Chords with muted strings on the guitar

Hi ! In this video I'll show you how to play chords with muted strings on the guitar

this is extremely common : most of the chords we play don't have all the 6 strings

but there are a few, like this open E

for most of these chords, we won't be able to avoid the strings with the pick, so we'll have to mute them

and we'll mute them with the left hand : let me explain how to do it

a very famous chord is the C chord : the low E string must be muted

there are different ways to achieve it : usually we let the ring finger touch the low E string will fretting the A string

bingo ! we don't have to avoid the low E string with the pick

another solution I like is to use the thumb (not easy for small hands)

for every chord we'll have to find tricks to mute strings

let's take another chord : Em with a barré chord

the low E string must not be played. Yes, for a Em it still sounds good, but not for a Fm

we'll have to let the index finger go up a bit to make it mute the low E string

voilà !

with the unmuted E string :

now, a E7, 7th fret

the high and low E strings must be muted

the low E string with the thumb or with the ring finger (like the previous C chord)

and the high E string with as many fingers as possible (use the "Jimi Hendrix" position of the hand, it will help)

personnaly I mute it with the ring finger and the index finger (2 fingers muting the same string)

it may seem easy but it's not !

It won't work at the first try. Do it, then check string by string if the sound is ok

now, harder, with a Em and a B7 on only 3 strings

like that (but with muted strings)

here is a possibility : the thumb mutes the 2 low strings (E and A) and the index finger touches the high E string

let's try something else

my index was muting all the string with the Em, but then I had to change the hand position so it's not so good

try other fingerings to see the ones you prefer

the first fingering was the best to me, but it's up to you and to your hand

and now, a longer rhythmic part

quite a lot of strings to mute for the Dm and Dm/C

and the Bb/D

last tip : you'll sometimes make harmonics ring when muting strings

here is an example for Em : the harmonic of the low E string rings

for a reggae rhythm :

2 possibilities to make it stop : muting the string somewhere else where the harmonic doesn't ring

other possibility : using a scrunchie !

I'll put it somewhere where it stops the harmonic from ringing

here it's ok (well, almost)

so I move it (still some ringing)

now it's ok !

I try to spread it on the strings, and I have a system to make it tight or loose

this is what many studio musicians do ! Some play with a very distorted sound : they have to use scrunchies to get a clean sound (for tapping for example)

beeing able to mute the right strings is useful in any style of music : funk, gypsy jazz, jazz, rock, blues, pop, reggae...

I hope this video will help you achieving it ! Check the other video I made on a similar subject : "playing with a clean sound"

Evanescence News: "Sally Song's: Nightmare Revisited" (CC) - Duration: 8:14.

This month marks 10 years of the premiere of "Sally Song" under the voice of Amy Lee for the album "The Nightmare before Christmas"

along with a powerful piano and a new instrument that paved the way for more classic and dark sounds.

And in this episode, we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of this version performed by Amy Lee.

On September 30, 2008 Walt Disney Records published Nightmare Revisited

a collection of versions and new recordings inspired by Tim Burton's film "The Nightmare before Christmas".

Various bands and soloists contributed to the development of new versions for each song

musical artists such as Korn, Marilyn Manson, Tiger Army, among others.

And Amy Lee did not stay out, since "Sally Song's" was the song chosen to be remastered again

song that was originally sung in the movie by Catherine O'Hara and adapted once before by Fiona Apple

for the 2006 edited album of the soundtrack.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (in Spanish America, The strange world of Jack)

is a 1993 American film directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton

performed using the Stop Motion technique.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in the United States on October 29, 1993 and was produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

After the successful passage through the big screen, the emotive, dramatic and audiovisual technique sense,

He left an indelible mark on our memories, becoming a film for adults and children.

After all the success and awards that the film had, it fell back into the hands of Walt Disney,

and in 2008 the edition Nightmare Revisited was released (tribute disc to the film)

Which includes new versions of the soundtrack performed by other artists.

Amy Lee was one of the chosen ones to interpret a beautiful ballad in piano and harp next to the musical producer Will B. Hunt

adapting to new version of "Sally's Song", whose recording took place between June and August 2008 in Fort Worth, Texas,

as Amy indicated in an interview for Spin in October 2008.

This is one of the first forays into music for soundtracks and that could have earned Amy

a springboard to pave your longed for dream of creating music for movies.

In EvClub Amy told that she had been given complete creative control to recreate the song.

In the words of Amy Lee: "I went to the studio of my good friend Will B. Hunt in Fort Worth, Texas,

He is a very creative producer and drummer, and we had a lot of fun with that.

I decided to take my new incipient skill and play the harp on the track. "

He ends the statement informing that he performs the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on October 13 along with bassist Tim McCord.

The CD includes the trailer of the film and 20 tracks re-recorded for the standard version and 22 for the Japanese version.

Amy Lee performed "Sally's Song" live twice. During the premiere of "Nightmare Before Christmas" 3D in Hollywood (October 17, 2008)

in the introduction of the film and where Danny Elfman, the writer of the soundtrack

He was present and praised Amy saying that "he had interpreted the song perfectly".

The second occasion was on the television program The Tonight Show (on October 13 of the same year).

Today we celebrate 10 years since this beautiful version was premiered and performed live

where we enjoyed a new facet of Amy Lee for the first time playing the harp.

What do you think of this new version of "Sally Song's" ?. Do you think Amy gave a new musical twist to her career, after playing this song for a movie?

Accused of Being Unfaithful for the Whole Relationship (Full Episode) | Paternity Court - Duration: 16:42.

You may be seated.

Hello, Your Honor.

Good morning, Ron.

This is the case o Baylor v. Earls.

Thank you.

Good day, everyone.

AUDIENCE: Good day.

Miss Baylor, you petitioned the court for a DNA test.

You want to prove to your ex-fiance, Mr. Earls

that he fathered your three-year-old son, Marcus Junior.

Is that correct?

Yes, Your Honor.

You say Mr. Earls called off your wedding

just three months prior to getting married because of his paternity doubts?

Yes, Your Honor.

JUDGE LAKE: Mr. Earls,

you and Miss Baylor have been together

since you were 17 years old,

and you believe she's been unfaithful

the entire relationship.

EARLS: Yes, Your Honor.

Today, you're counter-suing Miss Baylor for a lie detector test

because you want the entire truth.

Yes, Your Honor.

All right. Miss Baylor, what have Mr. Earls' accusations and denial

done to your relationship?

Your Honor, his accusations have ruined our relationship.

It has tore us apart.

We have been together since I was 17, and he moved in with us,

and then we had two beautiful daughters,

and then after our third child,

we decided that we wanted to get married.

And he called off the wedding three months before we got married.

JUDGE LAKE: Really?

And we planned everything.

I had everything picked out, Your Honor.

I had a dress. He bought me a ring. Everything...

Our wedding day was supposed to be 12, 13, 14.

Like, that was so significant.

And it really hurt me for him to do that, Your Honor.

Can I submit this to you?

What is that?

This is my wedding planner.

I had everything...

JUDGE LAKE: May I see that, Ron?

BAILIFF: Yes, ma'am.

So you really planned an entire wedding?

Yes.

You had three children with this man...

BAYLOR: Yes, Your Honor.

...and I can see that really hurts you.

It hurts, like, so bad

for him to not think that my son is his.

Like, I don't know where these rumors came from,

I don't know who started them,

I don't know anything. I love Mr. Earls.

I wanna spend the rest of my life with him.

He's a beautiful little boy. So, Mr. Earls...

Yes, Your Honor.

You certain this child is not yours?

I'm certain. I'm 100% sure that that is not my baby.

So, this had to be really serious

for you to call off the wedding just three months before.

It was very serious.

What happened?

I went away on August 16,

and Sondra came and visited me,

two weeks after I was gone.

Uh, and she gave me some news that she was pregnant.

Okay, I was excited...

Come to find out a week later, she visited me again,

and she tells me, "I stepped out on you

"a month prior to the time you had left."

A month before I got pregnant with my son,

I did step out on the relationship. I did.

This was nowhere near the conception date.

This was a whole month before I conceived.

And when I told Mr. Earls that I was pregnant,

you know, he was happy, you know? We were both happy,

because we had two miscarriages before that.

Unexplained, you know?

And it devastated us, we wanted a baby. We planned to have my son.

And when he went away,

he just feels that, you know, the dates don't add up.

I suppose.

We didn't plan anything.

Okay, do you know what month you cheated in, Miss Baylor?

July.

Sure was.

Because I got pregnant in August.

I got pregnant August 14.

Let me go to my conception calculator here so I can understand this.

When was Marcus Jr. born?

He was born April 22, 2013.

JUDGE LAKE: Okay, now if we calculate the date of his birth,

your conception date would've been...

(JUDGE LAKE READING)

Yeah, but he's supposed to be premature.

That's about a ten-day window.

That's when you said you cheated.

I cheated in July, yes, Your Honor,

but that is not when I conceived.

My son was due May 7,

but I had a C-section due to...

I had two other kids,

my blood pressure goes up when I go into labor,

and I had to have a C-section.

That's why he was born April 22.

Miss Baylor, you're saying the baby was born early.

And so, your conception date

would actually have been later than what is projected here.

Yes.

Mr. Earls, do you think the baby was born early?

No, that baby wasn't born early.

She carried that baby full-term.

That is not true, Your Honor.

You don't know no baby

premature at six pound, nine ounces.

I know, that's a big baby.

(AUDIENCE LAUGHS)

I do agree. A six pound, nine ounce baby?

I mean that is a... That's a full-term weight.

EARLS: Yeah!

Exactly, because I was due May 7,

I had a C-section which was scheduled at 38 weeks.

Our daughters weigh five pound, seven ounces,

five pound, eight ounces, and they was full-term.

All babies are not gonna be born the same weight.

All my babies is.

No, they're not. No, they are not, because...

We're not going to get into that, because we're here to prove that my son

is your son.

EARLS: He is not my son.

BAYLOR: That is your son.

EARLS: Look, she carried him full-term.

She cheated on me in July, the time adds up.

She brought me all the way down.

I just want her to tell me the truth.

I wanna understand why you are cheating in the relationship.

I just felt like he was still lying to me.

EARLS: She couldn't close her legs.

So you... Who was this person you cheated with?

His sister's cousin.

So, this was a one-night thing?

A fling? What happened?

It was a fling, maybe. But not that long.

Just a couple of times and, like, that was it.

A couple too many.

But I used protection when I stepped out, unlike him.

He has two other kids outside of our relationship...

...that he stepped out on me on plenty of times.

I do. I do.

She cheated on me with the cable man.

No, I did not cheat on him with the cable man.

He was a friend.

Wait, when did the cable man get in it?

As soon as I went away, the cable man came in.

He was a friend. He took me to get my kids something to eat one day,

and we went to go play pool and have a few beers at the bar,

and I "cheated," supposedly.

My brother also even told me about some things.

What did your brother tell you?

Oh, my brother told me he caught her doing

mysterious things on her phone,

talking to others, talking about she wanna

meet up with them, and things.

We have your brother joining us today from your hometown.

That's good!

JUDGE LAKE: Mr. Earls...

Can you hear me?

Yes, ma'am.

Your brother has testified that you've caught Miss Baylor

in some very, uh, questionable circumstances. Is that true?

Yes, ma'am. About three weeks before, prior,

before my brother went away,

I caught Miss Baylor texting another dude

talking about how she wanna have sex with him.

The dude's picture kept popping up on the phone.

Miss Baylor?

Yes, I do flirt a lot.

I do. I flirt a lot.

Oh, God. Yeah, yeah.

More than a lot.

EARLS: Yeah, more than a lot.

BAYLOR: That is a lie.

But you were on the phone texting a guy.

BAYLOR: Yes, I was,

but Marcus has done me so much worse.

Mr. Earls, do you know anything else?

Uh, about two weeks after my bro went away,

we was having a get-together at the house,

and she was drinking, having a good time.

Next thing I know she burnt off,

and didn't come back till the next day.

She came home the next day?

PAUL: Yes, ma'am.

Who did you see her leave with, Mr. Earls?

A dude!

I left with my cousin,

and that's probably who he's seen me leave with, my cousin.

EARLS: That ain't her cousin.

Judge, she's a compulsive liar.

All right, Mr. Earls, thank you so much for your testimony today.

Yes, ma'am.

So, Mr. Earls, you say she just lies.

Yes, Your Honor.

JUDGE LAKE: And that's why you asked the court

to administer a lie-detector test.

Yes, Your Honor.

Oh, I just had a light bulb,

'cause I'm thinking to myself,

he is so mad at her for cheating,

and it is wrong,

but you were cheating, and you got two children outside the relationship,

but what you're most angry at, you're saying,

"You told me the truth, that you cheated,"

but you feel like she's making up this whole story

about the baby being early,

'cause she doesn't wanna admit that it's a possibility

that this other guy is the father.

She's in denial, Your Honor.

JUDGE LAKE: That's what's making you most angry?

Yes, ma'am.

So, when you found out she cheated

did you immediately have doubt?

Yes, I already knew like, it already...

It clicked to me. I was insecure.

JUDGE LAKE: What clicked?

That she cheated and that's his baby.

May I submit my evidence?

Absolutely. What did you bring for the court?

It's just the picture to show everybody in this court room

that this is not my...

Let me see that.

That is not my son.

You're presenting to the court...

...a side by side photo.

On the left-hand side is Marcus Jr.

EARLS: Correct.

JUDGE LAKE: And on the right-hand side...

Is a picture of you.

EARLS: Yes, Your Honor.

You don't believe you don't look anything alike.

EARLS: Nothing alike.

Okay, I have a question,

how did the baby get the name Marcus Jr.

then, if you never thought?

I felt bad. I always wanted a son.

I wanted a son with her.

I felt bad. I mean she crying in a hospital laid up

with her guts out on her belly.

So, I was like, yeah, you could give him my name.

BAYLOR: Your Honor...

JUDGE LAKE: So, wait a minute.

You seem like a strong-minded young man.

EARLS: Yes, I am.

How did you get to the hospital and decide,

"Okay, I'm gonna give this baby my last name as my Jr.

"and I don't believe he's mine."

That's, man, I can... Look, I don't know.

I just know I made a mistake.

Did you sign the birth certificate?

EARLS: I signed it.

You signed the birth certificate?

When you signed that birth certificate,

you acknowledged paternity, you understand that right?

Well, hopefully, this DNA can help me out.

You know black women like to put people on child support,

I ain't got time for that.

BAYLOR: You're not gonna pay...

Hold on!

Hold on, 'cause I'm a black woman.

No. No. Well, certain ones.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Your Honor.

JUDGE LAKE: Hold on!

Sorry, Your Honor.

JUDGE LAKE: Hold on!

Sorry, Your Honor.

Now we, look...

We get to the truth in this court room.

Okay.

JUDGE LAKE: Hold on!

Let's get something straight.

EARLS: Yeah, I'm back up...

It's women of all races and colors

that are receiving child support for children.

But let me be clear

the child support is for the child.

EARLS: Yeah.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUDS)

BAYLOR: Exactly.

And then let me be even clearer, you did this.

Once you sign that birth certificate,

you were responsible for child support.

So, don't come into my court room

talking about what a black woman gonna do

'cause this black woman gonna let you know.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUDS)

Now, I'm really ready for the results.

EARLS: Sorry.

Ron, hand me the lie detector results first.

Your Honor.

You were asked during the last ten years,

other than the one time you admitted to cheating,

have you had sexual intercourse

with another man?

You answered, "Yes."

The lie detector determined that was the truth.

That's because we split up.

Yeah.

Within that, we split up.

A lot of times, we split up.

Ms. Baylor, we asked you,

did you have sexual intercourse

with the man you admitted

to cheating on Marcus with more than one time.

You answered, "Yes."

Wow.

The lie detector determined that was the truth.

Wow.

I just mentioned that here, I've nothing to hide. I mentioned that.

Mr. Earls, you seem surprised.

She did testify in court today

that it was kind of a fling. It was more than one time.

Yeah, well, that ain't what I've been hearing

for the last three years.

JUDGE LAKE: So, you're saying

even though it was determined

that she was telling the truth,

the answer she gave to the questions are different

from what's she's been telling you?

Yes, Your Honor.

And that's why you called off the wedding.

That's exactly why I called off the wedding.

To be a man that's always wanted a son,

to be excited about it,

to go in the hospital, to give this child your name,

to sign the birth certificate

to be legally responsible for the child,

why is it, you haven't

been able to... It seems like you've done everything else.

I wanna give him the opportunity to know his father.

He knows his father for the...

I grew up without a father, okay?

I've been here for him, okay?

But I wanna give him that opportunity.

If you're not the child's biological father,

is this relationship over? Where do you go from here?

It's over, she, she, look, that lie detector test...

She passed it cause I mean,

I already knew she was lying to me all this whole time, anyway.

She passed it though.

You said the relationship is over

if Marcus Jr. is not your biological child.

EARLS: Correct.

But you had two children outside the relationship, and she stayed with you.

EARLS: She did, Your Honor.

Ms. Baylor, what are you thinking right now?

What are you feeling?

I feel that it is so unfair because...

I've been with him for so long.

I'm the one who's been there,

but he can have babies by other women,

and then always run off to them

but you wanna leave me?

But my son is his. They look so much alike.

You can tell, like, I wanna be with Mr. Earls

for the rest of my life. I love him.

He's the only man I know since...

17 years old. I was young.

Like, he is all I know.

JUDGE LAKE: If Marcus Jr. is not Mr. Earls' biological child,

where do you go from here?

I mean, I would love to be with him

but I can't make somebody stay if they don't wanna stay.

Even though, I did step out, yes,

but I was there for him.

All right. Well, I have the results.

Let's get to the truth.

In the case of Baylor v. Earls Sr.

When it comes to three-year-old

Marcus Earls Jr.,

it has been determined by this court...

Mr. Earls, you...

...are the father.

I told you.

I told you.

I have my doubts, I have my insecurity.

But I do love that little man.

JUDGE LAKE: And I'm sure he loves you too.

You're the only man he knows as his father?

EARLS: The only one.

Then does it hurt you in this moment that you did

carry that doubt for three, four years of...

Yeah, that's what's killing me right now.

I'm sorry, and I'm sorry to you too.

I'm sorry, too.

JUDGE LAKE: This is...

...a time for you to stand up and be the man,

the best man you can be.

You're right, Your Honor.

When you give a child your name,

there's a responsibility in that,

because when he looks to the example

of who he can be in this world,

his first point of reference

is gonna be the man that has his name.

So that means, it's time for you

to create that life so your son

can have a life he can emulate.

That's how you break the cycle.

That's how you make sure he doesn't end up

in the places where you've been.

If you all are gonna build a family,

or try to figure this thing out,

you got to set a proper foundation.

All this sleeping around outside the relationship...

No, no, no.

It's time to pull that all together.

Talk through it,

because I can tell you do both love one another very much.

I do love him.

I do love her.

JUDGE LAKE: And love is worth fighting for.

EARLS: Yes, it is.

Go fight it out in a good way this time, together.

Court is adjourned.

The Real Reason Netflix Is Cancelling OITNB - Duration: 4:14.

Orange Is the New Black fans were shocked when it was announced that the hit series

would end after its seventh season.

Why did Netflix cancel the show?

Here are some of the reasons the media giant may have felt it was time to end its relationship

with the ladies of Litchfield.

The faces behind the popular Netflix series have always known that the show couldn't

go on forever.

In Orange Is the New Black's cancellation announcement, Cindy Holland, Vice President

of Original Content for Netflix, remarked on the show and its many beloved characters,

saying:

"Every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time."

Series creator Jenji Kohan hinted at the beginning of the end during a 2017 interview with The

New York Times, saying,

"I haven't made a final decision yet, but I'm leaning toward ending it after [season]

seven, although the nature of the show is one that can go on and on because you can

bring in new people."

Kohan also revealed that she'd already formed an idea about how the series would end, but

remained tight-lipped about its finale.

When Orange Is the New Black debuted on Netflix in 2013, a large number of its stars were

relatively unknown at the time.

But as the show took off, so did the careers of its cast members.

Since starring as prisoner Maritza Ramos, actress Diane Guerrero has made huge strides

in her professional life, scoring featured roles in shows like Jane the Virgin, Superior

Donuts, and even being cast as Crazy Jane in the upcoming Doom Patrol series.

Actress Samira Wiley's career opportunities have also multiplied thanks to her role on

the show.

After playing the much beloved Poussey Washington on Orange is the New Black, Wiley snagged

a role in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, playing Moira - a once-in-a-lifetime role that scored

her an Emmy nomination and subsequent win in 2018.

While snagging a role on Orange is the New Black was certainly a precursor for great

things to come, these once-unknown actors might be ready to move on to bigger and better

opportunities.

Considering Orange Is the New Black is set in a prison, producers have an easy way to

explain characters entering and exiting the show.

However, there's more to making and sustaining a series than just good casting.

According to Wired, Netflix has been cracking down on its shows and trimming away series

that either cost too much to produce or simply no longer live up to the hype.

As noted by Angela Watercutter:

"Now that other streaming services are competing with Netflix for Emmys and Golden Globes,

Netflix's margin of error is even smaller."

Orange is the New Black isn't the only Netflix series that's been canceled.

Marvel's Iron Fist and Luke Cage also got the axe in October 2018.

It appears Netflix is getting picky about how it spends its money.

"Sorry, kiddo.

Talk to our rep."

It's an unfortunate reality that older shows must end in order to make room for new shows.

This also could've been a contributing factor in Netflix's decision to terminate Orange

Is the New Black, as the brains behind the streaming service are certainly thinking of

its future programs.

In 2017, showrunner Shonda Rhimes of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With

Murder fame, secured a four-year, $150 million deal with Netflix, and has plans for at least

eight shows with the video on demand service.

Similarly, Deadline reported that Ryan Murphy has also locked down a deal with Netflix.

According to reports, the man behind the TV hits Glee, American Horror Story, and Feud,

signed a five-year contract with the streaming service that could earn him up to $300 million.

With Orange is the New Black's cancellation, Netflix's top dogs can now focus on producing

new content with big-name talent.

Spoiler alert!

While fans of Orange is the New Black may not want the series to ever end, its cancellation

could not have come at a better time for the show.

As noted by Vulture, the sixth season of Orange is the New Black ended with its main character,

Piper Chapman, getting released from prison early.

The show's final season could presumably follow Piper as she readjusts to life on the outside

and prepares for her incarcerated fiancée to be released after serving her own sentence.

And while there's definitely more to learn about all of the series' characters, showrunners

could very well be able to effectively wrap up those individual stories now that one inevitable

event of the series has finally played out.

So what's to come in the show's final season?

Will Taystee spend the rest of her life in prison for a crime she didn't commit?

Will Blanca be deported?

Considering the seventh and final season is set to be released on Netflix in 2019, fans

of Orange is the New Black will have to hold their breath just a little longer.

The Strange History Of The Lost City Of Atlantis - Duration: 5:23.

Atlantis!

The name alone invokes images of mermaids, sunken ruins, and ancient, technologically

advanced civilizations.

Most of that is poppycock, but the true story of Atlantis is almost as weird.

So what do Nazis have to do with this mythological lost civilization?

Here's a look at the strange history of Atlantis.

Plato

To understand the origins of Atlantis, you need to know a little about the Greek philosopher

Plato.

The best known and most influential philosopher of all time, Plato often used allegorical

stories to convey meaning, and roughly 2400 years ago he came up with a humdinger of a

story: the lost city of Atlantis.

In Plato's original story, Atlantis was a powerful, advanced country on a huge land

mass somewhere west of Europe.

But then, some 9,000 years before Plato's time, the Atlanteans became warlike, displeasing

the gods, who sank Atlantis beneath the waves with a series of earthquakes.

It's widely assumed that Plato was speaking completely allegorically when he wrote of

Atlantis.

But Plato did also have a habit of drawing on legends from ancient Egypt as well, so

it's possible the legend pre-dates Plato.

Either way, within just a couple generations plenty of literal minded people were believing

that Atlantis was a totally real place.

It's not a real place

For centuries, there was no consensus among scholars whether Atlantis was real or not.

But after Columbus accidentally ended up in the Americas in 1492, the idea that Atlantis

might have been real began to take off, with some Europeans believing that the advanced

Mayan civilization was proof that they were descended from ancient Atlantis.

In 1882, a book called Atlantis: The Antediluvian World by Ignatius Donnelly took things one

step further by suggesting that Atlantis was actually the secret birthplace of all humanity.

The book was a smash hit, prompting a worldwide search for the true location of Atlantis.

Shockingly, nobody has ever actually found it.

Artistic license

Donnelly's book, along with the classic 1870 novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, helped

spark an Atlantis fad throughout arts and literature, one that has never really subsided.

From the 1899 novel The Lost Continent: The Story of Atlantis, to recent works like Artemis

Fowl, Atlantis has been a staple of literature and television for generations.

Not to mention film.

The first four movies to feature Atlantis were all adaptations of the 1919 novel Atlantida,

which proposed the novel twist that Atlantis was actually in the middle of the Sahara,

an idea that has carried over to modern films like Aquaman.

"We're getting close now."

"Oh yeah?

Close to what, dying of thirst?

There's no way Atlantis was this far inland."

And there have been dozens of movies where characters visit Atlantis, including Disney's

2001 feature Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Most importantly, in 1994, MacGyver found Atlantis in a TV movie.

"I want treasure!

AHHHHHHHH!"

And Atlantis is also the home of superheroes Namorthe Sub-Mariner and Aquaman, ensuring

the mythical city will remain relevant well into the 21st century.

Nazis are dumb

Atlantis isn't the only mythical lost civilization swallowed by the sea.

There's also the lost city of Ys, not to mention Hy-Brasil, which was supposedly an island

off the coast of Ireland and has nothing to do with the actual Brazil.

"Hy-Brasil is sinking!"

"Well now now, I think we're fine.

It's all a question of what you want to believe in, and I happen to, and I happen

to have more experience in these matters than you do…"

But outside of Atlantis, the most important is Lemuria.

See, at one point, someone realized there were once lemurs on both sides of the Indian

ocean.

So they figured the most obvious explanation must be a lost continent in the middle of

the ocean that was once home to a bunch of lemurs.

Don't laugh, though, because Lemuria is very serious business, especially for Nazis.

Remember how the Nazis in Indiana Jones are always obsessed with the occult?

Well, turns out that was actually true, and Lemuria and Atlantis both play key roles.

See, a lot of Nazi philosophy is based in the occult writings of Russian circus performer

Madame H.P.

Blavatsky.

She wrote a book called The Secret Doctrine, which she claimed was dictated in Atlantis

itself, and which detailed the seven root races of humanity, in order of their development:

One: Invisible jellyfish

Two: Hyperboreans, who lived at the North Pole but did not have bodies

Three: Egg-laying lemurs of lost Lemuria

Four: The Atlanteans

Five: The Aryans, of course

Six and Seven: Nobody's sure yet, but when they arrive, they will definitely live on

Venus.

So Nazi philosophy is based on the idea that Aryans are a master race descended from the

Hyperborean ancestors of Atlantis, not to mention invisible jellyfish and imaginary

lemurs.

Hey, nobody ever said Nazis were the sharpest tools in the shed.

Science vs. Aquaman

Sorry, fans of Atlantis - and lemur-people - but science has pretty much debunked the

whole idea of a lost continent in the Atlantic.

You can thank geology and modern seafloor mapping technology for that.

According to LiveScience, we now know enough about plate tectonics to know that it is impossible

for a large land mass to have sunk to the sea floor within human history.

"Plate tectonics!!"

Plus, there has never been a recorded earthquake anywhere near strong enough to sink a continent-sized

land mass.

Sorry, Aquaman, but look on the bright side: if you need a new home, you can always crash

at Sea World.

"I dig it."
