Waching daily Feb 15 2018

Fifty years ago doesn't seem like a very long time in the vast scheme of things, but things

have drastically changed since then.

The differences between the late 1960s and today go beyond the obvious.

Beauty standards in particular were shockingly different, reflecting the turbulence of the

era.

Here are some of the most surprising things that men found attractive 50 years ago.

Light skin

It's no secret that racism was rampant in the 1960s, although the Civil Rights Movement

helped to create significant change by the end of the decade.

But in spite of this progress, racial prejudice was never completely eradicated.

Take the Miss America Pageant for instance, whose rulebook explicitly stated that

"Contestants must be of good health and of the white race."

In 1968, a Miss Black America Pageant was held on the same day as the Miss America Pageant

in response to the organization's discrimination.

The Miss America Pageant finally admitted its first African-American contestant in 1970,

after Cheryl Browne was crowned Miss Iowa that year.

Even within the African-American community, a preference for lighter skin was apparent,

although this slowly began to change in the 1960s, with people embracing their natural

skin colors.

Thin, flat bodies

For a time, it looked like fuller figures would be at least an accepted standard of

beauty.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, voluptuous women like Marilyn Monroe were cultural icons.

But there was also a significant move toward slimness in the 1960s.

As Sarah Grogan wrote in Body Image: Understanding Body Dissatisfaction in Men, Women and Children,

this shift had a lot to do with the popularity of Twiggy, a rail-thin British fashion model.

As the decade wore on, curves became less desirable.

Society became obsessed with weight and exercise.

Fear of cellulite led women to go to extremes in order to slim down.

One woman who was written about in Vogue magazine in the late 1960s allegedly took 5 inches

off her waist with

"...exercise, 'standing correctly,' and using 'a special rolling pin.'"

Such regimens were typical of the late 1960s.

Were these methods effective?

Probably not all of them.

Exposed legs

In Fashion: A History from the 18th to the 20th Century, Akiko Fukai writes about how

the younger generation discovered that

"...displaying their physique was the most effective means of setting themselves apart

from the older generation."

Thus, the miniskirt came into vogue.

As hemlines rose, more attention was paid to the length and shape of a woman's legs.

The emphasis 1960s fashion placed on women's legs also had an influence on shoe styles.

Tall, pointed boots came into fashion to offset how much skin was being revealed by those

tiny skirts.

The Lolita look

The suppression of women's curves led to the popularity of a more prepubescent style.

Lithe, young-looking Lolita types like Twiggy dominated the fashion world.

Imagine Nation: The American Counterculture of the 1960's and 70's, edited by Peter Braunstein

and Michael William Doyle, explained

"...[this] look of exaggerated youthfulness expressed the associated sensibility that

maturity, in dress or behavior, was a dirty word, a sign of premature death, and therefore

something to be warded off as long as possible."

The Lolita look embodied the spirit of the era, representing youth and vigor, as well

as drawing attention the social conflict between the old and the new.

Androgyny

Coinciding with the preference for more boyish figures was the rise of unisex clothing and

androgynous styles.

Women noticeably began dressing in more masculine fashions in the 1920s.

As Rebecca Arnold wrote in Fashion, Desire and Anxiety, this style coincided with the

quest for greater independence for women, and was in direct opposition of the claustrophobic

femininity enforced by society.

Perhaps even more interesting is that this inclination towards androgyny was also adopted

by men.

PBS noted that this unisex style caused a good deal of confusion.

Everett Mattlin, a writer for the Chicago Tribune, explained in 1968 that gender roles

and the standard male-female relationship had been turned completely upside-down.

Traditional gender roles were beginning to evolve as we entered the '70s, which Mattlin

believed was a good thing.

Long, straight hair

The 60s were noted for their departure from formality and tradition.

In Fresh Lipstick: Redressing Fashion and Feminism, Linda M. Scott wrote about how the

later half of the decade was marked by a rise in long, straight hair.

Many men were also wearing their hair long at this time.

The changing hairstyles weren't just about following fashion, though.

For many, the long hair was a way to rebel against the complex female updos and the short

male haircuts of the previous generation.

Subservience

The 1960s might have been a time of change, but ads from the era show that women were

still expected to be homemakers and sex objects.

In spite of the great strides made towards gender equality, women still did not have

the same rights as men.

"Your coffee, sir."

"Thanks, beautiful!"

"You're welcome!"

It was still legal for a bank to deny an unmarried woman a credit card, and even married women

were often required to have their husbands as cosigners.

In some states, women were still banned from serving on juries throughout most of the '60s,

and most Ivy League schools didn't start accepting women until 1969, with some holding out well

into the 1970s.

In The Feminine Mystique, published in 1963, Betty Friedan summed up the frustration of

the generation.

"A woman today has been made to feel freakish and alone and guilty if, simply, she wants

to be more than her husband's wife."

New and Improved Po' Boys and Mac N' Cheese || Eat Seeker - Duration: 6:10.

- There's a lot of people that come in

that are like, "Oh man, I've been looking for a good gumbo,"

or, "I'm looking for a place

that sells beignets all the time."

I love when those people come in,

'cause I feel like it's a little bit of a challenge.

If my gumbo doesn't taste as good as Grandma's,

that one's gonna be a hard thing to match.

And nobody's gonna beat Grandma, c'mon now. (laughs)

(traffic and honking)

I grew up in New Orleans, born and raised.

Always grew up cooking.

I remember the first thing I made was scrambled eggs,

and I was so proud of myself

and wanted to make it every weekend.

Eventually I got a job working at this place called

Crescent City Beignets when we lived in Houston.

I'm pretty sure I only got the job because I was

actually from New Orleans and knew what everything

was supposed to taste like. (laughs)

New Orleans food pulls from a lot of different cultures.

There's a lot of African influence,

French, Spanish, so it's kind of like a melting pot

of flavors and combinations that appeals to a lot of people.

My main goal was to pull some things that people know

but never got a chance to try.

I don't know anywhere else in New York

where you can get Louisiana-style barbecue shrimp.

I wanted to have a way to introduce people to these things

that I grew up on and that I've loved my entire life

that no one can really find here.

I still get a lotta people that come in

and they're like, "What is a poboy?" (laughs)

Poboys are definitely a New Orleans and Louisiana staple.

It starts with the poboy bread.

We ship up Leidenheimer bread.

It's a really popular bakery down in New Orleans

that's one of the go-tos for good

New Orleans-style French bread for poboys.

I mean, it's one of those things

that really sets it apart from other sandwiches.

It's just so airy on the inside, crispy on the outside.

It almost disappears as you bite into it.

And I wanted to take some of the same flavor profiles

but think outside of the box and still be something

that's easily accessible to the people that

have never experienced a poboy at all.

The Versai is my homage to the

Vietnamese American community in New Orleans.

The Vietnamese influence and culture in New Orleans is,

like, almost as prevalent as Italian is in New York.

A lot of the great French bread

comes from Vietnamese bakeries.

My way of paying homage was by making

a bahn mi-style sandwich with a little fried catfish.

I wanted to add that sweet, sour, spicy sauce

with the satsuma pepper sauce, the cilantro,

the pickled cabbage, the carrot.

Throwing in some of those classic bahn mi-type flavors,

but doing it with my little Creole twist to it.

The Grandaddy is named after my grandad,

who passed away a few years ago.

And the first time I ever had barbecue shrimp

was at his house, and I fell in love with it immediately.

As soon as I had it, I wanted to know how to make it,

and I wanted my mom to make it,

I wanted to learn how to make it myself.

To have that flavorful, spicy shrimp added with

the sweet-sour of the onion jam, the pickled cabbage on top,

that rounds out that flavor, where it's just so many layers

of flavor in one bite on one sandwich.

Cajun cooking is a little more country.

Pulling from the land, coming from whatever's around you,

wherever you live, whereas Creole

is a lot more city cooking.

I try to focus a little bit more on the Creole

because I am Creole, but there's a lot of

mismatching and cross-culturing.

I feel like gumbo is something that kinda crisscrosses.

Gumbo is kind of like a stew.

It's gotta sit there for a while,

it's usually served over rice, it's super rich in flavor,

there's a lot of layers, lot of meatiness to it.

My gumbo is a Creole gumbo.

I put in onions, celery, bell pepper.

I also put in shrimp, Andouille sausage.

Beignets I describe as little deep-fried clouds

of deliciousness covered with powdered sugar. (laughs)

For me, a good beignet has a little tooth on the outside,

nice and fluffy, airy on the inside,

and then with the powdered sugar on top

or the caramel sauce that we sell on the side,

it just takes it to a whole other level.

Even when I make 'em now, I, like,

I remember, like, going on school trips

to Cafe Du Monde in elementary school

and getting powdered sugar all over me.

So when people come here and eat it

and they're like, "Oh, I'm so sorry,

I got powdered sugar everywhere,"

I'm like, "It's fine." (laughs)

I'm a professional and it still happens.

If there's no powdered sugar on the table,

you didn't do it right.

Louisiana-style cooking, it's one of those things that,

like, especially if you grew up on it

or you really appreciate the culture,

if you're gonna do it, you gotta do it right.

That's my biggest goal, is to do it right.

That's why I get so many things shipped up from there.

Like, it's gotta be authentic,

it's gotta be real, 'cause if you're gonna half it,

like, you might as well not even do it. (laughs)

That's why I tell people, when I was coming up with my

beignet recipe, and they're like,

"Oh, is it as good as Cafe Du Monde?"

I'm like, I wouldn't have even opened

if it wasn't as good, if not better.

Yeddy the Himalayan Brown Bear | Buzzly's Buddies | Everest VBS - Duration: 2:01.

Thanks for watching Lifetree Kids!

Awwhh.

It's our last day at VBS.

If that makes you so sad you can't bear it, well then hold on.

I'm Yeddy, your best bear buddy.

I may look like bears from North America, but I'm a little smaller and you only find

me up on the high mountains near the Himalayas.

In fact, I'm a Himalayan brown bear!

Like most bears, we spend a lot of time looking for food and sleeping in the sun.

But we also spend a lot of our time hibernating.

We curl up in our comfy caves for several months.

It makes me sleepy just thinking about it.

I love my warm, cozy cave home.

You know, Jesus made a promise in the Bible about a special home for you.

Jesus said he'd go and make a home for you, one that would last forever.

When Jesus died on the cross and came back to life, he showed that God has the power

to love us forever.

And because God is stronger than death, you can live with God in heaven.

The Bible book of John chapter 3, verse 15 says this about Jesus, "Everyone who believes

in him will have eternal life."

You have the hope of an incredible heavenly home, one that never ends because God has

the power to love us forever.

Kerem, son, take Süreyya and your sister with you,

then get yourselves home,

have a good rest. I'm here anyway. I'll let you know if something happens.

No, dear Yildiz. We're here until the results come out.

Dear, I'm saying that I'll stay with my lady.

You're already ruined around here.

Go and have yourselves some good rest.

Dear Hümeyra,

now you're with your baby.

You shouldn't get yourself tired this much.

I'm not getting tired. I won't leave my mom alone.

Hümeyra, my daughter, Don't be so stubborn. Go home and rest.

I'm fine.

Besides, I'm not alone. Yildiz is here, too.

I'll let you know if anything happens. Come on.

There's not much time left before you get discharged from the hospital.

I'll wait for you here. My sis and Süreyya should leave.

It doesn't matter for me.

Sis Hümeyra shouldn't wait here. She is the one who needs rest.

Sis Yildiz, take sis Hümeyra and go home if you want.

We're here already. We'll wait right next to aunt Macide. Right?

Exactly. That works, too.

Look what we're saying, then look at yours!

That's no better than ours.

They were exactly like this when they were kids.

Elif, my dear?

You were here, huh?

Come over here, don't stand at the door.

Come on, don't wait there.

Come here, sweetheart.

How are you feeling, Mrs. Macide?

I got better when I saw you.

I hope that you got well.

I've always prayed for you.

For you to get better right, right away!

I was so scared that something bad will happen to you!

Oh, my beautiful daughter!

I can look for the doctor if you have any pain.

She'll give you some painkillers.

Would you want?

Oh my thoughtful daughter, thank you very much.

But when there's such a pretty girl right next to me,

like you, I don't feel any pain at all. But thanks anyway.

Kerem, you can leave now. Get some rest.

Look I'm right here.

Also, mother Macide needs to sleep.

You know what doctors told.

She shouldn't get herself tired.

Tarık is right, Kerem.

Besides, it's too crowded in here.

Then, all the pregnant women, go first, please.

It's clear that you're taking place of two.

Your sister is coming with you already.

You're so tired, honey, huh?

I don't want to leave.

But you, too, need to get some rest.

But I won't be better if I get home. My mind will be stuck in here.

I don't want to leave mom alone.

Alright.

If you say so.

Kerem, son,

come on, take Süreyya with you, and go home. Get some rest.

- Mom, for God's sake- - No arguments.

Come on, go and have some rest.

I'm just getting sad, seeing all of you so tired.

We'll let you know if anything happens.

Fine then. But I'll be back in the evening.

Sis, are you sure that you don't want to come with us?

Yes, I'm sure. You can leave.

Elif, dear, you're coming with us, right?

Take good care of yourself, aunt Macide.

Thank you.

Then, see you in the evening again.

Take care, OK?

Don't worry son. Good bye.

Call me if anything happens.

Let's go, if you're ready.

- See you soon, aunt Macide. - See you, dear.

Mr. Kerem!

Where are you headed to?

We'll go to home, rest for couple of hours.

Elif will come with us, right, dear?

It's better for her to stay with me, Mr. Kerem.

I won't be calm if she's away from me. I'd be wrapped up.

We'll be with her, what could happen?

It doesn't mean that I don't trust you,

At the end, Elif is escrowed to me.

I don't want to leave my mind with her.

Fine then. So be it that way.

See you, honey.

See you, dear Elif.

"Get to the point" and other common expressions in English - Duration: 4:30.

Hi everyone. It's Jennifer here with some useful expressions for everyday English.

Have you ever heard someone talk and talk, and you wished they would just get the point?

I'm guilty of not coming to the point right away when I talk and when I write.

I like to provide background information, so I don't always state the main things first.

To GET to the point or to COME to the point means you say or write your most important idea immediately.

We can use these variations for emphasis:

get right to the point, come straight to the point.

When we write email or text someone, we usually get right to the point and we don't waste words.

Can you think of another situation when it's important to come straight to the point?

A similar expression is to get to the heart of the matter.

However, telling someone, "Get to the point" OR "I wish you'd get to the point" …sounds impatient. So be careful not to be rude.

In contrast, if I suggest, "Let's get to the heart of the matter," I'm showing more sensitivity.

At least, that's how I hear it.

"To get to the heart of the matter" is to identify the central issue, the main problem.

If your friend is terribly upset and trying to explain why,

it may take some tears and a good amount of talking before you get to the heart of the matter.

In a work situation, you might choose a different expression: to get to the bottom of something. This is similar to our previous expression.

When you get to the bottom of a matter, you work to discover the reason or cause of a problem because you want to fix it.

If a problem appears at work, you can lead your colleagues into action and say:

Let's get to the bottom of this. Let's figure out what went wrong.

An equivalent expression is get to the root of the problem or to get to the root of a matter.

If production is going down or if sales are dropping, a company needs to get to the root of the problem and take corrective action.

It's time for you to put these expressions into use. Choose one and write an example in the comments.

I'll offer corrections as time allows. Please help one another by reading and commenting on other examples.

If you enjoy learning common expressions that you can use in everyday English, please let me know and like this video.

And by the way, do you know about sponsorhips?

Why is there no American Left Wing Party? - Duration: 11:26.

If there's one thing you hear over and over again in the American political discourse,

it's socialism as a word to represent generic badness.

And America indeed doesn't appear to have a left-wing party in their political system.

Many other countries have democratic socialist parties, but the US seems to act as a strange

exception to this.

So… why?

Hi, I'm Tristan Johnson, and this is Step Back History.

Be sure to click the subscribe button as well as the bell notification to never miss a new

Step Back video or live stream.

Unlike in Canada, a good chunk of Europe, and Oceania, a social democratic party never

entered the halls of Congress.

It almost rings as just political wisdom in American political speech.

Never mention socialism.

Everything private is better than public, corporations always good, unions always bad,

progressive taxation bad, trickle down good.

You saw accusations of encroaching socialism from the American right for over half a century

now.

Most recently it was the Limbaugh's and the Gingrich's arguing that the tiniest government

regulation from Obama meant the imminent rise of Soviet communism, even when all his best

friends were bankers.

Well, to channel Morpheus, what if I told you Socialism isn't some foreign ideology,

antithetical to American values?

What if I told you that it was the work of Socialists that you have all your fingers,

and you likely worked 8 hours today?

This is the story of a group of political activists who without getting to play in congress

or the white house, still made a lot of modern America.

What we could call socialist communities in America date all the way back to the early

19th century.

Groups like the Shakers, activists like Josiah Warren, and communities founded by people

like Charles Fournier experimented with socialist type policies and actions, just without the

name.

As industrialisation expanded in America, you saw a massive increase in the country's

wealth.

In the 19th century, the per capita wealth increased by about 1000 dollars, but it was

incredibly uneven.

In 1901, one percent of the population owned about 54 percent of the wealth.

This is around double of their share today.

This economic situation is often credited for the spread of socialist ideas in America.

Funny that.

So in the late 19th century, socialist movements started to bubble up in America.

One such example is the presidential run of Victoria Woodhull.

She was the publisher of the Communist Manifesto in America and ran for president under the

Equal Rights Party all in 1872.

The law at the time said that women couldn't vote, but nothing said they couldn't run

for office.

At one point she even tried to court Frederick Douglass as her running mate.

Her platform was to reform political and social abuses, emancipate labour, and give women

the vote.

She also wanted to abolish the death penalty and improve civil rights.

Socialist groups, trade unions, and suffragists supported her bid for the white house.

However because she was under the age of 35, she wasn't allowed on the Ballot.

Now President Woodhull is an alternate history scenario I want to read!

Socialism in the late 19th century usually wasn't in these electoral arenas.

Groups formed from trade unions and were popular amongst British, German, and Jewish immigrants.

There were a few attempts to build a party, including the 1874 workingmen's party and

the 1877 Socialist Labour Party, but the real big step for Socialism in America was the

founding of the...

Socialist Party of America in 1901.

Its primary goals were to collectivise those means of production.

The party was, however, very decentralised to allow for flexibility and to serve diverse

interests around the country.

It attracted a motley crew of both immigrant and native-born workers, tenant farmers, middle-class

intellectuals, a few champagne socialist rich people, urban reformers, and the nascent feminist

movement.

The party did pretty well for itself, claiming about 10,000 members on its founding, and

growing to 150,000 by 1912, the high watermark for the party electorally.

Socialist magazines like Appeal to Reason had circulations over 760,000.

This period also saw the rise in Anarchist activism.

A group of left-leaning folks who believe that there's no government like… no government.

Anarchists were active parts of this surge in left-wing politics going on, albeit with

a few objecting to their tactics.

Assassinating the president, not exactly the best PR.

In May of 1883, a labour demonstration exploded in violence.

Literally, there were bombs.

This event, which I am glossing over because it really should be its own video, is called

the Haymarket affair, or by people on the left, the Haymarket Massacre.

It spawned International Workers Day, which is a holiday around the world.

Except in America and Canada, where they instead have a labour day in September very few people

even know is about labour.

Several anarchists were found guilty of conspiracy after the event and executed for their involvement

with the bombing.

Anarchists in this period had a reputation for liking bombs.

So what were these labour activists goals?

The big move around the world among socialists was an 8 hour work day, but many had the long-term

goal of eradicating capitalism.

Where they fought was in how.

Some were revolutionaries who wanted to use bullets and bombs to overthrow the state,

and some argued for a reformist approach.

Things were looking good after 1912, but it wouldn't last.

The drums of war began to beat over in Europe in 1914.

The empires of the world clashed in one of the biggest, deadliest, and most pointless

wars in human history.

Most socialists opposed the struggle, claiming that it was a result of empires competing

over colonies.

They implored the US to stay neutral in such a conflict.

However, in 1917, the US declared war on the central powers.

This war led to a lot of changes in America.

It was the beginning of the income tax, but also when the US passed the espionage act.

This very constitutional law made it a crime to make speeches undermining the war effort.

It resulted in the imprisonment of a lot of anti-war protestors.

Among them was Socialist Party leader Eugene Debs.

Socialist magazines were forced shut, except for Appeal to Reason which decided to support

the war to keep its doors open.

After the war, the attorney general A. Mitchell Palmer became convinced that communists were

planning to take over America.

See, the Russian revolution in what would become the USSR really freaked him out.

He recruited a special assistant, J. Edgar Hoover, and used that espionage act as well

as a similar Sedition Act to attack pretty much every left of centre organisation.

On the second anniversary of the Russian Revolution, over 10,000 activists were arrested under

what is today called the Palmer Raids.

Those arrested who were immigrants found themselves facing deportation.

By the way, that revolution Palmer was convinced entirely was going to happen was bogus.

They found no evidence of such an activity.

However, that didn't stop many of these activists from being held without trial for a very long

time.

Most were released, but some famous activists like Emma Goldman were deported to Russia.

The Socialist party began to decline in the 20s.

However, that didn't stop Eugene Debs from raking in almost a million votes in the 1920

election while in prison.

In the 1930s, the Socialist party was supplanted by Communist Party USA, often called CPUSA.

People were afraid of the consequences of supporting these causes.

As a result of the government crackdowns, many socialist newspapers, even the ones that

survived the war, had to shut down.

As the Depression took hold, and the New Deal began to show a lot of success, many socialists

decided to vote Democratic.

Socialist party membership dropped over 80 percent between 1932 and 1936.

However, there were some holdouts.

One place the Socialists succeeded was in Milwaukee, where Daniel Hoan served as the

mayor from 1916, all the way to 1940.

The second punch came in the 1950s.

During the peak of the cold war with the USSR, a senator named Joseph Mccarthy, who looks

a lot like Ted Cruz, capitalised on paranoia about Soviet spies and began a witch hunt

for secret communists.

This led to a lot of destroyed lives of anyone who ever associated with these socialist groups,

even if that association was decades ago.

It also resulted in a lot of closeted LGBT people suffering threats of being outed.

It's called the lavender scare and a story for another video if you want it.

Due to this second red scare, membership in the socialist party fell to below 2,000 members

as people either retreated in fear or joined the Democrats in hopes that they could push

their ideas there.

Gosh, that's been going on for a long time…

In the 60s, some high profile American socialists actually were called in by the Kennedy and

Johnson administrations to help with the war on poverty and the great society.

Socialists also began to show up in the civil rights movement, and to a much lesser extent

amongst the 60s counterculture.

Speaking of the 60s, there was a rise in a liberal pro-capitalist, but still socially

progressive...ish group called the new left.

After the 60s, this began to be what would take over the Democratic party.

That being said, over the late 60s and early 70s the socialists tended to throw their support

behind the Democratic candidate.

In 1976, the Socialist party ran its first presidential candidate in two decades, and

the candidate was a former mayor of Milwaukee.

Since then, the Socialist party pretty much broke with the Democrats.

Well, through their policy positions, it's more the Democrats broke up with them.

So the socialists do seem at quite a low point, but things seem to be open to change.

The cold war is long dead, and in 2013 a poll of identified Democrats found a 49% support

for socialism, compared to a 39% support for capitalism.

The presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders and the organised young fight against

the Trump administration has resulted in an explosion of support for socialism in America.

Since the Sanders campaign, the Democratic Socialists of America have reported that their

membership has more than doubled.

It's still unclear how socialism will fit into the future of American politics, but

it seems that it will be part of it.

Drop your guns now!

Excuse me.

Go!

Move it! Move! Move!

Get down!

Line them up along the wall!

Keep them quiet!

Children, stay close to me.

Who are you?

The Lasso of Hestia compels you to reveal the truth.

Now, who are you?

We're a small group of reactionary terrorists.

We know that sin has brought on this plague of aliens.

Why the hostages?

You're too late.

The countdown's already begun.

In a few minutes, four city blocks...

While the world watches.

Hush!

Shut up!

This is man's best hope.

Down with the modern world.

Back to the Dark Ages, and the safety of holy fear.

Quiet!

This would've been over quickly, but...

No! Don't!

I don't believe it.

What are you?

A believer.

Let's Talk About Gun Control Loopholes - Duration: 1:42.

School Shooting.

Shooting at a school.

Another School Shooting.

Ever wonder why gun control isn't getting fixed?

You're about to find out.

A USA Today report has revealed that the FBI issued orders to seize more than 4,000 guns

last year from people who failed background checks.

Thousands of people were able to purchase guns despite having criminal records, mental

health issues, or other disqualifications.

So, how did this happen?

It's all thanks to a major loophole within one of our country's strongest gun control measures.

Anyone looking to buy a gun needs to pass a background check

But here's the catch: If dealers don't hear back from the FBI within THREE days of

requesting the check, under federal law, they're allowed to go ahead and sell the gun anyway.

If it turns out later that the person hasn't passed the background check, then the FBI

issues an order to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to

take back the guns.

That's right -- take BACK the guns they already gave to the potentially crazy criminals

with a history of violence.

Can you imagine getting your drivers license BEFORE you've actually passed the test?

Merge! Merge! Merge! Merge! Stop you're freaking me out!

Which can take awhile, since there's no electronic database of gun-owners, thanks

This 3-day loophole is also part of federal law.

It's the same loophole that allowed white supremacist Dylann Roof to buy a gun and murder

nine churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015.

The FBI later revealed that it had failed to detect Roof's arrest for drug possession

-- a charge that would have disqualified him from buying the gun in the first place.

Of course, not all gun owners are criminals.

But it's clear how easy it is for them to fall in the wrong hands.

Do you think the FBI and the ATF are doing a good job cleaning up these messes?

For UPROXX, I'm Steve Vasquez.

Dirty Bomb: New Merc: Hunter - Duration: 4:07.

This is shoe.

coming to you live from Alaska.

I've been sent on a very special mission to try and track down the Merc that they call Hunter

He must be on his way to London already.

Without further ado as I know you guys can't wait, here's Game Designer c4Te to take you

through our Alaskan assassin.

Hunter's a mid-to-long ranged Merc, armed with a crossbow and pistols

His crossbow can be equipped with either a Standard Bolt or an EMP Bolt

The Standard Bolt deals damage and spots enemy players for your team when hit

These Bolts can also be charged up by aiming down his scope, making them deal more damage

at the cost of a slower fire-rate The EMP Bolt deals less damage than the Standard

Bolt, but triggers an electromagnetic pulse on impact which disables all deployables within

a small area for a short duration Hunter's also carrying a brand new machine

pistol, compact pistol and melee weapon.

Hunter has a lot of flexibility in how he engages the enemy, and the ability to disrupt

from long ranges makes him a very interesting pick

And the best thing about Hunter?

When Hunter goes live not only will you be able to pick up the latest Merc in the store,
