Selamat Petang from Malaysia and
welcome to our Channel, today we're in
Georgetown to try three heritage dishes
of Penang.
[Music]
First food we gonna try for you
for this heritage video is Char Kuey Teow
and we came to Kimberly Street Market
open only in the evening where
there is the best stall for this dish!
[Music]
only see the making of this dish worth
the walk.
It wasn't that far, but still
can't wait to try it, cause was made
on charcoal. let's take a big bite.
oh yeah oh yeah
[Music]
the noodle are nice, tender, medium size
as you can see. A little spicy,
and beautiful soy beans,
they're still very crunchy.
this a bit similar to Pad Thai
but this are not sweet at all.
Time for the prawn...
still tender inside
perfect cooking timing, delicious dish!
Now it's my turn to try Char Kuey Teow
famous Penand dish made by flat noodles
lot of eggs, but you can it without too.
soy beans, fried pork & prawns.
[Music]
[Music]
Noodles have a nice sticky texture,
together with the piquant taste of prawns
and nice taste of the pork
it's all very nice, not sweet at all,
with a little spiciness.
[Music]
To find Nasi Lemak we came to Sri Weld
food court in Georgetown.
A very different food court,
very clean and tide.
Few stalls with different cuisines.
Ali Nasi Lemak, is the first stall
at the entrance, right before getting
inside the food court.
[Music]
[Music]
We bought 2 different type of Nasi Lemak:
one with squids, one with fish.
I don't know which one I'll catch first
This package is made by pandan leaves
used like cover for the food
and we'll use as plate as well.
I'll open this pandan leave...
trying to be careful...
There is a smaller leave for the rice,
and a bigger to pack it.
Nasi Lemak is fragrant rice, cooked
in coconut milk
and served with fish and anchovies
in the original recipe.
Now much more toppings are added.
This is rice with squids.
I will try to take it all
together...
It smells of dry fish, nice!
It gives much appetite...
[Music]
I feel anchovies,
It really hit you the taste,
spicy,
but rice is so delicate,
it was cooked in coconut milk
so it's very soft,
and it make it very creamy!
Truth that I'm very excited to eat from the
leaves. To me is something so ancient,
something that remind me the past
the human evolution. I will take a full
spoon, I love squids
so I'm really cawing to try this
[Music]
it is a unique taste, nothing I ever tasted
before. There is a little bit of
spiciness. But It's very
nice
the rice is made giving a soft taste
and not very hitting.
A background of spiciness
and the lovely feeling of the fishy taste.
this very nice! Okay now it's my turn to
unwrap the leave, hope I do it good..
yes, I do it very good!
I can see the big big piece of fish.
Is supposed to be like a big sardine,
or similar. It's whole, while I cut
I feel the skin and bones.
...a bit hard...
I'll use the help of my fingers
I think I'll eat it all together
OK, first the fish alone
to check the feeling to chew flesh
together with the bones
Yeah, the feeling similar to dry sardines.
Or other similar small
fishes of which you can eat everything.
you get the feeling of the bones
crunching under your teeth.
The base sauce feels like tomato paste.
Very concentrated tomato taste,
this give lightness, not fishy.
probably first dish was more fishy.
Now I will take it with rice....
oh it's very nice it's very rich taste.
But, at the same time very delicate your
time to try Yulia!
We like so much the first, that we
rushed to try next one.
I already clean the fish from the bones,
you can and you see is yellowish
probably due to curry...
'll I pick up rice,
fish and this beautiful sauce
It's true!
less fishy somehow,
rice same delicate as the first one
less spicy. All together a perfect snack!
Here we are, a bit outside
Georgetown, to try our third heritage
Penang dish. And this will be the famous
fish soup Assam Laksa!
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
Here is our Assam Laksa.
this is the original Penang Laksa.
There are lot of ingredients, the base is
is a sour fish soup with
tamarind that give this reddish color,
there are chili peppers,
big noodles,
some greens, and let me try to discover
other ingredients...
Soup's so rich there is almost no broth!
I'll try broth first then...
and this mix of ingredients.
[Music]
this is so beautiful!
Very sour, the test of fish, and I...
lost myself cause is such European taste,
it remind me so much
a French fish soup or bisque.
It's amazing!
Let me try it all together now:
you can see the thick noodles,
hmm mm hmm
this is mint, wow!
this is the festive for the taste!
Sugar Cane drink made by the guy over there
now I will deep myself in the bowl
I see a lot of things here:
mint, chili, noodles...
I don't mind a hint of spiciness
I'll skip the broth and go
straight to the big noodles!
WOW!
this is a delicious soup! I love the mix
of the mint, strong taste of fresh mint
together with the sourness of tamarind
and the thick thick noodles, yummy!
What a unique
experience to arrive to this place
that we saw many times in movies,
and finally taste it! This place is located
fifteen-twenty minutes car drive
distance from the center of Georgetown
but it's really worth the trip!
The 2 other heritage dishes:
Nasi Lemak and Char Kuey Teow,
were also very beautiful experiences
worth the try, and shows the tradition of
Penang cuisine. If you coming to Penang,
We suggest you to try 3 heritage dishes.
