hello and welcome to Klondike rush in about three minutes

it is a game for 2 to 5 players
there is no solo mode
playing time is around an hour
it's a moderately complex game
the mad rush for Klondike Gold is on
four major mining companies are competing for the best real estate
can you invest wisely in these companies and realize the best return on investment?
and what is that hulking mass moving off in the distance
the winner is the player with the most wealth at the end of the game
the game ends once all mines have been placed
or all players have run out of cash
competitive: only one player can have the most money and win this game
Auctions: one round auctions are the cornerstone of the game
set collection: both deeds and goods need to be collected in sets
At the start of the game each player is given $30 and a profit card
each turn the active player will turn over a company card for players to bid on
each company card is for one of the four mining companies as noted by the color on the card
and will have a mixture of shares, order crates and mines on it
the auction starts with the active plan and proceeds clockwise
for example the active player bids 5, the next player bids 6
the third player is broke so does not bid and the fourth player passes
Auctions only go one round so the second player wins a card and claims the order and mine
The active player can then place mines in this case they have two red mines
the first mine is placed here and costs $2 as shown by the number on the connecting line from the nearest red mine
they also claim the moose token
the second mine costs the same and also grants them a moose
fortunately that player had an order for moose. So spends those tokens to claim $7
if a mine of any color occupies both spots on a line the cost of that mine is reduced to one
so placing a green mine here only costs $4
whenever a mine is placed raise the share value of that company by one step
the active player can also use their profit card and for each share in a company they gain the company's value and dollars
so with one share in the green company that is $4
play continues until the company deck runs out or no players have any money left and have used their profit cards
at the end of the game players collect money as though using the propfit card again
and the player with the most sighting tokens claims a $25 reward
the winner is the player with the most money in hand
why would you like this game
Klondike Rush is an unusual game.
an auction game that really rewards being thrifty on occasion and bold and others
the board evolves in interesting ways and timing your purchases so you can get the best placements in order to fill orders takes a lot of skill
Chaining together placements and orders can be very satisfying
the starting city can also be placed anywhere on the map creating a different layout each time
the optional last bid cards also add an extra tactical element to the one round bidding mechanic
the best thing about this game is a single round auction
it keeps the game moving at a good pace
however once you run out of money and used your profit card there is little you can do but watch the other players continue to play
this can lead to a period of play where one player has money and no one else does
and they can simply get every remaining card for $1 each
also while the mine company values fluctuate throughout the game they can very easily all end on the same value
this makes it feel like those early purchasing decisions really didn't matter
and the gold rush Yeti sighting theme is pretty thin
especially compared to Red Ravens high standards in this regard
for richer more thematic game from Red Raven check out empires of the void 2 or the ancient world
or if you're a fan of gold rush on the Discovery Channel like I am
and want a thematic gold mining game check out pay dirt

WHEN WE DELIVER THE GIFT OF JESUS TO OTHERS
AND THEY RECEIVE HIM, WE SHOULD ALWAYS PRAISE GOD;
JUST LIKE THE HEAVENLY HOST DID ON THAT DAY
THAT JESUS WAS BORN.
THE BIBLE LETS US KNOW THAT THE SHEPHERDS
CAME WITH HASTE, MEANING THAT THEY CAME QUICKLY;
AND FOUND MARY AND JOSEPH
AND A BABE LYING IN THE MANGER.
WHEN YOU FIND JESUS,

AND THAT IS WHAT THE SHEPHERDS DID.
AND IN LUKE 2:17,
"AND WHEN THEY" (MEANING THE SHEPHERDS) "HAD SEEN IT,
THEY MADE KNOWN ABROAD THE SAYING
WHICH WAS TOLD THEM CONCERNING THIS CHILD."
WE HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO DELIVER
THE GIFT OF JESUS, JUST LIKE THE SHEPHERDS DID.
THE EARLY CHURCH HAD THE RESPONSIBILITY
OF DELIVERING THE GIFT OF JESUS,
BUT THAT ROAD WAS NOT AN EASY ONE.
IN THE EIGHTH CHAPTER OF ACTS IT TELLS HOW SAUL
WAS CAUSING HAVOC TO THE EARLY CHURCH,
ENTERING INTO THEIR HOUSES
AND MEN AND WOMEN WERE BEING THROWN INTO PRISON.
THE EARLY CHRISTIANS WERE SCATTERED ABROAD,
BUT THEY STILL WENT OUT
AND DELIVERED THE GIFT OF JESUS.
IN ACTS 8:5,
"THEN PHILIP WENT DOWN TO THE CITY OF SAMARIA,"
AND PREACHED JESUS CHR- EXCUSE ME,
"AND PREACHED CHRIST UNTO THEM."
AND PHILIP PRAYED FOR THE SICK AND AFFLICTED
AND THEY WERE HEALED AND DELIVERED.
JESUS PAID THE PRICE SO THAT WE COULD HAVE
MIRACLES AND HEALINGS.
IN ISAIAH 53:5,
"BUT HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS,

WHEN PHILLIP WAS PREACHING THE THINGS
CONCERNING THE KINGDOM OF GOD,
IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST,
THE PEOPLE WERE BAPTIZED BOTH MEN AND WOMEN.
THEY WERE RECEIVING THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL,
THE GIFT OF JESUS CHRIST.

"AND THE PEOPLE WITH ONE ACCORD
GAVE HEED UNTO THOSE THINGS WHICH PHILIP SPAKE,
HEARING AND SEEING THE MIRACLES WHICH HE DID."
PHILIP HAD GREAT SUCCESS DELIVERING
THE GIFT OF JESUS TO THE PEOPLE.
AFTER PHILLIP PREACHED TO THE SAMARITAN PEOPLE,
THE HOLY GHOST MOVED ON HIM TO GO TO THE DESERT.
NOW THIS WAS A BIG CHANGE;
ONE MOMENT HE'S CONDUCTING A GREAT REVIVAL
AND NOW HE'S BEING CALLED TO
THIS PLACE OF DESOLATION.
IN THE NATURAL, IT WOULD BE EASY TO THINK
TO STAY WHERE YOU'RE HAVING GREAT SUCCESS
OF PEOPLE RECEIVING THE GIFT OF JESUS.
BUT GOD'S THOUGHTS ARE HIGHER THAN OUR THOUGHTS
AND HIS WAYS ARE HIGHER THAN OUR WAYS.
AND THE ANGEL OF THE LORD TOLD PHILIP TO GO TO GAZA,
WHICH WAS DESERT.
THE HOLY GHOST MOVED ON PHILIP TO DELIVER
THE GIFT OF JESUS TO A SOUL THAT WAS IN THAT DESERT.
WHEN YOU'RE LEAD BY THE HOLY GHOST,
HE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO HESITATE.
PHILIP LEFT RIGHT AWAY.
HE WENT BY FAITH, NOT BY HIS FEELINGS.
IN THE DESERT, THERE WAS A MAN TRAVELING TO ETHIOPIA,
WHO WAS RETURNING FROM HIS VISIT IN JERUSALEM.
THE MAN WAS READING THE WRITINGS OF ISAIAH.
AND EVEN THOUGH HE WAS AN EDUCATED MAN OF HIGH STANDING,
HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS READING.
IT WAS GOOD THAT PHILIP WAS YIELDED TO THE HOLY GHOST
BECAUSE HE WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE
AT THE RIGHT TIME TO HELP THIS ETHIOPIAN MAN.
IN ACTS 8:29-31,
"THEN THE SPIRIT SAID UNTO PHILIP,
GO NEAR, AND JOIN THYSELF TO THIS CHARIOT.
AND PHILIP RAN THITHER TO HIM,
AND HEARD HIM READ OF THE PROPHET ESAIAS,
AND SAID, UNDERSTANDEST THOU WHAT THOU READEST?

EXCEPT SOME MAN SHOULD GUIDE ME?

THE HOLY GHOST GETS PEOPLE READY
TO RECEIVE THE GIFT OF JESUS.
IT WAS UP TO PHILIP TO DELIVER THE GIFT OF JESUS
WHEN THE HOLY GHOST MOVED ON HIM.
GOD'S TIMINIG WAS PERFECT.
AS THIS MOVING CHARIOT IS DRIVING BY PHILIP,
RIGHT AT THE EXACT MOMENT THIS ETHIOPIAN MAN
IS READING THE SCRIPTURE ABOUT JESUS.
THE HOLY GHOST KNEW THAT THIS MAN
WAS READY FOR SALVATION.
AND WHEN PHILIP ASKED HIM IF HE UNDERSTOOD
WHAT HE WAS READING,
THE DOOR WAS OPEN TO TEACH THE MAN
ABOUT THE GIFT OF JESUS.
PHILIP HAD DELIVERED THE GIFT OF JESUS
TO THIS HUNGRY SOUL, AS THEY TRAVELED.
AND THE ETHIOPIAN MAN SAID, "HERE IS WATER;
WHAT DOTH HINDER ME TO BE BAPTIZED?"
PHILIP LET HIM KNOW THAT IF HE BELIEVED
IN ALL HIS HEART, HE MAY BE SAVED.
AND THE ETHIOPIAN MAN SAID,
"I BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD."
SO PHILIP AND THIS ETHIOPIAN MAN
WENT DOWN TO THE WATER AND PHILIP BAPTIZED HIM.
THIS ETHIOPIAN MAN ACCEPTED THE GIFT OF JESUS.
WHEN THEY CAME OUT OF THE WATER,
THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAUGHT PHILIP AWAY,
AND THE ETHIOPIAN MAN SAW HIM NO MORE.
THE HOLY GHOST TOOK PHILIP TO ANOTHER CITY
TO DELIVER THE GIFT OF JESUS.
AND NO DOUBT THIS ETHIOPIAN MAN WENT BACK
TO HIS COUNTRY DELIVERING THE GIFT OF JESUS.
THE GIFT OF JESUS IS A GIFT THAT EVERYONE
CAN RECEIVE AND DELIVER TO OTHERS.
WHEN PAUL AND SILAS WERE DELIVERING
THE GIFT OF JESUS
AND DOING A GREAT WORK FOR THE LORD,
THEY WERE HEADING UP FOR PRAYER
AND A CERTAIN DAMSEL POSSESSED
WITH A SPIRIT OF DIVINATION MET THEM.
NOW THIS WOMAN BROUGHT HER MASTERS MUCH GAIN.
AND AS SHE WAS FOLLOWING PAUL AND SILAS, SHE WOULD SAY,
"THESE MEN ARE THE SERVANTS OF THE MOST HIGH GOD,
WHICH SHOW US THE WAY OF SALVATION."
FINALLY AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF HINDERING PAUL AND SILAS,
PAUL IS SO GRIEVED, HE TURNS AND SAYS TO THE SPIRIT,
"I COMMAND THEE IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST
COME OUT OF HER."
PAUL KNEW THAT THIS WOMAN NEEDED DELIVERANCE.
NOW THIS YOUNG WOMAN'S MASTERS WERE NOT HAPPY
ABOUT HER DELIVERANCE.
SOMETIMES UNSAVED PEOPLE ARE NOT HAPPY
WHEN SOMEONE RECEIVES THEIR DELIVERANCE AND SALVATION.
IT'S USUALLY FOR SELFISH REASONS.
I KNOW IN MY LIFE WHEN I GOT SAVED,
I HAD LITTLE IN COMMON WITH MY WORLDLY FRIENDS;
AND THEY WOULD HAVE RATHER HAD THE OLD ME BACK.
THEY JUST DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE GIFT OF JESUS.
THE SLAVE GIRL'S MASTERS DIDN'T CARE ABOUT HER SOUL.
THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT THEY WERE LOSING
A LOT OF MONEY.
IN FACT, THEY WERE SO ANGRY THAT THEY BROUGHT
PAUL AND SILAS TO THE MAGISTRATES TO COMPLAIN.
IN ACTS 16:19-24,
"AND WHEN HER MASTERS SAW
THAT THE HOPE OF THEIR GAINS WAS GONE,
THEY CAUGHT PAUL AND SILAS, AND DREW THEM
INTO THE MARKETPLACE UNTO THE RULERS.
AND BROUGHT THEM TO THE MAGISTRATES, SAYING,
THESE MEN, BEING JEWS, DO EXCEEDINLY TROUBLE OUR CITY,
AND TEACH CUSTOMS, WHICH ARE NOT LAWFUL
FOR US TO RECEIVE, NEITHER TO OBSERVE, BEING ROMANS.

THEY CAST THEM INTO PRISON,
CHARGING THE JAILOR TO KEEP THEM SAFELY:
WHO, HAVING RECEIVED SUCH A CHARGE,
THRUST THEM INTO THE INNER PRISON,
AND MADE THEIR FEET FAST IN THE STOCKS."
AFTER MANY STRIPES WERE LAID ON PAUL AND SILAS,
THEY WERE THROWN INTO PRISON.
IN THE NATURAL IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING
IS GOING PAUL AND SILAS' WAY.
THEY DO A GOOD DEED AND THEY'RE WHIPPED
AND THROWN INTO PRISON.
AT THIS POINT MOST CHRISTIANS
IN THEIR SITUATION MIGHT BE ASKING, "WHY?"
INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON SOULS.
PAUL AND SILAS WERE IN PRISON
AND THEY HAD PERFECT PEACE.
THEY WERE NOT COMPLAINING
OR CRYING ABOUT HOW THEY WERE BEATEN.
NO, THEY WERE SINGING PRAISES UNTO GOD.
NO DOUBT, THE HOLY GHOST PLACED THEM
IN THE INNERMOST PART OF THE PRISON
SO THAT EVERYONE COULD HEAR
PAUL AND SILAS SING PRAISES.
IN ACTS 16:25, 26,
"AND AT MIDNIGHT PAUL AND SILAS PRAYED,
AND SANG PRAISES UNTO GOD:
AND THE PRISONERS HEARD THEM.
AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS A GREAT EARTHQUAKE,
SO THAT THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE PRISON WERE SHAKEN:
AND IMMEDIATELY ALL THE DOORS WERE OPENED,
AND EVERY ONE'S BANDS WERE LOOSED."
PAUL AND SILAS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ESCAPE,
BUT SOULS WERE HANGING IN THE BALANCE
AND THEY WERE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE HOLY GHOST.
WHEN THE KEEPER OF THE PRISON WAS READY TO COMMIT SUICIDE
BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THAT THE PRISONERS HAD ESCAPED,
PAUL CRIED OUT WITH A LOUD VOICE
AND LET THE KEEPER KNOW THAT THEY WERE ALL STILL THERE.
IN ACTS 16:29-31,
"THEN HE" (MEANING THE KEEPER)
"CALLED FOR A LIGHT, AND SPRANG IN,
AND CAME TREMBLING, AND FELL DOWN BEFORE PAUL AND SILAS,
AND BROUGHT THEM OUT,
AND SAID, SIRS, WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
AND THEY SAID, BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST,
AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED, AND THY HOUSE."
BECAUSE PAUL AND SILAS HAD THEIR MINDS
STAYED ON THE LORD AND TRUSTED IN GOD,
THE HOLY GHOST WAS ABLE TO FEED THEM GOD'S THOUGHTS
AND DIRECT THEM HOW
GOD WANTED THEIR SITUATION TO BE HANDLED.
JUST THINK, PAUL AND SILAS WERE BEATEN,
THROWN INTO PRISON
AND EXPERIENCED A GREAT EARTHQUAKE.
BUT THE END RESULT WAS A YOUNG WOMAN WHO WAS BOUND
BY THE SPIRIT- BY A SPIRIT
AND FORCED TO DO THE DEVIL'S WORK,
RECEIVED HER DELIVERANCE.
AND THE KEEPER OF THE PRISON AND HIS FAMILY
WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE THE GIFT OF JESUS.
I'M SURE THE KEEPER OF THE PRISON
RECOGNIZED JESUS IN PAUL AND SILAS
BECAUSE HE AND HIS FAMILY WANTED TO GET SAVED.

Rich Casanova here alongside Michael Moore we are ready set to go all
engines are on a full steam ahead for this episode of Non Profits Radio which
is an exciting day for us here at the pro business channel a show that's been
in the works for way too long and as we were sharing a couple other episodes
before we went on the air as well we thought early on how could we give
back to not to the community on behalf of Pro Business Channel could we adopt a
certain non profit could we put some funds aside but as an emerging you know
brand as many startups are you know they're in the early stages maybe of
startups or nonprofits you know we're not exactly have the deep pockets that a
major fortune 100 company has so we thought we had what's called a BFO which
is Michael Moore in flash blinding flash to the obvious right we thought wait a
second we have this amazing platform over half a million downloads in terms
of our audience we're on 30 syndicated platforms and we created something we
were excited about so we thought let's underwrite the cost and create a show
just for nonprofits and when we speak nonprofits more like the local community
based not just here in Atlanta but in their own community right and so hence
is the official today's launch of nonprofits radio sound effects - stay

joining us in the studio Michael's going to do the introduction but we were
talking before we went on the air Joe Labriola is joining us and with some
second helpings and a shout-out to Louise which I'll help make this
possible right go absolutely right she's one of us volunteers and sticking around
right yes you put her in the right job didn't let her drive I understand she
doesn't drive it you got it you guys need to give this the next episode yeah
we need to have her with us all right but Joe is the executive director Joe
Labriola is the executive director of self like second helpings Atlanta there
are nonprofit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce the hunger
and food waste in metropolitan Atlanta by rescuing healthy nutritious and
surplus food and delivering it to those in need
prior to joining second helpings in back in May of 2015 he was vice president of
product marketing for PGI that's probably another whole story and she
marketing officer of enterprise information management and then you
weren't IBM her before that for say for how long because you look a lot younger
than 39 to me thank you all right so Joe you know you took a
pretty varied path to get here to recycling food so talk to me about
living about that um I spent almost 35 years in the corporate world
it was great I got to work with wonderful people I traveled the world
and worked on products and services that made a difference but after a while it
just wasn't feeding my soul and I knew I needed to do something different and I
was out hiking the Appalachian Trail one day my wife had told me you really need
to find a job she said don't come back don't come back until you figure out
what you're gonna be when you grow up and I thought well this trail is about
1,400 miles long I'll see you in about eight months yeah because you said one
day that was just one day of the trip oh you didn't do it the end all in 24 hours
yeah I get that you're Jo letter but I started having a conversation with
myself and what was my next job going to be and I realized it wasn't what my next
job was the question I should have been asking is what makes me happy and that
was a quick answer it's helping other people came down off the mountain drove
home and told my wife Chan I'm gonna run my own nonprofit Wow I had been
volunteering at second helpings so I was already familiar with with them and ten
days later there was an ad that said they were going to expand operations
hire their first ever executive directors three months later I had the
job right there you are amen amen that's awesome I mean it is kind of
those chapters of lies we go through right so in those early days you were
inspired by the people you worked with and so forth
and you like you said you travel around the world but now you know what's next
right how can I give back or you know what would like you said I love the
phrase you said what would fuel you or inspire you or you just makes me happy
yeah it makes you happy your soul feeds the soul I think is what you're saying
speaking of feeding so give us your best when people say what do you all do
what's the answer to that so we're a non-profit food rescue organization
that focuses on rescuing healthy nutritious food and delivering it to a
network of partner agencies who feed the hungry talk about that Network what does
that look like we've got currently over 80 food donors
that we pick up food from on a scheduled basis every single week
grocery stores big box retailers corporate kitchens farmers markets large
event venues and we focus on two types of food kind of healthy nutritious
perishable food so dairy deli bakery and produce and then food that's been
prepared and then the other end of our network we have 55 partner agencies that
we work with and through who feed the hungry
there are combination of food pantries community meal providers or transitional
or emergency housing facilities and the way we make the connection between those
end points in our network is using a community of nearly 500 volunteers who
support our mission and they use something that we develop called the 90
minute model we match them with routes that get them from their home place of
work place of worship or where they go to school they use their own vehicles we
get them dispatched to a food donor they pick the food up immediately transport
deliver to a partner agency get back to where they started in 90 minutes or less
well and what we're able to offer people is a high impact volunteer experience
with a relatively low impact on busy schedules that is so well said and so
succinct and I was writing some notes here 500 volunteers so you who overseas
or manages all that well you know I'm really blessed to have I think the best
staff in the food rescue business we're a small tight group and I've got folks
that I mean basically if you look at what we're doing we're logistics
organism exactly and so totally just-in-time you know and people will
say you know ten words or less and it's like well we're either the UPS or FedEx
of surplus food and it really is getting healthy food very quickly to people who
need it and to use another analogy almost like the Amazon I mean they're
very efficient at what they do right and you have to be if you're running an odd
fit especially on that scale and to involve those 5055 partnerships but I
love this whole 90-minute because people can wrap this because I think most
people in their hearts somewhere feel like I want to do something good I want
to volunteer maybe they're not in the position of life that they can dedicate
and become an executive director or found a non-profit or give it 40 hours a
week but you say a 90 minute trip now how often do they do those trips is it
based on their schedule what permits are they they can sign up once a week once a
month on demand right on demand as a
substitute driver you know and what we find is everybody's got 90 minutes yeah
and what I what I say to folks that are considering becoming a volunteer is
money back guarantee this would be the best night of your week or month because
at the end of the day you can do the math to figure out how many meals
depending on where you're going it could be dozens hundreds even thousands of
people will eat as a result of that 90-minute investment well I know you
have some great stories about some of those individual experiences can you
share one of those with us about want somebody's 90 minute trip yeah yeah I'll
give you a personal example about you change the name of that one if you want
we just added that to PBC today yeah you're the first candidate
congratulations yep so we rescue food from the new mercedes-benz Stadium okay
we're getting food out of the 200 luxury suites and the club's whoa
so it's an enormous amount of food and it's not just the volume and the quality
of the food it's the mix oftentimes we'll rescue we've had rescues range
from a thousand pounds to four thousand pounds for an event
Wow and sometimes almost half of that food is proteins well so I remember
being down at the stadium recently for a pickup and one of the folks who works in
the kitchen came over and said well you're the food guy yes he said you know
we're really proud to be working with you knowing that this food is going out
into the neighborhood and he got a little quiet and then he said where's
the food going today so I looked at the cheat sheet and I said here are the
agencies that were delivering it to and one
happened to be the Atlanta mission and he got quiet again and then he said you
know two years ago I was homeless and I used to go to the Atlanta mission well
that was a place I could knew I would get a healthy nutritious meal and he
says I'm really so pleased now that I've gotten my life turned around and now I'm
on the other side helping preparing this like me
that's unbelievable and so we rescue enough food every day to feed about
3,500 people and that's 3,500 individual stories that all have some meaning like
that and when we like to think we're giving people a hand up and allow them
to move beyond basic needs I said this in next meal and many people don't have
that in Georgia well I'm glad Michael asked that question to tell the story
because you know we're looking at these the stats you know the 500 volunteers
the 55 partnerships the 80 food donor donors and so forth a lot of times it's
just numbers but I had chills just visualizing that story just you just
shared that's that's like you can't get more full full circle than that right
I imagine that what that person that guy must have felt you know I mean from
going homeless to that that food being donated to the shelter that he you know
helped turn his life around I mean it's just I'm almost speechless which is
pretty rare yeah so Joanne you in your process of as you said you were very
tight-knit and very efficient and effective administrative staff so you've
got being an IBM er I'm sure you use good tools there yeah it's wonder about
technologies you've made some administrative changes I'm sure you
brought some improvement there was this talk about what nonprofits experience
and how they grow and how the internal stuff happens too we don't we don't
think about we just get our cars robbed 90 minutes you made it really easy for
us well it is all about making it simple and we recognize that we're competing
with other nonprofits for volunteers time so making sure that it's a good
experience is really important to us you know having had the benefit of over 35
years of corporate experience being able to bring that into a nonprofit
environment has been huge oh yeah and you know rich one of the things
talked about was investments in technology right so one of the early
investments we made was in a platform called Salesforce yeah we figure while
IBM uses it General Electric uses it is probably good enough for second and it's
really been transformative it's really allowed us to scale our operations
without necessarily throwing lots of people at it and what we're trying to do
is to continue to use technology as a way one to be more efficient and
secondly to improve the volunteer experience so we're working with a
company right now who's building a mobile app for us that would I wrote in
my notes is there an app for this right gonna be an app for a second helping so
it's in process I expect over the course of the next mmm
six to eight weeks we'll have a beta version available for some of our
volunteers to work on and what are some of the moving parts for that app is that
connecting those eighty you know sources and then syncing the volunteers like
uber kind of scenario where they know their route on the app so to speak right
so every every one of our volunteers that signed up for a shift three days
before their scheduled pickup they get a reminder email three days fill up their
car gives it quite a time to get ready it reminds them afterwards to report
their pounds it'll provide them you know addresses contact information pickup and
delivery instructions so it's really a tool that they can have in their hand to
make every rescue go smoothly I mean this is cool with Salesforce we just
interviewed one of the chief marketing officers before Salesforce corporate out
of New York but then we have a massive presence here now they just renamed
right out in our backyard out our window here the Salesforce towers now so a
major that's interesting the connection there we went to a Salesforce event boot
camp as well but so this how it all sounds great
so Joe what's the challenge here right what's your biggest ask or challenge you
know if you had that magic wand so that you know we've really got a strategy
that focuses on three things one is expanding our food rescue
operations so we can make a bigger impact we want to do that in a
controlled deliberate manner the second thing is raising money to
fuel that expansion and then the third thing and you know platforms like this
are essential to it is raising levels of awareness and appreciation for what we
do because if we don't get the third thing right right we'll never get the
first and second thing to work for us so what we're always challenged with is
finding enough volunteers to help us with our food rescues there is an
enormous amount of surplus food out there we're just scratching the surface
well speaking of sort of I want to talk about your goal maybe the next year 12
months before we do that we were talking before we went on the air of talking
about surplus food you know often we hear some of the legal challenges with
restaurants or groups that want to donate food but they're they're kind of
hesitant you know they have this like fear factor built in I mean how do you
address that or what are those real concerns or so there's there's really
three things that we point people to when they raise those objections or
concerns one is there's a federal piece of legislation called the bill Emerson
Good Samaritan Act okay it sets a very high bar of negligence that if everybody
in the food recovery chain acts in good faith nobody can be held liable nice the
second thing we point people to is our 90 minute model it's kind of like going
grocery shopping right and then the third thing we do is and I worked for
IBM so I have a powerpoint charge for everything nice but I will slide across
the table a PowerPoint chart that has the logos of our food donors they're
local they're national they're international brands that are putting
their reputations it's okay for them it must be okay for you and that's that's
that's the argument and what I find is 99 times out of a hundred that's a
compelling enough argument to get people to move one that Good Samaritan Law I
don't know that most people are aware of that but that pretty much checks a lot
of boxes right because with that in mind I would imagine I mean correct me if I'm
wrong but I think the intent there would be so long as most everybody in the
organization has the best of intentions and is not doing anything deliberately
to cause an issue then good luck at trying to pursue any action against that
right it exists that exactly and it served us well yeah
all right so finally we get just a minute left here we want to definitely

that's important to us um you know I think our next major focus is going to
be continuing to recruit volunteers to help us place new sources of food on the
west side and the south side of town it's areas that we aren't deeply
penetrated in so we really need to build up our community of volunteers and those
volunteers can also come from companies as part of an employee engagement
opportunity we love that conversation our middle name is business pro-business
channel so many of our listeners are business owners founders and CEOs so
that's I mean just give us a quick little follow-up to that how would
businesses get involved so their employees get credits or service hours
service hours so they could do things like adopt a route where oh my
subcontract pickups and deliveries to them we have a lot of companies that do
days of service where yeah pack sack lunches or kids after-school snack packs
for us then to deliver to our network of partner agents I love that idea so just
