S. Korean President orders resolute action against U.S. unfair import tariffs - Duration: 2:29.

President Moon Jae-in called on officials to deal with Washington's unfair trade measures

by considering drastic action such as taking the matter to the WTO.

His remarks come as the U.S. mulls slapping huge import tariffs on South Korean steel.

Our chief Cheongwadae correspondent Moon Connyoung starts us off.

Be bold and resolute in dealing with unreasonable trade protectionism.

That's South Korean President Moon Jae-in in response to the U.S.' plans to slap up

to 50-percent import tariffs on washers and solar panels... and the Commerce Department's

latest recommendation to President Trump to impose steep curbs on all steel imports from

a number of countries: On that list, South Korea.

At a weekly meeting with his top aides on Monday, the South Korean president kicked

off the first work day following a long holiday weekend on a stern note against Washington's

move to protect its manufacturers.

"I want you to deal with unfair trade protectionist measures with confidence and resolution.

Consider filing a complaint to the World Trade Organization and reviewing whether there are

any violations to the Korea, U.S. free trade agreement.

Make sure you argue its unfairness in the negotiations to revise the Korea-U.S. FTA."

This is the strongest word yet from the South Korean president on the U.S.' stepped up efforts

to protect its industries... and it came with a prescription seeking a fundamental solution

to the nation's exports structure.

"We should take this opportunity to speed up our drive for innovative growth to increase

our firms' export competitiveness and diversify our exports market by actively pushing forward

the New Northern Policy and the New Southern Policy."

The New Northern and Southern Policies are strategies introduced by South Korea's Moon

administration aimed at expanding economic cooperation and exchanges with nations to

the north - Russia and Eurasian economies - and to the south... linking South Korea,

Southeast Asian nations... all the way to India.

"The South Korean president's unusually tough orders this week in dealing with the Trump

administration's growing appetite for trade protectionism is noteworthy as the country

in question is the United States, an ally key now than ever for President Moon considering

the latest change in dynamics involving North Korea.

The Blue House, however, drew a clear line between security and trade affairs saying

the president is adamant on dealing with the two separately taking different approaches

for each.

Moon Connyoung, Arirang News, the Blue House."

Cold weather gone, dryness intensifies _ 021918 - Duration: 1:39.

Hello I'm Michelle Park here with the weather update.

The weather was relatively warm today, but it's been cloudy and quite dusty.

On top of that, the dry conditions are getting more severe by the day, with alerts issued

basically everywhere in the country.

In some places, the humidity is at just 10 percent.

So please do be careful with anything that might be a source of fire.

In Pyeongchang, the host city of the Winter Olympics,...the mercury in the morning is

still dropping down to near minus 10 degrees Celsius, but, this is decent considering the

location.

During the day, the highs make it up well into the positives as well.

Tomorrow we can expect a brighter day than today,... with Seoul beginning the morning

at minus 2 degrees Celsius.

Daegu minus 1 and Busan higher at 4 degrees.

Into the day, Seoul rises up to 6 degrees, while the southern regions make up into the

teens.

The weather will continue to be warm for the time being.

Although on Thursday, the west of the central region will get some precipitation.

I'll leave you with the weather conditions around the world.

150 North Koreans in Canada facing deportation - Duration: 2:15.

Canada.

Widely acknowledged as a safe haven for refugees.

But that may not apply to North Korean defectors.

About hundred-and-fifty of them are reportedly facing deportation due to false statements

in their asylum application forms.

Here's Ji Myung-kil with a closer look into the situation.

Canada... despite its reputation as a save haven for refugees... has deported nearly

2-thousand North Korean refugees since 2013.

The reason, according to the Canadian government, is... that the refugees simply lied on their

asylum applications.

As Canada continues to kick out North Korean defectors... another 1-hundred-fifty are under

imminent threat of deportation.

"If the case turns out to be true... then there would be a statement issued from the

UNHCR headquarters for the deportation of 150 North Koreans."

Al Jazeera interviewed a North Korean defector going by the surname Kim... who came to Canada

11 years ago with his wife,... daughter and son.

They have two more children who are Canadian citizens.

If deportation orders are given,... it would be catastrophic for Mr. Kim's family.

Another defector family under the surname Jo... told Al Jazeera that the family did

lie on their asylum application,... saying they defected to China,... not South Korea,...

to help ease the immigration process, adding that they did it to escape the horrible situation.

The Jo family could be broken up too... if Canada carries out the deportation orders.

"The UNHCR cannot exert its own authority on other states for legal procedures without

intergovernmental agreements."

According to the Canadian Federation of North Korean Defectors,... family members still

left behind in North Korea remain vulnerable because of the defectors' escape.

Therefore, attracting attention to their situation could be deadly... as North Korean spies can

track down the defectors,... and if found by the North Korean government,... their families

in North Korea could be executed or sent to labor camps.

Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.

Keeping warm in the far north - Ranger Black - Duration: 1:01.

My name is Martin.

I have 12 huskies.

Yeah, I love them,

they're family members.

I live in a cabin,

right in the middle of Svalbard nature.

We don't have running water

and we heat our cabin with paraffin.

So getting ten 200-litre barrels from town,

makes you appreciate the heat in your cabin.

Well, to get to the store

I have to drive about 15 km

and if there's a blizzard outside,

a normal ten minute drive

could take up to an hour, an hour and a half.

Most people would describe the way I live as a tough life...

But for me it's a perfect life.

U.S. willing to work with Kim Jong-un: Tillerson - Duration: 2:14.

With tensions on the peninsula easing during the Olympics, the possibility of U.S.-North

Korea talks have been raised.

Washington's top diplomat claims he is waiting for the regime approach them, but pressure

and sanctions will remain in place until then.

Kwon Jang-ho delves deeper into how things could unfold.

U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, has reiterated that the White House is willing

to work with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

During an interview with CBS in Sunday, he stressed that although military options remain

on the table, a diplomatic resolution was best, and that Washington is waiting to hear

from Pyongyang that the regime is ready to talk.

However, Tillerson also said that until then, the U.S. will keep up its campaign of pressure

and sanctions.

He said the U.S. is not using a carrot to convince Pyongyang to talk, but using "large

sticks"... and added that North Korea keeping its nuclear

arsenal buys the regime nothing other than further diplomatic and economic isolation.

This was further emphasized by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who at a Republican fundraiser

on Saturday said that despite the recent thawing of tensions on the Korean peninsula, there

is no change in policy towards Pyongyang, and the strongest measures will remain until

North Korea decides to give up its ballistic and nuclear missile programs.

North Korea watchers say the possibility of U.S.-North Korea talks are closer than ever,

but with Pyongyang having no interest in giving up its nuclear weapons, for now it's unlikely

to progress further than exploratory talks.

"North Korea has no reason not to take part in exploratory talks.

The U.S. also has nothing to lose.

If something does come out of them it would be great, and even if there is no progress,

the U.S. will continue its pressure campaign."

Meanwhile, Pyongyang is keeping up its anti-U.S. rhetoric.

North Korea's state-run newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, accused the Trump administration on

Monday of obstructing the improvement of inter-Korean relations with acts of continued pressure.

The commentary also pointed to the joint U.S.-South Korea military drills, which are set to return

after the Olympics.

PyeongChang Winter Olympics Day 10 - Duration: 2:41.

We're into another week of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Hi, I'm Kim Hyesung with the latest results and a close look at the events to come.

Let's kick things off with the highlights.

The South Korean women's curling team is on fire.

In the 8th round robin session Monday morning, the ladies claimed victory against Sweden...

albeit narrowly, seven to six.

This comes after beating Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain,... and trouncing China 12 to

5 yesterday.

At five and one the home team now stands atop the group, shoulder to shoulder with Sweden

and Japan.

The short dance program also took place this morning.

South Korea's ice dance duo Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin scored 61-point-22 points,

ranking 16th out of 24 teams.

The duo will perform their free dance for the finals to the tune of "Arirang" tomorrow.

Speed skating has been South Korea's forte.

Although Lee Sang-hwa had to settle for silver on Sunday, that still makes her the first

Asian speed skater to win a medal in the women's 500 meter event in three straight Olympics.

The two-time Olympic champ clocked in at 37-point-33 seconds, just Point-3-9 seconds behind Japan's

( ) Nao Kodaira.

Though the local speedster failed to clinch her third gold, the home fans were cheering

for her, with chants of her name filling the arena.

Now, let's take a look at the medal tally so far.

Norway tops the list with 9 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze medals.

Germany trailing behind with a total of 18 medals.

Sweden ranks 6th with four golds and 3 silvers.

The host country is in ninth place with three golds, two from men's and women's 15-hundred

meter short track speed skating, and one from men's skeleton, claimed by 23 year-old Yun

Sung-bin.

There's still a lot of exciting action to come.

The quarterfinals of the women's team pursuit in speed skating will start in about two hours.

South Korea will race against the Netherlands, the winner of the women's team pursuit at

the Sochi Olympics.

The men's 500 meter speed skating event is slated for nine, where three South Korean

athletes, including former Olympic Champion Mo Tae-bum , will compete.

And the final round for men's team ski jumping is also scheduled for later tonight.

So don't miss it

That's all I have for now.

I'll bring you more updates in our 8pm newscast, Daniel.
