September Wrap Up 2018 - Duration: 8:47.

Hey everyone! I hope you're doing well.

Today I'll talk to you about the books I read during the month of September

and after that, of my favorites from the month of September.

I started listening to a series from C.J. Archer. I've read the first 3.

The 1st one is The Watchmaker's Daughter. The 2nd one is The Mapmaker's Apprentice.

And the 3rd one is The Apothecary's Poison.

There are still more books, but these were the only ones available to listen to.

So they're the ones I just finished listening to.

The series is set in 1890, where we follow a group of characters who are searching for a person with magic,

that will be able to cure a character's disease.

But we also have a relationship between 2 characters.

You can tell they have feelings for each other but they don't do anything about it.

And that's what is getting me the most, the romance, not so much the search for magic.

But I also love that it's set in the 19th century and that it involves magic.

The first and third books were the ones that hooked me the most.

I didn't feel there was much happening in the second one, but we get more magical characters and more rules about this world.

I gave 4 stars to the first and the third one. And I gave 3 stars to the second one.

Also, part of another trilogy, I listened to Binti by Nnedi Okorafor.

This is a very short sci-fi. It's about 200 pages long, the audiobook was 2 hours long.

Being so short, I felt everything happened very fast, the conflict and the solution.

And I feel this world the author created could have been explored more deeply.

Which would have made me feel more involved in this story, this world and this character.

But what I really loved was the main idea which lands on themes of racism and prejudice.

I feel these books were made more for their message than for the story per se.

We follow a girl from a tribe who gets a scholarship for a university to which no one from her tribe has been able to go before.

And when she gets out of her planet to attend said university, it's when things start happening.

Issues she has to deal with from the moment she leaves.

But there are 2 more books about this story and, honestly, I don't know if I'll read or listen to them.

Maybe I will, because they're so short. But it's not that it hooked me so much as to wanting to know what happens next.

So I gave it 3 stars.

Golden Son by Pierce Brown is the 2nd book from the saga of Red Rising.

And since it's the second book I can't talk much about it without spoiling it.

But I can tell you that I enjoyed it even more than the first one.

Because I felt I got used to the writing style from this author. For sometimes it makes me feel like I skipped chapters.

Because he sets a situation where it looks like something is going to happen,

and suddenly in the next chapter it's already in the middle of the action or even after it happened.

So it takes a while to get used to that writing style.

We have new characters and some old characters from the first book, who were my favorites.

I was surprised by how much it made me laugh. He knows how to mix comedy with drama and action.

And I gave it 4.5 stars on Goodreads.

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith is the 4th book from the Cormoran Strike series.

This one presents a new crime which Cormoran and Robin will have to investigate to solve the mystery.

And we keep following the character's development. I can't say more because I don't want to spoil you.

But what I can say is that Rowling is a master in seeing the whole picture.

When she wrote Harry Potter, she started by defining the ending. Which I feel is the best way to write a book.

That way you know each detail you have to show throughout the book.

And it can tell in this book, well in everyone of the books from this saga.

Because, when you get to the conflict's solution, you notice every single clue she left behind.

And that's just genius from her part. And it's something I enjoy a lot from her books.

I gave this one 4.5 stars.

I listened to the audiobook of The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn.

We're nearing Halloween and Día de Muertos, so I wanted to start with spookier reads.

This is a thriller, which actually reminded me a lot of The Girl on the Train.

We follow a girl who suffers from agoraphobia. So she lives through what she sees through her window.

And we'll follow a mystery she gets to see. And also the reason for her agoraphobia.

In general, I felt it lacked a faster pace, more suspense, so it could hook you up more.

During the whole book I was considering giving it 2.5 stars,

because it wasn't achieving what I wanted from a mystery book.

And the writing style made some of the mysteries to solve too obvious,

and once they were revealed they weren't surprising because it looked like they had been revealed before.

However, the ending, the true plot twist was amazing. And I feel that saved the book entirely.

So I ended up giving it 3 starts.

The last book I read in September was Emma by Jane Austen, which was a buddy-read.

Actually, I read it throughout the whole month of September.

Because with classics I feel it's best to take it slower

so you can appreciate this contemplative writing style, slower paced.

Emma is divided in 3 volumes. And I felt the 1st volume was really slow.

And because it describes so much the life style from that time, there are bits that feel unnecessary.

But Jane Austen's humor makes it easier to read, because she's so ironic and really funny.

So they can be talking about how to avoid getting a cold in a walk, but some comment will still make you laugh.

I did feel it was too long for what it was. It's about 400 pages long, so I think it could have been shorter.

In this book Emma gives herself the job of match-maker.

And she tries to pair up everybody, but she sucks in noticing other people's feelings.

So she keeps failing. And she doesn't even know her own feelings.

That element was one of the funniest because she chose her hobby very poorly.

Because she doesn't know how to do it.

But it's what gives it the funny tone to the whole story. And I gave it 3 stars.

Those were all the books I read during this month. My favorites were Lethal White,

Golden Son and The Watchmaker's Daughter.

I also wanted to talk to you about a tv show I watched this month

which came out last year, so probably many of you have already seen it.

But it's the first time I see it and I loved it, I'm obsessed with this show.

And that is Dark. It's on Netflix.

It's one of those mind-blowing series. I can't tell you exactly what's it about or I would spoil it for you.

A lot of people are comparing it to Stranger Things. But I thing the only thing it could compare to it's

the atmosphere it develops in. Involving these dark scenes in the woods.

In Stranger Things we follow some kids and in this one we follow a group of teenagers.

And the cast for this series is perfect! It's one of the things that lately have been taken more carefully in movies and series

because, usually, when they put 2 people as siblings they didn't look anything alike.

But lately they have been taking more care of it, and now you believe the fact they're family.

The second season has been confirmed so you have time to catch up with it if you haven't seen it. I really recommend it.

It's in German, so it's not one of those you can put as background without paying attention

because you have to read the subtitles, if you don't know German.

Unless you'd prefer to watch it dubbed to your language. But I always recommend watching everything in its original language with subtitles.

Another of my favorites from this month was a podcast called Binge Mode.

They're doing their 3rd season, dedicated to Harry Potter. The whole universe of Harry Potter.

In each episode they talk about 5 chapters from the books.

It's very thorough, they analyze every chapter of the books.

And once they finished analyzing the whole book, they also talk about the movie.

What they like, what they don't, what they cut out..

And as I said, they include the whole universe. From the original Harry Potter ones, to Fantastic Beasts, movies and all.

And that's all for today's video. Thanks for watching, see you in the next one. Bye!
