In the last two videos we've looked at phenomena that cause high pressure spikes in pipes.

But a lot of people rightly pointed out that very low pressure in pipes can be equally as dangerous.

Hey I'm Grady and this is practical engineering.

On today's episode, we're revisiting the water hammer video to take a look at negative pressures.

If you watched the water hammer video I made a few months back, you'll know that slamming

a valve shut on a flowing pipe can cause a huge spike in pressure.

That's because the fluid inside a pipe has a lot of momentum, and fluids aren't compressible

enough to absorb sudden changes in velocity.

Spikes in pressure aren't always bad, but they can be dangerous if a pipe bursts or

just expensive by requiring stronger pipes with higher pressure ratings.

But in that video, I didn't talk about what happens on the other side of the valve.

So, I'm revisiting that demonstration with a few modifications so we can get the full

picture.

Here's the setup: valve, clear pipe, pressure gage, more clear pipe, 50 foot garden hose,

tree.

The tree's not important but I don't want anyone to think I'm wasting this water.

You won't be surprised to learn that flowing fluid in a pipe downstream of a valve also

has momentum, and that fluid also has a hard time stopping without a big fluctuation in

pressure.

But, unlike upstream where the momentum is carrying the fluid toward the valve, on the

downstream side, the fluid is trying to flow away from it.

So, the spike in pressure is negative - in other words, it creates a vacuum.

You may have noticed something different about this pressure gage.

It only measures pressures that are below atmospheric - it's a vacuum gauge.

Watch what happens when I slam this valve shut.

We get a very strong vacuum in the pipe downstream of the valve.

The momentum of the fluid in the water hose is pulling away from the valve.

That fluid tension sharply lowers the pressure in the pipe.

This trapped bubble gives a pretty good indication of what's happening as well.

This is pretty far from a laboratory setting (no offense to the backyard scientist), but

I'm seeing a peak of more than 30 inches of mercury, or 100 kilopascals below atmospheric

pressure.

That's a lot of vacuum.

In fact, it's enough to pull dissolved gas out of the water.

Take a look at the spot just downstream of the valve when I slam it shut.

A spontaneous cloud of fine bubbles forms as the vacuum pulls.

This is dissolved gases coming out of solution with the water.

When the pressure returns, the bubbles shrink, but they don't immediately go back into

solution with the water, so you can still see a light haze in the water, especially

when I turn the valve back on.

Very cool in this demonstration, but bad news if your pipe wasn't designed to withstand

these types of pressures.

Just like positive pressure spikes from water hammer, this phenomenon has caused numerous

failures of pipe systems from implosions due to vacuum.

So, how can this be avoided?

If the risk of failure is significant, like for very large pipelines or costly equipment,

engineers will specify vacuum relief valves that will allow air into the pipe if the pressure

gets too low, reducing the vacuum to protect the equipment.

But, the simplest solution is the same as discussed in the other water hammer video:

avoid sudden changes in velocity.

Ask any firefighter and they'll tell you: you gotta close valves slowly.

You still get a vacuum downstream, but much less of one.

Sanitary Napkins Are they Really Sanitary? Cherish Napkins are Truly Sanitary - Duration: 4:42.

hey everybody Cindy Bloom let's talk sanitary napkins. Yes they call them

sanitary napkins. Right now I have a lot of sanitary napkins in front of me. All

different kinds that you'd buy in this on the shelves. From all natural

sanitary napkins, to new foam ones to 10-hour ones an organic one. I want

to ask you do you really think they should be classified as sanitary napkins

here we go exhibit a Exhibit one sanitary napkin

see them all the time on the shelves look very closely do you see here these

are open there's air I can stick my finger all the way in the pad and touch

it but yet the seal is still there. What happens is we carry this in our purse,

we put them in our diaper bags, there's crumbs there's food there's makeup

there's all sorts of stuff in here I would beg I would honestly do not

believe that any doctor would booth if this is sanitary and allowed this in

their operating room. It's not sanitary it's open! Here's

another one this is like a newer technology it's flatter it's smaller

it's still ten-hour protection but look do you see do you see these flaps?

They're sealed but they are open again. Sanitary napkin is it sanitary? I don't

think so Here is an organic brand in a thing it

looks nice and soft but the whole thing the whole thing here is open like

literally it's so open that I can literally go in and touch the sanitary

napkin get my germs on it and then pass it off. Do you think that's

sanitary?

No, not sanitary! One more example is another organic one they say that it's not made

with toxins which is fantastic! I love that it's not made of toxins however is it

sanitary? Is this sanitary this is all that's covering it's just in a plastic

thing little plastic little envelope container all unsealed all open all

exposed to crumbs and germs and stuff that we carry around in the same places

that we carry what's supposedly a sanitary napkin.

Ladies these are not sanitary they're napkins and unfortunately not

only of a napkins but the reason why that they aren't sealed is because the

chemicals that they use or adhesion are toxic and they are like an industrial

grade the same type of industrial strength that is used in duct tape

therefore they can't seal the bag it won't allow it to seal otherwise it

would completely poof out! So what do you do? I got the answer, I got the solution

picking up maybe it's not so much the weather as the frequencies or the stormy

magnetic waves sir tourmalinated quartz I hope I'm saying that right so that's

what's coming out that's so interesting but it also talks about I feel it's also

I'm reading it in a different way too I'm reading it also as I feel like

somebody is possibly draining or kind of sucking the energy out of you

and it may be it may be this hanging on to your past or an axe

it could also be a way of doing things or again I kept getting this forgiveness

feeling there maybe somebody still that you need to forgive because it says

goodbye to the old or to the past so I feel like it's speaking more than so I

feel like on a tech not technological you can't even talk technological level

that it definitely could be this I also feel like somebody is possibly

exhausting you and draining you of your energy and to ground and protect so I'm

hearing it in different ways just so you know but you'll know how it

shouldn't have done that I shouldn't I was you know I was just acting childish

that's kind of another way that I'm reading this so you'll know how this

relates to you if it relates to you so where there's been possibly some

disagreements earlier in the day or not working well together

things possibly will decisions are made or you're back on track you're working

together you're communicating you're seeing eye-to-eye you might let this

other person back in and that's who this person is for some of you I feel like

this third person is gone they may be trying to come back on again on

Wednesday whether it's this business partner or your ex and then you have to

decide what you're gonna do similar energy to the just yet to yesterday's

reading but it's coming up as in love more today

whereas yesterday was possibly a business partner or but it could have

been in love also so you all know how this reading resonates with you if it

does it all but a decision or an agreement is possible by the end of the

hi, so do what you enjoy are you doing that because I know that you've heard it

before maybe you said it to somebody else you know you just got to do what

you enjoy but if it's not just fun related if it's not just about fun

activities then how much do you really enjoy the things that you do now the way

I see it it's like this you want to enjoy the goal that you want to achieve

that's what you want to enjoy that's that's what you do enjoy otherwise why

when you want to achieve it anyway so for me I enjoy my goals and I focus on

my goals I'm committed to achieve those goals

you know if I'm really passionate about it and then it's before you achieve it

you on this journey of achieving it of achieving those goals and during that

journey things can happen there are not as fun or not as enjoyable as the goal

itself or or rather just just the steps that you have to take or not all as

pleasant but that's just part of it you you're not affected by that too much or

in a negative way so do what you enjoy is just being focused that's what it's

about for me it's about being focused so that so that you can achieve the things

easier and faster because you enjoy the process you enjoy getting towards that

goal so and you may think well I already know that so this is nothing new but

there is so often where I hear people complain about things I mean they say

one thing but then other things come out of their mouth just a moment later you know

they don't really understand that so I really want you to think about that

state that statement you know like do what you enjoy and if you really agree

with it and how do you agree with it and and what can you catch yourself

things or complain about things that you are to be that you are to enjoy in life

you know if it's a goal then see how much you can not complain about the the

process of attaining that goal because there are only stopping you okay you

want to have the least amount of resistance there for you to enjoy what

you want to do so and and and there's one tip that I would like to give you if

it's not something that you have to do yourself maybe you can give it to

somebody else

Prosecutors request 8-year jail term for former presidential aide Woo Byung-woo - Duration: 0:51.

Prosecutors are demanding an eight-year prison term for a former presidential aide-- mired

in the tangled corruption scandal that brought down the previous Park Geun-hye administration.

Prosecutors on Monday recommended Woo Byung-woo, Park's senior presidential secretary for civil

affairs between 2015 and 2016,... should face that amount of time behind bars if he's found

guilty of his charges of dereliction of duty, abuse of power and perjury.

Woo is accused of neglecting his duty to carry out necessary inspections on the suspected

irregular government approval on the setup of two foundations allegedly spearheaded by

the former president's close confidante Choi Soon-sil, who also is currently standing trial

for corruption.

The Seoul Central District Court is due to hand down its verdict on Woo in mid-February.

Living Root Bridge is in Riwai Village of Meghalaya.

It is 70 km away from Shillong.

Entry fee is INR 10

The pathway to the bridge have many food and drinks stall.

No camera charges.

From Riwai Village you have to walk down about 500 meters.

Steps are built to walk so it's easy to complete the trek.

Children and older people might find it difficult to climb the stairs while return.

The bridge has been made to cross the river.

It has been made out of Ficus Elastica Tree ( Specie of Rubber Tree).

You are not allowed to stand on bridge for longer time.

You can stand on bridge and take photos and can cross the bridge.

There is a stream flowing below and you can stay there for as long as you wish.

Time required to see this place is 1.30 hours starting from Riwai Village.

Must see place in Meghalaya.

The must-read moments in Rose McGowan's new book, 'Brave'

Even without naming names, Rose McGowan still manages to set Hollywood on fire in her new book, Brave (HarperOne, on sale Tuesday).

The most outspoken of Harvey Weinsteins accusers, who has morphed into a no-holds-barred advocate for women, warns her audience: "This is not a tell all.

This is a tell it like it is.".

McGowans formative years are eye-opening, and frankly, awful.

The actress was born into a cult known as Children of God and raised in Italy, where the basics — food and shelter among them — were barely covered.

Once her family relocated to the U.S., McGowan writes that her father became increasingly verbally abusive and her mother was often absent.

McGowan emancipated herself from her parents at 15.

In Brave, McGowan, 44, does a lot of scalding truth-telling, driving home that readers need to wake up to the misogynistic realities of showbiz.

Here are four must-read moments:.

1. The Weinstein incident

McGowan first met Weinstein, whom she never names and refers to as the Monster in her book, at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her 1997 film, Going All the Way.

The movie mogul sat behind her, she writes, and she witnessed her manager (a woman) nodding at Weinstein after her topless scene.

The next day McGowan was sent to his hotel room.

After sitting on the couch while he barked on the phone, McGowan says the two talked about films and her acting goals.

But as he walked her out, McGowan writes that he pushed her into his bathroom, which had a hot Jacuzzi waiting.

"My clothes are getting peeled off me," she writes.

"I back into the wall, but there's nowhere to go." As she cried, Weinstein performed oral sex on her while masturbating, she says.

Rape to me is any violation of my body, she writes.

If you enter my body via tongue, fingers, penis, object without my consent, that to me is rape and I need no law telling me what I know to be true..

After the alleged assault, McGowan was driven to a photo op with her Phantoms co-star, and shaking, she told the actor on the cast where she'd been.

The unnamed actor replied: "(Expletive) it.

I told him to stop doing that." Though the co-star's name is not disclosed in the book, McGowan previously revealed this to be Ben Affleck on Twitter.

To date, 84 women have come forward with allegations against Weinstein.

He has repeatedly denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.

The New York Times reported last fall that Weinstein reached a settlement for $100,000 with McGowan, then 23, after the Sundance Film Festival incident.

Weinstein said the settlement was not to be construed as an admission but a way to avoid court.

After the Times and New Yorker stories on Weinstein last fall, McGowan claimed HW raped me in a series of tweets to Amazon head Jeff Bezos.

2. How women are treated in Hollywood

The lack of respect for women permeates all aspect of show business, as McGowan describes it.

During her five years on Charmed, "only one female director was hired in the entire five years I was there, and the crew sank her," she says.

"The crew would snicker in disrespect when she would direct them.".

McGowan says her first assault in Hollywood happened when she was a 14-year-old film extra, a job taken after her father demanded she pay $300 a month in rent.

A man on set in his late 40s jammed his tongue down my throat and fondled her breasts.

When she got her first starring role in 1995s Doom Generation, McGowan said she got her first lesson in the preference dealt to male stars.

"It was the first time I'd heard about method acting, where the actor stays in character all the time, even when the camera isn't rolling.

I have never met a female method actor.

To me, I'm a method actor' is usually synonymous with 'I'm going to be a (expletive) to everybody on set. It's something so many young male Marlon Brando wannabe actors do.

And I've never been on a set where that bad behavior wasn't indulged.".

3. The naked dress

McGowan describes her relationship with Marilyn Manson as a brief time of idyllic peace in her life and calls the eclectic musician deeply misunderstood.

"The truth was that at the same time when he wasn't creating electrifying music, Manson was painting watercolors of my Boston terriers while I was ordering glassware from Martha Stewart's online store..

McGowan writes that by the time she attended the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards with her rocker beau, she decided to reclaim her body in the wake of the alleged Weinstein assault.

"I thought, You know what? You want to objectify me? You want to see a body? This is what you want? All you media men, all you photographers, you vultures, this is what you want to see? I'll show you a body. And so I did.It was, of course, misinterpreted and sexualized, which was the exact opposite point I was trying to make.".

4. Meeting director Robert Rodriguez

McGowan calls the night she met Rodriguez (she refers to him as RR but provides many identifiable details) in Cannes one of the moments she regrets most in her life.

He told her he was married, unhappily.

"I believed him," she says.

They fell for each other quickly, and he promised to be her savior in Hollywood.

But the director grew to be jealous, manipulative and controlling, she writes.

On the set of Planet Terror, Rodriguez threatened to give McGowan's role away to Jessica Alba when McGowan lost too much weight from stress.

Rodriguez also accused McGowan of being in love with Quentin Tarantino and ultimately sold their film Weinstein.

I can't tell you what it was like to be sold into the hands of the man who had assaulted me and scarred me for life," she writes.

North Korea suddenly calls off joint Olympic event at Mount Kumgang - Duration: 2:37.

There was hope the run-up to North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics

would be smooth sailing, but another hiccup came late Monday night.

Out of the blue,... the North called off a joint cultural event scheduled to be held

at Mount Kumgang to celebrate the first Olympics on Korean soil in 30 years.

For more on the sudden change of heart, Lee Seung-jae reports.

From the joint Korean women's ice hockey team,... to the agreement to walk together during the

opening and closing ceremonies of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Everything looked to be in order, with the biggest international winter sporting event

just ten days away.

However, in a telegram notification sent to South Korea at just past ten p.m. on Monday,

the North said it had canceled the planned joint cultural event set to take place at

Mount Kumgang on February 4th.

According to South Korea's Unification Ministry,... the North cited what it claimed to be 'biased'

media reports about the upcoming event,... adding it had no choice but to cancel because

South Korean media continued to insult what North Korea called 'sincere' measures regarding

the Winter Olympics.

The ministry said the North took issue with media reports about its "internal event,"

referring to reports about the regime's military parade marking the 70th anniversary of its

military on February 8th, the day before the Winter Games kick off.

Reports in South Korea have been saying that, instead of an earlier projection of 13-thousand

military personnel and civilians taking part,... there will now be around 50-thousand.

The ministry expressed its disappointment, noting that the North's decision may undermine

what it had earlier called a "hard-earned" chance to improve inter-Korean ties.

In a statement released shortly after the North's decision,... the ministry added that

the "unilateral" decision by North Korea was regrettable,... and what has been agreed should

be implemented under the spirit of mutual respect and understanding.

The event at Mount Kumgang was initially planned to be a part of a series of events ahead of

the Olympics,... coming after three rounds of talks between the two Koreas.

It's uncertain whether this bump in the road will affect other scheduled events between

the two Koreas,... in particular the scheduled art performance by a North Korean art troupe,...

set to take place in Gangneung and Seoul.
