Today we're going to learn about the famous abolitionist, Frederick Douglass.

Although he was born a slave, Frederick Douglass later escaped to freedom and became famous

around the world as a writer, speaker, and supporter of freedom for slaves and equal

rights for everyone.

He was born on a plantation in Maryland and named Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.

Because he was born into slavery, he never knew his birthday.

Slave records show he was born sometime in February of 1818.

Frederick Douglass never knew his father and spent very little time with his mother.

Instead, he was raised by his grandmother until he was six or seven, when he was old

enough to begin work on the plantation.

Two years later, he was sent to Baltimore to be a child's companion in the house of

Mr. Hugh Auld.

It was in Baltimore that young Frederick began to learn how to read.

Mr. Auld's wife, Sophia, taught him the alphabet and how to make simple words, but when her

husband found out what she was doing, he forced her to stop.

He said that teaching a slave to read was illegal and unsafe, that once a slave learned

to read he would never be satisfied with slavery and it would be impossible to keep him.

When young Frederick heard those words, he suddenly realized that learning to read and

write would be his pathway from slavery to freedom.

Although he no longer had a teacher, he secretly taught himself to read and write by watching

others, determined not to give up even though he was punished whenever he was caught.

At about 15 years old, Frederick Douglass was sent from Baltimore back to the plantation,

where he was forced to work for a cruel master who whipped and beat him frequently.

One day when he was sixteen years old, he fought back during a beating, and won, and

the man never beat him again.

Soon after this he was sent to work for another master, and there he made an attempt to escape

to freedom.

That attempt failed, and Frederick Douglass was sent back to Baltimore to work in a shipyard.

In Baltimore he made friends with free black men and women, including Anna Murray, who

encouraged him to try to escape again.

With ID papers borrowed from another friend, Frederick Douglass disguised himself as a

free black sailor and took a train north to New York on September 3, 1838.

Once safe in New York, he wrote to Anna Murray, who traveled north to be with him.

They were married a few days later and settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where they

changed their last name to Douglass to avoid being found by Frederick's old master.

At 20 years old, Frederick Douglass was finally a free man.

Soon, he became a preacher, and began attending abolitionist meetings with others who wanted

an end to slavery in the United States.

Before long, he was speaking at anti-slavery meetings himself.

In 1845 he published his first autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass,

an American Slave."

It became wildly popular in the United States as well as Europe, selling thousands of copies.

Douglass and his friends worried that the fame caused by his book would put him in danger

of being recaptured by his old master, and so he traveled to Great Britain for safety.

While there, he was a popular speaker.

Crowds of people came to listen to him.

His supporters there raised enough money to purchase his legal freedom from his old owner,

at a cost of about seven hundred dollars.

With his legal freedom secured, Frederick Douglass returned to the United States in

1847.

There, he continued his fight for freedom and equality.

He started an abolitionist newspaper, attended women's rights conventions, and called for

desegregation of schools.

He also helped escaping slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

By the time the Civil War began, Frederick Douglass was one of the most famous black

men in America.

He even served as an advisor to President Abraham Lincoln, calling for equal treatment

of black soldiers in the Union army.

Following the end of the Civil War and the ratification of the 13th amendment to the

Constitution - which completely outlawed slavery in the United States - Frederick Douglass

continued to call for equality.

Black people and women still did not have the right to vote, and states in the South

were passing new laws to segregate black people from white people.

He lived to see the passage of the 14th amendment, which made everyone born in the United States

a citizen, and the 15th amendment, which gave former slaves and black men the right to vote.

He would not live to see women receive the right to vote or segregation end.

On February 20, 1895, Frederick Douglass spoke in public for the last time, at a Women's

Rights meeting.

After returning home, he suffered a heart attack and died.

He was about 77 years old.

Frederick Douglass remains an influential figure in the history of Civil Rights in America.

He has been honored with statues and his name is found on bridges and schools across the

country.

His face has even been put on stamps and coins.

He fought all his life for equality for everyone.

He always believed what he said in the motto of his newspaper, "Right is of no Sex – Truth

is of no Color – God is the Father of us all, and we are all brethren."

I hope you enjoyed learning about Frederick Douglass today.

Goodbye till next time!

Dapp Styled Review - Duration: 7:33.

welcome back YouTube what's going on guys I have a new box right here this is

that styled now this right here first time I'm taking a look at this box it's

very similar to like a bumper like a stitch fix except it's better I mean you

got a lot of options with this box these items imma let you guys see the like the

website and how the process works it's really cool you know you you look at the

different outfits all these are styled by like professional stylists who style

entertainers different things like that so these outfits are already like

pre-styled and already ready to go and then they do give you the option to you

know alter some of the items so maybe you know you're gonna get shoes in the

box possibly depending on what level you get you know you can alter you might be

able to change the jeans the shoes I think one of the outfits on there I

really like they had red shoes maybe everybody doesn't want to do red shoes

so you have the option so you know get get it done another color shoe how the

cool thing about - styled is they partner with like Nordstrom so you're

getting some no known name-brand so you're able to customize the outfits a

little bit but all the offers are definitely pretty doesn't you know pre

style for you so there's those $175 level the 250 to 350 under 450 of course

I had to go with the 450 levels used to code s a 1 5 level save you 15% off so

what this box right here with my coat is around 380 also with the 175 level

you're able to get that for like 140 or 150 so that's a good deal I think it's

worth it but I want you guys to see exactly what I got so let's take a look

at - style so you have a nice box here you know marketing is all over the box

so what you get is what you see like you know stitch fish boffo you pay for

what's in the box but I've never had any good experiences with Bob though but you

know everybody might have different experience but here you go you have the

paper you know price right always knock it over so you definitely know what

you're getting in this box ahead of time and let's see what we have all right you

have a box full of clothes like I said each level has maybe one outfit 12 it

just depends on which package you're going with this right here we have a

button-up shirt oh I like these a lot some Pumas I like the fact that you're

getting some shoes I have some Pumas here a nice shirt right here some jeans

but let's just go into each item all right so right here this t-shirt yes

it looks like a regular v-neck t-shirt but if you guys don't know psycho bunny

is extremely comfortable it is super soft it has like a nice cool temperature

to it just I guess it's the material what is it what do we have here we have

5% spandex 95% motile I don't even know that is what yes you can see is stretchy

and I would try this stuff on so you got to see what the whole outfit looks like

it's it's a it's a whole outfit all the items in this box that I picked we have

a nice foam velvet right here and individually I know these these items

are definitely over you know the value of what you're getting sort so it's a

good deal now so it's a blue plaid shirt with red blue or red and white plaid

shirt but enough we're trying all this stuff off so you guys can see well let's

go into some wild all right so these jeans right here these are the detailed

1961 jeans I know these jeans are retail like a

hundred plus dollars look at you see that 178 for these jeans right here

these are some good denim some real denim this isn't Levi's right these are

DL 1960 ones now this is an item that I actually alternated in the Box the style

profile had another pair of jeans but they weren't really a slim fit so I went

and picked a slimmer pants because that's how I like to wear them and then

let's keep going the shoes as well so the shoes I've altered them I think they

were like a gray and red with the red Puma sign and I just wanted to go with

the all grey with the gum sole I thought that would be a nice look but there was

other options on you know whether you know you wanted a different color shoe

which is pretty cool because you can alter these outfits you know a little

to your style preference and then the last item is the key item of this whole

box alright so right here it's a cardigan this is like a cardigan sweater

this thing is really thick is it's beautiful let's here look how nice this

thing is right here is there a price on here no I think I looked it up I'm see

if I can pull it up I looked it up and this item right here alone is like two

hundred and fifty dollars so this is the staple of the whole outfit but I'm gonna

try all the stuff on guys right now so what I want second alright guys here's

the outfit this is all the items together I really really like this

cardigan sweater is super thick very very comfortable this is the main item

of this box right here so what it's extremely comfortable they have the

jeans I probably have to get them altered a little bit just because I like

my jeans a little bit slimmer but then if you can see the shoes they go really

well they match really perfect with this outfit this was like I said the jeans

and the shoes were one of the items that I alternated but even the items that

they had selected for me we're good I just you wanted to switch it up just a

little bit and then you have the flannel underneath not really a big cardigan guy

but in this case I for some reason I did this this sweater really drew me to the

package which is why I decided to go with it but then this is the flannel

like you don't have to wear it all together you could just wear it like

this I mean the flan was really good they're both from velvet and then it's

one of my favorite items in this package as well is the v-neck the t-shirt

because it's so soft the material is great really really comfortable you

could just go out just like this the shows really like the Koons I like how

you're getting some shoes in the package you're really getting from head to toe

an outfit or two or three so this is from psycho bunny love love the box so I

mean I'm a big fan of it similarly the bomb fell similars dish makes kind of

like trendy brother it's like all the company's in one like the concept of the

box I don't think any other box is really doing what they're doing so you

know if you guys like it or don't like it let

me know in the comments they're pretty new company so they'll probably like the

feedback and so s a-15 is gonna say 50% off there's different levels to the

packages you know check the website out really cool website one of my favorite

things on the website is not only do they show you what's in the box but they

have like a video of a person you know kind of modeling it modeling the outfits

and walking around in like everyday life with the items also you can really get a

good sense of what they look like which is a little different than what I've

seen in the past so thank you guys for checking this video out man have

surfing's is king small my this has been the brain

and your brother's lie and already
