The National for Friday, October 26, 2018 — Pipe Bombs Arrest, Sherman Investigation, Surrogacy Laws - Duration: 46:38.

>> Adrienne: ON THIS FRIDAY

NIGHT

--

>> THESE ARE NOT HOAX DEVICES.

>> Adrienne: UNDER ARREST.

THE MAN POLICE SAY MAILED BOMBS

TO

THE OPPONENTS OF TRUMP.

>> Andrew: WHAT THEY ARE

OFFERING

IN EXCHANGE FOR INFORMATION AND

WHAT TORONTO POLICE SAY IN

RESPONSE.

>> TO BE CLEAR, WE DON'T THINK

THERE'S A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM.

>> Adrienne: CANADIAN TELECOS

ARE

CALLED TO ACCOUNT AFTER A CBC

NEWS

INVESTIGATION, WHAT YOUR SERVICE

PROVIDERS TOLD THE C.R.T.C.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

FULL OF INTOLERANCE, EMBOLDENED

BY

HATEFUL RHETORIC.

THE DETAILS ARE EMERGING ABOUT

THE

MAN ACCUSED OF MAILING BOMBS TO

PROMINENT DEMOCRATIC FIGURES IN

THE

UNITED STATES.

HE IS A REGISTERED REPUBLICAN

AND A

BIG FAN OF THE U.S. PRESIDENT.

>> YEAH, WE JUST TOOK HIM INTO

CUSTODY.

>> Adrienne: THE SUSPECT

ARRESTED

IN FLORIDA IS CESAR SAYOC,

CHARGED

WITH ILLEGAL MAILING OF

EXPLOSIVES,

THREATENING A FORMER PRESIDENT.

IF CONVICTED HE WOULD FACE UP TO

48

YEARS IN PRISON BUT THE DANGER

FOR

THE PUBLIC MAY NOT BE OVER JUST

YET.

>> TODAY'S ARREST DOESN'T MEAN

WE

ARE OUT OF THE WOODS.

THERE MAY BE OTHER PACKAGES IN

TRANSIT NOW.

>> Adrienne: JUST TODAY MORE

SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES WERE

INTERCEPTED WHILE EN ROUTE TO

THREE

MORE OPPONENTS TO THE U.S.

PRESIDENT MAKING IT A TOTAL OF

14

PROMINENT DEMOCRATS TARGETED SO

FAR

BY THE BOMB MAKER.

SO WHO IS CESAR SAYOC?

LYNDSAY DUNCOMBE TAKES A CLOSER

LOOK.

>> Reporter: BY MANY ACCOUNTS

CESAR

SAYOC WAS DETERMINED TO DO HARM.

>> THOUGH WE ARE STILL

ANALYZING THE DEVICES IN OUR

LABORATORY, THESE WERE NOT HOAX

DEVICES.

>> Reporter: HE WAS ARRESTED

NEAR

AN AUTO PARTS STORE WHERE HE

ALLEGEDLY PURCHASED FLAMMABLE

CHEMICALS LAST WEEK.

THEY TRACKED HIM THROUGH

FINGERPRINTS ADDRESSED TO MAXINE

WATERS.

D.N.A. EVIDENCE ON OTHER

MAILINGS

ALSO POINT TO HIM.

SAYOC, AMATEUR BODYBUILDER AND

FORMER STRIPPER HAS A LONG

CRIMINAL

HISTORY, INCLUDING ARREST FOR

DRUGS, FRAUD AND THEFT.

IN 2002 HE PLEADED GUILTY TO A

BOMB

THREAT CHARGE AFTER THREATENING

TO

BLOW UP A POWER COMPANY.

HIS FORMER BOSS AT A RESTAURANT

SAID HE IS A RACIST.

SHE IS GAY.

>> MORE THAN ONCE HE TOLD ME IF

HE

HAD COMPLETE AUTO -- AUTONOMY

I

HAD COMPLETE AUTONOMY I

WOULD BURN IN HELL WITH THE

BLACKS,

JEWS AND HISPANICS AND EVERYONE

ELSE.

>> A TWITTER ACCOUNT WHICH

APPEARS

TO BELONG TO SAYOC FEATURES

THREATS

AGAINST MANY DEMOCRATS TARGETED

INCLUDING JIM BIDEN CALLING HIM

A

PIECE OF SLIME TRASH, HUG YOUR

WIFE

IT SAYS.

AND APPEARS TO SHOW SAYOC AT A

TRUMP RALLY.

HIS SIGN "CNN SUCKS".

ASKED IF HE WAS AWARE HIS IMAGE

WAS

ALL OVER THE SUSPECT'S VAN HIS

ANSWER --

>> President Donald Trump: I DID

NOT SEE MY FACE ON THE VAN, I

KNOW HE PREFERRED ME OVER OTHERS

BUT I DIDN'T SEE THAT.

>> Reporter: TRUMP TWEETED

REPUBLICANS ARE DOING SO WELL

NOW

THIS BOMB STUFF HAPPENS AND THE

MOMENTUM GREATLY SLOWS.

AT HIS RALLY TRUMP CALLED TO AN

END

FOR POLITICAL DESTRUCTION AND

THEN

BLAMED THE MEDIA.

>> President Donald Trump: THE

MEDIA HAS A MAJOR ROLE TO PLAY,

WHETHER THEY WANT TO OR NOT.

>> Reporter: THE CROWD ATE IT

UP,

CHANTING "CNN SUCKS".

THE SAME SLOGAN FROM SAYOC'S

SIGN.

LYNDSAY DUNCOMBE, CBC

WASHINGTON.

>> Adrienne: YOU HEARD FROM THE

OWNER OF THE RESTAURANT SAYOC

WORKED.

HERE IS MORE FROM HER, SHE SAID

BECAUSE OF HIS VEHICLE HE WASN'T

ALLOWED TO MAKE DELIVERIES

DURING

THE DAY.

>> I HAD TO HAVE HIM DRIVE AT

NIGHT, I COULDN'T HAVE HIM

DRIVING

IN THE DAYTIME.

HE PARKED THE VAN AROUND THE

CORNER.

I NEVER GOT ANY COMPLAINTS FROM

ANY

CUSTOMERS.

IF I DID, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN

FIRED.

AS FAR AS AN EMPLOYEE HE WAS ON

TIME, CORDIAL, ARTICULATE.

I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH

HIM.

THERE WAS NO THEFT.

MY CUSTOMERS LIKED HIM.

BUT IT WAS JUST HIS POLITICAL

VIEWS

THAT SCARED ME.

BASICALLY, HE WAS A MODEL

EMPLOYEE.

>> Adrienne: OKAY, SO ALL THAT

TALK

ABOUT THE PRO-TRUMP STICKERS ON

SAYOC'S VAN.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK IN MORE

DETAIL.

KEEP IN MIND THE ONES WE WILL

SHOW

YOU JUST COME FROM ONE SECTION

OF

THE PASSENGER SIDE.

THE VAN ITSELF IS COVERED IN

THEM.

THE STICKERS SEEM TO SAY TWO

THINGS

THAT SAYOC WORSHIPPED PRESIDENT

TRUMP AND HAD CONTEMPT FOR

LIBERAL

POLITICIANS AS WELL AS THE

MEDIA,

CNN IN PARTICULAR.

IN ONE IMAGE TRUMP RIDES A TANK

INTO BATTLE BESIDE A BALD EAGLE

FIRING A MACHINE GUN.

TO THE LEFT, HILLARY CLINTON,

BARACK OBAMA AND MICHAEL MOORE

ALL

WITH GUN SIGHTS ON THEM.

ANOTHER TITLED "I HAVE A DREAM"

AND

APPEARS TO SHOW LIBERALS RUNNING

AS

IF THEY ARE BEING SHOT AT.

AND THIS ONE SEEMS PULLED RIGHT

FROM THE 2016, PRESIDENTIAL

CAMPAIGN A SWAMP POPULATED WITH

A

WHOSE WHO OF PROMINENT TRUMP

CRITICS APPARENTLY SINKING IN

THE

SLIME.

A LOT GOING ON IN SAYOC'S MIND.

FOR SOME INSIGHT I'M JOINED BY

BRIAN LEVIN AT CALIFORNIA STATE

UNIVERSITY.

IT FEELS LIKE A TIME OF

HEIGHTENED

POLITICAL FURY AND VIOLENCE.

NOT JUST THE PIPE BOMBS BUT

SHOOTING AT THE REPUBLICAN

BASEBALL

PRACTICE.

BUT DOES YOUR RESEARCH ACTUALLY

BEAR THOSE OUT?

>> YES, IT'S A RISE IN TIDE BUT

SOMETIMES WE HAVE OVERWHELMING

WAVES.

NOVEMBER 2016 WAS THE WORST

MONTH

FOR HATE CRIME IN 14 YEARS, AND

THE

DAY AFTER THE ELECTION THERE WAS

A

BOMB PLOT TO BLOWUP A MUSLIM

POPULATED APARTMENT COMPLEX, AND

THAT WAS THE WORST DAY FOR HATE

CRIME, SINCE 2003, SO WE HAVE

BEEN

SEEING THIS GO UP IN WAVES, THEN

GO

DOWN A LITTLE BIT BUT THE TIDE

IS

RISING AND THE FAR RIGHT HERE IN

THE UNITED STATES IS THE MOST

ASCENDANT.

>> Adrienne: WHAT MAKES IT HARD

FOR

LAW ENFORCEMENT TO GET AHEAD OF

THIS.

>> THAT IS A GREAT QUESTION.

WHAT WE SAW IS THIS RISING TIDE

WHERE GROUPS WERE INVOLVED.

WE SAW THE UNITE THE RIGHT

RALLY.

SINCE THEN WE HAVE SEEN

FRAGMENTATION OF THE

ORGANIZATIONS

AND THEIR LEADERSHIP, WHICH

MEANS A

LOT OF THESE LOOSE CHERIES WHO

WOULD BE CONTENT TO GO TO A

RALLY

OR SPOUT ON THE INTERNET WOULD

BECOME OPERATIONAL.

SO THESE LOANERS BECOME THE

BIGGEST

PROBLEM FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

BECAUSE

IT'S HARD TO INVESTIGATE A TRAIL

OF

ONE.

>> Adrienne: ALL RIGHT, BRIAN

LEVIN, THANKS VERY MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> Andrew: SURROGATE MOTHERS

CANNOT

BE PAID FOR GIVING BIRTH.

BUT WHAT THEY CAN BE PAID FOR

ISN'T

QUITE SO STRAIGHT FORWARD.

WE WILL LOOK AT WHY THAT COULD

SOON

CHANGE.

>> Adrienne: AND WE'VE BEEN

TELLING

YOU ABOUT SOME OF THE MISLEADING

TACTICS CANADA'S TELECOM

COMPANIES

HAVE BEEN USING TO SELL THEIR

PRODUCTS.

TODAY BELL AND ROGERS HAD TO

EXPLAIN THEMSELVES TO THE CRTC.

>> FIRST THE FAMILY OF MURDERED

BILLIONAIRES HONEY AND BARRY

SHERMAN SAID THEY ARE

FRUSTRATED,

FED UP AND TAKING MATTERS IN

THEIR

OWN HANDS.

THEY ARE OFFERING A $10 MILLION

REWARD FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE

CASE.

THE SHERMANS WERE FOUND DEAD IN

THEIR TORONTO MANSION NEARLY A

YEAR

AGO AND AS RON CHARLES TELLS US,

ALL THIS TIME LATER, NO

SUSPECTS,

NO ARRESTS.

>> Reporter: THE LAWYER FOR THE

SHERMAN FAMILY SAYS THEY ARE

OFFERING THE $10 MILLION REWARD

OUT

OF FRUSTRATION.

AT THE APPARENT LACK OF PROGRESS

IN

SOLVING THE MURDERS LAST

DECEMBER

OF BARRY AND HONEY SHERMAN.

>> ALSO TO LIGHT THE FIRE UNDER

THE

TORONTO POLICE SERVICE AND TO

TRY

TO ENSURE THAT THOSE

INVESTIGATIVE

STEPS, WHICH EITHER HAVE NOT YET

BEEN COMPLETED.

>> IN THE EARLY DAYS AFTER THE

MURDERS

THE FAMILY OF THE BILLIONAIRE

COUPLE HIRED A TEAM OF RETIRED

POLICE DETECTIVES AND FORMER

ONTARIO CHIEF CORONER TO

PRIVATELY

INVESTIGATE THE CASE.

>> OUR PARENTS NEVER LEFT ANYONE

BEHIND.

THEY WERE TAKEN FROM US.

>> THE SHERMANS FOUR ADULT

CHILDREN

HAVE HEAPED CRITICISM ON THE

TORONTO POLICE FORCE, ACCUSING

DETECTIVES OF INITIALLY TREATING

THE DEATHS AS A MURDER SUICIDE

AND

BUNGLING THE SUBSEQUENT DOUBLE

MURDER INVESTIGATION.

THE FAMILIES PRIVATE TEAM SAYS

POLICE FAILED TO CHECK ALL

POSSIBLE

ENTRANCES TO THE HOUSE, COLLECT

ALL

POSSIBLE EVIDENCE AND TAKE

FINGERPRINTS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAD

ROUTINE ACCESS TO THE HOUSE.

>> WE KNOW THERE WERE OTHER

PEOPLE

IN THE CRIME SCENE SUCH AS

HOUSEKEEPERS AND CLEANERS.

WE HAVE SPOKE TO SOME OF THESE

PEOPLE AND SOME HAVEN'T BEEN

FINGERPRINTED.

>> THIS INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN

DONE

TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF

PROFESSIONALISM, AND HIGH LEVEL

OF

EXPERTISE.

>> TORONTO'S POLICE CHIEF

DEFENDED

HIS INVESTIGATORS AND WELCOMED

THE

REWARD, AT LEAST THIS THEORY.

>> WE KNOW HISTORICALLY REWARDS

DON'T NECESSARILY HELP WHEN IT

COMES TO CONCLUDING CASES, BUT

THIS

IS AN OPPORTUNITY THAT MAY OFFER

GREAT ASSISTANCE.

IT CERTAINLY WILL PUT THE

INVESTIGATION BACK IN THE LIGHT

AGAIN.

>> Reporter: THE SHERMAN FAMILY

HAS

EVEN SET UP A STAFFED TIP LINE,

HOPING THAT SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE

WILL

BE ABLE TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON

WHAT

HAPPENED IN THIS HOUSE TEN

MONTHS

AGO.

RON CHARLES, CBC NEWS, TORONTO.

>> Andrew: WE ALSO HAVE THE

CBC'S

JOHN LANCASTER JOINING US NOW.

YOU HAVE BEEN TRACKING THIS

MURDER

INVESTIGATION FOR MONTHS NOW.

WE HEAR ABOUT THE MOMENT THE

SHERMANS WERE FOUND.

>> ONE INSIDE THE HOUSE WAS A

REALTOR, THERE TO SHOW THE HOUSE

TO

A COUPLE CLIENTS.

HE DOESN'T WANT HIS NAME OUT

THERE

BECAUSE THE KILLERS HAVEN'T BEEN

CAUGHT SO WE AGREED TO PROTECT

HIM

IN THAT REGARD.

HE DESCRIBES THE TOUR WAS ALMOST

OVER WITH HIS CLIENTS THEY HEAD

TO

THE BASEMENT LOOKING INTO THIS

GLASS DOOR LEADING INTO THE POOL

AREA AND APPEAR TO BE TWO

BODIES.

HE REFUSES TO BELIEVE THEY COULD

BE

REAL BODIES.

HE DESCRIBED IT TO ME THINKING A

LEFT OVER HALLOWEEN PRANK FROM

SIX

WEEKS EARLIER WHEN IT WAS

HALLOWEEN.

HE SAID WHAT KIND OF RICH PEOPLE

ARE THESE THAT WOULD LEAVE

SOMETHING LIKE THIS AS A SICK

JOKE.

HE REFUSED TO BELIEVE WHAT HE

SAW,

AND SO DID HIS CLIENTS THAT IT

WAS

REAL.

GIVEN THE STAFF THERE WORKING,

NO

ONE EXPECTED TO SEE DEAD BODIES

IN

THE HOUSE.

>> Andrew: THEY HAVE THIS

JARRING

EXPERIENCE, THEY LEAVE THINKING

IT

COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE BODIES YET

THEY WERE WITNESSES TO THIS

GRUESOME SCENE.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

>> TWO DAYS LATER HE ON THE

INTERNET READING THE NEWS SEEING

THE SHERMANS HAD BEEN MURDERED

AND

REALIZES WHAT THEY HAD SEEN WAS

REAL.

HE SAID IT WASN'T UNTIL ABOUT A

WEEK OR TWO LATER THOUGH THAT

POLICE ACTUALLY REACHED OUT TO

HIM

TO GET A STATEMENT FROM HIM,

EVEN

THOUGH HE HAD BEEN THERE WHEN

THE

BODIES WERE DISCOVERED.

HE SAID HE TALKED TO POLICE, HE

HANDED OVER THE SHOES HE WORE

THERE

AND SAID POLICE HAVE SINCE

FOLLOWED

UP TO GET HIS FINGERPRINTS BUT

HAVEN'T ACTUALLY FOLLOWED UP

YET.

>> Andrew: THANK YOU.

>> Adrienne: LET'S TURN TO

ANOTHER

ONGOING CANADIAN INVESTIGATION.

THIS COUNTRY'S TWO BIGGEST

TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES ARE

DEFENDING THE WAY THEY AND THEIR

EMPLOYEES DO BUSINESS.

BOTH BELL AND ROGERS SPOKE AT

PUBLIC HEARINGS LOOKING INTO

MISLEADING SALES PRACTICES.

AND AS CATHERINE CULLEN TELLS

US,

IT ALL STARTED WITH A CBC NEWS

INVESTIGATION.

>> ONE COMPLAINT IS ONE

COMPLAINT

TOO MANY.

>> THERE WAS CERTAINLY SOME

CONTRITION FROM ROGERS AND BELL

AT

THESE HEARINGS.

THE THING IS THIS IS ABOUT MUCH,

MUCH MORE THAN ONE COMPLAINT.

>> HOW MANY OTHER SENIOR

CITIZENS

ARE YOU GUYS DOING THIS TO?

>> IT'S BEEN A NON-STOP

NIGHTMARE

FOR ME.

>> THE FIVE DAY HEARINGS WERE

PROMPTED

BY WHAT CBC'S GO PUBLIC

DISCOVERED

WERE MISLEADING SALES TACTICS.

>> I WAS JUST IN SHOCK BECAUSE I

WAS GUARANTEED A PRICE OF $100 A

MONTH FOR THE NEXT, YOU KNOW, 24

MONTHS.

>> Reporter: OTHER TELECOMS HAVE

BEEN QUICK TO BLAME THE BIGGEST

COMPANIES.

>> THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH

CERTAIN

PROVIDERS, THE LARGEST

PROVIDERS.

>> WHILE BELL AND ROGERS

EXPRESSED

REGRET FOR SOME SITUATIONS THEY

ALSO DEFENDED THE WAY THEY DO

BUSINESS.

>> IN SOME INSTANCES WE HAD

ABSOLUTELY FAILED THOSE

CUSTOMERS

BADLY.

IN OTHER INSTANCES THERE WERE,

YOU

COULD SEE THE MISUNDERSTANDING

THAT

OCCURRED.

AND IN SOME INSTANCES WE

ACTUALLY

DO NOT THINK IT WAS A

WELL-FOUNDED

COMPLAINT.

>> YES, WE HAVE 50,000 EMPLOYEES

AND IF FROM TIME TO TIME THERE

IS

AN EMPLOYEE THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT

WE

WILL NEED TO DEAL WITH ON THAT

PARTICULAR ISSUE.

>> BOTH TALKED ABOUT THE NEW

MEASURES THEY WERE TAKING TO

HELP

OUT CUSTOMERS BUT SAID THERE IS

NOT

A LARGER PROBLEM.

>> WE DON'T THINK THERE'S A

SYSTEMIC PROBLEM.

>> IF WE HAD THAT RAMPANT OF AN

ISSUE, CUSTOMERS WOULD NOT WANT

TO

COME TO BELL.

>> Reporter: THE COMPANIES HAVE

PUSHED BACK AGAINST THE IDEA OF

AN

INDUSTRY SALES CODE OF CONDUCT

SAYING THERE'S NO SHORTAGE OF

RULES

RIGHT NOW BUT SOME CONSUMER

GROUPS

HAVE ARGUED THE COMPANIES ARE IN

DENIAL AND NEED NEW RULES AND

OVERSIGHT SO AGGRESSIVE SALES

PRACTICES WILL STOP.

THE C.R.T.C. WILL WEIGH IN WITH

ITS

REPORT BY THE END OF FEBRUARY.

CATHERINE CULLEN, CBC NEWS,

OTTAWA.

>> Andrew: OKAY, NOW TO A STORY

THAT IS SO INCREDIBLY PERSONAL

TO

SO MANY IN THIS COUNTRY.

CANADIAN COUPLES SEEKING HELP TO

HAVE A BABY AREN'T ALLOWED TO

HIRE

A SURROGATE MOTHER UNDER THE

LAW.

BUT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO PAY FOR

ISN'T SO CLEAR.

TODAY HEALTH CANADA IS LAYING

DOWN

SOME GROUND RULES.

CHRISTINE BIRAK ASKS THE

QUESTION,

WHAT IMPACT WILL THOSE CHANGES

HAVE?

>> TWO KIDS CAN BE 'HANDFUL.

LYNDSAY JARRETT HAS FIVE.

HER FAMILY IS COMPLETE BUT SHE

IS

HOPING TO HAVE ONE MORE.

FOR A COUPLE SHE HAS NEVER MET.

>> MY BODY IS ABLE THEN WHY NOT

GIVE SOMEONE THAT GIFT.

>> LEGALLY IT HAS TO BE A GIFT.

BUT UNTIL NOW IT WASN'T CLEAR

WHAT

EXPENSES RELATING TO THAT GIFT

COULD BE PAID FOR BY THE COUPLE.

IF THE COST CROSSED THE LINE AND

STARTED LOOKING LIKE PAYMENT,

SOMEONE COULD GO TO JAIL.

NOW THAT THERE IS A PROPOSED

LIST

OF COVERED EXPENSES, JARRETT IS

RELIEVED.

THE PROPOSED REGULATIONS UNDER

THE

ASSISTED HUMAN REPRODUCTION ACT

COVER SURROGATE MOTHERS ALONG

WITH

THOSE DONATING EGGS AND SPERM.

TRAVEL, INCLUDING

TRANSPORTATION,

PARKING, MEALS AND

ACCOMMODATION,

CHILD CARE, LEGAL SERVICES AND

COUNSELING, AND ANY RELATED

INSURANCE.

SOME BIO ETHICISTS ARE

APPLAUDING

HEALTH CANADA FOR FINALLY

PROPOSING

THESE RULES.

>> I THINK THEY STAY TRUE TO THE

PRINCIPLE OF THE LEDGE HE

ISLATION

WHICH IS THE

NON-COMMERCIALIZATION

OF HUMAN REPRODUCTION.

>> Reporter: FERTILITY LAWYER

SHERRY LEVITAN HOPED IT WOULD

ALLOW

FOR SOME PAYMENTS.

>> WHAT'S DISTRESSING TO ME

THERE'S

STILL A THROW BACK.

>> THE LAW IS MEANT TO PREVENT

COERCION AND PREVENT SELLING

REPRODUCTIVE ABILITIES.

LEVITAN ISN'T TAKING ISSUE WITH

THE

PROPOSED REGULATIONS.

>> IT'S HELPFUL TO TELL THEM

EXACTLY WHAT THEY CAN REIMBURSE

FOR

AND WHAT THEY CAN'T.

>> Reporter: BUT OTHERS ARE FAR

MORE CRITICAL.

LIBERAL M.P. ANTHONY HOUSEFATHER

HAS BEEN MOVING TO END THE BAN,

HE

SAID THEY DON'T GO FAR ENOUGH

INSISTING IT'S TIME TO TAKE A

HARDER LOOK AT THE LAWS WHICH HE

CALLS INEFFECTIVE AND OUTDATED.

CHRISTINE BIRAK, CBC NEWS,

TORONTO.

>> Adrienne: SOME OTHER STORIES

WE

ARE FOLLOWING TONIGHT ON "THE

NATIONAL", THE FIANCEE OF JAMAL

KHASHOGGI REVEALED SHE DECLINED

AN

INVITATION FROM PRESIDENT TRUMP

TO

GO TO THE UNITED STATES.

IN HER FIRST TELEVISION

INTERVIEW,

HATICE CEMGIZ THOUGHT THE

INVITATION WAS

INSINCERE AND THE PRESIDENT'S

MOTIVATION WAS TO SIMPLY WIN

SYMPATHY WITH THE PUBLIC.

KHASHOGGI WAS KILLED IN THE

SAUDI

CONSULATE IN ISTANBUL THREE

WEEKS

AGO.

HE WAS ORGANIZING PAPERWORK FOR

THEIR PLANNED MARRIAGE.

TURKEY WANT TO EXTRADITE 18

SAUDIS IN

RIYADH IN CONNECTION WITH THE

KILLING.

CANADIAN ROBERT WICKENS IS THE

DRIVER INVOLVED IN THAT

TERRIFYING

CRASH BACK IN AUGUST.

HE IS JUST NOW REVEALING THE

EXTENT

OF HIS INJURIES.

THE 29-YEAR-OLD FROM GUELPH,

ONTARIO IS PARALYZED FROM THE

WAIST

DOWN, HE POSTED THIS VIDEO, SAID

SMALL MOVEMENTS IN HIS LEG BUT

HE

IS FAR AWAY FROM WALKING ON HIS

OWN.

>> Andrew: STILL AHEAD TONIGHT

ON

"THE NATIONAL", CONCRETE IS JUST

ABOUT EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK BUT

MAKING IT ACTUALLY PRODUCES A

LOT

OF POLLUTION.

I WILL TAKE YOU INSIDE A

CANADIAN

COMPANY THAT IS TRYING TO FIX

THAT.

>> Adrienne: AND A LITTLE LATER

THE

NEW SEASON OF "MAKING OF A

MURDERER" IS HERE IS THE TRUE

CRIME

GENRE MORE ENTERTAINMENT THAN

INVESTIGATION?

THE POP PANEL WEIGHS IN.

>> Andrew: FIRST THE FIGHT FOR

EQUAL RIGHTS IN HORROR MOVIES.

>> WE HAVE TO CHANGE THIS, WE

HAVE

TO MAKE SURE E

>> I PRAY EVERY NIGHT THAT

HE WOULD ESCAPE.

>> WHAT THE HELL WOULD YOU DO

THAT

FOR?

>> SO I CAN KILL HIM.

>> Adrienne: THERE SHE IS, THAT

IS

JAMIE LEE CURTIS IN THE LATEST

INSTALLMENT OF THE HORROR

FRANCHISE

"HALLOWEEN" THE ROLE SHE FIRST

PLAYED 40 YEARS AGO IS STILL

PLAYING AT BOX OFFICE RAKING IN

$100 MILLION ON ITS OPENING

WEEKEND.

NOT ALL WOMEN IN HORROR HAVE HAD

THESE SAME SURVIVAL SKILLS AS

CURTISES CHARACTER CHT THE GENRE

HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF STEREOTYPING

WOMEN AS SEX OBJECTS OR VICTIMS.

BUT AS DEANA SUMANAC-JOHNSON

EXPLAINS AS MORE WOMEN TAKE TO

THE

DIRECTORS CHAIR THAT'S CHANGING.

>> Reporter: IT'S HORROR TUESDAY

NIGHT AT RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE.

>> WHO DIRECTED SATAN'S

RHAPSODY.

>> THIS GROUP OF WOMEN LOVE THIS

SCARY MOVIE, ESPECIALLY ONE WITH

A

STRONG FEMALE LEAD.

>> THERE'S A MOVIE A LOT OF

PEOPLE

HATE, I LOVE IT, IT'S "ALIEN

VERSES

PREDATOR" SHE IS THE GIRL IN

THAT

MOVIE AND I LOVE HER BECAUSE SHE

IS

MY GIRL CRUSH.

>> I'M SAYING MINE NOW OTHERWISE

SOMEONE WILL TAKE IT.

IT'S RIPLY FROM "ALIEN".

>> THEY AREN'T ALONE.

ACCORDING TO ANALYST BOX OFFICE

PROSLIGHTLY MORE WOMEN THAN MEN

ACTUALLY WATCH HORROR.

>> I THINK WOMEN HAVE A VERY

INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH FEAR

AND

SEEING IT DEPICTED ON SCREEN

COULD

BE VERY CATHARTIC AND

COMFORTING.

>> Reporter: BUT FOR ALL THE

WOMEN

WATCHING HORROR THERE HAVE BEEN

VERY FEW WOMEN MAKING IT, UNTIL

RECENTLY.

>> PEOPLE SEE PEOPLE LIKE ME.

>> CANADIAN TWINS JEN AND SYLVIA

SOSKA ARE AT THE FOREFRONT.

>> WE HAVE TO CHANGE THIS.

WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY

GETS

MURDERED.

>> NOW THEY ARE REMAKING "RABID"

DAVID CRONENBERG ABOUT A WOMAN

TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE BY AN

EXPERIMENTAL SURGERY.

THE STORY LINE IS THE SAME BUT

TOLD

FROM A DISTINCTLY FEMALE

PERSPECTIVE.

>> YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE WALKING

DOWN THE STREET AS A WOMAN

MINDING

YOUR BUSINESS AND SOME GUY

STARTS

FOLLOWING YOU SAYING THINGS TO

PICK

YOU UP AND WHEN YOU IGNORE HIM

BECAUSE HE IS BEING RUDE AND

VULGAR, HE WILL KILL, MURDER AND

RAPE YOU, ETC.

THAT PERSON IS IN THE MOVIE AND

THAT PERSON GETS WHAT'S COMING

TO

THEM AND IT'S SO ENJOYABLE.

>> HORROR FILMS MADE BY MEN TEND

TO

FEATURE FEMALE NUDITY.

BAB DUKE TACKLE WOMEN'S AM

BIVALENCE ABOUT MOTHERHOOD.

>> A LOT OF FEMALE RAGE.

ONE THING THAT HASN'T CHANGED,

THESE FILMS ARE STILL SCARY,

OFTEN

GORY AND DON'T ALWAYS PORTRAY

WOMEN

AS MORALLY PURE.

MARY HERRING, VETERAN CANADIAN

DIRECTOR OF "AMERICAN PSYCHO"

GAVE

THE SOSKA SISTERS NOTES.

>> I THINK IT'S THE LAST

FRONTIER

FOR WOMEN AND I THINK PEOPLE

WOULD

PREFER AS A WOMAN DIRECTOR YOU

DO

FILMS ABOUT WOMEN THAT ARE

EITHER

HEROIC OR VICTIMS, STRAIGHT

FORWARDLY SYMPATHETIC BUT I'VE

ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED BY PEOPLE

WHO ARE MORE COMPLICATED AND

CULPABLE.

>> THEIR RIGHT TO FRIGHT AS THE

WOMEN CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR

EQUALITY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA

AND

BEHIND THE SCENES.

DEANA SUMANAC-JOHNSON, CBC NEWS,

TORONTO.

>> Andrew: UP NEXT ON "THE

NATIONAL", THE FIX FOR A MAJOR

SOURCE OF POLLUTION COULD

ACTUALLY

BE THE POLLUTION ITSELF.

YOU WILL SEE HOW CONCRETE IS

BEING

MADE ALMOST OUT OF THIN AIR.

FIRST STILL, IAN AND THE POP

PANEL.

>> Ian: "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

IS

BACK ON NETFLIX WITH A NEW

SEASON

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER" IS

BACK, WHICH MEANS MANY OF US ARE

ABOUT TO TURN INTO CRIMINAL

JUSTICE

LAWYERS.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BINGED

WATCHED THE SHOW IT'S A SLEW OF

HIGHLY ADDICTED CRIME SHOWS.

>> TRUE CRIME IS LIKE PORN IT

FLOWS

IN WHATEVER FORM, HIGH, LOW.

>> THEY ARE ADDICTIVE BUT THEY

ALSO GET PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT

THE

CRIMINAL SYSTEM.

>> I'M KATIE UNDERWOOD FREELANCE

WRITER.

>> I'M DONNOVAN BENNETT,

SPORTSNET HOST AND WRITER.

>> I'M STEPHEN MARCHE, FREELANCE

AUTHOR AND COLUMNIST.

>> IT'S A REALLY DANGEROUS PART

OF

THE WORLD RIGHT NOW THERE'S A

HUGE

NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CAN'T TELL

THE

DIFFERENCE.

>> AS GREAT AS IT IS TO GET

PEOPLE

ENGAGED IN THE FLAWS OF OUR

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, WE DO

HAVE

TO TAKE THESE SHOWS WITH A GRAIN

OF

SALT.

>> SHOULDN'T OUR CRIMES BE TRIED

IN

IMPARTIAL INSTITUTIONS RATHER

THAN

PUBLIC OPINION?

>> Ian: IT TURNS OUT OUR ENTIRE

POP

PANEL HAS SEEN "MAKING OF A

MURDERER", KNOWS THE GENRE.

STEPHEN, LET'S BEGIN WITH YOU,

WHAT

DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS GENRE?

>> I LIKE THE HUMAN PORTRAIT AND

PORTRAIT OF THE TOWNS.

I LOVE THIS SHOW, I BINGE WATCH

ALL

OF THEM.

THE TRUE CRIME STUFF, WHO DONE

IT,

DID HE DO IT OR NOT DO IT, THAT

KEEPS YOU WATCHING.

BUT THEY ARE REALLY INTIMATE

PORTRAITS OF COMMUNITIES.

THAT'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THEM.

>> Ian: THE THING IS, THE APPEAL

OF

THESE PROGRAM IS UNQUESTIONABLE.

I GUESS THE QUESTION IS, IS THIS

A

GOOD THING OR A BAD THING?

THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE SO

OBSESSED

BY THESE CRIME STORIS?

>> I DON'T THINK IT'S

NECESSARILY A

BAD THING, HAVING THE PUBLIC

EXPOSED TO THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

CAN

ILLUMINATE WHAT IT DOES AND MAKE

PEOPLE MORE AWARE.

SEEING THE PERVERSIONS OF

JUSTICE

THAT I SAW AS A LEGAL EXPERT

BECAUSE I'VE WATCHED IT, I MEAN,

I

THINK I WOULD BE CONCERNED AS A

MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC WATCHING

IT,

BUT I ALSO THINK IT MAKES A LOT

OF

SENSE THAT PEOPLE BE INTERESTED

IN

IT.

>> Ian: YOU HAVE A SLIGHTLY

DIFFERENT VIEW ABOUT ALL THE

ATTENTION AND WHETHER THAT IS A

GOOD OR BAD THING.

>> IT'S NOT GOOD FOR MY INTERNET

CONSUMPTION, IT BUILDS IT UP A

BIT

HIGH.

I LOVE IT.

I ACTUALLY AM GUILTY HOW MUCH I

LOVE IT.

IT IS A BIT OF RUBBERNECKING FOR

ME.

BUT I DO WONDER THOUGH, WHEN YOU

TALK ABOUT SEEING THE CRIMINAL

JUSTICE SYSTEM, HOW MUCH ARE WE

SEEING?

IT'S HIGHLIGHTS.

IT ISN'T REAL DEPICTION.

WE AREN'T GETTING THE DETAIL

BECAUSE IT'S ENTERTAINMENT.

THERE ARE EDITORIAL CHOICES THAT

NEED TO BE MADE BUT I THINK WE

ALL

THINK WE ARE VILLAGE LAWYERS AND

WE

KNOW THESE CASES BASED ON

BINGING

AFTER ONE OR TWO NIGHTS.

>> I'M LOSING MY PATIENCE WITH

ALL

SHOW THAT'S CREATE THIS

ENTERTAINMENT INFORMATION

CONFUSION, THIS DISTORTION IS

UNHEALTHY.

THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS

WHO

WATCH A TELEVISION SHOW AND FEEL

PERFECTLY CONFIDENT THEY KNOW

WHAT

HAPPENED.

THAT'S HOW POOR THEIR

CONSUMPTION

HABITS ARE OF MEDIA.

>> BUT WHO IS THE ONUS ON?

I DON'T THINK NETFLIX THINKS

THEY

ARE WASHINGTON POST OR "NEW YORK

TIMES" OR CBC.

I THINK THE ONUS IS ON US TO ASK

MORE QUESTIONS.

WE SHOULD DO IT WITH OUR NEWS

NEVER

MIND OUR ENTERTAINMENT.

>> IDEALLY.

>> Ian: I'VE HEARD FROM TOO MANY

LAWYERS IN CANADA AND JUDGES WHO

I'VE SPOKEN TO WHO ARE NEGATIVE

ABOUT EVEN NEWS COVERAGE IN THE

COURTS BECAUSE THEY SAY IT'S SO

IMPERFECT, YOU ONLY COVER

CERTAIN

KINDS OF CASES.

MY VIEW IS SOME GOOD COVERAGE IS

BETTER THAN NONE AND WHEN YOU

HAVE

SOME GOOD COVERAGE YOU ARE

OPENING

THE DOOR TO COVERAGE THAT'S NOT

SO

GOOD.

TO YOUR POINT WE HAVE TO HOPE

THE

PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS THAT "MAKING

OF

A MURDERER" IS NOT REALITY.

BUT MAYBE, STEPHEN, IT'S A

VERSION

OF REALITY.

AND MAYBE IT'S CLOSER TO REALITY

THAN LET'S SAY "LAW AND ORDER".

>> YOU ARE A JOURNALIST, RIGHT?

IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN YOU COME AT

IT

FROM THE VIEW OF ENTERTAINMENT.

ESSENTIALLY IF YOU ARE USING

ENTERTAINMENT TO PROVIDE A LENS

ON

REALITY, YOU ARE PROVIDING

REALITY

TELEVISION.

WE KNOW WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES

ARE

WHEN REALITY TELEVISION SWALLOWS

THE WHOLE WORLD BECAUSE WE ARE

LIVING IN IT, THAT'S WHAT

WASHINGTON IS RIGHT NOW.

THAT JUST SEEMS SUPER DANGEROUS

EVEN WHEN THE MOTIVES ARE GOOD.

EVEN WHEN THE MOTIVES ARE

UNQUESTIONABLY GOOD.

>> Ian: I SHOULD POINT OUT ONE

OF

THE INTERESTING THINGS WITH

"MAKING

OF A MURDERER", THE SECOND

SEASON

HAS DROPPED AND THEY ARE MAKING

REFERENCES IN THE SECOND SEASON

TO

ALL THE ATTENTION THEY GOT IN

THE

FIRST SEASON BY VARIOUS

JOURNALISTS, TAKE A LOOK.

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> Ian: MAYBE THERE'S A LITTLE

CONFLICT OF INTEREST HERE.

DONNOVAN IS IN THE WORLD OF

SPORTS

SO LET'S WATCH THAT AGAIN WITH A

LITTLE BIT OF SLOW MOTION.

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

>> "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

[Laughter]

>> Ian: I DID NOT KNOW I WAS

GOING

TO BE IN IT.

I WAS SITTING THERE SATURDAY IN

MY

CONDO AND TWEETING TO FRIENDS

I'M

ON "MAKING OF A MURDERER"

PUTTING THAT ASIDE THERE'S

ALMOST A

NEW GENRE OF THESE MULTI-EPISODE

PODCASTS OR CRIME SHOWS.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

>> I REALLY ENJOYED "MAKING OF A

MURDERER"

I WOULD RECOMMEND PEOPLE NOT

BINGE

WATCH THE WHOLE THING, ALL 8-10.

I DID ON A SUNDAY, IT WAS

PROBABLY

THE MOST DEPRESSING SUNDAY OF MY

ENTIRE LIFE.

I WOULD RECOMMEND IT.

I ALSO FOLLOW "SERIAL" WHICH IS

THE

THING THAT KICKED OFF THE TRUE

CRIME PODCASTS.

I THINK SARAH DID A GREAT JOB OR

AS

GOOD OF A JOB SHE COULD HAVE

GIVEN

IT WAS ONE PERSON TELLING THE

STORY.

>> Ian: IN BOTH CASES, IT DID

MOTIVATE PEOPLE, NOT JUST TO GET

INTERESTED BUT DEMAND MORE

ACCOUNTABILITY.

AND SOMETIMES WENT OVER THE LINE

AS

WE SAW IN THE SECOND SEASON OF

"MAKING OF A MURDERER", THE ONE

I'M

IN, THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW THERE

WERE DEATH THREATS AGAINST THE

PROSECUTORS I THINK DID A LOUSY

JOB

BASED ON WHAT I SAW, BUT

OBVIOUSLY

DIDN'T JUSTIFY DEATH THREATS.

BUT BEFORE WE MOVE ON TO THE

NEXT

TOPIC, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

>> THE JINX.

ON HBO.

BUT "MAKING OF A MURDERER".

"SERIAL" HOW COULD YOU NOT

RECOMMEND "SERIAL".

>> Ian: WHICH IS TRUE OF A LOT

OF

PEOPLE THEY LOVED THE FIRST ONE

DIDN'T EVEN WATCH THE SECOND

ONE.

>> THE KEEPERS.

STAIRCASE, MOMMY AND DADDY

DEAREST.

>> Ian: YOU WATCH A LOT OF TV.

[Laughter]

>> I DO.

I MAY NEED AN INTERVENTION.

>> Ian: LET'S CHANGE TOPICS NOW.

WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT A

RECORD

IN POP MUSIC THAT'S BEEN HELD

SINCE

1964 BY ONE OF THE MOST

INNOVATIVE

AND ARGUABLY CREATIVE GROUPS OF

ALL

TIME, THE BEATLES.

>> WHO?

>> Ian: BEAT BY DRAKE BECAUSE OF

THIS SONG.

[*]

>> Ian: SO WITH THAT SONG DRAKE

HAS

THE MOST TOP TEN SINGLES ON

BILLBOARDS HOT 100 IN A SINGLE

YEAR, THE MOST SINCE THE BEATLES

IN

1964.

WE'RE GOING TO PUT THE LIST UP

OF

THE HITS BY BEATLES AND DRAKE TO

GIVE PEOPLE A SENSE OF HOW

GENERATIONS HAVE CHANGED.

THIS IS, YOU THINK ABOUT ELTON

JOHN, PRINCE, MICHAEL JACKSON,

JUSTIN BIEBER, MADONNA, NONE OF

THOSE PEOPLE CAME CLOSE TO THIS

BEATLES RECORD, A GUY FROM THIS

TOWN, FROM TORONTO.

WHAT'S THE APPEAL OF DRAKE?

>> I THINK DRAKE HAS ALWAYS HAD

AN

EYE TO MASS APPEAL AND AS

RELATABLE

AS POSSIBLE.

EVEN FROM HIS EARLIEST VIDEOS,

SHOT

ONE IN THE SHOPPERS DRUG MART,

TALKED ABOUT LOVING HIS MOM

WEARING

GERIATRIC SWEATERS.

BUT EVEN LOOKING TOWARD MORE

RECENT

VIDEOS, HOTLINE BLING, THERE'S A

HUGE DANCE CRAZE AROUND "IN MY

FEELINGS".

I THINK HE HAS KNOWN HOW TO PLAY

BOTH SIDES OF THE MARKET, AND

BEEN

COGNIZANT OF THAT SINCE HE HAS

BEEN

OUT.

>> HE IS A MEME ARTIST HE MAKES

HUGE SOCIAL MEDIA EVENTS THAT

TRANSCEND MUSIC AND LIFT HIS

MUSIC

TO THIS INCREDIBLE PLACE.

THERE WAS ONE POINT HE HAD 24

SONGS

ON THE BILLBOARD 100.

THAT MEANS HE SAY QUARTER OF

POPULAR MUSIC FOR A MOMENT, IT'S

TOTALLY ABSURD.

BUT IT'S ALSO A DIFFERENCE IN

THE

WAY THESE THINGS ARE TRACKED.

>> Ian: STREAMING NOW.

>> YEAH.

IT'S -- DON'T GET ME WRONG,

IT'S

INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE

NEVERTHELESS.

BUT IT'S LIKE A PIECE GOING

VIRAL

ON FACEBOOK AND EVERYONE GOING

OUT

AND BUYING A NOVEL.

>> Ian: THAT'S A GREAT ANALOGY.

DONNOVAN?

>> I THINK HE IS A CULTURAL

CURATOR.

A TASTE MAKER.

TO YOUR POINT ABOUT THE SOCIAL

MEDIA WHEN AN ALBUM COMES OUT

YOU

KNOW A BUNCH OF CAPTIONS ON

INSTAGRAM WILL BE HIS LYRICS BUT

MORE THAN THAT TO USE A SPORTS

TERM

HE HAS FIGURED OUT THE ANALYTICS

WHEN 1500 STREAMS EQUAL AN ALBUM

SALE, I WANT TO GET ON AS MANY

PLACES AS POSSIBLE.

HIS MUSIC INCORPORATES HIP HOP,

R

AND B, GRIME, DANCE HALL, AFRO

POP, LATIN

>> Ian: I FEEL I LEARNED MORE

ABOUT

HIS APPEAL FROM THE THREE OF YOU

THAN BEFORE WE DID THIS PANEL.

20 SECONDS EACH TO GIVE ME YOUR

TIP

SOMETHING PEOPLE WATCHING SHOULD

BE

THINKING OF CONSUMING.

>> WE HEARD CONSUMING TOO MUCH

TELEVISION.

SHOW CALLED "FOLLOW THIS" ON

NETFLIX, ABOUT THE INTERNET

SPECIFICALLY AND THE CRAZE ON

THE

INTERNET.

IT'S A REALLY GOOD 12-18 MINUTE

WATCH.

>> NEW "HALLOWEEN" MOVIE,

TOTALLY

AMAZING.

GRANDMA REVENGE FANTASY.

THERE'S NOT NEARLY ENOUGH OF IT.

GRANDMA REVENGE FANTASY.

IT'S BRILLIANT.

>> I WOULD SAY THE SHOW IS

SPONSORED BY NETFLIX BUT WE ARE

OUR

OWN NETWORK.

"SALT FAT ACID HEAT".

FOODIE TRAVELOG. IT'S NICE SHOT

OF CHEESES SO WHAT'S

NOT TO LIKE.

>> Ian: OTHER THAN EPISODE ONE

AND

TWO OF "MAKING OF A MURDERER",

MY

WIFE, EVERY TIME I TALK TO HER

ON

THE PHONE SHE IS IN VANCOUVER,

I'M

IN TORONTO, THE ROOKIE WITH

NATHAN

FILION, SHE LOVES THAT SHOW, SHE

SAID IT'S WORTH WATCHING.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE APPEAL IS.

>> ROOKIE BLUE?

>> Ian: MUCH DIFFERENT.

I DEFER TO HER.

IT'S A GOOD IDEA.

>> NOT TO BE CBC P.R. BUT

SHOULDN'T

YOU BE PUMPING YOUR OWN POD

SERIES?

>> Ian: IT'S A PODCAST COMING UP

IN NOVEMBER WE HAVE TIME BUT

THANK

YOU, DONNOVAN.

>> Andrew: ALWAYS THINKING.

UP NEXT ON "THE NATIONAL."

THE CEMENT INDUSTRY IS A BIG

CARBON

DIOXIDE EMITTING INDUSTRY BUT

THE

USING THE POLLUTION ITSELF IS

TRYING

>> Adrienne: TONIGHT ON "THE

NATIONAL", A FRENCH COURT OF

APPEAL

HAS AGAIN DELAYED A RULING IN

THE

CASE OF CANADIAN HASSAN DIAB, HE

WAS SUPPOSED TO LEARN WHETHER

THE

DECISION TO RELEASE HIM FROM

PRISON

LAST JANUARY WOULD BE UPHELD.

INSTEAD THE COURT WANTS TO TAKE

ANOTHER LOOK AT HANDWRITING

EVIDENCE THAT PROSECUTORS CLAIM

LINK DIAB TO THE 1980 BOMBING OF

A

PARIS SYNAGOGUE.

THIS EVIDENCE HAS PREVIOUSLY

BEEN

DISCREDITED.

HE HASN'T FORMALLY BEEN CHARGED

AND

HE HAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED HIS

INNOCENCE.

>> I WANT TO BEGIN WITH TWO 0

WORDS, I'M SORRY.

>> Adrienne: THIS WEEK'S ON-AIR

APOLOGY FROM MEGAN KELLY WASN'T

ENOUGH TO SAVE HER SHOW.

THEY CANCELLED HER SHOW.

SHE DEFENDED THE USE OF BLACK

FACE

DURING A SEGMENT ABOUT HALLOWEEN

COSTUMES.

AND BRAZIL'S MEDIA DUBBED THIS

MAN

AS TRUMP OF THE TROPICS.

HE IS A FORMER ARMY CAPTAIN WHO

HAS

WON MAJOR SUPPORT BY PROMISING

TO

JAIL CORRUPT LAW MAKERS AND MAKE

IT

EASIER FOR POLICE TO SHOOT DRUG

TRAFFICKERS BUT HIS MISOGYNIST

AND

RACIST COMMENTS ALSO ANGERED

MANY.

VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS ON

SUNDAY.

>> Andrew: FEW THINGS HAVE

TRANSFORMED HUMAN CIVILIZATION

LIKE

CONCRETE.

BY FAR THE MOST ABUNDANT MAN

MADE

MATERIAL ON THE PLANET.

IT'S STRONG, DURABLE, FIRE

RESISTANT AND DOESN'T REQUIRE A

LOT

OF MAINTENANCE.

BUT THERE'S A COST.

STAGGERING AMOUNTS OF CARBON

DIOXIDE.

A CANADIAN COMPANY HAS DEVISED A

FIX TO MAKE CONCRETE ALMOST OUT

OF

THIN AIR, IN A WAY.

IMAGINE THAT SAME GAS, CARBON

DIOXIDE BEING USED TO MAKE

STRONG

AND SAFE CONCRETE BLOCKS.

HERE IS A CLOSER LOOK.

THE MODERN WORLD IS LITERALLY

BUILT

OUT OF CONCRETE.

IT'S EVERYWHERE.

>> CONCRETE IS ONE OF THE MOST

WIDELY USED BUILDING MATERIALS

IN

THE WORLD.

>> YOU CAN LOOK AT A BUILDING,

YOU

CAN LOOK AT A CURB, A BRIDGE,

YOU

CAN LOOK AT SCULPTURES, IT'S

JUST

ENDLESS.

EVERYTHING USES CONCRETE.

>> Andrew: BUT THE CONCRETE

INDUSTRY HAS A PROBLEM.

MAKING IT POLLUTES A LOT.

7% OF THE WORLD'S Co2 EMISSIONS

LINK TO A SINGLE INGREDIENT IN

CONCRETE.

>> IF WE COULD REDUCE THAT BY

ANY

AMOUNT IT WOULD BE A SUCCESS.

>> IF YOU COULD GET THAT NUMBER

DOWN IT'S A GAME CHANGER?

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> Andrew: SO HERE IS HOW YOU

MAKE

CONCRETE, YOU NEED THREE THINGS,

WATER, RANDOM BITS LIKE SAND AND

GRAVEL AND CEMENT, WHICH IS THE

GLUE THAT BINDS IT ALL TOGETHER

BUT

MAKING A KILOGRAM OF CEMENT

RELEASES ABOUT A HALF KILOGRAM

OF

CARBON DIOXIDE INTO THE

ATMOSPHERE.

THE TEAM AT A COMPANY CALLED

CARBONCURE HAS DEVISED A CLEVER

WAY

OF TURNING Co2 INTO SOMETHING

USEFUL.

>> JOSH, WHAT DO WE HAVE IN THIS

TANK?

>> CARBON DIOXIDE.

>> Andrew: RIGHT NOW THEY ARE

SHIPPING IT DIRECT FROM

INDUSTRIAL

POLLUTIONERS, IT'S BOTTLED UP

AND

READY FOR THE MIXER.

>> THE Co2 FROM THAT TANK

OUTSIDE

PUMPS IN HERE?

>> YEAH, FROM A PIPE DIRECTLY

INTO

THE MIXER, MIXES WITH THE FRESH

CONCRETE, REACTS RIGHT AWAY.

>> Andrew: YOU HEARD RIGHT.

THEY ARE MIXING Co2 BACK IN THE

CONCRETE, SEQUESTERING IT

FOREVER.

>> IT STARTS REACTING WITH THE

CEMENT IMMEDIATELY AND IS

PERMANENTLY ENCAPSULATED IN THE

CONCRETE.

>> SO EVEN IF THE CONCRETE

BREAKS,

SAY A BUILDING IS DEMOLISHED,

THE

Co2 NEVER ESCAPES BECAUSE IT

HARDENS, IT BECOMES A SOLID AND

EVEN ENOUGH TO TAKE THE PLACE OF

SOME OF THAT EXPENSIVE POLLUTING

CEMENT AND SAVING CEMENT SAVES

MONEY AND REDUCES CARBON

DIOXIDE.

>> ARE YOU GETTING THE SAME

QUALITY

CONCRETE ONLY GREENER.

>> Andrew: IT IS ON A LARGER

SCALE

THIS IDEA STARTS TO SHOW REAL

PROMISE.

BECAUSE TRAPPING CONCRETE BLOCK

BY

BLOCK IS ONE THING.

BUT BY THE HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS

OF

BLOCKS.

THIS PLANT CAN PRODUCE TENS OF

THOUSANDS IN A SINGLE DAY.

ITS ENTIRE PRODUCT LINE IS

INJECTED

WITH CARBON DIOXIDE AND THERE

ARE

100 PLANTS LIKE THIS ONE ACROSS

CANADA AND THE U.S. USING THE

VERY

SAME TECHNOLOGY.

BUT EVEN THAT IS JUST A DROP IN

THE

BUCKET.

>> Andrew: IF THERE ARE SKEPTICS

IN

THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY IT'S

BECAUSE

HOW SENSITIVE THE PROCESS IS.

THESE CONCRETE BLOCKS ARE FRESH

OUT

OF THE MOULD.

THE MIXTURE HAS TO BE JUST

RIGHT.

THEY ARE LASER MEASURED TO MAKE

SURE THEY ARE RIGHT TO SPEC AND

IF

ANYTHING IS OFF, THESE BLOCKS

COME

RIGHT OFF AND THEY ARE JUNK.

>> THIS IS ACTUALLY THE AREA

WHERE

WE DRILLED CORES OUT TO SEND TO

THE

LAB FOR TESTING.

>> LUKE JOHNSON WORKS FOR TRIDEL

A

MAJOR DEVELOPER BASED IN

TORONTO.

>> I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IT IS,

WHAT

IT DOES, DOES IT AFFECT MY TIME

LINE, MY BUDGET AND ONE OF OUR

CORE

VALUES DOES IT AFFECT OUR

QUALITY.

>> Andrew: ON THIS DOWNTOWN

SITE,

14 STORIES WILL RIDE ON THE

STRENGTH OF HIS CONCRETE.

THE WALLS, CONVENTIONAL RUN OF

THE

MILL STUFF, BUT THE BIG TEST,

THE

FLOOR UNDER OUR FEET.

>> HOW DID IT DO?

>> IT PERFORMED WELL.

THE ORDER WENT WELL.

>> STRUCTURALLY?

>> EVERYTHING, IT MET THE

SPECIFIED

CRITERIA.

>> NOT FAR AWAY A PROJECT WITH

CARBONCURE IN MIND FROM THE

START.

THIS WILL BE A HOSPITAL IN

VAUGHN,

ONTARIO.

>> IT'S USING IN EXCESS OF

500,000

BLOCKS.

>> IT'S AN EXAMPLE HOW A NOD TO

THE

ENVIRONMENT CAN PAY OFF BIG.

THE PROMISE OF A GREEN BUILDING

WAS

KEY TO GETTING THIS PROJECT OFF

THE

GROUND.

>> HOW MUCH CARBON DIOXIDE ARE

YOU

ABLE TO TRAP?

>> SO THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT IS

JUST UNDER 14,000 POUNDS OF Co2

ESSENTIALLY IS CAPTURED IN

THERE.

TO PUT THAT INTO MORE RELATABLE

TERMS, THE EQUIVALENT OF ABOUT

146

TREE SEEDLINGS GROWN OVER TEN

YEARS.

>> TRAPPED IN THAT BUILDING?

ONCE ITS DONE?

>> RIGHT.

>> Andrew: ACROSS ALL ITS

PROJECTS

CARBONCURE ESTIMATES IT'S KEPT

MILLIONS OF KILOGRAMS OF Co2

FROM

ESCAPING IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

THE CHALLENGE NOW IS GETTING THE

WORD OUT AND CONVINCING COMPANY

IT'S COULD PAY TO GO GREEN,

DOING

THAT COULD GO A LONG WAY TURNING

GREENHOUSE GAS INTO SIMPLE

BUILDING.

>> Adrienne: IT'S LIKE THE

DEFINITION OF A FIX.

I IMAGINE IT MEANS COMPANIES

WILL

BE ABLE TO PULL BACK ON HOW MUCH

CEMENT THEY END UP USING.

IS IT YOUR SENSE THEY ARE

ALREADY

PULLING BACK?

>> Andrew: THAT'S A REALLY GOOD

QUESTION, I HAD THE SAME ONE.

THE SHORT ANSWER, ARE THEY USING

LESS CEMENT?

NO, NOT YET.

BOTH COMPANIES YOU JUST SAW ARE

STILL UNSURE.

THEY WANT TO SEE HOW THIS STUFF

PERFORMS OVER A REALLY LONG

PERIOD

OF TIME.

LIKE YEARS, BEFORE THEY START

REDUCING CEMENT BIT BY BIT.

IT'S FAIR, CONSIDERING YOU DON'T

WANT TO ROLL THE DICE ON A 20

STORY

BUILDING.

THE CONCRETE THEY ARE USING NOW

IS

STRONGER BECAUSE IT'S BEEN

REINFORCED WITH CARBON DIOXIDE

BUT

NOWHERE NEAR AS GREEN AS IT

COULD

BE, NOT YET.

>> Adrienne: ALL RIGHT.

UNTAPPED POTENTIAL.

OUR MOMENT UP NEXT.

>> Andrew: IT'S AN HONOUR

USUALLY

RESERVED FOR U.S. PRESIDENTS.

BEING LAID TO REST IN

WASHINGTON'S

NATIONAL CATHEDRAL BUT TODAY IT

WAS

MATTHEW SHEPARD'S TERM 20 YEARS

AFTER HE WAS MURDERED FOR BEING

GAY.

HE WAS ROBBED, BEATEN AND TIED

TO A

FENCE IN WYOMING.

HIS BRUTAL KILLING BECAME A

RALLYING CRY FOR LGBTQ RIGHTS

AND

FOR YEARS HIS PARENTS KEPT HIS

ASHES IN THEIR HOME UNTIL NOW,

AND

THAT IS "OUR MOMENT".

>> SO IMPORTANT WE NOW HAVE A

HOME

FOR MATT.

A HOME THAT OTHERS CAN VISIT.

A HOME THAT IS SAFE FROM HATERS.

A HOME THAT HE LOVED DEARLY.

MATT WAS BLIND.

JUST LIKE THIS BEAUTIFUL HOUSE

OF

WORSHIP.

HE DIDN'T SEE SKIN COLOUR.

HE DID NOT SEE RELIGION.

HE DIDN'T SEE SEXUAL

ORIENTATION.

ALL HE SAW WAS A CHANCE TO HAVE

ANOTHER FRIEND.

>> I HAVE THREE THINGS I WANT TO

SAY TO MATT.

GENTLY REST IN THIS PLACE.

YOU ARE SAFE NOW.

OH YEAH, AND MATT, WELCOME HOME.

AMEN.

>> Adrienne: YOU KNOW, IT'S

AMAZING.

THIS IS THE FUNERAL MATTHEW

SHEPARD

DIDN'T GET TO HAVE 20 YEARS AGO.

THERE WERE SO MANY HOMOPHOBIC

PROTESTORS AT THE FUNERAL, HIS

DAD

HAD TO WEAR A BULLET PROOF VEST.

I HEARD THAT THE FIRST POLICE

OFFICER ON THE SCENE FOUND A

DEAR

LYING BESIDE MATTHEW'S BODY AND

WHEN SHE APPROACHED THE DEAR

LOCKED

EYES WITH HER BEFORE IT WALKED

AWAY

AND IT'S HAUNTED HER EVER SINCE.

>> Andrew: THIS THEME OF BEING

HOME

KEPT COMING UP.

AND THAT PLACE, THE WASHINGTON

NATIONAL CATHEDRAL IS VERY MUCH

THOUGHT OF AS THE SPIRITUAL HOME

OF

THE NATION.

SO HOPEFULLY TODAY PROVIDED SOME

CLOSURE TO A NATION THAT WENT

NUMB

ALL THOSE YEARS AGO.

THAT IS "THE NATIONAL" FOR THIS

OCTOBER 26th.

HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.

Road to POWER STRUGGLE ~SUPER Jr. TAG LEAGUE 2018~ (October 26) - Post-match Interview [7th match] - Duration: 1:54.

Crap!

Nothing to say. Damn it!

This win is a big deal.

Today, BUSHI made it happen.

Someone talked trash about us, calling us an improvised team...

That's not true. We've always been connected, in our hearts.

Missing your team move was a mistake for you guys.

Well… At the opening match, Naito, EVIL and SANADA showed up for us.

I want to meet their expectations, completely.

See that?

I guess there was a move like it before,

But it was a bit different, our move is something else...

It's called...

What do you think?

Since I took a win, with Shingo Takagi… I call it, 'Rebellion'.

We won't just win this Junior Tag League,

Besides being victorious,

Making this league a much bigger deal is important to us.

The Junior tag division of New Japan is on fire.

You want to see this get even more heated up, don't you?

Then we'll just have to win this league.

EN SERIO!

MA-JI-DE.

Thank you very much.

That's my best Tanahashi impression...

Don't go yet, there's a lot of time until the last train leaves.

He's making sure that no one leaves.

Can you stay with me for 2 more hours?

He's so good.

He's like a folk singer who comes to your town.

How was it? You didn't expect us to win, right?

He knows these fans.

ACH...

He did 69% of the work today.

I put in about 4%.

The rest came from your cheers.

Thank you.

That makes sense.

ACH just spins around Taguchi.

Thank you. That's enough.

A bit tired now, huh?

I can keep talking forever and we will run out of time, so now, ACH…

He's so lovable. Sneaky!

That smile.

Speeches are like skirts, they're better when they're short.

He stuttered at bit there.

That was my speech. Thank you.

SUPER!

That's what we want!

That comes a little later.

They're having a bit of trouble.

Wait patiently.

But since he did it, we'll wrap up here.

He goofed, huh?

Taguchi always knows what to do.

SUPER 69...

We will win this league!

Everyone in Korakuen, finally...

SUPER!

I like you guys a lot!

But he doesn't love them?

He made it his own.

Take a seat.

His ass was...

Hard.

Today, completely...

Belonged to them. Damn it.

SHO and YOH were so persistent, so...

I pulled out the Korakuen Suplex, which I didn't plan to use.

They made me go for the Korakuen Suplex.

Roppongi was awesome, but we managed to best them.

I'm not going to speak modestly,

We want a shot at the title.

Thank you.

ユージローさん…

もうちょっと。

Are you okay?

大丈夫じゃないよ。

Are you okay?

あとちょっとで棚橋から勝てた…

本間!

あいつ邪魔だ!

これからどうしてやろうか?

首を壊すとか?

また首を痛めつけてやるか?

Chase recently learned this Japanese phrase, 'Otsukaresamadeshita,'

Good work today.

パーフェクト!

日本語話せる。これで 俺も日本人の仲間入りだ。

ドクターはどこにいるんだ?

This is an irregular tour, is it tricky for you to find your purpose?

About that…

More than this tour...

I don't think it has to do with the tour.

My own feelings...

They're getting away from me. I'm not sure how to feel.

Tanahashi is...

I can't tell what his purpose is...

I don't know...

Tomorrow… I'll just do it all again.

I will.

That's it for tonight...

Come at me, c'mon…

Good, wasn't it?

Korakuen, it's been a while...

Although I may be a celebrity, I'm a pro-wrestler first

Pro-wrestling is everything to me.

Today felt good. Felt awesome.

Kokeshi did a great job. So did the ladies' man. Perfect.

But our opponents are pains in the ass.

I guess that's what they got, huh?

I'm gonna beat the crap out of them. That's it.

I've been hard on myself since coming back,

I can't move enough. I hate myself for it.

But...

I will try to accept how I am, day by day.

This is who I am, Kokeshi.

I believe that a pro-wrestler should be…

Selfish…

They must be egotistical.

They need to greedy to reach the top, even if it means eliminating others.

It's crucial.

However…

I think that...

The selfishness that Kenny has...

Is not quite right...

It's not that he's too selfish...

I don't feel like putting it all out there,

But I rewatched the press conference, it was interesting.

I'm not going to say it all,

But if you ask me if like Kenny's wrestling, I hate it!

Not enough.

That's all.

I'm happy...

But it's frustrating to lose a fight.

There's still a lot for me to learn, including from today's fight.

Even with the years I have, I honestly feel like I still need to learn.

I often say this, pro-wrestling is not something to watch.

It's something to do. I've got to take action.

Our losses put us behind, right?

But everyone is pretty close, though.

We have to be careful to not slip any further.

Everyday is a trial. The league still goes on. We'll fight.

That's it.

With every win we have become a more complete team.

I'm KUSHIDA, but sometimes I'm Alex Shelley.

Other times I'm Chris Sabin.

Sometimes he's KUSHIDA.

Other times he's Alex Shelley.

You've never seen a tag team like this before.

We'll win all our remaining matches.

And we'll be victorious. And then there's ROH in November...

Young Bucks...

Seems like I'll be pretty busy.

We're almost a perfect team, we can't wait to face the best teams in the world.

#1 Simple stroke - Permanent makeup tutorial on latex - Duration: 8:26.

it is kind of an oval in the air. You

touch the latex then exit, make

an oval in the air and then once again back to latex touch

and so on again and again…hello everyone, my name is

Elena Nechaeva and

this is the distance course "The stroke on Latex"

If you want to master the ideal

stroke and do ,without worrying at all,

any shape, with soft borders, without

joints and spots, first you need to learn

hold the device correctly.

If it is a shading (and in our case

of course it is), then we do not hold it

close to the nozzle, otherwise your stroke will be

with a rough start and

ending. We 17th 00: 00: 42,899 -> 00: 00: 49,200 we need to get a stroke consisting of a series

of dots and has no beginning, no end.

a stroke, into which you can pour the following

stroke and from above, and from below, and from the side. From any

side, because it, in fact, does not have

a start

and has no endings. It consists of a series

of dots. Here it is clear that both, in the beginning and

at the end I have smaller dots, more 26th 00: 01: 07,799 -> 00: 01: 13,340 transparent and they take off from the surface 27th 00: 01: 10,799 -> 00: 01: 16,049 That is, I can attach a new stroke and from above,

and from below and no one will understand that I did it.

No one will understand where exactly

began and ended my previous

stroke. By the way, if you do not know how

to set up the machine, there will be

a link to the video, where I tell about it

in detail. The amount of pigment that

will remain in the latex (or in the skin)

depends on how fast

your hand moves, and what speed

is displayed on your device.

We will work on minimum

speed, because

It will be easier to master your movement with

minimum speed. If

I work slowly I draw

a line. This is unacceptable neither

in any technique nor on any zone.

My task is to teach you how to work

such a series of dots. Therefore

depending on what speed

of your machine is ,

you must learn how to move your hand,

so that it remains a series of dots. It is

very important! You,

starting with a very fast movement or

maybe even with slow as

what is easier for you. Gradually increase speed.

So I see that I still have

dots. Blurred, without borders in

general, the line begins to form. It is this

the speed of the hand I must

to fix. So, when you found

position of the hand and speed for your movement, where

there remains a series of dots, you must understand,

that you mustn't move slower

otherwise you will start to get

lines. Now about the very important. Look

at my hand: my little finger stands in

the role of the leg of the compass.

I can move in

any direction and

The hand, thanks to the little finger, holds on to weight.

I do not put

fist - it's uncomfortable and wrong.

It limits the movement of the hand and, at the end,

will be too much concentration of the pigment. Thats is why

little finger is always stays like this, just this way,

or can be hold like a "hook", depends on

what is more comfortable for you. This block of

three fingers is active.

Ring-finger

can be either pressed, or

holds this block here. It turns out,

that the machine lies down between the thumb and forefinger.

It kind of

lean on, lies on

middle finger, pushes the forefinger, and

thumb is just slightly

holds the machine. Please, pay attention to

the thumb - a lot of masters

make the following mistake: they put

thumb in this way, and they,

this is very noticeable,

limit the movement by it. As a result, the stroke

is finished with density,

therefore it is important to monitor

The thumb just lay on top and did not limit the progress of the machine.

This block of three fingers

moves freely.

I push the machine towards myself, and while moving

in the opposite direction the thumb does not allow me to fall.

Movement in the opposite direction

similar to the movement of

the pendulum. The machine is vibrating

due to the centripetal

force. As a result, comes out easy

movement of the device, which I make with my fingers.

The machine dangle freely, and I just do not let it fall out of my hand.

If you do as I recommend, your fingers will not be

tense, and here, in his hand, will not appear

a cramp, as many of you describe.

The movement will be light. When I

I hold the device - my hand, in general

relaxed and my movement

like a pendulum,

but only it is not completely loose.

This pendulum-like motion "stops"

by latex at the moment I touch it

(the latex). I do not try

go deep into, I'm making

caress movement, and so

smoothly go out latex. You need

to achieve the movement when

a sweep in the air is longer,

than a touch to latex. Your

hand and needle movements are similar

to take off and landing of the airplane.

Here is "landing", as you are moving towards yourself,

and then immediately to take off.

Soft touch, without a clear line at the end

or the beginning, can be achieved,

when you work with "take-off" movement 131 00: 05: 35,580 -> 00: 05: 41,460 and with movement towards yourself and back.

Also, there is a stroke in one direction only -

towards yourself

when you're drawing kind of

oval shape in the air. You pass on latex,

exit , make an oval in the air and then

do it once again. And so endlessly.

You must master a stroke of at least two

half a centimeter in length in order

to start getting a movement

back and forth, back and forth, to and from

yourself. This will really speed up your work,

because you will not loose

time for nothing.

but it will not work for you if you will

try to do it

with a short stroke. That's why, we work with a stroke of at least two,

two and a half centimeters long.

When you hold the machine correctly and waved it a bit

in the air, put a finger so

it is under control,

start action in the air, not

touching latex ,

with chosen speed,

going down and the moment you

touched latex, you start

with the same effort slowly move

to the right, very slowly, without rearranging

little finger and just doing almost

invisible fist movement. You must

create such a stroke that won't have

beginning, and there will be no ending.

No need to draw

such strokes with a hard beginning.

Make movements that look like take-off and landing of an airplane.

Make movements that look like take-off and landing of an airplane.

Make strokes that remind the take-off - landing of an airplane.

Task: to find the speed of hand movement

that your machine

will draw dots, not stripes. Your

beginning and ending of the stroke has to be airy.

You need to draw at least five full-length stripes of latex,

until you achieve this

perfect beginning and ending

of your stroke and learn to work with dots.

Such strips you need

create a minimum of 5, and in theory, in the end of 5th strip you

should be able to do it already - airy

beginning and end. If it does not work out

from the first time - try again and again until

you master this movement,

similar to a pendulum or aeroplane's takeoff - landing.

Save your homeworks and if you

join the course till end and will send

you homeworks to us

We will give you our certificate of

passage of the distance course

"Stroke on latex"

Thank you all for watching, bye everyone.

SWISH-HATET - Duration: 11:57.

Hello, my name is Henrik Jönsson

and today I want to talk about the digitalisation of the economy

and the friction this is creating between the civil society and the state establishment

...and explain why the left wing HATES crowd-funding!

Stay tuned!

Lately the media platforms of the establishment

have established the denigrating concept of "Swish-journalism"

aimed at individuals who use digital platforms to independently

publish their views and opinions.

"Swish" is one of many ways to conduct so called "crowd-funding".

which means internet based micro-financing, where large numbers of individuals

on their own accord freely choose to donate small sums of money, but in great numbers

which together make them an economic force to be reckoned with.

Critique of crowdfunding is loosely founded in the idea that media production

which is funded by donations is dependent on their audience

and thus susceptible to populism.

An equally unsavoury mirror image would be to establish the concept of

"Theft-journalism" to describe the journalism whose angles and perspectives are

dependent on various forms of government support and tax money.

No man is an island.

In social culture we are all dependent on one another

the question is who you're depending on: the government to collect tax money for you

which is then redistributed from on high

or on 10,000 individuals who freely choose to share their resources.

This conflict is increasingly present in established media.

Mainly in a context where crodfunded media production is vilified and derided

most recently in the Public Service-funded youth entertainment radio show, "The Think tank" in radio 3.

"another thing that is characteristic of these new beggars"

"is that they put their phone number in their Twitter bio"

"so people can Swish them money to finance the crap they're producing, and possibly their addictions too." "is that they put their phone number in their Twitter bio"

"so people can Swish them money to finance the crap they're producing, and possibly their addictions too."

"have you got any others you want to take a piss on?" "so people can Swish them money to finance the crap they're producing, and possibly their addictions too."

"have you got any others you want to take a piss on?"

"yeah, these people have rural semi-nazis as their target group, right?" "have you got any others you want to take a piss on?"

"yeah, these people have rural semi-nazis as their target group, right?"

"Exactly." "yeah, these people have rural semi-nazis as their target group, right?"

"Exactly."

This was a particularly clumsy attempt of internal satire

as they expose several individuals by name, with the subtextual encouragement to

sabotage their livelihood.

You can certainly question the appropriateness for a colossal media organization like public service

which recently decided to ask for 8,5 inflation adjusted billions Swedish crowns in perpetual annual financing

when it decided to attack a small group of citizens for

taking in a few thousand crowns a month in freely given donations by the civil society.

but the overbearing question is more important:

WHY does the left wing hate crowdfunding so much?

During 2017 the right wing doctor of theology and ethics Ann Heberlein started

a Kickstarter Crowdfunding to write a book about

the controversial topic of rape and culture.

In spite of the wishes of the establishment, there was

a popular demand for knowledge on this topic

and the Kickstarter campaign received over 200.000 Swedish crowns in less than 24 hours.

During the night Kickstarter decided to cancel the campaign

with the pretext that the topic of the book was in violation of the site's rules

and constituted some form of hate-crime.

Heberlain encouraged her backers to Swish her the money instead, to secure the financing for the book.

In light of how Kickstarter handled the situation

the Swish campaign quickly received over a million crowns in funding.

This type of situation is sometimes the result of "the Streisand effect"

and it is a trap that adherents of censorship regularly fall into.

the Streisand effect got its name from the epic singer Barbra Streisand

when she tried to sue a website for publishing

a freely available picture of her house

which made it go viral.

The result of Streisand's effort to censor the picture

make it one of the most viewed photos on the internet in 2003.

After accidentally Streisanding up the book

the establishment media now needed to manage a situation in which an undesirable perspective

was at risk of gaining wide-spread traction

therefore, a series of "controlled detonations" was performed

by publishing a few similar stories to the contents of the book, a few weeks before its release.

Other than that, the book was never mentioned.

The throws the light on a specific aspect of the establishment resentment of crowdfunding:

anyone can both produce media

and also get funding to publish and distribute it - outside their control mechanisms.

The establishment media likes to talk about the digital platforms as overrun by

lies, hate and superficiality

but regularly also display obvious lack of knowledge

of the fact that it is mostly long-form content

which is pulling audiences away from the formulaic and unengaging content and packaging

and to the digital grass-root channels.

Few know or would have guessed that some of the moste viewed YouTube videos

of 2018 would be a three-hour-long Jungian biblical exegesis

conducted by three men in their mid 50's.

"would you agree that there are things"

"written into these religious text that are"

"unambiguously unacceptable"

"viewed through a modern lens?" "unambiguously unacceptable"

"viewed through a modern lens?"

Put that in your superficial pipe and smoke it.

The collectivist sentiment still permeating Swedish society

is struggling to accept the untamed discourse of the digital realm

Powerful forces are string to maintain a homogenous hegemony of opinion

where public discourse is kept unified and ideologically pure.

This overriding aim is made legitimate through a socialist analysis of power structures

in which a Roma beggar is befitting support and empathy, while a crowd financed citizen

with an unwanted opinion can be labelled "beggar" as a Dunce-hat

deserving to be mocked and derided.

The collective narrative has a low tolerance for divergent perspectives.

They use any means available to precent their existence.

In the US, they have started using the term "deplatforming".

to describe a mainly leftist mode of action to silence ideological opponents.

When undesired opinions can no longer be prevented from being expressed

they attack the channels through which communication is conducted

and work to convince them to shut down or ban the users they wish not to be heard.

This is "deplatforming" - the seclusion of undesirable opinions

from public digital platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Using this tacting, it is possible to maintin a nominal freedom of expression

as censorship is outsourced to platform owners, with indirect threats of

punitive and legislative reprisals.

A particularly backwards line of argumentation often bandied about in these circumstances

is the fact that "freedom of speech does not mean that people need to listen to you"

which is ironic as colorful rabble rousers like Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos

both had large numbers of people who WANTED to listen to them - before they were deplatformed.

The other aspect of the left wings hatred of crowd funding is economic.

The establish an artificial conflict between

"Taxation and justness" on one hand

and "Donations and unjustness" on the other.

This attitude is exemplified by the Swedish electro pop act "The Knife"

in their 2003 hit song "You Make Me lIke Charity"

in which they state:

"You make me like charity, instead of paying enough taxes"

and there by dismiss the support of civil society in favor of centrally planned redistribution.

This mode of reasoning is examined in detail in Lars Tradgärdhs and henrik Berggrens

excellent book "Is the Swede a human? communality and independence in modern Sweden" from 2006.

The book presents a model for how different cultures perceive the independence of the individual

through the relations of family, community, government and individual.

America is characterized by great trust in civil society

"the local community"

but trust in government is comparatively low.

In Germany, they put family first and government second, as a protector of the freedom of the individual.

In Sweden, people reject both family and community

as potentially unwanted dependencies

and instead place the government in the role of defending individual independence.

The welfare insurance policy is preferable to trust before family or friends on a rainy day.

The hate of crowdfunding is in some degree rooted in this mode of thinking:

The community has been given an unfair and immoral influence

through the voluntary economic power the digital age is providing.

The distribution of resources is supposed to be done by the government

and is a power that should not be squandered on the whims of individual citizens.

This attitude is also expressed in the left wings inability

to crowd fund their causes at all.

They are good at demonstrating and signing petitions

but incapable of making real things happen.

The concept os "solidarity" evaporates the moment the words

"Put your money where your mouth is"

are uttered. Most likely both because they are generally less well off

and desire socialism by virtue of the vested interest as being

on the receiving end of the redistributive process

but also by an unwillingness to be financially involved as an individual in project perceived

as a job for the government to handle, by collecting money

from someone else.

The problem with socialism, is that sooner or later you run out of other peoples money

as Margaret Thatcher expressed it.

"There is no such thing as public money"

"There is only tax payer's money."

But crowdfunding exists, and is an advantage for civil society.

Which now has resources to make itself heard.

For the establishment and the etatists the only remaining options are to undermine

and to deplatform this loathed and undesired communication.

This is why they hate crowdfunding.

This is why we have a civil war of information.

Do you think a free and wild democratic discourse is preferable

to a tightly controlled

version where unwanted voices are silenced, sabotaged and banned?
