Once upon a time there were two children living in a small woodcutter's cabin in a forest.
The older brother's name was Tyltyl and his younger sister's name was Mytyl.
Their parents were the poorest in the forest.
Christmas was coming soon
but the Santa Claus would never visit their house this year.
On the night of Christmas Eve, a witch came to their room and said.
"My grandchild is very sick now.
Only a happy blue bird can cure the illness.
Can you find such a blue bird for me?"
Tyltyl and Mytyl replied cheerfully.
"Sure we will go and find a blue bird for your poor grandchild."
Taking a birdcage, Tyltyl and Mytyl headed out to find the blue bird.
The first land they arrived in was called "A Land of Memory."
They met their grandparents in the Land of Memory who had already passed away.
"After we die, our bodies disappear
but we are living in your heart and whenever you remember us, we can meet again."
The grandfather told Tyltyl and Mytyl
that they could find the special blue bird in the Land of Memory.
They caught the blue bird there and kept it in the cage.
After they left the Land of Memory, the blue bird turned into a black bird.
Next, Tyltyl and Mytyl visited the "Land of the Night" where sickness, war and other unhappiness existed.
They found the another blue bird here, too, but it died after they left the Land of the Night.
Then Tyltyl and Mytyl visited the "Land of Indulgence"
and the "Land of future" where all babies are waiting for to be born.
The blue bird was found in every area but none survived beyond the land they lived.
"Wake up children! Today is Christmas."
Tyltyl and Mytyl heard their mother's sweet voice.
When they opened their eyes, they found themselves at home.
Their journey to find the blue bird ended.
Tyltyl and Mytyl had never found the blue bird in their journey.
They glanced in the cage and saw a blue feather inside.
"Mytyl, a dove we captured was the blue bird!
We always had the blue bird here at our house!"
Mytyl nodded, and they both smiled at each other.
The witch was trying to teach them where true happiness lies.
Tyltyl and Mytyl now knew that happiness is right there near you
but sometimes you don't realize it unless you pay careful attention to your surroundings.
