Anything can happen during a live performance.
But with the thrill of showcasing talent live and unedited comes the risk of embarrassing
flubs.
Even the most seasoned live performers aren't immune to the occasional hilarious goof-up,
and thanks to the internet — and videos like ours — they'll now live on forever.
Here are some of the most mortifying.
Simpson's SNL silliness
Ashlee Simpson's 2004 Saturday Night Live backing track snafu was such an epic disaster
not only because it was one of the worst-executed examples of a pretty standard practice, but
also because of Simpson's complete inability to handle the situation.
"On a Monday, I am waiting, Tuesday..."
Instead of waiting for the proper backing track to start, Simpson did this …
Yep.
A little jig, like she was at a hoedown.
Then she just left the stage, leaving millions wondering why she didn't just start singing
her song.
At the end of the show, Simpson blamed her band …
"I feel so bad.
My band started playing the wrong song, and I didn't know what to do, so I thought I'd
do a hoedown."
Simpson later said she decided to use a backing track — for the first time ever — because
she had acid reflux.
Whatever really happened, it remains one of the all-time greatest live TV bloopers.
Shields' Tonys tumble
How many attempts should one make to land an Anthony Weiner punchline in song form on
live television?
According to Brooke Shields' 2011 Tonys flub, the answer is three.
That's how many times she started over before finally sticking the landing ...
"When I'm up on stage there's [gibberish].
I'm gonna try that again."
"When I'm up on stage there are some — I don't know what I'm doing, oh my God!"
" ... there's lot of men who like to watch / In fact, one guy sent a twitpic of his crotch."
Speaking with Vulture a few days later, Shields said of the viral gaffe, "I was beyond embarrassed.
I wanted to give up show business.
I f---ed up.
They counted me in wrong; the TelePrompTer was wrong.
I felt like I was having an aneurysm."
"Nice.
It was worth it.
Totally improvised."
Madonna's uncooperative cape
Madonna is known for staging some of the most elaborate live performances in pop music history,
so when her "cape fail" happened during the 2015 Brit Awards, the pop icon took it pretty
hard.
Discussing the incident on The Jonathan Ross Show, Madge said the tumble was "a horrible
nightmare" because she likes to be "amazing" and "create magic" for everyone.
Hopefully, the legendary songstress has stopped beating herself up over it, because after
getting yanked off a short flight of stairs by her neck and embarrassing herself in front
of millions, she got up and finished the song like a pro.
Talk about amazing.
Bieber's unbelievable barf
Yeah, it's not really cool to laugh at someone getting sick to their stomach, but in this
case, that someone is Justin Bieber, and it's because he drank too much milk, so it's fair
game.
The Canadian pop icon lost his lunch on the opening night of his 2012 Believe tour during
a show in Glendale, Arizona.

The Biebs later tweeted an Anchorman reference as an explanation: "And …. Milk was a bad
choice!"
"Milk was a bad choice!"
Klum's busted bra
Supermodel Heidi Klum made an appearance on The Tonight Show in 2003 to model Victoria
Secret's Fantasy Bra, as well as the matching panties, which, together, were worth a ridiculous
$11 million.
Of course, that all makes for must-see late night TV, except for one little problem ...
"Oh no.
My bra just broke.
I just inhaled and it went kinnuck."
Guest Martin Short and host Jay Leno scrambled to fix it, before finally giving up, at which
point Klum then told a three minute story about swimming with sharks.
After the break, she made her big reveal, and the goof made headlines across the globe.
Carey's Times Square train wreck
On the eve of 2017, Mariah Carey was supposed to perform a medley of her hits for New Year's
Rockin' Eve, but a series of technical issues caused a train wreck of mythic proportions.
"We didn't have a check for this song, so we'll just say it went to number one, and
that's what it is.
Okay."
"We're missing some of this vocal, but it is what it is."
"I want a holiday, too.
Can I not have one?"
Between Carey's almost complete lack of effort, awkward talking over the backing track, and
later slamming the production team for allegedly supplying her with faulty equipment, the show
couldn't have gone more wrong.
"You just don't get any better."
Now that's how you ring in the new year.
