editing or gaming or something like that

and then it'll switch over and use the g-force which is that MX 150 from Nvidia

and lastly here the fingerprint reader is an eland one that works perfectly

fine now if we look at the memory spec here we've got 8 gigabytes of doubled

right for RAM running in two thousand four hundred megahertz that is perfectly

fine but what isn't so great is this right here it's only running and

single-channel so we are missing out on some memory bandwidth and performance

they're still on the topic of performance here we have the Geekbench

for scores so this to me is not the best of course from this chipset and the

reason why that is is either two things it's either the early thermal throttling

that this CPU has that Charmy have configured it to do quite early on I'll

get onto that later on in this review or it's just the fact that it doesn't have

dual channel RAM so that's why it's a little bit lower because I've seen

before around 4000 for the single core score and about another thousand ports

is so high as well here on the multi-core score but still this score

right here that is up around thirty to thirty five percent over the previous

generation so it's quite a step up in terms of just raw CPU performance there

here is the OpenCL score now this score here I did run the GPU slightly

overclocked wood if you want more details on that check out my gaming

review of this particular laptop and we have a look at the fire strike 1.1 score

so this is the stock score here so two thousand six hundred and forty keep an

eye on that graphics school there so that's two thousand eight hundred ninety

nine because later on I went in overclocked and you can't boost that

screw up a little bit there you can see I'm taking a quick look at their

dedicated GPU so it has two gigabytes of dedicated double data rate five RAM

which is not a lot but considering it's only a 1080p display we're not going to

really run into many problems with the vram the amount we have on there unless

of course you decide to try and run 4k or 1440p which really I would not be

doing any way with this GPU because it's simply not powerful enough to really be

able to do that well with games and this of course it's a really old title you're

running it has a 384 tutor cause I'm taking a look at a few other benchmarks

that I ran you can compare these to my reviews of the previous generation model

if you'd like so here we have Cinebench now the score is up quite a bit this is

up around about almost 200 points on the CPU thanks to of course they're faster

see we've got on the air with two extra

cause it makes a big difference in multi-threaded benchmarks and here we

have the heaven school so this is a little bit lower than the mean notebook

pro mean notebook Pro and got seven thousand four hundred and seven so the

difference of this is because of those lower GPU clocks that I just mentioned

and showed you before without gpu-z they're passed Mike reading so 3702 is

not a bad rating at all considering that this is really an ultrabook how thin and

light that says it's got some decent powers it's packin a bit of performance

here too and here are the speeds of that samsung PM 961 SSD so 256 gigabytes it

is really blazing fast look at those read speeds so no bottlenecks whatsoever

here with the storage performance now this is the wireless here so I was

transferring some files over my own network at home wireless AC and it was

up to around about 75 megabytes per second which translates into 600

megabits per second so very fast the Intel wireless AC 80 to 65 chipset has

on here now not the fastest results have actually seen out of this chipset I've

seen almost as high as 700 megabits per second so it's only just marginally

slower there so just like their two previous models to this one we've got

down with firing speakers they are tuned by AKG and this no changes to them

whatsoever they're decent sounding speakers for an ultra balke laptop of

this size there's no sub so it's just the two speakers and it does also come

with Dolby audio software now the software is basically just like an

equalizer and lets you tweak and adjust the sound to your own personal

preference there I'll give you a sample of them now at 100% volume

on to battery life now so really no improvements here over the previous

generation as expected because we've got two more cause to feed and the other

thing is the battery capacity has not increased from the relatively small 39

what our battery because considering the hardware this has got on here it should

be larger this battery about of course they've made no changes internally to

cater for a larger battery size there now in my test I ran the brightness at

30% I had wireless on the whole time I was using Chrome with about 8 tabs and

you can see here that I after four hours and 38 minutes

lost about 65 percent battery there so you're looking like the estimate here

around 6 hours 6 hours 30 minutes if you are using the dedicated GPU your gaming

or doing something else you can only expect around 2 hours two and a half

hours a better life when you're doing something super demanding a hundred

percent brightness if you're watching videos it's different so if you were

just cycling and watching a video in 1080p then you can probably expect about

seven to eight hours it's a lot more there but overall battery life is for me

disappointing moving on now to have a look at encoding 4k video so I have a

DOE Premiere Pro here and as long as you don't have a huge amount of different

videos in here like you're not trying to put 100 clips and here with the 8

gigabytes of RAM I found that editing 4k video is perfectly fine with this

hardware that the preview screen here you can see that's in real time it

doesn't have any slowdown you can pry your filters and whatnot and other

things as long as you keep things basic I mean what to baby but don't just start

to pile on things because it will start to bog down a little bit there and I

think some of the problem really comes down to the RAM but again I would that

thermal throttling that you can see has been happening quite a bit it's been

bouncing off that all the time and then of course is lowing the CPU turbo the

speeds of the turbo there at times now I'm going to do the same encoding test

I've done on the previous models and the pro model and it managed to encode one

minute of 4k footage and do it in five minutes and one second on the pro

version so let's have a look with the same hardware by the way let's have a

look and see how long it's going to take on this particular model so going with

the same priest it's the YouTube 4k preset here and it's

one minute of footage let's get this exported now so as soon as I click this

export I'll start the timer as well okay so that's about to finish up but I won't

stop the timer until it actually closes this little bar here the encode time I

was looking like it's actually going to be about the same as the pro model with

the same exact hardware which has surprised me a little bit that was five

minutes and one second and there we go pretty much exactly the same there so I

did not expect that result which is good in a way to see so now to show you where

this notebook is really quite bad is that thermal throttling that happens so

when you're pushing both the GPU and the CPU while the CPU is not actually being

pushed too hard when you have a look at the utilization here it's only at about

30% but look at this the whole time it is thermal throttling you can see the

history here it's been thermal throttling continuously because of the

GPU so the GPU is being pushed quite hard at the moment with this benchmark

they're running in the background and if we just show you the clocks as well on

the GPU you can see here that yes it's been going up and down a little bit it's

not too bad those clocks but I have noticed that it does tend to clock down

a little bit lower than the me notebook pro with the exact same configuration

here so not great at all to see if you play another game for example something

that's using the CPU a lot more calculating physics and things then

you're gonna see just continual thermal throttling and the clocks they will not

clock up that high those turbos affecting of course that CPU performance

so for me this is not great to see because the Mino Book Pro that model I

didn't have any problems with thermal throttling the cooling could keep up

with everything but here Xiaomi has to limit the CPU they have to put on that

early thermal throttling just to stop it from overheating because if they did not

do this if it did not trigger thermal throttling I can see this getting up to

90 degrees if not even more if you're taxing both GPU and CPU so not at all

good when it comes to fan noise on the me

notebook f13 I find that it could actually be sometimes a little louder

than the previous generation because it's having to deal with that extra heat

being generated from the CPU now light tasks like web browsing you don't hear

the fans they do not come on or it might just come on low and then it later turns

off but when you do anything moderately demanding so if it's just a little bit

of photo editing or even when you start to run quite a few tabs in chrome you

will hear the fans come on now I'll give you a sample now I've 100% load and the

fans at 100 send that it is reasonably loud

so what does it like at gaming well it's actually not too bad considering the

hardware considering we've only got 2 gigabytes of dedicated double data rate

5 RAM on this and it's a an entry-level GPU here but it's so much better than

the integrated graphics solution so you can play a lot of the modern titles in

fact everything is playable out there you just need to lower down the settings

so often you have to lower the visuals to perhaps medium or low setting and on

very demanding games you have to also lower down the resolution from say 1080p

down to 720p and then games are gonna have playable frame rates that's not too

bad now if you want to see more gaming then please check out my full detailed

gaming review of the me notebook air 13 the 2018 model now if you're looking to

run Linux if you've seen my unboxing I tested that out and my touchpad was not

working I was running Mandara 17 point 1.3 now the recently released 17 point

1.4 update I have now burned that ISO to my USB pendrive here running a live

image and as you can see the mouse cursor is working so the touchpad now

works brightness control works Wireless the sound everything so far is working

on here so this is really good news for anyone that wants to run Linux on this

machine you won't have any problems it runs it really well and very quick so

streaming in 4k is perfectly smooth and fine no drop frames well I need three

drop frames out of 3500 here the connection keeps up as long as of course

you've got a fast enough connection to maintain that link and keep it buffering

really well but no problems it will natively play your a TVC codecs as well

ten bit and very fast performance overall multitasking getting in around

Windows not an issue at all with the core i5

8250 and finally a sample here from the webcam so it's 720p 30 frames per second

maximum and it can record the quality is pretty average now you hear a lot of

echo that's because I'm in a room that's almost empty

it's the reason for that but overall the my quality is good but we can it's

pretty average movie but it's decent enough for Skype calls at the moment I'm

in low light so it's not exactly performing wonderful ok guys so this is

a step up clearly over the 2017 model it's about 30% faster comes with a

better keyboard because of the new key caps it's black so easy to see with the

backlight versus the silver keys and the backlight can sometimes be a little bit

hard to make out touchpad more or less is kind of the same but slightly better

because of the precision drivers our fingerprint reader works great the

screen looks great as well it's very nice fully laminated it could have made

it touch but that's just my personal preference their build quality is

excellent it is a premium laptop now it falls short with battery life you get

around 6 hours max 5 6 hours it's not really that much more than the 2017

model now cooling has improved but not by much it's only 4 degrees to the touch

cooler after a couple of hours of gaming on this now one thing that bothers me in

this is I've limited the performance so they put single channel RAM and it also

starts to thermal throttle the CPU way earlier than the pro model and that

limits the performance there as well the GPU then has also been clocked a little

lower than the 15.6 inch model so that's about three areas there when they're

limiting their performance but the crazy thing is this is priced exactly the same

or even a little bit higher at the time of this review then the me notebook pro

model so I see absolutely no reason to go for this so in my mind skip this

model go for the meet notebook Pro because it has fader cooling it's got

separate thermal heat pipes and fans for the GPU for the CPU I've been a keyboard

it's much better than this one I do like typing on it a lot better we

also have a larger touch pair which is just a little bit more comfortable to

use and then we have better battery life as well as one other thing now one area

works not better the 15.6 inch model is the screen the screen because it's not

as sharp that's really about it and I feel that this one's got slightly better

colors on it so I preferred the screen in this model that really is about the

only thing and reason to go for it so there's a lot of reasons to

go for the 15.6 inch model because of that better performance you can also

increase the power limit on that one to get it to perform close to an i7 seven

thousand seven hundred HQ when you increase the power limit on this

particular model because of the early thermal throttling you get zero benefit

out of it so you can't boost the performance so that again just adds the

reason skip this if you can put up with a 15.6 inch extra size and the 1 kilo

more of weight get the 15.6 inch model so with that said check out my review up

here of the me notebook Pro 15.6 inch model the i5 model and then the i7

models where I have a review of that and thank you so much for watching this

review here and if you're new why not subscribe to the channel I'll have

plenty more up and coming including reviews of more laptops in the near

future bye for now

Spoken English Conversation Practice - Conversação em Inglês! (Subtitles) - Duration: 44:37.

- Morning, Julia. - Hi, Rebecca.

Are you going away?

I'm going to my parents' for the weekend.

My sister's picking me up at quarter past nine.

When are you getting back?

We're having a big family dinner on Sunday evening.

It's my father's birthday.

So I'm going straight into work on Monday.

You sound happy.

Do I? Perhaps I'm falling in love.

What? Are you serious?

Yes, I think so.

Who is it? What's he like?

Well, he's very good-looking and he's got lovely eyes.

What does he do? Come on, Julia. Who is it?

He works for a TV company.

Really? Do I know him?

In fact, he's probably on TV right now.

You're watching the local weekend news on Apex TV.

I'm Gary Fenton. It's nine fifteen.

Gary?

Oh, there's Cindy. Bye, Julia. See you on Monday.

Gary?

Well, what do you think?

Oh.

On Saturday mornings Charlie and Molly Craddock usually go shopping...

...but they aren't going shopping today.

They're doing something completely different.

They're walking round the local park.

And they're doing it backwards.

Molly. Why are you walking round the park backwards?

We're collecting money for local charities.

Is it difficult, Charlie?

Not for us, because we practise.

We walk round our garden for two hours every day.

- Backwards? - Of course!

- It's very easy, you know. - And it's great fun. Oh!

Oops!

Are you waiting for someone, Tim?

What? Oh, yes. Ah, here she is.

- Hi. - Hi, Julia.

Hi, Sean. How are you?

Not too bad, I suppose.

The police are coming to see us this afternoon.

Jason and Kylie put soap powder in the neighbours' fish pond yesterday.

Well, good luck. We're going into town.

Bye.

Have a nice weekend.

She's going out with someone and he works here.

- Ooh, who is it? - Gary.

- No! - Yes.

What's she giggling about?

It's Julia.

You'll never guess, but she's going out with Gary.

Nonsense! Julia's got more sense than that.

It's true. She told me on Saturday.

Well, never mind that.

What time am I meeting Frederick today?

Oh, he phoned to say that he can't make it.

Could you call him on his mobile? He's at the House of Commons.

Look out! She's coming.

- Hello, Julia. - Oh, um, hi.

Oh, Gary. Gary...

Julia, are you doing anything this evening?

Yes, I am. I'm going out.

Are you going out tomorrow, too?

No, I'm not. I'm staying in and watching a video with Rebecca.

What about Wednesday?

Look. What is this, Gary? What do you want?

Oh, come on, Julia. Don't be shy. I know your little secret.

Secret? What secret?

You know.

What do I know?

Oh, come on, you know.

Don't you?

Thanks.

How was your weekend at your parents?

Don't ask.

They argued all the time and I got the usual lecture.

"Why don't you get a proper job like Cindy? She's doing so well."

What about your weekend?

Well, on Saturday morning I was with Tim in Wrigley Park.

People do some funny things...

Yes, they do. Well, I can't stay here all day.

And then Julia arrived and she and Tim...

Julia?

Yeah, it seems they're going out together.

I didn't know anything about it.

Julia is going out with Tim? But...

Rebecca!

So what will this new series of yours be about?

If you come to the meeting tomorrow, you'll find out.

Some of your young fans, boys.

Can we have your autographs, please?

I'll use my own pen.

What's it like to be a star?

These kids can recognize real talent.

That's right.

Well, actually, this is for my grandma.

And the next item is: Tim's new series. Tim?

OK. Well the series will be called "People"...

...and it will be about people's lives...

...not famous people, but ordinary people...

...like nurses, shop assistants, bank managers, housewives.

Won't that be a bit - ordinary?

No, they'll be ordinary people, but with an extraordinary story to tell.

- How will it work? - It'll be very simple.

We'll interview someone in the studio about his or her life story.

And will you be the interviewer?

I'd like Gary to do it.

Me? Er, why?

I'd like to direct it. It'll be a chance for both of us to try something new.

- Gary? - I think it's an excellent idea.

Very exciting.

So, who have we got for the first programme?

It's this woman here - Samantha Richmond. She's a waitress.

Uh-huh. So what's her story?

She got married on her sixteenth birthday.

She and her boyfriend ran away to Gretna Green...

...because her parents didn't approve.

Sounds interesting. Are they still married?

Yes, they are. They've got five children now.

Here's a photo of the family.

If you do that again, I'll go back to my desk.

OK. OK. I promise I'll behave.

Good. Now there's a lot more about Samantha Richmond.

She's a very interesting woman.

What time will this woman be here, Julia? It's already twenty past two.

I'm sure she'll be here soon.

Excuse me. There's a message on my answerphone for Julia...

...from Samantha Richmond.

- When? Just now? - This morning.

What?

I was out of the office all morning at a meeting.

Anyway, she says she's very sorry...

...but she can't come this afternoon because one of her children is ill.

Oh dear, I hope it's nothing serious.

Nothing serious?

We haven't got an interview. That's serious, isn't it?

I meant the child.

Well, if she can't do it, we'll just have to find someone from here.

Well, it can't be me, because I'm the interviewer.

How about Frederick?

He's in Bangkok.

Anyway, it needs to be someone ordinary.

You can't be serious.

Our guest this evening is Sean Casey - a cameraman here at Apex TV.

Tell me something about your early life, Sean.

Well, I was born in Ireland...

...but my parents moved to England when I was still a baby...

...and I grew up in London.

We were quite a big family - seven kids.

I didn't do very well at school and I left when I was sixteen.

What did you do after school?

I got a job in a furniture factory.

Furniture? How interesting.

Not really.

But in my free time I played the bass guitar...

...with a band called Nightmare.

And we got a few good gigs, so I gave up my job...

...and went on the road with the band.

Really?

Yeah. We never became famous...

...but we played with some famous bands...

...REM, Guns N' Roses, Dire Straits.

We had some great times.

I remember one night in Las Vegas, I was in a bar with U2.

They're great guys - loads of fun.

Well, we were in this bar and...

Evening, Sean. We watched you on TV last night. You were very good.

Thank you, Ted.

Yes, you were great, Sean.

I didn't see it.

The kids wanted to watch some quiz programme on the other channel.

Look out, boys, some more of your fans.

I'll just get my pen out.

There he is!

Can we have your autograph, please, Mr Casey?

We saw you on TV last night.

Did you really play with all those big bands?

- Yeah. - What was it like?

It was really great.

Huh, the kids of today!

Yeah. What do they know?

Anything for me?

Here you are. I'm going to put my feet up.

It's been a long day.

This'll be from my sister.

She works in Hong Kong.

Talking of families, are you working this weekend?

Just Saturday.

I'm going to my parents' for the weekend.

Would you like to come over on Sunday?

They'd love to meet you.

Sure. What time?

Why don't you come over about three and stay for dinner in the evening?

OK. Oh, how do I get there?

I'll give you a map.

No! I've got my personal organizer.

The easiest way is to take the London Road to Kingston.

There's a big Asda supermarket just before you get to the centre of Kingston.

You go past Asda and take the first turning on the right.

There's a post office on the corner.

First on the right. OK.

Go down there till you come to the second set of traffic lights.

Turn left there and you'll see a pub called the Black Bull on the right.

Turn right and Gloucester Avenue is the third road on the left.

Number 29.

Turn right by the Black Bull and third left. 29. Got it.

Morning, dear. Do you want some breakfast?

Yes, please. Morning, Dad.

Morning.

Do you have to do that now?

You said you wanted it mending.

- Are we going shopping today? - No, not today.

Do you remember old Mrs Burns?

I'm taking her to stay with her daughter this morning.

Where does her daughter live?

In one of those little roads near King George Square.

We can go shopping tomorrow.

It's more convenient on Sunday mornings anyway...

...because there aren't so many people.

Don't forget Tim's coming tomorrow.

We'll be back in time.

When I was driving home yesterday, I saw these two kids.

They were running out of a newsagent's and the owner was running after them.

The kids ran right in front of my car and I nearly hit them.

But that wasn't the worst thing.

When they turned round, do you know what?

It was Jason and Kylie?

Tim Barnes.

What? When?

Where?

Thank you.

A robbery at a jeweller's shop in King George Square.

Here we are, Mrs Burns.

Oh, there's another police car. I wonder what's happening.

Oh dear, there's nowhere to park. Well, I'll just stop here.

We won't be long.

Turn right here. That'll be the quickest way.

Oh no!

Come on! You're blocking the street.

We won't be a minute.

Can't you move any faster?

Allow me. It'll be quicker.

Well, really!

There you are, Mum.

So what happened?

Well, when we got there, I couldn't find anywhere to park...

...so I stopped in the middle of the street.

While I was helping Mrs Burns out of the car...

...another car pulled up behind me...

...and the driver of the car beeped his horn at me.

Some people!

Poor old Mrs Burns can't move very fast.

So while we were walking to her door, the young man started shouting at us.

That's terrible!

And then he grabbed the suitcases from the car...

...and he just dumped them on the pavement.

How rude!

But, you know, I'm sure I've seen him somewhere before.

Tim will be here soon.

Uh, huh.

It isn't usually as busy as that on a Sunday, is it, dear?

No, dear.

I'll take these in.

That's him! That's his car!

What, dear?

Excuse me. I'd like a word with you!

Hi.

Do you two know each other?

Well, this is the rude young man that I was telling you about.

Oh dear. Mum, Dad. This is Tim.

Pleased to meet you.

Yes, Mother, if I have time I'll try to go shopping at lunchtime.

Yes, I'll buy some apples.

No, I won't buy any pears, I know you don't like them.

Now, have we got any coffee?

Well, go and look and then ring me back.

Yes, Mother?

Oh, I'm sorry. I was expecting another call.

What can I do for you? Yes, I have seen the programme.

I saw it last night.

No. No, I don't think the programmes are too violent.

I'm afraid I can't agree with that.

She's on the phone.

Tim, have you done that programme about the health farm yet?

No, we haven't.

We're still looking for someone to go there...

...so that we can film their experiences.

I've always wanted to go to a health farm.

But you're already fit and healthy...

...and we need someone who's unfit and stressed out.

Stupid man! Rebecca, have those tapes arrived?

I'm afraid they won't be here till next week.

Next week? That's too late!

Get me Frederick!

He's gone to Rio and he won't be back till Monday.

Oh, give me strength!

What do you want, Tim?

Hello. Rebecca Bond speaking.

Just a minute, please.

It's your mother again.

Yes, all right, Mother.

Yes, I'll get some coffee. What?

No, Mother, I haven't hidden your glasses.

No, I can't come home and look for them.

Goodbye.

I need a break.

Welcome to Westland Manor Health and Fitness Centre, Mrs McKay.

My name's Celine, and I'm your personal consultant.

- Have you ever stayed here before? - No, I haven't.

- And how long will you be with us? - About a week.

I see. Well, first we'll do some of our regular tests...

...and then we can work out your personal fitness programme.

So would you like to follow me?

So, you've finished your tests...

...and Celine has worked out a programme for you.

Now it's time for your evening meal.

Meal? You call this a meal?

A bit of lettuce, a few nuts and some fruit.

They won't let me have any biscuits or ice cream or chocolate.

Can you have any wine or beer?

I can't even have a cup of tea or coffee. This is my drink.

A glass of water?

I used to be a war correspondent, you know...

...and I had some hard times...

...but I always had a good meal at the end of the day...

...with meat and cheese - not this, this rabbit food.

And cut! That was great, Martha.

That's it for today, Sean.

Right. Where shall we go for a meal? I'm starving.

Let's try that pub down the road.

I fancy a nice big steak and a plateful of chips.

Tim, I won't forget this.

It's nine-thirty and Martha is starting her exercise programme in the gym.

That's it. Swing those arms. Swing those arms. Good!

OK, another ten minutes and it's time for lunch...

...and then at half past two we're going jogging.

Jogging? I've never been jogging in my life!

Oh, how did you talk me into this, Tim?

Yes, OK. Bye, then.

Yes, love you, too.

I used to play with this band, you know.

Oh, yes? Do you want some more French fries? I've had enough.

Sure.

Quick. Here they come.

So, Martha. How do you feel?

I have never felt worse.

I have done some difficult things in my life.

I've slept in airports, in fields, even in the street.

I've travelled for three days on a camel.

I've eaten snakes and insects.

But this - this is just too much.

And what's the next thing on your programme?

The next thing on my programme?

You'll see. First, I think I'll make a phone call.

Can I borrow your mobile?

Sure.

Mother. I'm coming home.

Hey! Stop! Martha!!

Anything interesting?

How about going to the theatre?

What's on?

Waiting for Godot. I'd like to see that.

OK. When?

How about tomorrow?

No, I'm working on Tuesday and Wednesday evening this week.

Let's go on Thursday then.

All right. Are you going to get the tickets?

Yes. You forgot them last time.

I couldn't help it. A job came up at the last minute.

Hmm. I've heard that story before.

Aren't you going to your aerobics class?

Not this week. The instructor's hurt her knee.

Are you going out?

Yes, we're going to the theatre to see Waiting for Godot.

- What's the time? - Ten past seven.

Oh no. I'm going to be late.

Tim'll already be at the theatre by now.

Hello. 823846.

Rebecca? It's Tim. Is Julia there?

It's Tim.

I'm sorry, Tim. I'll be with you in ten minutes.

Well, um, I'm not at the theatre actually.

I'm afraid something's come up and I've got to deal with it.

Oh, that's wonderful! So what am I going to do with the tickets?

I don't know. I'm sorry but I have to go. Bye.

What's up?

He can't make it - again!

This is the third time he's done something like this.

Last time he forgot to get the tickets.

The time before that his jeep had a flat tyre.

Do you fancy going to the theatre?

Ooh, yes. I've always wanted to see Waiting for Godot.

Well, it'll be better than waiting for Tim!

Hi. Do you mind if I join you? Oh, here comes the worker.

Did you go to see that play?

Yes, thanks. It was very good, wasn't it, Rebecca?

Excellent! I really enjoyed it.

Look, I'm sorry I couldn't make it.

Work comes first every time, eh, Tim?

I hope you're not going to do anything like this tomorrow night.

It's my friend Charlotte's, party.

Except ... um...

...I've agreed to stand in for Pete Riley tomorrow...

...so I probably won't be free till about nine thirty.

Would you mind going on your own and I'll meet you there?

Oh, all right. But don't be too late.

I was so embarrassed.

But there was nobody else to do the interview.

Everybody asked about you.

"I hear you've got a new bloke, Julia?"

"Where's your new boyfriend, Julia? Is he here?"

- It was so... - Embarrassing?

It's not funny. You wouldn't like it if I stood you up.

But it's my job. You know what it's like.

I can't help it if something important comes up.

Something important? So I'm not important?

I didn't mean that.

There are other things in life besides work, you know.

I've got a job, too, but I'm not a slave to it.

But you, you'd miss your own wedding if "something important" came up.

No, I wouldn't.

Well, I'm fed up with it, Tim, and I'm not going to put up with it any more.

It won't happen again. I promise.

Are you doing anything this evening?

I'm having dinner with Julia and her parents.

And this time I'm not going to be late.

You're listening to Radio 591 .

This is the local news.

We're getting reports of a serious fire at the Southgate furniture factory.

We haven't got any more details yet...

...but we'll bring them to you as soon as we get them.

The Southgate place. That's about fifteen minutes from here.

But what about your dinner with Julia?

That's not till half past eight.

That traffic light's going to turn red.

Oh no. A police car.

Hello? Sean.

At the police station? Speeding?

But the police don't arrest people for speeding.

Going through a red light?

Arguing with a police officer?

Resisting arrest? I don't believe this.

Just one question, Sean. Why was he speeding in the first place?

I see. Thank you.

Shall we eat?

Anyway, the Prime Minister asked: "So are we waiting for Frederick?"

And Martha said: "I hope not. He's going to be in China till next week."

So... Blimey! Where did you spend the night?

Julia, I...

- Don't talk to me, Tim. - But I...

I don't want anything more to do with you.

I've had enough. We're finished.

What are you staring at?

Tim Barnes.

I've got two tickets to see Romeo and Juliet tomorrow.

Oh really.

What would you say if I asked you to come with me?

What would I say, Gary? I'd say "Thank you. I'd love to go."

Every day, millions of tons of rubbish are produced.

We throw our rubbish into the dustbin.

It's collected away and - Cut.

Collected and taken away...

We'll have to do that bit again.

Give me another can.

Every day, millions of tons of rubbish are produced.

We throw our rubbish into the dustbin.

It's collected and taken away. But what happens to it then?

Some things, like bottles, cans, and paper will be recycled.

Some things will be burnt.

But most of it will be dumped in places like this.

This is the landfill site at Westbridge.

It was first used ten years ago...

...and it was expected to last for thirty or forty years.

But now it's - um. Oh damn. Cut.

It's OK. I think we'll be able to edit that out and...

No. This is going to be done properly.

We'll have to start again from the beginning.

We haven't got any more cans.

Then I'll just have to use one of these.

Every day, millions of tons of rubbish are produced.

We throw our rubbish into the dustbin...

Have I got an appointment with Frederick now?

He's in Moscow. I can get him on his mobile, if you want.

No, it's all right.

What on earth is the matter with Julia?

I had to tell her something three times.

Haven't you heard? She and Tim have split up.

And Sean says that Tim's just the same.

What do you mean?

They had to film something ten times this morning...

...because Tim couldn't remember his lines.

That's not like Tim.

I know. And Julia hasn't smiled for days.

Well, you can't work with people like that.

I've seen it too many times and it always causes problems.

We'll have to do something about it.

I'm sorry about this morning, Sean.

It's all right. Is it Julia?

I've tried to explain, but she just won't listen.

I'm sure you'll be able to sort things out.

Maybe. But she's going to have to make the first move. She broke it off.

Look. She'll have to come past here when she leaves.

Why don't you just say hello to her?

That isn't too difficult, is it? Same again?

Why should I make the first move? It was all his fault.

You don't have to do anything really.

He's over there. Just say hello to him when you leave.

Maybe. Anyway, I'm going now. Bye.

Bye.

Are you still OK for Romeo and Juliet tonight?

What? Oh, er, I suppose so.

Great. I'll pick you up about quarter to seven?

Yes, OK, Gary.

See you later, then.

Just two minutes to go and it's still one-one.

Legrand. Anderson. Panini. Can he do anything?

Anderson again, and here's Legrand.

What a goal! It's 2-1 with less than a minute on the clock.

Julia. I'm sorry. Please forgive me.

Oh, Tim. I love you.

Julia!

Julia!

Julia!

What?

Oh, sorry.

Are you OK? You were miles away.

I was just thinking about something. Nothing important.

Well, here we are. Home again.

Thank you for this evening, Gary. I enjoyed the play.

Aren't you going to ask me in for a cup of coffee?

No, Gary. It's late and I won't be able to get up in the morning.

Just a goodnight kiss, then?

No, Gary. Just goodnight.

Oh, sweet Julia. Just one kiss for your poor Romeo.

- Don't be silly. - Ow! My ankle!

Oh, Gary!

How's your ankle?

I think it's all right.

Will you be able to drive?

Yes, I'll be fine. Goodnight.

Tim Barnes.

What? Where are you? Frankfurt?

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm working today.

No, it's all right. I can change that.

No, really. What time do you get to London?

Ten forty-five. OK. I'll be there. See you later.

Hi, Pete? It's Tim.

Sorry to bother you so early, but I've got a bit of a problem.

Can you cover for me today?

Cheers.

- What are you doing? - I've just seen Tim.

I thought he was going in late today...

...but he seemed to be in a hurry.

I suppose "something important" has come up.

How was your date with Gary?

Oh, don't ask.

It's great to see you.

- Lovely to see you, too, Tim. - But what are you doing here?

I've got an interview next week for a new job.

Why didn't you let me know before?

I didn't know myself until yesterday, and all the flights were fully booked.

I was lucky to get this one.

Anyway, I wanted to give you a surprise.

Well, you certainly did that.

Now, what would you like to do today?

Oh, I don't know really. I'm a bit tired.

Where is it? Oh, I put it here yesterday, I know I did. Oh no!

Julia, Julia. Come on now.

It's OK. I'll be all right.

You'll have to sort things out with him, you know.

You can't go on like this.

Do you want me to talk to him?

No, I'll go and see him when we get home - if he's there.

Martha said he's taking a few days off.

The man phoned again later on.

So I said, if I were you, I'd write a letter to the Managing Director...

...but he said... what's the matter?

I've had a really nice day.

Just a minute, Denise. I'll introduce you to my neighbours.

Can it wait till tomorrow?

I feel a bit tired now - jet lag.

OK. We can call in at the wine bar tomorrow evening.

I'm sure they'll be there.

Can I have a word, please?

Of course, Julia. What's the problem?

Can I move to another department?

A transfer? But why? You're doing so well here.

It's, it's personal.

Tim, I suppose. Haven't you two made it up yet?

But you were made for each other.

When you get to my age you can see these things.

Well, if you really want a transfer...

...I'll talk to Frederick when he gets back from Russia.

But I'll be sorry to lose you.

I'll just go to the loo.

Hi.

Where's your girlfriend?

What?

It didn't take you long to find one.

It didn't take me long? What about you?

Last night you were kissing and cuddling him in the street.

I wasn't!

You were - I went out to get a pizza and when I was coming back, I saw you.

I wasn't cuddling Gary. He had fallen over and twisted his ankle.

I was helping him. Isn't that right, Gary?

Well, I didn't know.

I'm back. Are these your friends?

Yes. Let me introduce everyone.

This is, um, Gary, Sean, Rebecca and Julia.

This is Denise - my sister.

- Hello. - Hi!

Your sister? Your sister? Why didn't you say?

You didn't give me a chance.

There's a free table over there.

So, what are you doing here?
