Asexual and Sexual Reproduction - Duration: 5:10.

Captions are on! Click CC at bottom right to turn off.

Follow the amoebas on Twitter @AmoebaSisters and Facebook!

When I was 6 years old, I went through a phase where I was really into plants.

My sister never really went through a plant phase although to be fair she was also 2 years

old at the time, so she was kind of in to everything.

I wanted to have lots of plants that I could water and take care of.

But my plant caring skills were…not so great…so only some plants were safe.

A cactus perhaps.

But you get sick of cacti.

One day, it so happened, my dad brought home a spider plant.

As usual, the way I imagined a spider plant turned out to not exactly be what a spider

plant was---but---I was also very happy it wasn't a cactus.

"Take really good care of this spider plant and it will have little baby plants," my

dad said.

"Then you can plant the plantlets and they'll grow into new spider plants too.

"It'll be fun," he said.

Let's just say I think my dad may have underestimated my dedication with this.

Spider plants reproduce by making new, identical baby spider plantlets.

The baby plants are genetically identical to the parent plant, meaning, they contain

the same DNA.

A clone basically.

You can plant the plantlets and ta da, new spider plant.

As a kid, I didn't realize that what I was seeing at the time was asexual reproduction.

Asexual reproduction requires only one organism and results in offspring that are genetically

identical.

Uniform!

No genetic variety!

And many times there can be an advantage that this can be efficient and fast since only

one organism is involved.

Asexual reproduction also occurs with very simple organisms, like bacteria.

These prokaryotes literally split into two in a process known as binary fission.

Many single-celled eukaryotic organisms---like protists---do this too.

Another type of asexual reproduction that starts with "b" is budding.

A very small, amazing animal called the hydra can reproduce by budding.

That means they literally just bud an identical offspring right off of themselves!

It falls off and grows into a new hydra.

So in the spider plant example, this was asexual reproduction.

But it's important to realize that not all plants can reproduce asexually.

In fact, spider plants themselves can reproduce another way.

Spider plants, and many other plants, can undergo sexual reproduction.

In fact, lots of organisms can---some fungi and some protists, many plants, many animals.

Sexual reproduction involves the uniting of gametes, which are reproductive cells, to

make a new organism.

If you're talking about animals, typically these gametes would be known as a sperm cell

from the male organism and an egg cell from the female organism.

Gametes typically have half the number of chromosomes as a somatic cell.

So in humans, sperm and egg cells each have 23 chromosomes.

When they combine, they can produce a new cell, a fertilized egg known as a zygote which

would then have 46 chromosomes.

This fertilized egg can continue to divide to make more cells and more cells...oh look,

this fertilized human egg cell is a blastocyst now.

Yeah, it'll keep dividing from there.

Now while that was an example of gametes uniting to make a new human, realize that all new

organisms that result from sexual reproduction have the potential to be genetically diverse.

In sexual reproduction, the offspring are not clones.

They received genetic information from their two different parents.

And gametes themselves tend to be different from each other due to independent assortment

and crossing over which happens when the gametes are made--- in a process called meiosis.

Check out our meiosis video for more about that.

So the gametes are different from each other, and they combine to make a unique organism.

Now sexual reproduction can be more time consuming because it does require two gametes finding

each other and uniting.

A little more complicated than asexual reproduction when, in many cases, you can just…split.

So then what is a benefit in sexual reproduction and why could this even matter?

Well different genes can mean different expressed traits.

And different expressed traits could be beneficial in the case of environmental changes.

Let's consider these grasshoppers.

Let's say the vegetation present changes due to a dry season and now some colors of

grasshoppers have better advantages than others in blending in…which means perhaps better

advantages from hiding from predators.

Those grasshoppers with the advantage potentially could have higher fitness.

But see, that variation is present in the first place because of sexual reproduction.

There are definite benefits can come with variety.

Well…that's it for the amoeba sisters and we remind you to stay curious!

When The Pawn Stars Got Seriously Cheated - Duration: 4:31.

With one of the biggest reality shows on television, the Pawn Stars crew has struck pawn shop paydirt

more times than even they can count.

But not every deal they make on the show is a perfect play, and when they get ripped off,

they get ripped off big time.

Here are the worst moments when the Pawn Stars got seriously cheated.

Shoeless Joe Jackson fake

In the season six episode "Say It Ain't So," Rick shelled out $13,000 on a book he believed

might contain the authentic signature of baseball great "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.

Rick couldn't have been more excited during the appraisal:

"Do you know how rare it is to find his signature?"

"No, not at all."

"It's the rarest sports signature, period."

But despite the seller's questionable certificate of authenticity, and Rick's own reservations…

"Of all the signatures in the world this is the most faked."

...he took a gamble and bought it anyway.

After shelling out the cash, Rebecca, his book expert, told him that the signature was

likely a fake.

So Rick then sent it out to another authenticator who reiterated the bad news: not only was

it a forgery, it was a laughably bad one.

So much for that home run, Rick.

Willie Mays strike-out

In a 2012 episode, Corey made the blunder of forking over $31,000 for what he believed

was a game-worn Willie Mays San Francisco Giants uniform from 1961.

But the red flags with this one were apparent from the jump.

For starters, the uniform was pristine—which Chumlee noticed right away:

"This doesn't look game-worn.

Willie Mays was a badass, he was sliding around on the dirt and the grass.

I'd imagine there'd be a bunch of stains on it."

Good observation, Chum.

Also, the seller had no authentication paperwork whatsoever, which is never a good sign.

But Big Hoss took a gamble and boy, was he all kinds of wrong.

Not only did Gold & Silver Pawn fail to retail it at a ridiculous asking price of $80,000,

but they only ended up getting only $19,200 for it at auction around two years later,

a nearly $12,000 loss.

And it gets worse.

Hauls of Shame reported that the uniform was never worn in a game by Mays, because it never

even belonged to Mays.

That technically means Corey didn't get as ripped off as he could have, but we seriously

doubt he's happy with how that deal went down.

"School's in session.

You just got schooled."

Wells Fargo heist

In a fifth season episode called "Corey's Big Play," Rick made the unusual mistake of

buying something he was unsure of: a 19th-century Wells Fargo strongbox containing an old prison

ball and chain.

And "unsure" is putting it lightly.

"Ok, What are you trying to say?"

"It's fake."

He still dropped $450 on the box, only to have his hopes of a profit shot down by expert

and show regular Mark "The Beard of Knowledge" Hall-Patton,

"This is a complete fantasy piece.

It's a complete fake."

"G------- Rick"

Leave it up to the Old Man to rub it in.

Auction losses

If the World Famous Gold and Silver Pawn Shop can't retail an item, they always have the

option of sending it to auction.

That's what Rick tried to do with several big ticket items including a 1940s Indian

Motorcycle with a sidecar and a Vic Flick owned and played Fender Stratocaster, which

he put on the block at Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, he took a hit for "$29,000 on the motorcycle, and $35,000 on the guitar."

Ouch.

He must not have done well with his other items either, because he reported his total

loss at around $100,000.

"Sold most of my items, I'm getting my ass handed to me.

Ahh, it doesn't feel good."

Blindsided by the bayou

When the History Channel launched Cajun Pawn Stars in 2012, the boys from Las Vegas apparently

felt blindsided by the move.

According to TMZ, the network had promised no spin-offs would be produced.

The History Channel called the new addition a "southern spin" on the original, and they

weren't kidding.

"I got some gator, I got some raccoon.

Which one we gonna cook?"

Neither the network nor the Harrisons commented publicly on the tension, but former Pawn Stars

manager Wayne Jefferies said he was the mole that talked to TMZ, and he said he got fired

for it.

Looks like in this case, Pawn Stars didn't get ripped off by a customer — they got

ripped off by their own network.

"See ya later, dork."

What Went Wrong With CM Punk - Duration: 6:11.

On July 4th, 2006 a future star walked down the ramp for the very first time on live

WWE television to cut a promo. And 11 years later we consider this former

superstar to be one of the most entertaining superstars in WWE history.

Ladies and Gentlemen today we are going to talk about former WWE Champion and

current UFC fighter CM Punk.

This is What Went Wrong

It's no secret that CM Punk was very successful while working for Vince McMahon although Punk worked

for Ring of Honor and TNA prior to WWE Punk really became a main staple in the

wrestling world while working for Vince. The often outspoken superstar showcase

incredible skills inside the ring and on the microphone there was a lot to love

about CM Punk and there was a lot to dislike.

Now ultimately as a fan I want

to say that I was a very big fan of CM Punk his work by far was some of the

best I have seen in a very long time. He truly took the WWE by storm.

He made things look believable and he showed that he was the real deal.

In fact he brought some sort of edginess and rawness that we haven't seen in such

a long time and that made us believe some of the things that CM punk was

talking about on the microphone was truly how he felt.

we saw the passion.

Now here's the problem

many people will discuss the CM Punk's legendary World title reign but more

people will actually talk about the drama that surrounds CM Punk in WWE.

You see when Punk left the WWE he made it known that he had a negative

experience he bashed the upper management, he bashed the medical staff

and all the terrible backstage politics. Now we got a fast forward a couple of

years later. CM Punk holds a 0-1 record in the

UFC thanks to a quick loss to MMA up-and-comer Mickey Gall. Now I actually

bought this UFC pay-per-view rooting for Punk. I realized that Punk is someone who

does things for the challenge and not the money and I was able to assume this

because well, we all know how much money would be involved with Punk returning to

WWE. But, he has yet to return. Punk recently noted in an interview he

actually has no interest in into pro wrestling and he's currently

awaiting a response from Dana White just to see if he could even compete again in

a UFC Octagon. Now to me the most likely answer is NO. But when you're CM Punk

and you try something new I think he's going to keep grinding.

So why did so many things actually go wrong with CM Punk? Well let's talk about

the fact that he burned his bridges. CM Punk was very outspoken he did not like

the fact that he had high profile matches that weren't main eventing

WrestleMania. He also didn't like the fact that other people were getting paid

more than him, when he was having higher profile matches. And let's discuss the

whole thing going on with Ryback. It's very clear that CM Punk and Ryback had a

lot of issues and a lot of that had to do with Ryback working stiff. So why did he

burn his bridges he feels the need to let people know what really happened

and he did it all he did it on Colt Cabana's podcast and the minute that CM Punk did

this, it almost made it impossible for WWE to ever sign CM Punk again. Now in

the wrestling business people say, "Never Say Never" and although it's very

possible that CM Punk one day could potentially return in pro wrestling as I

said earlier he has no interest it makes you wonder is he going to stick with MMA?

Is Dana White going to give him the opportunity to fight again? These are

things that really pop up in everybody's mind and on top of that if the answer is

in fact "NO" does CM Punk return to pro wrestling in the future? Well I don't

want to say no. I don't want to say never. Because like they say, "Never say never."

but ultimately we have to be honest and we have to accept the fact that this guy

does not have a passion for pro wrestling anymore.

So, will he accept that phone call from Vince McMahon or Triple H? Will he walk

down the WWE ramp one more time? When you lose in the way that you did to

Mickey Gall, it's just not that impressive and you may not be ready for the big leagues.

But, it's very easy to hate on a person when they're going down and we should

accept the fact that CM Punk tried something so new and so different and

although he failed I think it's easy to say that this guy has heart.

And that's why he should return a Pro Wrestling. Vince McMahon has done some crazy things

when it comes to bringing people back. Hulk Hogan has come back.

We've seen Sting return or make his debut to WWE. And we even saw Ultimate Warrior return.

Now even Kurt Angle's back. So, it makes you think if some of these guys can talk

negatively about the WWE, at some point CM Punk should be welcomed back.

Vince McMahon is an incredible business person and I know that we've seen some crazy

moments with CM Punk after the fact of his WWE career, but I think ultimately CM

Punk belongs in a WWE ring and we will see him back one day.

It wouldn't be GFW, Lucha Underground. If CM Punk does leave the UFC

What Went Wrong could eventually become Right.

And that's a return to the WWE.

Vegan Around the World in Six Months - Shae & Marissa - Duration: 13:47.

Hey, it's Shae.

Hey guys, it's Marissa, and I am one of the 2016 VeganTravel

Around the World contest winners!

We are here, going to answer a couple questions about the trip!

We were crying, overly excited, just kind of in disbelief.

Even though we had already been planning the trip as if we'd won, it was still super, super surreal

to know that we were about to travel the world, especially when I had

never even left the country at that point, so it was all brand new.

So leaving Portland was weird. I said goodbye to my family, knowing I

would say goodbye to my friends for all of 2016. But I was so excited,

and I had, I had no idea what was coming, but I was ready, no matter what.

Shae met me in Baltimore, we got to the airport and I was more than ready at that point.

And then we landed in Iceland I was like, "This is my very first foreign country, ever."

London, I would say, had the most options for vegan food.

London and Sydney just mostly because, not only did they have a lot of regular vegan food places

and vegan options, but they also had a lot of the, like, specialty vegan foods.

So we could find, you know, vegan burgers, vegan pulled pork, vegan cheesecake.

My favorite fully vegan places... Cookies and Scream in London, for sure, and I also really loved

Cafe Vinyl in Iceland. Those are both kind of bakeries, but maybe I'm just a big dessert person.

Farang in Stockholm, Sweden just because that was my first ever multiple course, vegan, like, gourmet meal.

I couldn't even believe that some of the stuff we were eating was vegan, it's just, it's so cool!

Speedo's Cafe in Australia, super low-key on the beach in Bondi, but they have the best vegan

pancakes I've ever had in my entire life, I said that the second that I tasted them.

The place I probably struggled the most in terms of finding vegan-friendly anything was China.

I went to Shanghai and I would say the language barrier was a huge factor in this.

Definitely Croatia. I felt like we did a lot of grocery eating.

And then Italy actually was our very first challenge. Although Italy is one of

my favorite places that we did visit, there weren't a lot of actual vegan restaurants.

Oceania and Europe versus Southeast Asia is a little bit different

because Southeast Asia, we found that it was actually cheaper to eat out than it was

to buy groceries. And you can buy fruit and stuff and still eat, you know,

a whole food, healthy diet in Southeast Asia like Thailand and tropical places.

So a lot of times to save money while traveling, we would do our own personal grocery shopping.

It's a really good way to save money in a lot of the more

expensive countries in Europe. Little tiny snack things that you can just

easily have on hand, especially on things like trains and ferries

where you have a bit more space, sometimes we would make sandwiches, rice cakes

with peanut butter or hummus.

Sticking to rice, beans, tomato sauce or oatmeal in the morning.

It's, you know, easier than eating out three, four times a day.

So, personally for our health and maintaining that for seven months,

eating in is just a smart option, so having a kitchen is really important.

We usually tried to learn the names of the allergens in the language of where we were,

so that way we could specifically spot those because they were usually bolded on the labels.

Some things have vegan labels all around the world but obviously, like,

even in America not everything that's vegan is labeled vegan.

In Google Translate there's the camera setting that you can

hover it over the ingredients list and figure out what things say.

Great websites that we ended up using were Hostelworld, Airbnb, I never

personally CouchSurfed but I've heard amazing experiences from it from other travelers.

I think a hostel is a really cool way to travel because then you get to

meet more people while you're traveling. They usually have suggestions on

things to do at the reception at hostels, they usually are pretty cool with travelers

and helping you out making your plans. It's really great to just put out there

on Facebook or to your family members where you're going because you never

know who has a family friend or a cousin or a great-great aunt who lives

somewhere around the world where you're going to have a couch that you can crash on.

The Airbnbs are great, we've done entire spaces and private rooms.

Having a host is super cool to be able to get that same experience of somebody who's a local

that can show you around or give you tips. That's also sometimes cheaper doing that.

Hostels are the best thing about traveling, and they're also sometimes the sketchiest thing about traveling.

We always tried to book a hostel that had above an 8 rating out of 10.

So we would just, like, read the reviews, see how the safety was, the cleanliness, things like that

to be able to determine if that's a place that we wanted to stay.

Kitchens ended up being a great perk that you miss when you don't have one.

All of them had Wi-Fi, that's kind of always a top priority for us to make sure that we have Wi-Fi,

we have some way to connect to the outer world, considering we never really had SIM cards on the trip.

It's really fun to hold meet-ups with different vegans around the world.

A lot of times we would just post to Instagram and say, "Hey guys, we're in

London and we're going to hold a meet-up," and we would just see what kind of

response we would get, and then we would organize a place to meet up and just

kind of chat, have a little picnic in the park

and meet people from around the world who share similar interests.

Meeting people is the reason I travel. I love meeting people, I love hearing people's stories,

I love, you know, starting to go on a tangent with somebody about a country

and then going to a different country and hearing their story and realizing

that I want to go there, too, and I didn't have a plan for where wanted to go next

so, like give me ideas and tell me what your favorite things were.

Some of the time some of those people we'd meet at the meet-ups would be so kind to show us around,

show us some of their favorite places, give us recommendations of where to go

and I thought that was really cool because it's more of a local and more

authentic way of finding the best vegan places in that area.

One of my all-time favorite activities that we did throughout the entire trip was

hiking throughout the five towns of Cinque Terre. It was just such a

beautiful hike and it was also really good to just get out there and get

moving after a long day of traveling the day before.

Riding ATVs in the Greek islands, riding scooters in the flooded streets of Koh Phangan in Thailand.

Um, I think zip lining and doing the activities park in Croatia and staying

at the only treehouse in all of Croatia was super cool.

In Sweden, taking the ferry through the archipelago which was beautiful, it was

nothing like I expected so everything was just super surreal.

Driving around Iceland, just because we were driving around Iceland and that's a cool thing to do.

Taking a cooking class in Thailand, an authentic cooking class.

Surfing in Bali, that was fun!

Hands down, my favorite moment of the entire trip was watching Mamma Mia on the cliffs of

Fira in Santorini, that was just such a magical day.

It was really fun to just get to interact with the animals of different cultures,

and also just get to see how there are companies and foundations all

around the world working to better the animal welfare and better what's going

on in their area. So, for instance, places like Amsterdam, they have a big problem

with stray cats so they had the Cat Boat to help rescue cats there.

But then there are places like Santorini where they have really big issues with the donkeys

carrying up tourists' bags up the hills, so they rescued some donkeys.

I loved SAWA, which was in Santorini. Take an ATV to the middle of the island which is

a 10 minute ride, fun ride on an ATV. You get to a beautiful place is

taking care of the animals that are being harmed in that touristy area.

Look at the ocean on one side, and look at the mountains on another side and you see

the impact of everything that's happening.

The first thing that we did to make sure that we were budgeting our money

safely was giving ourselves a daily allowance for what we were allowed to spend,

including our accommodation. Sometimes we'd go over that, sometimes we'd go under that,

and that could carry over if we wanted it to, but generally we had a good idea

every single day on how much we were allowed to spend.

I think transportation is the thing that'll get you the most. Once you're in Europe it's decently cheap to

fly around or train around or bus around.

Budget airlines, but budget airlines will also try and get you with a lot of other things like small bag sizes or

really low baggage weight or nothing is free on the flight, including water.

Going with the flow seemed to be the cheapest option for us.

The first main challenge that we faced was that we got our bags raided in a hostel in Germany

and we had everything locked up in our bags but unfortunately we didn't

have them in a locker at the time because there weren't lockers actually

in our room. Make sure that there are lockers in your hostel because even if

you have your bag locked up, someone can rip it open with scissors, and be,

make light of the situation. It happened, luckily nothing of ours got stolen, and if

something did get stolen that's kind of what your backup fund is for, to kind of

help you in those unfortunate situations.

Then the second challenge that we faced was that

we actually had someone that we met in Croatia try to break into our

hotel balcony at 2:00 in the morning, so we woke up and had a stranger at our

balcony door and we freaked out.

So just to be safe, try not to tell anyone your exact, specific location.

Keep your safety in mind, keep your belongings safe, things that, you know, you shouldn't have to do

but sometimes you do.

Traveling is the best way to invest all the money that you

earn doing whatever else that gets you there because there's nothing like it.

There are so many textbooks I've read in class that couldn't explain the things that I've seen.

I really want to go back to Italy, I really want to make it my mission to learn

Italian, so I would love to go back and learn Italian in Italy. And I just fell

in love with their country. Also Greece because it's beautiful. And I would love

to go back to Thailand to visit the islands because when we were there the

weather wasn't that great, so it'd be cool to see Thailand whenever it's really really nice outside.

Somewhere that I would go back to is Sweden.

I loved it. Bali, loved it. And Thailand.

Some places that we didn't go that I really really wish that we had gone and I really hope

I get to go to in the future, first being South Africa. That was originally on our

itinerary, it just became a little too expensive to get there. Also Vietnam, I just

think that's a really cool culture that I want to explore. And the Philippines.

I have family there and I really want to see how they live, I really want to see their local culture.

Somewhere I would love to go, that I didn't get to go to this time, that I was hoping I could have was

Switzerland. Burma (or Myanmar). I met a lot of people who went there that absolutely loved it.

Egypt. Maybe as a solo traveler, I don't know if that's the best thing but hearing other people's experiences

will help me decide if I want to do that.

I was always really looking forward to doing solo traveling, it's something I've always

wanted to do just because I've heard amazing things about it from, you know, other solo

travelers that we come across or just people who have solo traveled that I know.

I heard it's, you know, an amazing growing experience and I wanted that out of this trip

and I feel like I got so much of that after I went solo. It forces you to do

things and say yes to things and I had my birthday alone solo traveling in Korea

and I had the best birthday ever. People are more willing to talk to you, I feel like,

people are so welcoming, so kind, they understand, especially if they're other solo travelers

which you'll find so many if you're solo as well. You'll come across

some people that have so many similarities to you, the amazing people

you'll meet, the amazing places you'll see.

Thank you all so much, it has been a blast and I hope to see you around the world sometime this year.

Thank you guys so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed listening to some of the stories for my

trip around the world, and I hope maybe some of these tips help you with planning your next travel adventure.

Hello I'm Michael from Dollar Loan Center.

I'd like to take this time to show you how easy it is to get funded online for a signature loan.

First visit DONTBEBROKE.COM.

Next you will see a button that says 'APPLY ONLINE NOW'.

Click this button and it will take you to our application page.

Select your loan type, your state, and then the type of funding you would like to receive.

We're doing online funding for this video, but you can also choose in-store funding if

you prefer to pick up your money at one of our area locations.

Once these three options are selected, a sliding bar will prompt you to choose the amount of

funds you wish to borrow.

Once you are at your desired amount click continue.

This next page will ask you for information.

Your name, date of birth, social security number, Address and other information so we

may process your loan for approval.

Once all your information has been entered click continue.

Note if you are a returning customer you can log into our Members Area with your username

and password to skip this and the next couple steps.

Next you are asked to enter your bank routing and account number.

You can find this information on the bottom front of your bank issued checks.

Our next page asks for your Income and employment information.

Income from alimony or child support payments do not need to be disclosed if you do not

wish us to consider those a source of income.

Are you a United States Veteran?

Federal law provides protections to active duty members of the Armed Forces and their

dependents.

To ensure that these protections are provided to eligible applicants, we require you to

sign one of the following statements as applicable.

If you are not a veteran, you can click no.

Then read the Notice of Financial Privacy Rights, and select yes or no.

Now you're on to our Reporting Authorization Page.

You must agree to authorize Dollar Loan Center to report information, to any major consumer-reporting

agency.

And you must also agree, for Dollar Loan Center to run your credit, for your loan approval.

Next supply us with your digital signature, re-enter your loan amount and click continue.

And that is it!

Your application has been submitted.

of address, a state issued ID to docs@dontbebroke.com.
