Congrats on winning Alanganallur Jallikattu! Is your full name Ajith Kumar?
When did you decide to play Jallikattu?
Been doing it for 2 years. How can I not play this, being born in Alanganallur?
My inspiration, guru is M. Nagaraj
He taught me the nuances of the sport
And, we take it from there and practice with the bulls
Have you ever been afraid of the bulls, their sharp horns?
Afraid? Not at all! No point in having fear when you're in the arena
Between you and the bull, we believe there is God who is protecting us
How do you prepare for Jallikattu?
I take my bulls for walk daily; they take a nice dip
Then I go to a playground, and play Kabaddi. No other fancy workouts needed!
One or two days in a week, we train with the bulls
My trainer always asks me to look at the bull's eyes
How did your parents react when you said you want to play the sport?
Initially they didn't approve of it. I used to sneak out of home at night
Even prizes will not stop them from scolding me
"Why play this when you have education?", they'd ask
But all those things just go over my head
I've done automobile engineering
Oh! What prompted you to not go for a regular job?
I tried, but friends, bulls have taken a larger part of my life in the last 2 years
Any specific diet you take?
Nothing special. We take a vow not to eat meat one month prior to Jallikattu
How many bulls do you own? What do they eat?
We have 4. They have a special diet ahead of Jallikattu
And, their routine includes walking for 5 km
Once a week, they take to the waters
What differentiates Ajay from the rest?
Have faith in my abilities which gives me immense confidence
I believe I've mastered the art
When 60 guys are waiting to catch the bull, it is important to be next to the vadivasal
Have you injured your leg?
Got hurt while catching a bull in Palamedu
So you played in Alanganallur with this injury?!
Yes
How was your performance in Palamedu?
I caught one, and got injured while catching the second
Injury didn't stop from taking the field in my hometown of Alanganallur
Did it affect your confidence?
I wanted to catch only one bull
...but fate had other ideas. It wanted to me to win a car
You caught 8 bulls?
I wanted to catch only one, as a token of respect to hometown
They had announced an LED TV and a fridge as prizes for the catch
My confidence grew after the first catch
"Why can't we do it when people from other villages can?" asked my friend
Has the fear of injury ever stopped you from playing the sport?
Nope
I've won prizes in many districts...
...now, I just want to win a prize in my hometown
How do you tackle injuries? What is the medication like?
I had a couple of stitches there but it wasn't helping me
So yesterday, had it removed and undergoing treatment for it
Again?
Yeah, it's better now
Has your life changed after the win?
I'm a part of many more conversations now
I always have the backing of Alanganallur
The Collector's encouragement was a huge boost
My friends helped me as well
What role did friends play in your success?
We're always been together, even during the event
We coordinate among ourselves to catch the bulls
What's your favourite Jallikattu-based movie?
It is Karuppan (2017, Vijay Sethupathi-starrer)
Is this yours? The one standing behind us?
Yes. He's called 'Natpu'
What's the reason behind the name?
We've been friends and it's always friendly, and been a part of our family. So...
It's six years old now
We got it from Pudukottai
It has been groomed to participate in Jalliakttu?
It has participated in about 20 Jallikattu events
What kind of prizes has it won?
A lot, including some heavy utensils and gold coins
How many bulls have you caught in the last 2 years?
About 30
Which one of the 30 was the most difficult one to catch?
Nothing particular. I always want to catch the bull that wants to compete with us in the arena
Who is your inspiration, role model?
I'd say it is Malath Nagaraj
Does he also play the sport?
Yes, he's very much a part of it.
Also, Mettupatti Moorthy and his team *incoherent*. We all practice together
I want to emulate what they have done
Moorthi's achievements can be seen on YouTube as well
No one can take on the bulls and 'lock horns' with them like he does
Doesn't matter what kind of bull, he will tame it
"Why should we be afraid of an animal?" he will jokingly ask
So what next for Ajay?
I'm proud that I achieved the feat in my hometown. I will continue playing the sport
Design and destiny - both have to come together to help you win it
Tomorrow it might be my friend..our team will continue to bag more prizes
It was Sathya who won in Palamedu. I won here..
It's like that...
How does the crowd and cheering affect your game?
A huge effect! The chants encourage us to push ourselves to catch the bulls
It gives you great high!
Have your parents seen you catch a bull?
Nope!
They get a huge shock seeing the videos. I don't think they will watch it in real
During Suryan FM's live coverage, people from over 30 countries were talking about you
We had a lot of comments
A big thanks to all those people
They didn't know me but still wanted to appreciate.. a big thanks to them!
Also, to Suryan FM
