The entire automotive industry is changing
and with it naturally also the requirements on new job applicants.
And that is why I think it is really great
that we are also breaking entirely new ground in recruiting
to show them how the automobile on the one hand
and hi-tech on the other
interact here.
Of course, there are no palm trees
between Böblingen and Sindelfingen,
and the Pacific is also a little farther away.
Instead, we have something that, in my view, is much hotter:
namely really cool cars
that simply are incredible fun
and spark emotions!
Hello. How do you do?
Hi.
My name is Molka Elleuch.
Dieter Zetsche.
Pleased to meet you!
Can I call you Molka?
Yes, of course!
Wonderful!
Sounds good, I am Dieter - you are Molka.
Okay.
What did you study?
Electrical engineering at Munich Technical University.
We have something in common then!
Oh, that's great.
Granted, it was almost fifty years ago, but...
Where did you study?
In Karlsruhe. Ah - KIT.
That's right. It wasn't KIT yet back then,
but I am still on the supervisory council there.
Anyway, I believe that is a great choice!
I am studying electrical engineering and information technology
with a focus on embedded systems and cyber security.
Perfect, that way you can make sure nobody hijacks our cars.
Exactly!
What happens when there is a traffic jam?
First of all the navigation system should
make me aware ahead of time
that there is a traffic jam coming up –
to keep me from driving into it in the first place, if possible.
But when I do hit the traffic jam,
I'll already make myself semi-autonomous here.
Oh, wow – I've never seen this before!
Of course, I have to keep my hands on the wheel,
so says the law,
but in principle it can do this all on its own.
It now starts to follow the other traffic,
watches out that it doesn't run over the curb,
and slows down.
We are already quite far advanced in this regard!
What do you consider to be the biggest challenge so far
for autonomous driving?
Ten years ago,
this was practically still science fiction.
A huge step
was provided by artificial intelligence,
by deep learning.
The car is now able to store,
independently learn
and even recognize
patterns in situations it experiences repeatedly.
This means that this car here now knows:
these are cars that are driving around there.
But there are also bicycles,
there are pedestrians, who behave differently,
and it can recognize the curb.
And when we now drive to Beijing
or to New York
– they know that this is a curb
even though it may be a different color.
Is the software modified
for each country?
We have to meet different legal requirements
today of course.
This means we have to take
different actions for different countries to some extent.
But beyond that, when things look different,
again particularly with regard to autonomous driving –
the fact that autobahn signs are blue
or yellow or whatever color they may have in a different country
– or as far as solid lines
and what they look like and other such matters are concerned:
We want to get to a point
where we don't need
to develop a custom software,
a custom algorithm for every country.
Instead, we want cars to learn
independently and recognize:
I am in China
and now such and such rules apply.
What projects are there at the moment, for example?
With regard to cyber security?
Yes, exactly.
Of course, this issue affects and concerns us
across its entire spectrum.
In future, we want to be able to advance the vehicle
through downloads
- we are already capable of doing this in part today:
over the air.
However, it must be ensured
that only we can do this
and that no other party develops it
into a different direction.
A question:
Everything in autonomous cars works on the basis of servers,
for example, peer-to-peer.
One always has to have good network coverage.
How will we will deal with something like that?
That is also a very smart question,
because of course we cannot expect to have constant,
all-encompassing network coverage
in the foreseeable future.
Not here in Stuttgart, nor in Germany,
nor anywhere in the world.
That is why the vehicles need to be
really autonomous to begin with
They must do a top job already
without comminication.
We must have the capability
to send the latest changes in batches.
This means that
if I now have no connection for one kilometer
and then have a connection for a hundred meters,
the new information is downloaded in that time.
All these things are in flow
and that is why our business is so incredibly exciting.
I think this is exciting!
That is definitely the case!
Keep up the good work then!
Thank you very much so far. Thank you very much!
It was just great fun
to see how people from all over the world
are showing an interest in our company.
I believe we have found a great format here,
I believe we have fantastic candidates
and both together
will lead us to success!
