Powerful star explosions known as supernovae usually mark the death of stars.But now, astronomers announced

a supernova that exploded multiple times over a period of more than 50 years. It might be

the explosion of a star more massive than any seen to explode before. It might be an

explosion caused by the meeting of matter and antimatter in a massive star's core. 

The Palomar Transient Factory – an astronomical survey led by Caltech designed to find transient

and variable sources such as variable stars, supernovae, asteroids and comets – noticed

this supernova in September of 2014. The supernova was designated iPTF14hls.Analysis of its light

indicated it was what's called a type II-P supernova. As expected, the supernova began

to fade again.

Everything about the discovery seemed normal … until a few months later.

Astronomers with the Las Cumbres Observatory – a worldwide network of robotic telescopes,

directed out of Goleta, California – noticed that iPTF14hls was growing brighter again.According

to them, A normal supernova rises to peak brightness and fades over approximately 100

days. Supernova iPTF14hls, on the other hand, grew brighter and dimmer at least five times

over two years.

Then astronomers went back and looked at archival data, showing this part of the sky. They were

astonished to find evidence of an explosion in 1954 at the exact same location on the

sky's dome. Apparently, iPTF14hls had somehow survived an earlier explosion and exploded again in

2014.

Astronomers are now saying that iPTF14hls might be an explosion of a star more massive

than any seen to explode before.The study – led by astronomer Iair Arcavi, of Las

Cumbres Observatory and the University of California, Santa Barbara – calculated that

the star that exploded was at least 50 times more massive than our sun and probably much

larger. The size of this explosion could be the reason that our conventional understanding

of the death of stars failed to explain this event.

The Las Cumbres astronomers' statement also explained a possible bizarre mechanism for

the explosion of Supernova iPTF14hls. Astronomers said Supernova iPTF14hls may be the first

example of a 'pulsational pair instability supernova. This theory holds that massive

stars become so hot in their cores that energy is converted into matter and antimatter. This

would cause an explosion that blows off the outer layers of the star and leaves the core

intact; this process can repeat over decades before the large final explosion and collapse

to a black hole.

But, the astronomers warn, this theory can't explain all the observations and might not,

after all, be the answer to the riddle of this star. Instead, they say, this supernova

might be something completely new.

That's why the supernova group at Las Cumbres Observatory is still monitoring iPTF14hls,

which remains bright three years after it was discovered.

we got a scooter now (easier than bikes)

we struggle a bit with my french driving license

they don't really let you rent a scooter

but after 4,5 shops we found one that accepted

so we got the scooter for 3 days on the island

we are riding around the island

and we have a map with snorkeling spots

so perfect, we can enjoy it

we also bought some diving google

because we didn't have some , and to enjoy this kind of place you need good equipment

to enjoy snorkeling spots here

now we enjoy the wild landscape and the local road around the island

there are so many goats here

i don't know if you can see them behind me

there are some big and small goats ^^

And most of you guys watching my vids are French

But I'm still hesitating

And I don't know if I won't switch back to English, no idea

And today, I am going to talk about an old French tradition

Saint Catherine's Day

You might have noticed my stunning hat

Let me explain

I turned 25 this summer and my grandma fashioned this work of art for me

But why?

First time my granny talked about that

Was last spring

Aaaand I thought it was a joke

I mean, I studied this old tradition

For my History degree

I thought no one did this old stuff anymore

But no, apparently SOME PEOPLE still do that

No offense, Granny

For I am the eldest of the grandchildren of my family

I had never seen someone receiving a hat for their 25th birthday

But my aunts ensured me that, at my age, they've recieved a wonderful coif

The fact that I'm wearing this hat on the 25th of November at 25 years old

Means that I am old

And still unmarried

Yeah, gotta accept that, at 25 you start rotting, apparently

So, basically, I need to find a husband.

Quickly!

But before, let me explain the origins of this old and sexist tradition

I've put my hat over there

(sorry, microphone) First of all, who is Saint Catherine?

Let's see what tells her hagiography

An hagiography is the biography of a Saint

Relating his/her life and the miracles he/she accomplished

Believe it or not

I also linked a numerised manuscript from the 15th century in the desc

Written by Jean Miélot, that recounts Saint Catherine's hagiography

Don't hesitate to go check it, it's a beautiful item

Catherine was the daughter of the Governor of Alexandria (Egypt)

Under the reign of the Emperor Maximian

3rd century AD

She was originally called Dorothea

When she converted to Christianity, she took the name of Catherine

From the Ancient Greek "katharos", meaning "pure"

It is said that Catherine, despite her young age

Was a great poet and philosopher (that's my girl!)

When the Emperor organized persecutions agains the Christians

She came to him to denounce his actions

And she spoke with such skill

That he summoned 50 rhetoricians and philosophers to prove her wrong

He had promised them a huge reward

If they could triumph over the virgin arguer

But Catherine turned out to be so convincing that she converted the 50 guys.

At once. And the Emperor, outraged, executed them all.

The 50 guys. At once.

Catherine was scourged and imprisoned

People came to see her in her cell, all converted to Christianism by her faith and words

And were executed one by one.

Including the Emperor's wife

He kept having Catherine tortured, but she never complained nor cried

(this guy was defo very nice)

So he asked her to marry him

Well yeah, he was free, he had his wife killed, all good! (LOL)

The virgin refused, saying that she was promised to Jesus

That he would be his one and only husband

To whom she had consecrated her virginity

(sorry mic / bis) Furious, Maximian decided

to have her executed

She was to be shred on a spiked breaking wheel

But when she touched the awful intrument of torture

It shattered in thousand of pieces

So he had her beheaded. Safer.

It is said that angels brought her body to the Mount Sinai

(And apparently put her head back in place ^^"")

The body was discovered there 4 centuries later

With hair still growing and a healing oil issuing from her body.

Those characteristics are proper to a Saint's body

In medieval legends

The people and the Church believed that a Saint's corpse did not rot

And that it even had healing properties.

Not craving for corpse-flavoured medicine?

The fact remains that this was the craze during the Middle ages, and there was a huge relic trade

Every Church wanted its own

Some Saints ended up with 7 toes (on each foot) or 4 hands...

This was quite funny

Well yeah, dishonest people didn't hesitate to dig up corpses

Pretending them to be the remains of some Saints

Selling their bones to make a lot of dough

The story of Saint Catherine is of course a legend

But some historians believe that it's based on a real figure

Hypathia of Alexandria, a pagan philosopher

Murdered by christian fanatics during the 5th century AD

The movie Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenabar, is about her, if you are interested

During the Middle Ages

Catherine is one of the most revered Saints

During those times, people did not believe that they could directly speak to God

He was too high, too important, to be directly concerned

By the mortal's issues

They prayed the Saints instead,

Who, as intercessors, brought the living's words to God

We've seen it before, Catherine means "the pure"

With reference to her virginity

She was a model of purity, faith and chastity

For all the young unmarried women of the Middle Ages

During the 19th and the early 20th centuries

On the 25th of november (Saint Catherine's day)

The single women of 25 years old and more

Used to put a had on the head of the statue of Saint Catherine in their local church "Thanks gurlz!"

Those girls were nicknamed "Catherinettes"

For they were 25 and still unmarried

They used to address this prayer to the Saint :

« Saint Catherine, help me. Don't let me die single. A husband, Saint Catherine, a good one, rather one than none at all »

Eeeeh, for my part

I prefer none than a bad one

Is it alright, Saint Catherine ?

This prayer implies the women's role at the time

They had to be married rather than happy

Taking care of the house and children

She needed to stay conformed, basically

And the girls who turned 25 without being married were offered "beautiful" coloured hats

This was done as a harmless joke

Even so, it is discrimination

Why discrimination? This tradition is quite funny and not really mean

Indeed. But it is meant to remind the girls that begin to be a bit "old" and not married yet

That they will have to get back in line, and fast enough

This is a way of regulating the social standards

For the population

And it's been seen in other traditions

In 2017, this old tradition tends to be forgotten

In France, wer'e not anymore forced to marry and to stay at home taking care of the children

Which is a good thing, imo

So no one offers any hat to their daughters or granddaughters when they turn 25

To remind them they shall marry

In fact, most of the girls of 2017 don't even know this tradition

Maybe my family is trying to send me a message?

I'm old, that's it?

YEAH IMMA CATHERINETTE, SO WHAT?

More seriously, this tradition has become a joke in my family

And my grandmother had much fun sewing this hat

TOO & ENOUGH | English Grammar Lesson - Duration: 8:29.

Hello, I'm Emma from English!

In this lesson, you'll learn how to use these

little, useful words correctly in English sentences.

Both of these words indicate a degree.

They give us more information about

an adjective or an adverb or a noun.

So, here 'too' means that it is more than what is wanted or what is needed.

So, it's usually a negative thing!

You are more hungry than you want to be!

This is really frustrating for you because you can't concentrate!

So here, 'enough' tells us that it is the amount that we want or we need.

It's the right amount and this is a positive thing!

You have what is needed, you are good enough.

Ouch! That is really mean!

Not good enough means that it is less than the amount that you want or you need.

It's a really negative thing. It's a pretty mean thing to say.

So, let's look at the structures for each of these words

with adjectives and adverbs first.

So, 'too' comes before an adjective or an adverb.

Remember that using 'too' with an adjective or an adverb

usually suggests that it's a negative thing.

It's more than what is wanted or needed.

So, it's not correct to say that the movie was 'too good'

when you really enjoyed it!

It's also not correct to say that your friend is 'too funny'.

It sounds really strange to native English speakers

because it suggests that it's more than what you want

or what you need it to be.

Use 'really' or 'very' or 'so' instead.

That sounds better!

There are some exceptions to this though, when you're speaking colloquially

- especially in Australia, where I'm from!

Like... For example, if someone asked me, "how are you?"

I probably say, "not too bad."

This is really common in Australia and it means 'good'!

but that's an exception.

Okay, what about 'enough'?

'Enough' comes after the adjective or the adverb.

Now, what about when 'enough' is used in a negative sentence?

'Enough' comes after the adjective or the adverb

but not comes before.

And this has the same meaning as 'I'm too weak'.

... Which means 'it's too cold'!

You can also use 'too' and 'enough' with nouns.

So again, this means that we have more of the noun

than we want or we need.

You would choose 'many' if the noun was countable.

and you would choose 'much' if the noun was uncountable.

Now, if you are not sure about

which nouns are countable and which are uncountable,

you should check out this lesson right here

because I'll explain it for you there!

So, what about 'enough'?

Well, with a noun 'enough' comes before the noun.

Again, this means that we have the right amount,

the amount that we want and that we need.

And to make these sentences negative we add 'not'.

usually before the main verb I haven't got enough time she didn't earn enough

The 'be' verb is a bit of an exception here, to the rule.

The structure is a little different when the be verb is the main verb

then 'not' comes after the main verb.

So, these handy little words will definitely help you to

express yourself more clearly in English

and now you know exactly how to use them correctly.

Make sure you practice them. Write some examples if you want,

add them in the comments below!

Remember that 'too' means that it's more than the necessary amount.

'Enough' is the necessary amount, it's the exact amount.

and 'not enough' is less than the necessary amount.
