Hey.
What the hell are you doin' with that gun?
That's the Last Word!
You know you can trust me.
But the man who gave you that?
He's the one who walked into hell and spread my friend's ashes on the side of a rock.
You.
You are such a punk.
Trying to play both of us, huh?
You are insane.
I dig it.
But ask yourself: What's to stop that man from doing you in like he's done with so
many of friends?
Welcome back guardians.
If you are anything like me, you may have been surprised when the Last Word materialized
out of nothing during your battle with the Hive weapon master, and so today, I want to
talk about why, why did the Last Word just appear.
There is some important information about Shin Malphur in the Letters from a Renegade
lore book, that seems to explain the appearance of the Last Word.
I also recommend watching my other video on a new Weapon of Sorrow first, as it complements
this video.

[intro] So, why did the Last Word just appear.
One of the first reasons that The Last Word materialized during your battle with the Hive
Weapon masters, is that any guardian can summon the Last Word, anyone reborn in the light
can actually summon the Last Word.
Have a listen to A Gift and a Touch of Gray from the lore book, Letters from a Renegade.
It reads, The gun came to you?
How does it feel in your grip?
Few can light its fire, but any reborn of the Light can call its name.
That's a secret I'm bound to hold.
Just know you've earned it, and you've earned it true.
The cannon you hold is yours, but it is no replica—it is a gift from a friend.
I think this can be interpreted in a couple of different ways.
One interpretation is that the Last Word has no master, that the Last Word itself decides
who wields it.
The Hand cannon chooses the Guardian.
It is an interesting way to think about it, that the Last Word uses us, Guardians are
the tool, the Last Word is not the tool, the Last Word is almost controlling us.
This interpretation makes sense, because, when we receive the Last Word, the Drifter
is egging us on, encouraging us to investigate this new Weapon of Sorrow, encouraging us
to walk down Sorrows road and investigate and embrace the Darkness.
You could argue that this quest is about Guardians being pulled between light and dark forces,
that both forces are trying to convert us.
The second interpretation is that, the Last Word is so connected to the Light, that we
can just summon it somehow, especially when faced with the Darkness.
This is what Shin says, that not many can summon the Last Word, but technically, anyone
reborn in the Light can summon it.
I imagine some of this Lore may be grounded in the Golden Gun, similar to summoning a
Golden Gun from the Light.
Of course, the Golden Gun is the same model design as the Last Word.
So that is the first reason why the Last Word appeared, we summoned it or depending on your
interpretation, it presented itself in a moment of need.
The second reason why the Last Word just appeared, is that I believe Shin Malphur has retired,
that Shin Malphur no longer needs the weapon, so it presented itself to someone else.
The reason why Shin, in my opinion retired, is because of us, that he saw our Guardian
balance both the light and dark.
Have a listen to A Gift and a Touch of Gray from Letters from a Renegade.
To me, there was only ever white and black—good and evil.
In you, I see blinding Light.
I see a hero among heroes.
I see the hope you inspire shining through.
But I also see, for the first time—maybe, just maybe—a little bit of gray.
And with it, an end to last rites and final words.
Shin hunted the Shadows of Yor, saying that there was only ever light or dark, and those
who embraced the Darkness needed to be killed.
However, now, he describes seeing a little bit of gray, that things are not white or
black, and that their can be in-between.
This may have changed his opinion about the Shadows of Yor, maybe the Darkness could be
used for good?
Maybe you could still be a hero.
We have fundamentally up-ended Shin's understanding of right and wrong, of light vs dark, consequently,
he no longer has use for the Last Word.
IN my opinion, a lot of lore is talking about this theme, how our guardian seems to be able
to balance light and dark.
See my video on a new type of guardian for more information about this, but I think this
is yet another hint about Bungie adding powers of the Darkness in the future.
So, if we are the grey, why would the Last Word come to us, well, we are obviously also
destined to wield a weapon of sorrow, this quest is about a new weapon of sorrow, or
at the very least about thorn.
So, we will wield weapons of sorrow, weapons of darkness, and weapons of the light, the
last word.
We will have both, we are the in-between.
That concludes this latest destiny 2 lore episode.

word, gray, to represent that there is no black or white.
