He personifies what a leader should be.
He's wise, compassionate, and a more than worthy warrior.
In hopes of bringing his world back to a golden era he strives to rebuild.
But as war rages on he becomes hardened and his options become smaller.
Because sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
His name is Sentinel Prime.
This is his origin story.

What's up you guys? My name is RBG and welcome to my video segment, Transformers Movie Universe History.
In a previous episode I did a video covering the origins of our old Autobot who's built to last, Ironhide.
At the time of making this video I'm not sure how many views it's garnered since this is a Patreon sponsored upload.
But I just wanna say thanks in advance to those who took time out of their day to watch & leave a comment.
As mentioned in all my videos that I myself am well aware of the hate the Bay films receive and have to agree that most of it is warranted.
But I wanna take you guys on a journey and show you some of the positives this universe has to offer
because if we're gonna be honest there are certain characters in the films that don't get their just due.
Just a heads up if you haven't seen the movies or read the comic book material used in this video, it will come off a bit spoilerish.
So be advised.
In today's video we'll be uncovering the origins of the legendary warrior thought to have been lost long ago, Sentinel Prime.
Now this is an origin that I've been dying to make for a while now and I know a lot of you have wanted see it.
Sentinel Prime is essentially a love letter written to the fans wrapped up in a shiny metal envelope.
Not only is he 1 of the most compelling villains we've seen in the entire lineup of TF movies but he's also a huge nod to the source material.
Through the grace of the Cybertronian Gods, Michael Bay was very fortunate enough to get the late Leonard Nimoy to return to the Transformers franchise.
But it wasn't because he originally voiced Galvatron in the original movie, oh no.
It was because Leonard was married to his cousin, Susan Bay.
Talk about divine intervention.
"With this I shall make you my slave."
"So lost you are, Optimus. On Cybertron we were gods!"
In my opinion I cannot see anyone else doing the voice for such an iconic character.
Sentinel Prime for the most part was a course correct for the TF films that unfortunately Bay didn't take advantage of going forward.
He's such a compelling villain that fans can sort of relate to and til this day I've seen none who could top him from the sequels.
Industrial Light & Magic did an excellent job with his design giving him this old but regal look with the pirate looking beard & tassels hanging down from his chest.
And the pointy shoulders & shapes makes me believe that they drew inspiration from classic Japanese mech designs.
And is it me or does he look a lot like Alpha Trion?
But with all that said let's go ahead and jump into this origin.
For my references I'll be using the Transformers Foundation issues.
I'll also be using the Dark of the Moon comics to flesh out some of the smaller details.
Sentinel Prime was a direct descendant of the first Cybertronian, Primus, and was believed to be the last of the Primes.
A high ranking class of transformers who ruled Cybertron eons ago.
Formed by the first seven Cybertronians, the Dynasty ruled Cybertron and protected the AllSpark until they were betrayed by one of their own.
Sentinel told tales to his much younger Cybertronian brethren of how the Dynasty of Primes had called upon a legendary artifact, the star-powered AllSpark, to give life to their world.
But the AllSpark had been lost to history, and their world had tumbled through the cosmos without a star to orbit for eons.
Sentinel Prime had plans to rectify this, and he gathered followers who believed in his path to a new age of life on Cybertron.
With the help of Optimus, Megatron, and their legions, they searched the planet for the legendary artifact and a way to power it.
However, there were the Thetacons, a tribe of separatist Transformers who disbelieved in Sentinel Prime's vision, and warred against him and his followers.
While Sentinel's other pupils held off an attack by the heretic Thetacons,
Wheeljack's technical skills went to work creating a device that, once linked to the AllSpark, warped time and space, teleporting a sun into Cybertronian space.
"I am relativistically warping space-time in seventeen dimensions to within a tolerance of three microns" Says Wheeljack
"I'll need at least five more minutes."
"The Thetacons are breaching our defenses" said Sentinel
"We heard. Follow my lead, Optimus!"
before he could jump into action Optimus transforms and says
"Megatron..you'll have to keep up with me! "
"Elita-One..you and Shockwave cover our right flank. Megatron..we'll go up the middle. And let's try not to kill anyone..These may be Thetacons, but they're still Transformers!"
The Autobots went on a full scale assault with the brutal tribe losing a lot of soldiers during the battle.
But they quickly stop when they notice a bright light emanate over the horizon of Cybertron.
Through Wheeljack's technical genius, a sun is teleported into the skies above Cybertron, and its energy revitalizes the AllSpark,
filling Cybertron with energon, and new life.
"We've done it, haven't we Wheeljack? After so many hundreds of Quartexes..of war and famine.."
"Indeed. It seems we've save the world, Prime."
Seeing that Sentinel's teachings were right all along, the Thetacons lay down their arms.
And thus the planet was unified once more.
With life restored to Cybertron, new hatchlings emerging at a rapid rate, and the Thetacons building a temple around the AllSpark as a form of recompense
Optimus decides to accompany Elita-One back to her home city of Metrotitan to see her sisters.
Megatron, however, is far less content, as is Shockwave, who confides in Megatron that is he unsure what a world of peace and so-called "freedom" holds for him.
As Cybertron's new sun sets at the end of its first day, Sentinel calls for Optimus.
"You sent for me"
"Optimus! Yes, come here! See how the sun seems to move across the sky?
"And now it dips beyond the ancient city..but worry not! In mere hours, it will seem to rise again on the horizon opposite.
As Cybertron herself turns so that we may begin a new cycle. Now, go gather your things. We travel to Tripticon when the sky is bright again."
Giving Sentinel a puzzled look Optimus says
"What? S-Sentinel...I wanted to go to Metrotitan with Elita-One. She has-"
"There will be time for that in the future, my boy! We have much to do. Cybertron has not been united since the era of the Primes. We must establish a new government Optimus."
"But...what is there to establish? All the tribal leaders gave their allegiance. Everyone is behind you."
"Optimus..I shall not be leading our people."
Though Sentinel Prime had finally returned the forgotten concept of "freedom" back to Cybertron, he felt he no longer had a part in its path to the future.
Sentinel places his hand on his students shoulder saying
"I am tired. I need to rest. And...I am a uniter. Not a leader. But you...you see how easily you defused the situation between Megatron and your new friend?"
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying it is your destiny to lead the Autobots..Optimus Prime. I believe you to be my lineage. I believe you to be a Prime... And it is your destiny to lead Cybertron."
Optimus humbly takes a step back and says
"Sentinel, I just...after all we've been through to get here...I just don't know."
"We have been through much. All the death...do you know what it was?"
"It was...Transformer killing Transformer. It was insults from generations past becoming tribal blood feuds. We became a planet of killers. Do I know what it was, Sentinel? It was evil."
And Sentinel happily says
"No, Optimus. It was learning."
He turns his attention to the city and continues on saying
"Look at Cybertron now! I know you; I know you need something tangible. Well...see? The future is brighter than the past, Optimus. And it yours to lead us into."
"Sentinel, I...I can't. Despite what you say...I know in my spark, I am not different from my friends. But...you're right. I do need to see what's real...
Learning about Cybertron's past...Finding the truth in the old stories...That is my destiny. I'm not a Prime...But perhaps I can bring some of their good works back to the world."
"Optimus I wish you could decide otherwise. But perhaps one day, when they speak of Cybetron, they'll speak of Science and History rather than war."
"I'm making the right decision, Sentinel. I'm not a warrior. I've never been more sure of anything."
Though Optimus was too humble to accept, not believing Sentinel's claims about his heritage, Megatron overheard their conversation and became jealous of his "brother."
Three solar cycles later, a huge crowd turns out at Cybertron's new capital of Trypticon to hear Sentinel Prime's unification speech
"Transformers of united Cybertron! You placed your faith in me during our eternal night.
"Well, day has finally dawned. And the war is over. "
"But even in this new age of freedom, there lie dangers. Our world is neither tame nor safe."
"The lessons of history tell us to prepare for any eventuality."
"To this end: Cybertron shall be ruled by two separate bodies, working for a common goal."
"The Autobot science division lead by the resourceful Optimus, will excavate our past and improve life in our present."
"Meanwhile Cybertronian defense force, commanded by the valiant Megatron, is charged with protecting our future."
"Together, ALL ARE ONE!"
Although Cybertron thrived on peace it didn't last long.
After two generations of successful shared leadership, Megatron fell under the sway of The Fallen, and reshaped his Defense Force as the Decepticons, declaring war on Cybertron.
Sentinel Prime was at the archaeological dig in Simfur when the first strike took place, and was quick to opt for a technique of self-preservation, rather than attempting to save the Science Division's work.
Optimus soon arrived to fend the Decepticons off, and revealed that his studies had proven the truth of Sentinel's words:
"This marking on my helmet. Arcee fount the same symbol among some of the artifacts we'd dug up. It's proof that Sentinel was right. It's the symbol of the Primes."
"It has always been your nature to need unassailable facts in order to accept the truth."
"And now I do accept it. Like you, I am a Prime."
"What does that mean, Optimus?" Elita One asks
"It means trouble."
As Cybertron was devastated by the worsening war,
Sentinel Prime was forced to make a deal with Megatron to seek out another planet whose resources they can exploit to restore their homeworld.
The chosen planet was the resting place of the Primes' Star Harvester.
Sentinel recreated the Primes' lost space bridge technology, fashioning hundreds of pillars that would form a bridge large enough to teleport Cybertron itself across the cosmos.
With Optimus Prime refusing to adopt a strategy that will result in the wholesale deaths of the Decepticons,
fearing it will make the Autobots no better than them, Sentinel Prime presents an alternate possibility
"How much longer can our planet endure? The War...it's killing Cybertron."
"I believe I have a solution...My experiments have come to fruition. I have created something that will guarentee an end to this war. If that is what our leader chooses."
"You mean we'd be able to crush the Decepticons. Kill the lot of em?" asked Ironhide.
"No. That's the method of our enemy. There has to be a way to win without resorting to wholesale murder."
"You can't be serious! Megatron wouldn't hesitate to destroy us!"
"You came over to our side, Ironhide. You chose us over Megatron. Why?"
Ironhide lowers his head and says
"Because we're better than him. You're right, Prime. It's not the Autobot way."
"Indeed. My invention does present us with another path to victory, Optimus Prime...your forefathers would be proud of you."
Sentinel further explains that the torch had to be brought into contact with the AllSpark to be activated,
so the Autobots launched an attack on the Simfur temple to carry out this action while Sentinel stood by with a spacecraft, the Ark, to await delivery of the active torch.
With Optimus Prime covering them and holding Megatron off, Elita-One, Chromia and Arcee are able to enter the temple and activate the torch,
which Elita then rushes into the hands of Sentinel,
"Starscream's on my trail" says Elita One
"I tried to lose him but"
"But he's Starscream. We'll have to move fast. I will pilot the ark to Optimus and the others at the Temple. Wheeljack, take the second craft to Tyger Pax and get the rest of the Autobots."
"But Sentinel..."
"What would you give to save our world?"
asked Sentinel as he proceeded into the ship
"Anything you know that."
"Then do this for me. Do this and the war's over, old friend."
And Sentinel takes the torch aboard his own Ark and goes to collect Optimus and the warriors battling at Simfur.
Upon arrival, however, the Ark is attacked by Starscream, and is unable to match his firepower.
A huge fireball consumes the vessel... and then, it is gone, with only a few burning spots indicating it had ever existed.
The horrified Autobots fall back, and Optimus Prime embarks on his new mission... to find and kill Megatron for what he has wrought.
In actuality, Sentinel's Ark had not been vaporized as believed
it had been teleported away by the space bridge technology it was outfitted with.
With all hands knocked into stasis by the explosion, the ship automatically jinked through space and time on a series of random space bridge jumps,
until at last, its sensors locked on to the energy of the AllSpark, which had since been ejected from Cybertron and had crash-landed on the planet Earth.
On its penultimate jump, the Ark crossed paths with the Decepticon ship Nemesis,
which had departed Cybertron just as the war was beginning, and was now also following the AllSpark's trail.
The Ark materialized from its jump into the same physical space as the Nemesis,
crippling both ships beyond repair;
the Ark made one final bridge jump, reappearing in the immediate vicinity of Earth in 1962, where it crashed violently onto Earth's Moon.
All the Autobots aboard perished save for Sentinel himself, who was in the crash vault and remained slumbering in stasis.
And that my friends is where we'll have to end this origin story.
I hope you enjoyed this history lesson because I did my best.
As I mentioned earlier I always that Sentinel was a compelling villain in the movie because his reasons were well warranted.
He wanted nothing more than to restore Cybertron before it was ultimately destroyed by war.
It's kinda sad because Optimus, the guy we rooted for aided in Cybertron's destruction.
Now granted I do have a couple hateful bones in my body for Sentinel.
I mean he did go about fulfilling his vision in a harsh way.
He didn't do fans any favors when he killed our beloved Ironhide in Dark of the Moon.
And siding with Megatron just seemed low even for a high class warrior like him.
But anyways what do you think of Sentinel's origin story?
Do you find it interesting?
Does it help you appreciate the expanded universe that the Bay films have presented?
Let me know in the comment section below.
As always I ask that you Like or Dislike the video.
It doesn't have to be a thumbs up it can be a thumbs down.
Any feedback is good feedback and will only help me improve on future content.
And also consider joining my Patreon, it's a good way of watching the content a week earlier before it goes public.
It helps this channel stay independent & self sustained.
But I think I've said enough.
Once again this was your boy RBG signing out on another video.
I'll catch you guys later. Peace out.
