Team Ingebrigtsen is approaching the big highlight of the 2018 season: The European Championships in Berlin.
For the first time, the three brothers will compete for the same medals.
With strict discipline and faith in themselves they're not afraid to set themselves high goals.
They want to become the best in the world.
Something would be wrong with the world if you'd be able to keep up with the best runners just because you got up one morning.
The world doesn't work like that.
You don't understand any of this.
Yeah I do.
The tough and disciplined training regime of their father, Gjert, has helped them reach great results on the track.
[At the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland] Come on, Henrik! Yeah!
[At the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands] Henrik and Filip, both European champions in the 1500m.
It's surely a Norwegian bronze? Yep, it's a medal!
And Filip is a World Championships bronze medallist.
[At the 2017 World Championships in London, UK] Yeah! Yeah!
After dealing with a lot of injuries in the past few seasons, Henrik is working on returning to his fastest speed.
The biggest challenge is to hold back so I don't get injured again before the European Championships.
Filip is in the best shape of his life.
I think I'll be able to win a medal at the European Championships this season. I also think I can threaten the Norwegian record on the 1500m.
Come on, Jakob! Look at him go! Holy fuck, he completely destroyed them!
That was the easiest thing I've ever done. LOL!
And the younger brother, Jakob, is breathing down their necks. Closer than ever to his older brother's level.
At the European Championships he'll finally have a chance to take one more step towards realizing the dream he's had since he was a young child.
[Jakob, 11 years old:] My biggest dream is to become a better runner than Henrik.
I might be able to beat him when I'm in my early 20s. Yes! I'll beat him then!
Jakob, run that 160m now.
Jakob has two big championships this season.
In a month he's competing at his very first European Championships. But first it's time for the Junior (U20) World Championships in Tampere, Finland.
[Elisabeth, girlfriend]
The races at the Junior World Championships this season will easily be my most prestigious ones so far.
A lot of great runners will be competing, but my goal is to try to win a medal.
How do you see it? How do you feel about tomorrow?
I never 'feel' anything when it comes to things like this, I keep it as realistic as possible.
I feel...if we're going to talk about feelings… I feel like he's well prepared and ready to face the mental challenges ahead of him.
This is a step for Jakob on the road towards the European Championships. It gives him championship and race experience.
It'll help him feel a bit less nervous when he's standing in front of a crowd of 25 000 people in Berlin in a month. That'll be quite a different experience.
Ready, set, go!
That was a good jump!
That was a really good jump!
And there you go…
...using your left foot as the take-off foot.
Wow, that was a good jump!
Really great!
Turn your head to the side, no this side. There you go.
Doesn't he look great?
You look great, Willam!
I need to take a look in the mirror.
Haven't you checked the mirror yet? Look at this!
Does it say "Jakob" there?
It does say "Jakob", but your reflection is mirrored.
Are you already feeling nervous?
Me? Of course.
Jakob starts off with the 1500m.
Remember that the riskiest phase of the race is when you have to start moving towards the front of the pack.
(Inaudible reply)
You know that, right?
Mhm.
Keep away from the other runners, okay? Don't pass anyone in the curves. Don't position yourself in the middle of a group. Don't take any chances, keep it safe!
What often makes us even more nervous is Jakob's stoic calm. The other boys are also like that.
They're not particularly talkative before races like these, and that makes us worried.
Because then you start thinking: Are they keeping to themselves because something is bothering them?
Or are they just acting like that because they're in their zone, focused on what they're doing later that day.
Use your head, Jakob, don't do anything stupid.
Keep running all the way to the finish line, okay? Don't-*....okay? (*I assume he means no showboating, but he doesn't finish his sentence)
I guess I'll let him be…
Jakob! Don't cut into someone else's lane, okay? No nonsense like that. Fuck…
What I'm really looking for as a coach is feedback from the athlete like: "Relax Dad, we got this!" Right?
It would be nice if they could just remind me of that once every hour.
Jakob! Jakob! Jakob! Jakob!
The 17-year old Jakob is competing against the world's best U20 runners. He'll face some tough competition.
This is different from the European Junior Championships. He's not the biggest favourite here. He's an underdog in this company.
There's a lot that needs to go right for him to medal here.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the brilliant Norwegian European (Junior) champion.
Woo!
So, they're underway.
You're doing well, Jakob!
Come on, Jakob!
Go Jakob!
Come on now!
Come on, Jakob!
Jakob!
Come on, Jakob!
Come on now, Jakob!
Jakob!
Jakob!
Yeah, he's in a good position.
And as they hit the home streak, it's Ethiopia leading. Kenya second and third. Ingebrigtsen is coming as well.
It's shaping up to be a really good finish in the 1500m.
Come on, Jakob! Come on, Jakob!
Ingebrigtsen is there, don't discount the Norwegian!
Beat him! Beat him! Beat him!
Who is gonna be the winner? I think George (Manangoi) is gonna do it! He's a double World (Junior) champion!
Ingebrigtsen second, (Justus) Soget third! A fantastic race!
That's great! Amazing!
Cool!
Woo!
It was only through his running prowess and luck that he managed to medal.
No.
What a messy race, Jesus Christ!
That was really great!
Yes, that was really great!
It was a mess, he should've won.
He won a medal, Gjert, that's very impressive. I'm really happy.
Well he's not.
To be able to go home with a silver medal is…-
I can tell just from looking at him that he's not happy about it.
Sure he is.
Not even a little bit.
My goal was to win a medal here today. I managed to accomplish that goal with my silver, so I'm very happy.
I'm hungry now.
You're always hungry.
Yep.
Elisabeth and Jakob don't get to spend a lot of time together during championships.
But they've gotten dispensation to have a lunch together before tomorrow's 5000m.
So these three guys all have better times than you?
What's your PB again? 13:35? And he's ran 12:55* (*Selemon Barega's PB at the time).
Haha, yeah.
That's completely crazy!
He's the best one.
Having Elisabeth around makes everything extra enjoyable.
Naturally I want to share this vital part of my life with her.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Did you really have to take that chicken piece?
Doesn't it look tasty?
Yes.
Help me get it!
No! I'm not helping you steal from me!
Elisabeth is the most important supporter of my career.
It feels really great to have her there in the stands when I'm competing.
(Jakob teases Elisabeth)
Stop it!
If there's anyone in the world I'm looking to impress, it's Elisabeth.
Jakob's next race is the 5000m. This is a distance he doesn't have a lot of experience with, and it's a distance that's dominated by the Africans.
The Africans have been lying under those trees every single day.
They just keep moving around depending on where the shadow is.
The Kenyans, Ugandans and all the other Africans are putting on heat cream (ointment that relieves muscle pain).
Do you want to use that?
No.
The 5000m will be a tough challenge for Jakob, especially when it comes to the mental part of it.
Theoretically speaking, the Africans are so dominant that just attempting to beat them takes some boldness.
The 5000m runners competing here are the best 5000m runners in the world.
This race shouldn't cost Jakob too much.
If I can already tell by 2000-3000m that it's not 'his day', I'll stop him, take him off the track and call it a day.
That way we'll leave this city with a medal and some good experiences. There's no need to cause unnecessary damage. That's not going to happen.
On the track, the 5000m final. It features the world leader, Selemon Barega...and Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Jakob!
Jakob! Woo!
Jakob!
And away they go!
Now in the front, it's two Kenyans, two Ethiopians and a Ugandan.
He's not paying attention to what's happening! He's completely asleep! He needs to follow that group!
Follow that group, Jakob!
Those are some fast people. I wonder if Jakob can advance a few positions.
What on earth is he doing?
He's already ruined his race in just one lap!
Well that was a big failure.
Among the leaders we have the three fastest men in the world in U20 level. And it'll be interesting to just see how far away from the rest that group goes.
He's falling farther and farther behind. Exactly what wasn't supposed to happen, happened.
This is just complete nonsense, we can just go home.
It's so fucking agitating that he manages to fuck it up like this.
And Jakob Ingebrigtsen attempts to try and close the gap on the front group.
Ingebrigtsen, having seen them go away, has caught the East Africans up.
Holy fuck! Did you see that?! This is what sports are all about.
He managed to get back up there!
And Ingebrigtsen of Norway, just breaking up the East African dominance in this group!
It's Ingebrigtsen vs Africa!
It's a real footrace between them now! Look at Ingebrigtsen!
Home straight now! A dramatic finish in the 5000m final!
Barega is dretching. Ingebrigtsen is coming on the inside! And on the outside Zakayo takes it for Kenya!
Waithaka second! Ingebrigtsen third! And Barega is fourth!
He won a fucking bronze medal! Holy shit! Woo!
That race will make the history books, it's one of the best Norwegian track performances ever.
How was this possible?
I...I'll have to watch the recording of the race to get another look at it.
Does the bronze on the 5000m mean more to you than the silver on the 1500m?
Yes it does, considering these are the best 5000m runners in the world. It means a great deal to me be able to win a bronze here.
And you're going to improve even more before the European Championships?
Yes, I hope to improve every day. I'm looking forward to that.
[St. Moritz, Switzerland, three weeks ahead of the Europeans Championships]
With two medals from the U20 World Championships in the bag, Jakob returns to altitude training in St. Moritz with his brothers.
This is their home base through all of summer. They'll be staying here until the highlight of the year arrives: The European Championships in Berlin.
We're in the clouds.
I've always wanted to be in the clouds.
For the first time, all of them will be starting and competing against each other in the same championship.
We're getting close to the championship, do you feel nervous?
Me? No.
Oh really?
You're probably the most nervous one, Filip. You're the one with the most at stake.
I might have the most to lose, but I've done it before, so I know it's easy.
You've lost before?
Won.
Oh.
It's likely that two of us three will do well.
What do you mean by that?
Well, it's difficult to get all of us to succeed.
Okay, you and I win, Henrik. Filip can be the loser.
Predictions for the 1500m: Gold (Jakob), silver (Henrik), bronze (Filip).
You're giving me the gold?
And the 5000m: Gold (Henrik), silver (Jakob), bronze (Filip).
We'll see.
Nah, I'm just messing with you.
Henrik and Filip are both former European champions on the 1500m, so I'm pretty sure they'll medal.
It's really cool for me to be a part of this and to be among the runners that are fighting on the highest level.
There's a lot that needs to go right for the Ingebrigtsens to sweep the podium.
Just talking about it sounds crazy, but yeah, it's definitely a possibility.
I hope that either all three of them win medals, or none of them win medals.
I mean, I hope that everyone wins something, or that none of win anything.
But it's very unlikely that none of them win any medals. I can't see that happening.
The three Ingebrigtsen brothers are the fastest middle distance runners in Norway.
And the internal rivalry has always been a driving force.
Even though Henrik has been injured for a while, he still holds the family record on the 1500m.
I've justified my situation and struggles by telling myself that I'm better than them. I just need to find my way back to that level.
Henrik has had a few years to prepare for the day I beat his Norwegian record now.
He knows the reason we run fast is because we're always pushing each other to do well.
We're always striving to beat the person with the best results.
It would be less motivating to be doing this if the three of us weren't in this together. There would be fewer goals for us to aim for.
We always want to beat each other and keep pushing each other to become better.
Ahead of the European Championships, Filip and Jakob have been invited to compete at the prestigious Diamond League meet in Monaco.
They're aiming to break new records.
The Norwegian record might be broken here, everything seems possible for Filip!
And Jakob is easily keeping up with Holuša as we enter the penultimate stretch.
Jakob is going to set an incredible European Junior (U20) record, but how good will Filip's race be?
It's the top three finishers from last year's World Championships that are entering the last curve together!
Filip looks really strong, he's got a determined look on his face! Jakob is sprinting behind him!
Jakob is plowing through the field!
He's not far behind his older brother! Pay attention to the clock, guys! 3:26, 27, 28, 29! 3:29!
It might be a new Norwegian record! Two fantastic times! Filip's unofficial time is 3:30.01.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen has arrived. What do you say about that?
They finished in third and fourth place! Holy shit!
3:30.01! It's a new Norwegian record!
Haha! He just missed the 3:20s!
And what about Jakob? 3:31.18, Gjert! 3:31.18!
Henrik Ingebrigtsen had the Norwegian record in 3:31.46, and now he's only the third best in his family!
[St. Moritz, Switzerland, two weeks ahead of the European Championships]
Jakob beats his personal record by over four seconds.
Back in St.Moritz, the balance of power among the brothers has been turned upside down.
And there's only two weeks left until the European Championships.
Ever since I beat the family record there has been this unspoken respect from Henrik and Jakob.
We've always had this kind of inside joke to motivate the other two. Where whoever holds the family record on the 1500m gets some perks.
Like when we're at training camp or something like that, that person doesn't have to get his own lunch etc.
After many years of dealing with Henrik's 'terror', both Jakob and I have surpassed him.
I'm the worst runner in the family now, so I'm just going to stay behind them and let them do all the work throughout the session. I'll just take is easy.
I'm really motivated to reclaim my family record next year.
It's a prestigious title, and now I'm the one hunting it. That might be a more favourable position to be in.
Be careful, Henrik!
I'd be happy if we all just retired right now.
It would be cool to be able to sit there at the retirement home and be like: "Oh really, you only managed to run the 1500m in 3:31? Well, I ran it in 3:30! That's way faster!"
There will be many future family get-togethers and other opportunities where I'll be able to remind them of that.
It feels completely crazy to be the second best runner in the family.
Ever since I was a little child it's been a dream of mine to be able to reach Henrik and Filip's level.
So it means a lot to me that I've finally been able to take that step this year.
Please take it easy. Don't increase the pace! Don't pick up the pace! Filip!
They're currently in an extremely important phase where they're preparing their muscles for the European Championships.
That's not the time to be pushing hard in training. You follow the program.
Gjert has planned their training sessions ahead of the European Championships down to the last detail.
It's important that the brothers keep their lactic acid levels under control so they'll be able to quickly recover.
I don't want to see any lactic acid levels above 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2. If that happens I'll give them a piece of my mind. We're not having that.
All of you have the same test results after your 8 intervals, that's unbelievable! Incredible!
Jakob started on a very low number, Filip on a high one and Henrik somewhere in the middle. But they all finished with the same results.
Their bodies have synchronized.
I don't understand how that's possible. Inconceivable.
Don't tell anyone! That was astonishing!
It went well.
Wow, should I buy that one?
Oh shit, that one is awesome!
When are you getting your motorbike license, Jakob?
I have to turn 18 first.
I bought my bike before I got my license...but you probably won't pass the test anyway.
Sure I will.
You don't have the coordination that's required to pass…-
I'm getting that one!
You can't have a cool bike like that! You're full of bullshit!
Yeah, but it's cool.
I think this one would suit you better, Jakob.
Hmm? Haha! Damn, that one's expensive!
You can add training wheels and stuff like that.
What the hell...
And you can keep your school supplies in the back.
Hello?
Hell, Ingrid! What did you measure today? What was your lactic acid level?
I didn't measure my lactate levels.
Why not?
I forgot to.
Did you run six 3-minute intervals with one minute breaks in between?
Yes.
Hmm.
I try to Skype the people at home every day, around William and Ingrid's bed time.
It's important to me to follow Ingrid's training closely.
She should feel like she gets the same degree of supervision as her brothers. She shouldn't feel like she's treated differently.
Alright, good night.
We'll talk tomorrow, I'll call you around 7.00am. You guys are awake by then, right?
Umm…
Good night.
...okay
Good night.
[Zürich, Switzerland, 1 week ahead of the the European Championships]
After 7 weeks of altitude training, Gjert and the boys make a stop in Zürich.
Here they've planned an important training session, ahead of their flight to the European Championships in Berlin.
We're doing a 10x300m here, it's probably the toughest training session this summer.
There are a bunch of joggers messing around here. Jesus Christ…
You cannot be jogging in these lanes.
Okay.
You have to jog on the field, or you have to jog outside.
Okay.
Because it's dangerous, they run too fast.
You're going to run ten 300m sprint intervals. 42 seconds per sprint. If you're feeling really great, you can push even harder on the last four sprints.
They'll have to conserve their energy to make it through the training session without tiring out.
An unsuccessful training session can in a worst-case scenario put their performances European Championships at risk.
41.46 on your first sprint. That wasn't very wise of you, Filip.
What?
Slow down, take it easy!
My turn!
(Filip and Jakob arguing about what positions they're running in)
What on earth are you doing? Huh?
40.04, Henrik?! Fuck! Are you trying your best to ruin this? What was that about?
We'll have to start from scratch. Jesus Christ!
Jakob, can you pace this correctly? Please?
They're really fucking this up.
This makes me feel really bad. It's going to ruin everything. They ran way too fast.
They weren't supposed to reach those speeds until the last intervals.
Was that one just as bad?
Perfect pacing.
Ok. What was the time, Jakob?
42.40.
Is your session already ruined?
It was ruined from the start.
No, you ruined it yourself. Well that's just fucking great!
You were running at your max speed! For fuck's sake! You lack the speed foundation to handle those kind of speeds!
Here you go, Jakob.
You were keeping a world record pace.
You were running at a world record pace on your second 300m sprint!
No, that was even faster than the world record pace!* (*40.04 per 300m=3:20.2 on 1500m) 41.00 is the world record pace.
How fucking smart do you think that was after just finishing your altitude training? Jesus Christ!
We're three different people, on three different levels, with three different training foundations.
But you were running even faster on the sprint interval you paced than what he should be doing at his level!
How fucking smart was that when I told you to do the opposite?
A single interval has no significance. It doesn't matter.
What if that single interval was exactly what pushed you over the edge today?
That's exactly why you were meant to be taking it easy in the first sprints and work your way towards faster times.
Why can't you make me a training program that suits me instead of Filip and Jakob?
It does suit you!
No!
It would if you didn't run so fucking fast!
That's bullshit. You're a broken record, you keep bringing up that damn speed.
You're not the coach here, and thank God for that. You're speaking nothing but nonsense. It's all bullshit.
[The European Championships in Berlin, August 2018]
We've arrived at this season's biggest highlight: The European Championships in Berlin.
Per usual, in important championships, a big delegation of people have travelled here to support Team Ingebrigtsen.
Tone and William, the rest of the siblings, girlfriends, grandparents, in-laws and friends are all there.
Warm-up, (speed) drill, two negative split runs (progressively faster), 10x200m intervals and a 5 minute jog as cool-down.
[Svein, friend of the family]: Okay, we'll do those 200m intervals right over there. Back and forth on one stretch, okay?
Yeah.
This won't just be a vacation for Ingrid.
Even though her season has ended, she still trains twice a week.
Today she's doing some intervals in the park.
Green light.
Svein is a former athletics coach and was Jakob's gym teacher for many years.
We'll do it like this: I run every interval with you and let you run a bit ahead of me.
That way I can adjust my speed to yours and always be observing you, okay?
Yeah.
Okay, let's start.
It's really nice of Svein to come with me to parks and places like that, where it can be dangerous for a little girl to be all alone.
You're doing well, Ingrid. 35 seconds.
Your technique looks good.
3, 2, 1, go!
The reason we train even though we're on a vacation is because you can't make up for the training you didn't do.
It's just like sleep. You can't make up for lost sleep.
Ingrid is unique. She's determined, has three brothers that she looks up to and really wants to follow in their footsteps.
And with a talent like hers I think she'll get very far.
33 seconds. That one was a bit faster, but your technique is still good.
Yeah.
My plans for the next few years are just to train, improve, and become a good runner like Jakob, Henrik and Filip.
Henrik, Filip and Jakob are making their preparations for tomorrow's qualifying races at the athletes' hotel.
With the two fastest times in Europe this year on the 1500m, Filip and Jakob are big favourites to win.
They will all be running in each their heat, and Henrik is facing the toughest competition.
You and Jakob will easily qualify, the question is whether or not I can do the same.
Nonsense, none of us will qualify without racing.
Sure, you have to race. But you're so much better than the rest that you can do ten mistakes and still go through.
While I can't afford a lot of mistakes.
Ten mistakes?
Yeah, eight or ten mistakes.
I've always had a bit of a hard time in the qualifying heats.
You can really embarrass yourself there.
Yeah, you can really mess up. Everyone are expecting all of us to go through.
That's what's so cool about this championship. There can be many surprises.
Hip hooray! Woo-woo-woo-woo!
I can feel my heart beating faster and faster the closer we get to the start of the first heat.
It's way too exciting.
The 1500m is always the worst in that regard. There's so much that can happen there.
I have three children in the same event, that's a horrible position to be in for a mother.
Your mind starts racing: "Well, since that one performed well, another one might fall. One might…"- You get what I mean?
And then you'll have to be happy, sad, compassionate and so on. It's difficult.
This will be exciting.
Henrik doesn't say anything.
Henrik and Jakob are very focused on their tasks.
Henrik knows he's facing a somewhat hopeless task considering the physical condition he's currently in.
He's not good enough to keep up with the very best runners here.
It's important that you try to make wise decisions, Jakob. Okay?
In principle, you're so much better than the rest that it should be a piece of cake to get to the final.
Take it easy, chill. Don't keep accelerating, don't end up in fights for positions. Okay?
Filip is feeling invincible.
But you know what they say. Pride comes before a fall.
I think you need to head in. The 'last call' was two minutes ago.
To be on the sideline at the European Championships, World Championships or Olympics is just as hard every time.
This time it'll be even harder, since we'll have three of them competing.
Some might succeed, others might fail. You'll need to be there for all of them.
In championships a lot of things that you can't control happen, you'll have to deal with that right there and then.
But there's nothing I can contribute with. I'll be in the stands cheering like everyone else, so there's nothing I can do about it.
Henrik is the first brother to race.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen, the European champion from 2012. Silver in 2014, bronze in 2016.
He's running his second 1500m race in two years after returning from all his injuries.
The three best in each heat will automatically go through to the final. They can also qualify on time.
This will be really tough for Henrik, poor guy. I feel really sorry for him right now.
And off we go!
They're running so slowly in this heat that it's unlikely that any of them will qualify on time.
In that case only three will proceed, and remember that we have two of the best runners in Europe in this heat: Chris O'Hare and Jakub Holuša. That might just leave one spot.
This is just silly, I think he's already lost his chance to proceed.
There goes my dream.
Holuša is passing on the outside with Henrik on his heels, this will be a long second last curve for Henrik Ingebrigtsen.
Let's see how his speed holds up here.
Come on, Henrik!
Come one, Henrik!
Come on! Come on, Henrik!
Homiyu Tesfaye is challenging Henrik now, he'll have to be careful so he doesn't get boxed in!
But that's exactly what happens! He'll be forced to wait for a chance to accelerate!
Holuša is looking to his side. Henrik is in trouble! Will he show his finishing kick in the last few metres?
He will! He's passing Holuša! Will Holuša be eliminated!? Henrik is through to the final!
Yes! He did it!
Yeah! Woo-hoo!
Henrik made most of us nervous by waiting so long, but he did it!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Henrik showed his experience there.
Henrik! Henrik! Very well done!
You know what? That was one of your best races ever, tactically speaking. You're really great at making moves like that!
That's one down! Yeah! Woo!
Go Filip!
Astrid, how do you feel? Are you okay?
I'm excited, but I'm alright.
Yeah, this should go fine.
Yeah.
As the reigning European champion, and the European runner with the fastest time this year, Filip is a huge favourite in his heat.
Come on, Filip! Come on! Come on, Filip!
This race hasn't cost Filip Ingebrigtsen much so far, and hopefully he can find his way out of that crowded group.
Oh no! Someone takes a fall! That's exactly what can happen in these situations!
Filip also fell!
Oh no, no, no, no, no. The reigning champion is down!
Filip just fell! Filip fell!
Oh no! Fuck!
Was that Filip? Fuck!
Filip!
Oh no!
Oh come on...
He was tripped straight into the ground for fuck's sake!
Something dramatic always happens in races like these! He's really far behind now!
He's hitting the 'turbo button'! Will he be able to make it through here? What he's attempting to do here seems almost impossible right now.
Look at him go!
Come on, Filip!
In theory, a top 6 finish might be sufficient, can he pull that off?
Yeah, he still has one more lap to work with.
He's approaching the field at high speed, still calm and composed. What can Filip manage to do here?
He's trying to make use of the inside rail here, and passes a few people!
This has cost him. He lost many seconds in the fall and there are strong runners in this heat.
Marcin Lewandowski and Charlie Grice should be able to beat Filip now. Lewandowski is in the lead, but Filip Ingebrigtsen is still able to finish strong.
He makes is to the final even with a fall! He's in fantastic shape! It's completely unbelievable that he managed to do that!
Oh wow! I've never seen anything like this before!
It's like I said yesterday: He can make it through with one fall, but he can't make it though with two. So that went fine.
3:40 with a fall? That's pretty decent.
It shouldn't be possible to pull off something like that, but he still does it!
What a dramatic race!
I have Henrik with me here, he's been watching the race. What happened, Henrik?
I think Filip just won the 1500m gold there.
I've never seen anyone fall on the 1500m and still win!* (*Filip finished third in his heat, but I guess Henrik meant that he'd proceed to win the gold)
I didn't know that was possible! Jesus Christ, imagine being that good! Haha!
Well thanks a lot, Ingebrigtsens, you've scared the wits out of half of Norway!
What happened there, Filip? We nearly had a breakdown there.
I mean, you know what the 1500m is about by now. Luckily I'm better than ever and that saved me today.
We can see there's some blood running down your leg there, you didn't get any significant injuries right?
Well, would you look at that!
Oh no!
Oh shit, I'll have to stitch this up!
Yes!
I didn't realize it was that bad, it cut right through to the bone!
Yeah, that doesn't look good.
I'll have to head to the doctor.
Yeah, you do that.
Did you get dizzy?
No, I'm fine,. What really matters is that you're fine.
...and that the 17-year old Jakob Ingebrigtsen will do well.
No one younger than him has ever participated in the 1500m at the European Championships.
It's Jakob's turn now. He's also capable of making it through with one fall. But not with two.
Come on, Jakob!
Come on, Jakob! You're doing great, come on!
He's gradually accelerating, the race is in his hands.
He's 'gliding' his way to the front and chooses a much easier and safer path to the final than Henrik and Filip.
It's been an optimal race for him. He looks around and safely makes his way to the final!
We have three brothers in the final! It's the best possible outcome, despite a bit of drama!
Yeah!
That went very well.
All three of them!
How does it feel to be one of three brothers in your first championship final on this level?
It's completely crazy. We've been thinking a lot about the possibility, so it feels really special that our dream has come true.
Come on, Line (reporter)! You have to hurry up now!
Is everything okay, Gjert?
Yes, everything is good.
Filip's race made you a little nervous though?
I got a little sweaty up there.
I'm extremely happy so far. Time to start dreading the big final. The first one of the boys' two finals.
Now I'll just have to be careful so I don't spoil who I want to win. Nah, I'm just messing around.
Can you believe that it was possible to get all three of them to the final, Gjert?
Jesus Christ, I'm so sweaty now.
Did I do that? Or were you already sweaty? The latter, right?
Okay. One down, two to go. Isn't that what they say?
While Filip is at the doctor to find out how seriously he was injured after his fall, the press is eager for an update on his status.
I needed some stitches.
Is it uncertain whether or not you'll be able to run?
No, I'll be running the final.
What thoughts were racing through your head when you were lying there?
On the ground?
Yeah.
I was thinking: "This is exactly what wasn't supposed to happen".
It was crucial to get back up as quickly as possible and…-
Are you confident ahead of the final? Are you still the favourite to win?
Yeah, I would say so.
Thanks guys, we're done here.
Who do you think that can be, Olivia?
It's Dad!
Hey there, my little friend. Hey, there you are!
It was torture to watch you out there. You waited so long to make your move.
I was just sitting there thinking: "He's not going to make it!"
And when you kicked I was thinking about how awful it would be if you finished fourth...and then you...ah…-
I started to cry. Just talking about it almost makes me tear up.
The race was so slow that no one expected that my top speed would be good enough to go through.
No.
But I'm still now as good as I want to be, as I used to be.
In reality it's completely crazy that you have…-
Are you just going to mess around?
No.
Yeah, I've come a long way since last year.
Yes.
It's starting to look like something.
She was cheering for you. She was shouting: "Go Dad!"
She did?
Mhm.
But when I asked her who would win, she said "Mom".
Go Mom!
Haha, no that's not it...
Go Dad!
Go Dad!
Yeah, well done!
Yes! There we go!
With three sons in the final, Gjert gets to take a long-awaited breather.
I can't feel anything.
Well, I guess I'm dead then.
You have to feel there.
And he gets some time to focus on being a dad.
I can't feel anything there either.
Are you messing with me?
It's because those boobs are in the way.
Is that so?
Yeah.
You can still feel my heartbeat.
I can feel my own heart.
But not mine?
No.
Gjert has made the decision that we're going sightseeing. On a sightseeing bus.
Since we're here in Berlin, there are some attractions we'll need to check out.
But knowing him, he'll be too impatient to stay on the bus for long, so we'll have to see how…-
Okay, let's head out. Come on.
Do you want to sit on Dad's lap?
Yes.
We're doing sightseeing in the wrong place.
Where were we supposed to go?
We're supposed to visit Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall.
We can just walk to Checkpoint Charlie and get a look at that damn wall.
Yeah, I'm not really sure what we're doing here.
Do you know that the boys are racing against each other today?
No. Is it a team competition?
No. It's every man for himself. They're all competing against each other.
They're all competing against each other?
Mhm.
I'm rooting for all my older brothers.
Yeah, and if Ingrid had been there, you'd be cheering for her.
Is this bus even moving?
No.
I'm starting to get sore from sitting.
Checkpoint Charlie. That's where we're stepping out to touch the wall.
I have an appointment at 1:45pm.
Are you kidding me?
We'll have to stop down there.
Where are you heading at 1:45pm?
I'm getting a shoulder massage.
Why did you even join us? Gjert! Are you stepping off the bus here or what? I don't understand any of this.
Yes. Bring him with you.
Come! Come!
I'll have to run!
This always happens. It's so ridiculous.
What should we do now?
Maybe we should walk back to that wall.
It's the old wall that separated East and West Berlin.
I see.
Should we go touch it? Then you can tell everyone in kindergarten that you've touched the old Berlin wall.
That's not something a lot of the kids in kindergarten have done.
No.
Just go touch it.
Yay! Now we've both touched the old wall!
It's the evening before the 1500m final. There the three Ingebrigtsen brothers will fight for the same title, for the first time in their careers.
If I beat one or two of them, I'll be happy.
Don't be so insecure.
I'm actually more worried about you. You're the weak link here, Jakob.
You've never been in a European...uh...what's it called? A European Championship final!
They're having quite the discussion over there...
We could've been extremely unlucky yesterday. Filip could've been unable to get back up, and Henrik could've failed to qualify.
We could've been standing here with only Jakob in the final, that would've been a shock.
If that had happened, all of us would've had to step in as shrinks. We wouldn't be having a good time right now.
Okay!
I think they're all feeling capable of winning a medal tomorrow.
Just to be able to feel that feeling...that it's possible…- It must be an amazing feeling to feel that you're that competitive.
An autograph from you would be amazing, I got your brothers' already.
Good luck for tomorrow, guys, and on Saturday!
Thank you!
Henrik, Filip and Jakob will be competing in front of a crowd of tens of thousands of people to establish who's Europe's and their family's best runner.
Filip and Jakob are clear favourites to win the 1500m. But I know that I'm capable of fighting for a medal on a good day.
Jakob is a real threat to anyone in the world the way he's currently running. I think he'll be the toughest one to beat.
That's a bit reassuring actually, cause I compete against him every day at training. I always know what to expect from him.
I believe in myself. I'm confident and know what I'm capable of. I have one of the fastest times in the field on the 1500m this year.
Naturally I also hope that Henrik and Filip do well, but I hope I beat them.
When we're standing there on the starting line there's nothing we do to help each other apart from wishing each other good luck.
The atmosphere is electric in there right now.
My dream is that Henrik manages to win a medal. I know that would mean the world to him.
Naturally I hope Filip wins the gold, but I hope Henrik and Jakob also do very well. It would be a dream come true if Filip was the first to cross the finish line.
Woo!
I hope that Jakob wins the gold, but I know Filip is in extremely good shape.
So I hope he'll be able to medal. It would be magical if that happened.
They've entered the track.
We have three brothers here who are all on the hunt for medals.
We've never seen them together in a big race like this. Healthy, fit, injury-free. That on its own makes this a historical race.
Here's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the youngest athlete to ever compete in a 1500m at the European Championships.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen has won three straight medals in the 1500m at the European Championships.
Filip Ingebrigtsen, the reigning champion. He has the fastest time in Europe this year.
On your marks!
Watch out! There's lots of pushing right off the bat! Nearly lead to a disaster.
They've all dropped down to the tail of the field, they'll be waiting for the race to pick up before making a move.
It makes it harder for their competitors to know where they're at without having to look at the big screen.
Filip! Filip! Filip!
This is where all their training will pay off.
Henrik is accelerating on the outside. He usually positions himself next to the inside rail.
Go! Go! Go!
Come on, Henrik!
Come on, Jakob!
Come on! Come on, Jakob!
Filip Ingebrigtsen, passes Henrik and positions himself first among the boys from Lura in Sandnes.
Jakob joins him. 700m to go and the race is starting to shape up.
Jakob looks behind him and sees his older brother, Henrik. The group that was at the back of the field is suddenly at the front.
All of them are at the front of the field.
Come on now!
Three brothers at the front. Jakob is in the lead. We haven't seen him in this position in any races this year.
He's never taken the lead so early in the race. It's a 17-year old on the offensive. He's setting the pace ahead of his more successful brothers.
Come on, Filip! Come on, Jakob! Come on, Henrik!
Jakob Ingebrigtsen leads ahead of his two older brothers as the bell rings. One lap to go!
Come on, Filip!
Is this the last lap?
Jakob! Come on now, Jakob!
Come on, Henrik!
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is going hard.
It seems like this race is in Filip's hands now, but he must watch out so he doesn't get boxed in by the Briton on his outside.
Filip Ingebrigtsen is playing with fire here. Same goes for Henrik, who's already boxed in!
He's in the lead!
Come on, Jakob! Come on!
Jakob is pushing hard from his front position! The 17-year old is attempting to become the youngest male athlete to ever win a medal at these championships!
His brothers are already European champions, will the 17-year old be able to do the same?
He's built a solid lead before coming into the final stretch!
Come on, Jakob!
Look at Jakob Ingebrigtsen go!
Watch out for the Britons! The fast Briton, Jake Wightman, is closing in on Jakob!
Come on!
Will Jakob Ingebrigtsen be able to pull this off?!
Yeah!
Huh? Who won?
Jakob!
I can't believe it!
He's the third brother that becomes a European champion in the past six years!
He's 17! No one younger has ever participated in the 1500m, and he takes the victory!
Gjert Ingebrigtsen has produced another European champion!
And he wins it after pulling the field for two laps! This boy has no limits!
What an amazing runner Norway has been blessed with!
Jakob! Jakob! Filip!
What happened to Filip?
He finished in 12th place.
12th?!
Filip Ingebrigtsen only finishes in 12th position.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen takes 4th place. It's the first time since 2010 that he doesn't make the podium at these championships.
Go Jakob! Go Jakob! Go Jakob!
He was 11 years old when Henrik became a European champion.
Yeah, he was 11 years when Henrik won, and now the little brother is a European champion just like his brothers. What do you have to say about that, Henrik?
He never stops to impress me. It was an amazing performance by Jakob.
I'm completely in shock.
Are you more shocked about Filip than you're happy about Jakob?
Yes. What on earth happened there?
I could keep speculating about what went wrong, but I wasn't good enough today.
When I realized that I tried to help Jakob by using a tactic we had discussed with him earlier. So that the rest of them would be forced to take the long way around us. And that…-
He would've probably won regardless, but that might've made it slightly easier.
I didn't really understand what was happening…
I felt like they were all attacking really late, so I looked behind me, but nobody was closing in on me.
Then I saw the lap counter over there displaying a "1" on it* and almost started to slow down. (*The officials made a mistake, it was supposed to say "0" as it was the last lap)
But then I thought to myself: Oh shit!
You thought there was one lap left?
Yeah, I figured there had to be one more lap left. It was really stupid of me...
Oh my God, I'm 17 years old and I've already reached the goal of my career in a way.
I can only improve from this point on, so…-
I don't know what to say, I'm speechless.
I'm in shock, Jesus Christ. This is…-
I have no words.
He can win the 5000m tomorrow and make it a double.
He doesn't look tired.
He isn't tired.
You have three sons that are European champions!
Yes, imagine that!
Congratulations, William!
That was great.
Well done, are you happy about your performance?
No.
Why aren't you happy about it?
I mean...fourth place…I wasn't able to do what I set out to do.
Yeah, but come on now, Henrik. I think you did well, but you know what to do tomorrow.
Yeah, I'll make Jakob work for it.
Are you going to win?
Yes, I'm winning it.
Yep.
The brothers will battle it out again tomorrow on the 5000m.
The injury Filip sustained in his fall in the qualifying heat turned out to be more serious than he originally believed.
Today we got some insight into what really happened with Filip Ingebrigtsen.
We've looked into it a bit closer, and it seems like I've bruised one of my ribs.
It hurts when I breathe. And it takes some breathing to run a 5000m…-
The European Championships have ended for Filip. He'll have to experience his brothers' final from the stands.
One of them will definitely win a medal today.
What happened to Filip was really unfortunate. Especially considering how extremely well-prepared he was for this European championship.
It's really sad that he got into this situation. It's a part of this game though.
You have to stay sharp, be lucky and get through to the final without wasting too much energy. But I feel really sorry for him.
I wish I was an athlete that was always able to be at the top of his game, but that's not how it is.
But I still feel like our family's '1500m throne' belongs to me.
I've ran the fastest, way ahead of the others, and my results have been consistent throughout the season.
My performances have been better and more consistent than what any of us have ever been able to achieve in the past.
Jakob keeps improving every day however, so the gap keep shrinking.
I'll just have to keep working hard to keep him behind me.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen! The youngest athlete to win a gold medal in the European Championships' 84-year old history.
Can he make it a double?
Henrik looks really focused. He's proven that he's back on a high level after returning from major injury struggles.
It would be amazing if he'd be able to put the icing on the cake with a fourth consecutive medal at the European Championships.
And there we go, the 5000m is underway!
All in all, 2018 was a good year for Team Ingebrigtsen.
If I were ever to set a goal for myself, it would be to have three athletes on the starting line at the European Championships. For the first time in history.
In their best shape.
And I accomplished that.
Two Ingebrigtsens in the lead.
440m left to go!
Come on, Jakob!
Come on, Henrik! Come on!
Team Ingebrigtsen have given us insight into the hard work behind their great performances.
Three brothers, all European champions on the 1500m. All aiming to become the best runner in the world.
Holy hell they're going hard! Look at them go! Take a look at this, boys!
Their father Gjert has dedicated his life to realize his children's goals and dreams.
It looks like this will be gold and silver!
Tone, the dedicated mother, is always there on the sideline cheering for her children alongside the rest of the big family.
Henrik!
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is speeding up! Not even Henrik can keep up now!
Look at Jakob go!
It's hard to believe how great this 17-year old is!
Henrik will take the silver!
It's a magical performance from Jakob!
Henrik takes the silver!
Yeah!
They're completely dominant! They controlled the race from start to end!
It's completely incredible!
It's so crazy…
A double victory for Gjert! Nah, I'm just kidding...a double victory for the Ingebrigtsens!
We're a seperate nation, you know that, right? Incredible!
It's difficult to comprehend how he was able to do that, but Jakob has been living like an elite athlete for many years already.
Ever since Henrik won his gold at the European Championships (in 2012) I've known that it would actually be possible for me to accomplish this.
Already back then I started developing the kinda silly mindset that I one day would be the best.
If you just try hard enough you'll reach your goal eventually.
Everyone in the team we're apart of deserves a lot of credit for our success.
If you're not allowed to believe in yourself, you'll never be the best.
You must be allowed to have great faith in yourselves and to be selfish. It's always been that way in our family.
At the same time you shouldn't be condescending or mean towards others to put yourself in the spotlight.
Everyone can learn something from Gjert and his boys.
Europe has never seen a middle and long distance runner at this age perform this well before.
Henrik is happy, he's won medals at four consecutive European championships.
It was a completely surreal feeling to cross the finish line with Jakob in first and second position.
When all your work results in a medal, you feel a sense of relief. All the work I put in wasn't wasted.
The tale of Team Ingebrigtsen doesn't end here.
New championships lie ahead of them.
It's pretty unusual to have three brothers that all are European champions.
When they cross the finish line it makes me believe that it'll be possible for me to do the same one day.
How was it to share your victory lap?
It's a dream come true for both of us. It's completely crazy.
I mean...two guys from Sandnes…
What can you say? Wow…
I don't really have dreams of my own. I share my children's dreams, and they share their dreams with me.
That's my purpose in life, and I'm happy about that. Whenever they're happy and accomplish their dreams, I also accomplish mine.
[A big thank you to the Ingebrigtsen family. You rule!]
