In 2012, James Rolfe–creator of the Angry Video Game Nerd–was hard at work making the AVGN movie.
So that his audience had something to watch while James was too busy to make videos,
he let Mike Matei–who played the other characters in his videos, made art for them,
and helped in plenty of other ways–make videos for the channel.
Now, Mike's sense of humor is...
...bad, I can't defend it.
I watch James & Mike Mondays on the regular and I think Mike's a likable enough guy and
he's damn good at video games, but he's not really witty.
One video he made on April Fools' Day was about him playing Minecraft
while Inspector Gadget told him what to do and said things like "Minecrap" and "brown bricks".
As far as I can tell, this was a joke about an Inspector Gadget Mario Super Show DVD menu
that annoyingly said "Press Play" and things like that,
which Mike instilled with his signature scatological sense of humor.
He got pretty relentlessly mocked for that video, which he took down.
You can tell he's genuinely embarrassed by it because he took down re-uploads by other people, too.
And, fair enough. If you're being mocked for a stupid and utterly harmless video you made online,
it's your right to keep it off the Internet.
I've been watching SiivaGunner since the old channel not long after the channel started
when it had maybe a thousand subscribers.
I've made three videos because of how much I like the channel: one goodbye video after
the first channel got taken down, one Logan trailer parody using Siiva, Triple-Q, Mr Rental,
and Chad Warden as the characters, and my video about the best things that happened
on YouTube in 2016, where I talk about how SiivaGunner brought people happiness and made
them feel like they were included in something.
I'd usually say all this just to wave my hipster flag and say I was listening to rips before
it was cool or whatever, and "I'm -- I'm a real Siiva fan, unlike these newbies,"
but today, I'm saying it just to prove that I'm not unfamiliar with SiivaGunner and I know
what kind of jokes I should expect from the channel, so let's just talk for a second about
the joke that started the channel, Flintstones.
After Vinesauce Joel's video about the Mario 7 Grand Dad bootleg, the Flintstones theme
became a running joke, but they were making the joke because Joel had succeeded at making
them laugh, and those rips were partly in appreciation of Joel.
The other joke of the channel was that it was–while it was still called GiivaSunner–
a parody and impostor of GilvaSunner, who actually does upload high quality video game rips.
And GilvaSunner was in on that joke.
He'd said that he liked the channel, and even uploaded a medley of GiivaSunner jokes on
his channel that was made by the GiivaSunner rippers before YouTube took down the channel.
Two jokes that were entirely positive about two YouTube channels.
Maybe you know all this, so what am I trying to say?
Well, the recent Inspector Gadget running joke has been kind of uncomfortable to me.
A few days ago, a video was uploaded featuring lines taken from Mike's video, including "Minecrap"
and "brown bricks", and since then, every single rip has been the Inspector Gadget theme
in some form, sometimes with lines from Mike's video.
The profile pic was even changed to Inspector Gadget.
Okay, on the surface, this isn't very different to Grand Dad.
It's a cartoon theme song and some easily quotable jokes from a YouTube gamer.
But the difference is that Grand Dad was a highlight moment from Joel's stream, a moment people thought was funny.
The Inspector Gadget video is something Mike Matei is clearly embarrassed by and doesn't
want people to watch, and it's supposedly funny because it's so unfunny.
And I think that's a really mean-spirited basis for a joke that the SiivaGunner crew has invested in so whole hog.
I'm not even trying to defend Mike, he can stick up for himself.
I just think this isn't the kind of joke that SiivaGunner should be about.
I'm saying all this because I like SiivaGunner.
I know even after saying that, some people will still think it's no different to other
jokes on the channel, but think about it.
How many times was a real person the butt of the jokes,
in a "laughing at them, not with them" kind of way?
The only ones I can remember are the Bean joke,
which genuinely upset people until they flagged the videos as inappropriate,
and the Sans is Ness joke, which was mocking MatPat's Game Theory about Undertale.
The first one I personally don't mind.
Sure, it was annoying to have noise blasted in your ears in the middle of a rip,
but it was really just that, annoying.
It was still occasionally funny.
Where I'm less on Siiva's side is the response they made after taking the Bean rips down.
They tried to make the viewers feel guilty for putting the channel in danger of being removed again.
What does it take for you guys to admit you were in the wrong?
A video linking to a disturbing picture of harlequin baby?
Oh...
As for Sans is Ness, I feel pretty similarly about that as I do about Inspector Gadget.
Except I genuinely liked the Sans is Ness video.
Yeah, that's -- that's my unpopular opinion, I guess.
Do I believe it? No, of course not.
It's Game Theory, the show about how Toads have a parasite on their head and Mario is a psychopath.
But, in the video, he did provide enough evidence to make the theory plausible, and it was an
entertaining idea, and that's pretty much all I ask for from Game Theory.
But, after the stream of Sans is Ness jokes and general hate for MatPat, he didn't make
another Undertale video until his Gaster theory, a video he started by talking about how he
was scared to make another Undertale video after losing sleep from the never-ending hate he got for that video.
He was scared to make a silly Internet video about video games he felt passionate about.
I'm sure that video doesn't buy sympathy from some people,
but I was against the jokes and hate even before he made it.
"So, why am I making the big long video about the Inspector Gadget joke and not about that?"
I hear you yell at your screen in response.
Well, there are a lot of people who make rips for SiivaGunner, and Sans is Ness jokes were
a pretty small minority of the rips I've seen.
But this Inspector Gadget joke is in every single rip that's come out since it was introduced
through a quote, unquote lore video, and it's in the profile picture.
It's completely impossible to miss it if you're watching the channel.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is...
If any of the vast amount of people who make rips for SiivaGunner's watching, please just
give the guy a break and please don't make jokes that are targeting people and ridiculing them.
This isn't Leafy, you're better than this!
I want to hear more of the good rips, things like "Take On Me" in Kirby,
"What Is Love" in the EarthBound Halloween Hack,
Grand Dad, and Robbie Rotten, and Nozomi,
and all the jokes you usually make which are generally positive and not mocking individuals.
What I don't want to hear is spiteful jokes about whichever YouTubers the elites in the SiivaGunner Discord chat think are cringey.
But that's just, like, my opinion, man.
DAN AVIDAN: What was "Castle my asshole" from?
That was a Jon episode, right?
ARIN HANSON: Yeah, it's the Mega Man 7.
DAN: How did that come about?
ARIN: We were -- I mean, it's not a great story.
DAN: Okay...
ARIN: Uh, we were making fun of Mike Matei, who I have since become cool with. So...
DAN: Okay...
ARIN: Uh, not a big deal.
DAN: Right.
ARIN: But uh, yeah.
It was just his style of humor.
DAN: Oops.
ARIN: Damn it.
Um, so I was like, "Castle my asshole, ha ha ha ha.
That's the kind of joke that he would make."
[both laughing]
ARIN: The end.
DAN: Was it used in a sentence? Can you give me, like, some context?
ARIN: No, it was just making fun of the style of humor that he has.
DAN: Oh, oh oh oh.
ARIN: Yeah. So...
Like I said, not my proudest moment,
[Dan laughing]
ARIN: It was publicly making fun of somebody who is cool and I like now.
[Dan laughing]
ARIN: So, thanks for bringing it up. Oh, my controller died.
DAN: Sorry, I should have known. Alright, we'll take it as a sign. See you later, everybody.
ARIN: Oh, okay. Bye!
DAN: Bye, that guy Arin's cool with now.
ARIN: Yeah. Mike Matei, you're alright.
DAN: Yeah, you're alright, buddy.
