DECEMBER BOOK HAUL!! | 2018 | Kendra Winchester - Duration: 13:39.

Hello! My name is Kendra Winchester. Welcome back to my channel! Dylan is

behind you. He's playing with toys and shredding a towel, you know, like like you

do. Anyway, so today we're gonna be doing a book haul, and like always, I separated

them into two groups. This first group is going to be the books that I have

bought or were given to me. The second group will be books that were sent to me

by publishers, so we can have the fulfill FTC warning in there, and all of everyone

is happy regarding books on social media etc. All right, so the first book I'm going

to talk to you about is SADIE by Courtney Summers. I finally picked up a

copy of this. Everyone and their mother's brother was telling me that this is a

great book, and I need to read it. So Samuel and I are planning on listening

to it on the way up to my parents' house. So yes we tend to pick books that are

kind of really in-depth that we want to read, but it doesn't really work for a

car ride. You need something fun and adventurous and that will keep your

attention. And I think this is . . . it also I've heard the audio book is amazing.

Because it has like a podcast stuff in it. I think so, yeah, so I picked a

copy of this up—finally. Everyone's been telling me to pick it up. So in

November, Autumn and I went to New York for some business stuff, and we of course

stopped in the Strand. And who else happened to be there? Matthew Sciarappa! And

I said, "Hey, Matthew what book would you recommend to me, and I will buy it."

And so he recommended Banana Yoshimoto. He said KITCHEN, but they didn't have

KITCHEN. So he got me N.P. I have no idea what this book is about, but Matthew

Sciarappa said that I would probably like it. and everyone's telling me that he is

indeed correct; this author is amazing. So I trust the internet and Matthew. So when

I read this, I will get back with you, and we can talk about this author.

I would probably read KITCHEN as well, because that's the one everyone's

telling me to read. So I doubt the next book is FUN HOME. I was looking for a

copy of FUN HOME, and I found one there at the Strand. I read this a few years

ago because we talked about it on the podcast as one of our discussion picks,

for that whatever month that happened to be (probably graphic novels). And this is

really a classic of graphic memoirs, so uh.

It was made into a musical, and I was able to see the musical, I think,I don't

know, last year? So I was really excited. We actually be able to see that. So yeah,

I finally have a copy of FUN HOME. And I know there is a second one. This one

focuses more on Alison Bechdel's relationship with her father, and then

the second one is like, "Are you my mother?" And it's about her relationship with her

mother. I need to pick that one up, but I need pick up a lot of books. I just . . . my

never-ending TBR. The next book is CHRISTMAS DAYS by Jeanette Winterson. I

read this last year with Samuel, so I wanted to finally buy a copy. So I did.

And this is a beautiful naked hardback, with gorgeous illustrations throughout.

And there's foil, and it's navy. which is my favorite color. So there you go.

Moving on at the last book I picked up for myself was POPPY WAR by R.F Kuang, and

I am very excited to read this. A friend of mine just finished this, or is gonna

be finishing this shortly, and she sent me a whole like list of trigger warnings.

Because that's the real reason I haven't picked this up yet is because I was

concerned about trigger warnings for sexual assault. And since it's war, like,

typically those are super graphic. So I mean like I went into THE SYMPATHIZER,

and had no idea it was coming. So at least now I have a trigger warning and

can skip it if I desire. So I appreciate her doing that for me,

so I'm very excited to get into this book. I've heard that this is the best

debut fantasy novel of the year from many people, many lists. So yes, very

excited to read it. The last book is the final book I

need for my Jhumpa Lahiri collection, and that is INTERPRETER OF MALADIES. And this

is her short story collection, and I gave this five stars. It's the very first Jhumpa

Lahiri that I ever read. I've given everything by her five stars, which is why

she's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Yes, I just I just love

her. So thank you Jaclyn for sending this my way, and yeah I would highly

recommend that you pick this up if you haven't already. Heaven knows that I need to

reread it. It's so good. Hello, sorry. Sorry, about the continuity has this video. We had an

emergency where Dylan decided to try to steal a wrapping paper roll from the corner

of the room, and like sent an entire stack of items

falling to the floor. So it's also getting quite warm up here, so I was like,

you know, what we already had to stop the video—wardrobe change!

So yes, anyway. Let's get back to the books. So this is MAPS, and this is by

married couple. And they illustrate different countries and regions, and you

can see what the country is famous for. So kids learn, you know, this is Russia.

And they have their flag there, and the different animals and plants and

different things I associate with that country. So this is such a cute book. I am

so glad I finally have a copy of this. I've had my eye on it since I saw it at

Costco a few years back. So yes. So excited for this book. I'm the nerd who

loves maps. I'm fine with that. I own it. So the next group is a group of books

that were sent to me by publishers for an honest review, and so thank you so

much publishers for sending them to me and making my job possible. So first up

we have some ARCs, so let's just jump into these. All of these are out next year. So

first up is THE SEVEN OR EIGHT DEATHS OF STELLA FORTUNA by Juliet Grames, and this

book is had so much buzz. It's out from Ecco. It's coming out in May. I've already seen

people over in the UK reading this and giving it rave reviews. So this is gonna be a

huge buzzy book in May. Mark it on your calendars, your TBRs, everywhere. I'm

really excited for it. It even comes with a family tree in the front there. I love

a good family tree. So I cannot wait for this book, and it's definitely one of my

most anticipated books of the first half of the year. Coming out in February is

the CARE AND FEEDING OF RAVENOUSLY HUNGRY GIRLS by Anissa Gray, and this is

a debut novel about three sisters and how they interact with each other. And I

think something happens in the beginning that, like, sets off the whole story, and they

have to come to terms with their roles in the family. And I think it really

looks at sisterly friendship as well, so definitely looking forward to this book.

And that cover is just endlessly fascinating. I mean, look at that! Do you see

all the faces? Wow! And this book is out from Berkeley. So the next one is Maria Popova's

FIGURING, which is out from Pantheon. And this comes out in February. I believe

this book is a nonfiction book, which just delves into a lot of existential

thoughts (I think). If you follow Brain Pickings, which is what she founded, you know she's

a very smart woman. So I feel like this book is just gonna be like taking the

top of Maria's skull off and like peering into her brain and like what

what really is going on. And she's just so smart. So I really love style manuals

being an editor and different things, and so I really enjoyed BETWEEN YOU AND ME, and

that was a memoir by the copy editor of the New Yorker. So she follows that

up with GREEK TO ME: ADVENTURES OF A COMMA QUEEN. That's by Mary Norris, and

it's out from Norton and in April, I believe. And so it just continues in

that vein. So if you like commas or you like the book BETWEEN YOU AND ME, or you

just like, you know, memoirs from people who love punctuation then, definitely

check this one out. So the next book here is out from Hub City Press. That's an

indie press here in South Carolina, actually. And that's THE MAGNETIC

GIRL by Jessica Handler. And this is set two decades after the Civil War ended

and in northern Georgia, I believe is where it's set. So that's a story, about the

magnetic girl there and what happens with that. So this particular indie press,

though, focuses on Southern fiction. So I am all here for this. Yes, that cover!

It's so fascinating, isn't it? Yeah. So next up, we have a middle reader, and

this one's already out. It's gonna be out in paperback soon, and that's ZORA AND ME:

THE CURSED GROUND. And this is a mystery about Carrie and her friend

Zora, from Zora Neale Hurston. And this is like a little fictional story

about Zora as a girl, so Carrie and her friends Zora discovered that the town

mute isn't actually mute. And it unravels a whole set of mysteries. I believe this

book won some sort of Coretta Scott King Award. But it's, yes, I just saw this book

and was like yes, definitely. I'm so excited for this. I love middle reader. I think

this book will be great, and I think a sequel is already on the schedule. So I

look forward to that as well. So next up is some books from FSG ,and that is

EVENING IN PARADISE:MORE STORIES from Lucia Berlin, and Lucia Berlin's

unfinished memoir and letters and papers and things. This, as you know, I

so excited about these because I loved A MANUAL FOR CLEANING WOMEN, which I just

finished, finally. Finally. Autumn was so right. So I'm very excited to read her

next ones, next stories, and her memoir. So I mean look at that then. That's just

gorgeous, and the memoir one actually has photos and different things in it. So

excited. So I knew I asked a lot of questions in my wrap up about MANUAL

FOR CLEANING WOMEN, so I'm looking forward to finally having those

questions answered in this one. This next one in INSURRECTO by Gina

Apostol out from Soho Press, and that's an indie press here in the US. And this

the author was featured on Publisher's Weekly's cover of their best of books

issue, so I'm so excited about this book. And I think I've talked about this book

several times, but this book is about a American filmmaker and she goes to the

Philippines. And she has the Filipina translator, and the two women, I think,

basically wander around the rural part of the Philippines and stuff happens,

which is always a great plot for a book, I think. Just two people get together

that normally wouldn't be together, and then stuff happens. Yes, but this is a

gorgeous book. It has the most beautiful end papers just ever, just so gorgeous.

And then the back I mean everything about this book is beautiful. I'm so

excited to read it, and I also found the audio in hoopla recently, so I am all set.

All set for this book. All right so next up, we have THE OYSTER THIEF by Sonia

Faruqi, and I think this is a love story involving a mermaid. I don't really need

to know anything else. I'm excited to go into this blind. I've heard great things about

it. I've seen it all over bookstagram and different things, but this is book . . .

It's our from Pegasus ,so yeah look at that.

I mean I just love that cover, and it has these beautiful mustard and papers. Just,

these people know how to make a book. They really do. Another book I'm really

excited about is ONCE UPON A RIVER by Diane Setterfield. Diane Setterfield does

these historical settings with some magical elements to them, and so this one

is no exception. A man walks in to, I think, an inn or something of some kind

and carrying what appears to be a dead girl. And then

she wakes up, and it's like, oh, what she really died or was it magic? What's going

on? So yes. I love Diane Setterfield. It's supposed to be like a real wintery book,

so I'm here for this. Oh, of course, love her.

This book was recommended by Rebecca Traister. She came on the podcast, and she

recommended this book among some others. So this is by Soraya Chemaly. This is RAGE

BECOMES HER: THE POWER OF WOMEN'S ANGER, and like ONCE UPON A RIVER, this is out

from Atria. And so this book just sounds amazing, and Rebecca tracer said that

this took a more psychological perspective on women's anger in society

today and how that intersects with politics, I believe. So yes, I so much am

looking forward to this, and it's just center of my wheelhouse. I don't really

know what else to say. Do I need to give any more descriptors before you go,

"Oh right, yeah that's a Kendra book. Definitely,

a Kendra book." The last book I have for you, I'm very excited about. And I've

actually already finished it, and that's FIRST COMES MARRIAGE out from Prometheus

books. And this is by Huda Al-Marashi. This book is about . . . this is book is

actually a memoir, and it's about Huda growing up in California as an Iraqi

American Muslim and how she had essentially an arranged marriage. It was

a little different than her parents arranged marriage because she actually

grew up with the guy that she married, and she, you know, liked him and respected

him. But it was a bit different, and the thing I really appreciate about this

book is that the perspectives in here are so interesting, and she asked a lot

of questions. And she critiques her own culture and her own like takeaways when she

was a young woman, because she got married when she was about 20. And she

gives you the realities but also critique things and really it just makes

you think about your own perception of what is a love story. Yeah, so those the

books that I picked up recently. If you think I should pick up a book sooner

rather than later definitely put it down in the comments. Of course, all of these

books and where their publishers will lead down in the description box below.

Thanks again to the publishers who sent me these books.

I really appreciate it. And yeah, I guess this is it for me, and I will see you in the next

one. Bye, guys!

Narrated For You in 5 minutes (Alec Benjamin Medley) - Duration: 4:35.

She told me that she loved me by the water fountain

She told me that she loved me and she didn't love him

Too young

I was too young

But I spent

22 days and 21 nights

Crossing every T, just making it right

Only to discover it's not worth

Doing Annabelle's homework

I was born in 1994

I was born in 1994

I've been falling much more deep than I wanna

I've been wishing I could breathe underwater

I hold my breath

I can't see what comes next

I don't know when

I'll see dry land again

Would you love me more

If I killed someone for you

Would you hold my hand

They're the same ones that I used

When I killed someone for you

Would you turn me in

When they say I'm on the loose

Would you hide me when

My face is on the news

'Cause I killed someone for you

He's never gonna make it

All the poor people he's forsaken

Karma is always gonna chase him for his lies

Punch my face

Do it cos I like the pain

Every time you curse my name

I know you want the satisfaction

It's not gonna happen

Knock me out

Kick me when I'm on the ground

It's only gonna let you down

Come the lightning and the thunder

You're the one who'll suffer

He said, "I wouldn't lie

You should not go to that tree

The serpent knows

The apple grows from a forbidden seed

Oh, you want what you can't have

But you've got all the things you need"

There was Adam, there was Eve, and there was Steve

That night I put my youth in a casket

And buried it inside of me

That night I saw through all the magic

Now I'm a witness to the death of a hero

Could you find a way to let me down slowly?

A little sympathy, I hope you can show me

If you wanna go, then I'll be so lonely

If you're leaving, baby let me down slowly

Let me down, down

Let me down, down

Let me down, let me down

Down, let me down, down

Let me down

If you wanna go, then I'll be so lonely

If you're leaving, baby let me down slowly

There's gotta be a reason that I here on earth

Gotta be a reason for the dust and the dirt

The changing of the seasons never change my hurt

So what's it worth? What's it worth?

The world's not perfect, but is not that bad

If we got each other, and that's all we have

I will be your mother, and I'll hold your hand

You should know I'll be there for you

Hmm

Hmm

Hmm um

You should know I'll be there for you
