If you were not my daughter
I'm telling you
I would keep people like you at a distance
This is my first feature film
I am the writer/director/star
You know why you always get to scold me
Because you decide that I'm gonna screw up when I barely start
You don't have the patience
And you are terrified that anyone would succeed
It's called "Girls Always Happy"
Why do you have to force the facial expression you like on others' face
Your look upsets me as well, have I ever made you change
No
I never upset anyone
There has to be a bad guy between us
You are the bad guy
And I must be the good guy
The plot centers around a girl and her mother
Two insecure women
Sharing an exceedingly cramped apartment and torturing each other
There are two female leads
Wu is a middle-aged arty girl
A writer who lives in a small rented apartment in a hutong
Without guaranteed income
Her mother is a retired woman
Whose marriage and career are both disasters
We can say she is a complete failure
She couldn't stay under one roof with the elderlies in the family
That's why she moved to her daughter's apartment
They are extremely sensitive about their self-esteem
After being hurt repeatedly
"I'm not capable of writing any good stuff, I'm afraid"
"Don't talk about men to my face"
Malevolence from the other gender
And from neighbors
"Do you have any idea what those from hutong did to me?"
She is used to living in hostility with her mother
"No ugly mom in a son's eyes; no poor master in a dog's mind"
"You are worse than a dog"
When the torture becomes unbearable
They each start seeing someone
But both relationships end in failure
So they revert to mutual persecution
"I pity myself"
"You have gambled solely on me for all your life"
"Have you got any friend"
Actually both of them don't know how to be around another person
They are immature I guess
"Without any hint of love or softness, just plain statement"
"Not even the word mom"
"Son of a bitch"
They often clash in times of financial difficulty is expected
When Wu loses a guy to rely on
Her mother panics
Scenes of dinning are ubiquitous in the film
The dinning table
Is the only platform where they can communicate
"I met a freak today at the supermarket, I almost hit him"
"Me too"
The daughter receives profound influence from her mother
She grows up to become her mother
"This feels so nice"
"Are you buying?"
Zhang Xian could have changed her life
She breaks up with him
Because she doesn't believe that beauty can be real
"Is beauty bad"
"Beauty is not real enough"
She knows the dark side of life so well
That she instinctively repels beauty
This is the tragedy of the family
"Live to understand, how pathetic is that"
"What's wrong with you"
My film is free of saccharine
An honest portray of ordinary people is all
Maybe it has something to do with being born into a hutong
I am a very down-to-earth person
I lived in a single-parent family for a while
But my mother is a career woman
She didn't even want me at first
She thought I got in the way of her promotion
"You think your freedom just appears out of thin air?"
"I paid for it with my time!"
The English title is Girls Always Happy
While the girls in my movie aren't really
It's a bit ironic
My film is obviously feminine
A choice of instinct
But criticism of women also plays a part
Women's anxiety often times implodes
And the damage lasts for a life time
Through the life of a daughter and a mother
I actually intend to examine the interpersonal relationships
In modern Chinese society
