Our top story this evening.

The second North Korea-U.S. summit is just around the corner,… and U.S. President Donald

Trump expressed high hopes of a fruitful discussion with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and hailed

Pyeongyang's economic potential.

Our Won Jung-hwan starts us off.

Optimism is growing ahead of the upcoming North Korea-U.S. summit in Vietnam,... scheduled

to take place at the end of this month.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he is hopeful the next summit will be QUOTE

"very much equally as successful" as the first summit in Singapore last June.

"I hope we have the same good luck as we had in the first summit.

A lot was done in the first summit."

These latest remarks come after Trump praised North Korea for suspending its ballistic missile

and nuclear tests,... and returning the remains of fallen American soldiers from the Korean

War.

The two sides had seemingly reached an impasse... amid U.S. demands for more concrete steps

toward denuclearization and North Korean calls for corresponding measures.

However,... Trump said he is in no rush to denuclearize North Korea,… and simply wants

the regime to refrain from testing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles to maintain

good will.

"Now where are we now?

No missiles, no rockets, no nuclear testing, we've learned a lot.

But much more importantly than all of it, much more important, much much more important

than that is we have a great relationship.

I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un."

Trump took a brief swipe at North Korea, saying the Pyeongyang regime had taken advantage

of the U.S. in the past... by taking billions of dollars worth of aid in exchange for promises

of denuclearization.

While emphasizing that it won't happen again... Trump hailed North Korea's economic potential,

dangling the prospect of growth and prosperity... should the regime continue on its path of

peace.

In regards to sanctions,... Trump says they remain firmly in place...

although his cabinet has recently hinted at a more flexible approach... given that North

Korea meets the right conditions.

U.S.-China trade talks to continue next week with Trump hinting at deadline extension - Duration: 0:44.

President Donald Trump said Friday local time,... that trade talks with China are going very

well and the U.S. is closer than ever... to having a "real" trade deal.

His comments came after two days of high-level talks wrapped up in Beijing .

Negotiations are set to continue next week in Washington... aimed at signing a memorandum

of understanding before the March 1st deadline.

Trump also added that he may extend the current deadline to accommodate a deal... and freeze

tariffs on Chinese goods.

Chinese state media The People's Daily reported on Saturday... that the talks have made important

progress, injecting new impetus into the next stage of development of bilateral relations.

Taxi fares in Seoul to go up on Saturday - Duration: 2:15.

Taxi fares in Seoul have been hiked starting today... for the first time in five years.

As you might expect,... it has triggered different reactions from both passengers and drivers

alike.

Lee Min-sun reports.

The new fares took effect on Saturday at 4 AM.

The base fare went up almost 27 percent to 3-thousand-800 won, or about 3 U.S. dollars

and forty cents.

It's the first increase since October 2013.

People in Korea have gotten used to taxis being relatively cheap over the years, so

even though drivers have promised better service, some people are unhappy about the higher fares.

"As a student, this is a huge increase.

It would be goof if they improved their service, but there's no one else in the car with us,

so it's hard to make sure that happens."

"It's about time that taxi fares go up, but it seems rather sudden.

I'll take public transportation more.

They've always talked about improving their service, but it's never really happened."

It might seem logical to expect better service if you're paying more, but drivers say even

with the increase... the fares aren't very high.

"It's still nothing compared to other countries.

If passengers want better service, then they should pay more.

Regular taxi drivers will do just as they've always done and keep refusing passengers."

"When taxi fares go up, we lose passengers for a while.

But I will always try to provide better service, not just because the fare has risen."

The Seoul Private Taxi Association has promised better service in exchange for the higher

pay, like keeping their cars cleaner, drivers not smoking in the car and putting more taxis

on the streets at night.

But many people aren't convinced they will.

The city government says it will check up on their service and has already taken various

measures.

Recently it penalized 22 taxi companies caught refusing passengers.

It also plans to introduce taxis that are for women only.

Meanwhile the province of Gyeonggi-do, which surrounds the capital, is also looking at

increasing its base fare for the first time in five years.

[English] How to Say "rip-off" in Chinese, Japanese and Korean? - Duration: 3:23.

What's up everyone? This week's YouTube video for 3 Languages in 3 Minutes would be an expression for "rip-off".

Let's find out how each of the three East Asian countries expresses "rip-off" in Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

忽悠 (Hūyou) 敲竹杠 (Qiāozhúgàng)

"忽悠" describes something being fluttered by the wind and thus, came to mean lightly phishing and deceiving.

With passive form "被", "我被忽悠了" would mean I got deceived.

"敲竹杠" literally means knocking on bamboo shoots.

There is a historical story to this expression. During the Qing Dynasty,

increased opium imports has devastated China with opium addiction,

so the Qing banned opium imports by law.

One merchant came up with an idea to smuggle lucrative opium into the country by hiding it under the bamboo shoots.

However, when the boat was about to depart, an old man just started hitting the bamboo shoots!

The merchant, afraid that other inspectors would notice,

bribed the old man, saying do not knock on the bamboo shoots next time.

The old man went away, happy with the bribe.

In the end, "敲竹杠" came to mean ripping-off and deceiving others in Chinese.

下駄を履かせる　(げたをはかせる, Getawohakaseru)　 ぼったくられる (Bottaku rareru)

In Japanese, "下駄" is a traditional Japanese shoes, looking like this.

"履かせる" is causative verb for putting on shoes.

Literally it means putting "下駄" on someone else's foot.

Why would putting on "下駄" be considered deceiving?

Korean guys have something called "깔창", and put this on the bottom of their shoes to look taller than they are.

In the same way, putting "下駄" would be to try to make something look better than they are actually,

thus deceiving someone into buying something that is not as good as it appears.

"ぼったくられる" This expression is quite complicated in how it came into being.

"暴利", meaning excessive profit taking,

was made into verb ぼる, and its past form ぼった is attached to the "手繰る" meaning pull off.

In the end after all these transformations,

it literally means taking excessive profits off.

바가지 쓰다 (Bagaji sseuda)

In Korean, "바가지" means large bowl, looking like this.

바가지 쓰다 would literally mean to put on "바가지" like putting on a cap.

It originates from the gamble called "십인계" in 19th century.

How does this gamble work? Each "바가지" contains a number,

and the master calls out a number from 1 to 10.

Gamblers who choose the "바가지" containing the number called out,

takes all the other gamblers money.

If no one gets the correct number, then the master would take all the money from the gamblers.

Thus, "바가지 쓰다" came to describe a situation when no one guesses correctly which "바가지" contains the number, and lose all money.

We have covered how "rip-off" is expressed in three East Asian countries.

"忽悠, 敲竹杠" in Chinese,

"下駄を履かせる, ぼったくられる" in Japanese

and "바가지 쓰다" in Korean.

Knowing these expressions, I hope we don't get ripped off in these countries!

And with two weeks to go until the summit,... a close aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

arrived in Hanoi earlier today... to handle advance preparations for the historic meeting.

A delegation of 12 North Korean officials, led by Kim Chang-son,... who is in charge

of protocol for Kim Jong-un's visit to Vietnam,... landed in Hanoi International Airport on Saturday.

The delegation is expected to discuss and coordinate summit logistics with U.S. officials,...

who are also expected to arrive in Vietnam over the weekend.

Defense Minister Jeong visits Ahk and Cheonghae units in UAE - Duration: 0:46.

Seoul's Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo inspected South Korean troops stationed in

the region as part of the Ahk and Cheonghae units during his visit to the UAE on Friday.

At a shipboard reception to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cheonghae unit's deployment,...

Minister Jeong said the naval unit has served as a guardian in the Gulf of Aden... in carrying

out anti-piracy missions since 2009.

Earlier, Jeong also visited the Ahk unit... which has long been one of the cornerstones

of military cooperation between South Korea and the UAE.

The Ahk unit was dispatched in early 2011... to help train the UAE's special forces and

conduct joint-military drills in the region.
