Answers to various health-related questions and to the layman it can be pretty hard to tell the difference
between sound medical advice and downright dangerous

Today, I just wanted to shed some light on some of the bothersome stuff
I've noticed on social media and that is dodgy medical advice
A recent research by North-Western University found that just 18% of
Cosmetic procedures posted online are from certified professionals
18% percent. That means there's a high chance that a lot of what you seen on the explore page isn't legitimate
I mean
I would never recommend undergoing any sort of medical treatment purely based on social media posts to be honest
I don't think any health professional would
so I
Decided to make this video to let you know some of the red flags to look out for when looking up medical advice online
okay, first of all and most
importantly, you need to understand that you simply cannot get all the information you need from someone's Instagram feed whether it's about
a medical procedure or drug
Social media can not answer questions like what happens during surgery?
how long does recovery take? what side effects should one be wary of and these are questions that should be directed at a
professional so speak to your GP or pharmacist for guidance
for example, if a random person pops up in your Instagram feed and says something weird like oh
This product helps you lose 30 kilograms in one week
Hold up! You need to be skeptical about testimonials like that
For one why would you want to lose 30 kilograms in a week?
like it took you that long to gain that much weight and
two, do you really want to take something that you're not sure about how it's going to affect your body chemistry?
Let's be careful
Please and be wary of products claiming to deliver results in short periods
If you want a banging body, it does not take a week
You have to have a routine. You have to exercise you have to go on a diet and really just enjoy the process
One of the most obvious signs that a provider might not be certified are the hashtag
They use for example a surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation
is most likely not going to advertise
breast enhancement surgery using #boobjob
That is so not professional a surgeon would most likely use hashtag breast
augmentation to advertise and that is if they use any hashtag at all
like I stated earlier to be skeptical about
Unrealistic testimonials. You also need to be skeptical about unrealistic captions
be wary of
Before-and-after pictures with really short timelines whether it is a product
cosmetic or drug you need to understand that the body is going through changes and it takes time a
Professional with state in details what the patient should do to ensure a smooth healing process as well as provide a realistic
timeline if a social media post does not mention or list any post treatment steps and
Instead just shows you before-and-after pic without a concise account of what happened in-between and after
then that is a red flag, so
You've found this product or procedure or
cosmetic that you're interested in and as a potential patient you try to begin a
Conversation with the provider and then you observe that this provider is avoiding your important questions
Like what does this procedure involve?
How long will it take to heal? or how does this drug or
Cosmetic work? Now that is a clear sign that they should be avoided
You see a professional would address all questions on the chosen procedure,
drug, or
Product accordingly and this is because we are transparent about our facts
another red flag that you might notice
when Interacting with these providers is that they assure you that the product or procedure is risk-free
Now that is not true because in any medical procedure or with any product or cosmetic
there's always a risk involved. Even if it is relatively small
So that's my important information to share with you today on how to spot unreliable medical advice on
social media
it is vital you do some serious and thorough research that goes beyond scrolling through your
Instagram feed and even if it is the real deal it is very unlikely that they would list their full
Credentials on every post so it is up to you to look into what option best suits your needs
Find out what qualifications and accreditation that professional has
Find out if it's relevant for the procedure
you want
find out their experience and background, what other patients are saying about this professional and
Where you can find
reliable reviews about this professional
Next you would have to meet with this professional in person and discuss extensively
Before signing up to anything. As a patient, You should ask all of the right questions
Before committing to any procedure and not rely on any single source of information when making a decision
That can impact your health
