Hello, I'm Adrian. I'm the Head of Driver Growth and Performance or DRONE, which is a part of Business Intelligence at GO-JEK.
What is Business Intelligence?
Business Intelligence is a function in business who collects data, process it, manages it, in order to make it into a useful information and insight for business users in making the right strategic decisions.
What is the difference between business intelligence and data science?
What is the difference between business intelligence and science data?
Actually business intelligence with data science is something similar, both do data analysis, we do visualization, we also do mathematical and statistical calculations.
But the basic difference is in the focus of its own analysis. While BI (Business Inteligence) is a function that analyzes retrospectively, Science Data is more predictive.
The analogy of the differences between Business Intelligence and Data Science can be illustrated in cases such as coming to the office late.
When the incident happened, we went, "Oh! I came late to the office" what BI does is doing to find out why we came late to the office.
So we assess what path we take yesterday so that we come late, what transportation we use yesterday so we are late to come to the office.
So in the future we can improve ourselves to not be late again.
While if Data Science will help us before we leave for office, it's like choosing the right transport, the right way.
For example there is a transportation capital that we can use like a motor or a car, with Data Science we can know when we have to use the car,
because it will rain and we should choose the path B because today the road was not jammed.
How Business Intelligence Works at GO-JEK?
BI in GO-JEK there are some parts that take care of business functions
such as BI for operations, for drivers, for customers, for products like GO-PAY, GO-MART, and others.
There is also BI core to ensure that the BI infrastructure is running well,
so they handle all the process to be streamlined, so that the data is always right, and also the report is out at the right time.
For example for my team, Driver Growth and Performance,
let's say we have business questions like, how many offers do we need to serve next month's demand.
We will look at historical data such as how many customers we have in the previous month, how many orders they made,
how also from these drivers, whether they are online for a week or a whole month.
From these data, we do the processing, we calculate, so that in the end we can feel the many supplies we need for each city and time.
How to be good at business intelligence?
The principles that we must have to be a good business intelligence,
the first is to ask the right business questions.
So we have to know what the right questions to solve a problem,
because without proper business questions,
we do not have the right answer to the problems we find in business.
The second principle is knowing how to get the correct and relevant data.
So first we already know what business questions we have to answer,
we also have to know how to get the relevant data with the business question
so later at the end we can process it and be the right answer as well.
The third principle is to treat analytics products as products.
So we have to treat the results of our analysis of the information we generate or the insights to be used easily by the user
In which the users are the various business functions that exist within the company.
So that they can use it to make better strategic decisions.
The fourth principle is make the whole process streamline and scaleable.
So in this BI process from start to finish, from data retrieval, storage, processing,
we must make sure that the process is streamlined, all smooth.
So that we can produce the end result of information and insight for business needs at the right time as well.
So if there is a question of business, "why does something 'A' happen?", We immediately have the answer.
What Should A Business Intelligence Have?
So a BI must have three basic skills.
There's business skills, so it's about business, so how does a business work as well as parts of its own business.
The second is basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics, as we deal with data and facts.
We must know how to process it scientifically (scientific).
The third is technical ability, because we are also in processing this data using technology.
Many things we also do with programming, so we must also have a good programming basics.
Where Can You Learn More About Business Intelligence?
To learn the necessary things as a BI, many resources can be addressed.
Like articles, books that we can search on the internet, as well as online courses either paid or free.
Because BI is also a lot of wrestling with the data by producing good information,
may be interesting also for us to read Moneyball, a book written by Michael Lewis.
This book tells about how from the data and stats of a baseball club player,
a baseball club can determine which players can be bought and which players can use for the game.
Apart from the books we can also find interesting articles or blogs on the Internet
about Business Intelligence or data in general.
One of the blogs I recommend to go is GO-JEK Data Blog (https://medium.com/@gojek_bi)
there contains insights generated by Business Intelligence at GO-JEK.
