-I am so happy to have you.

-You set out to sort of tackle society's problems

in a very unique -- from your perspective.

-I was. -To teach people

who maybe had never been introduced to rap before

what it actually is. -Yeah.

You got to build bridges and not burn them.

And the fastest-growing age group is 65 and up.

You know? -Yeah.

-I'm -- I'm figuring, man,

those Sinatra fans need somebody to rock with.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

And did -- And it must -- I mean, you know, there --

What I like about the show

is there's a real warmth to the way you approach it all.

And it strikes me that, more often than not,

you're getting that warmth back. -Yeah.

I think that that's the way the world really works, right?

On Twitter, everyone's a superhero or supervillain

and they hate each other

and they get to yell at each other and scream.

These are the same people

who see each other at the grocery store and say,

"Excuse me. Could you pass me the milk?"

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-My -- My theory is, the more individual contact you have

with people who don't look like you,

who are not of your class

and not of your race, sex, or religion,

the greater the chances

of building friendships and empathy through that

and then taking that into the greater world.

So what I do -- [ Cheers and applause ]

-Mm. -[ Laughs ]

you know, people would call them a white nationalist.

I think he's just a poor white guy

who needs a club to belong to. -Yes.

for everyone to throw their perspective on one song.

Now, the ultimate -- what you -- what you hope is,

either everyone gets along

and builds interpersonal relationships

and a grander thing happens.

At worst, they're the worst group ever

and everyone hates them, and we're united by hate.

Very smart. -[ Laughing ] Yeah.

-So, you figured it out from both sides.

-Yeah. -You also talked about

how white gangs -- there's white gang privilege.

-There is white gang privilege, right?

-Explain that real quick.

-That means, if -- if I'm a Hells Angels member,

I have already incorporated myself

and I can sell merchandise, right?

If I'm a Crip or a Blood, I'm still illegal

and I can't sell Crip and Blood bandanas.

-Yeah. -I would I like to invoke

some type of white gang/black gang

mentorship program where... [ Laughter ]

-Yeah. -...where --

But I really did take four brothers --

Newny, Yayo, Murdo, and AC.

I took these four young men who are members

of a street fraternity that we know as the Crips --

which started as Community Revolution in Progress, right?

And I took these young men and said,

"Hey, let's try to start a legitimate business

and legitimize what you're doing."

One of them already has a legitimate business.

The guy Yayo has Cash Crop Clothing

that he already sells.

He already has some retail experience,

but he hadn't had the experience of getting a loan

and things of that nature.

So, the guys decided

to start a soda company... -Yeah.

-...because soda has killed far more people than any gang.

[ Laughter ] -And -- And there you go.

It's Crip Co-- Crip-a-- -Crip-a-Cola.

-Crip-a-Cola. [ Laughter ]

There you go. It takes the edge off it.

You -- You -- A lot of the show is challenging ideas we have...

-Yes, yeah. -...for people inside bubbles

or just things that --

even people outside of bubbles have --

although I would argue everybody's in a bubble.

-...you -- were you like this always?

Were you like this in school?

-I was always curious. I was always rebellious.

My oldest friend since kindergarten --

he saw the show, laughed hysterically,

looked at my pitiful life, and said,

"He's been like this this whole time."

[ Laughter ]

"There's no changing -- no chance of him changing."

You know what I mean?

I have always challenged the status quo.

I've always asked "Why?" and "Why not?"

And I always thought that made me special

until my 11-year-old did the same thing to me.

[ Laughter ] -Yeah, you got four kids, right?

-Yeah. Yeah. -You got four kids.

-Yeah. -And so, they're --

they're turning out to be just like you?

-And that's not a good thing. -Yeah.

[ Laughter ]

Well, now you know what your wife's like,

'cause you got to live with one of you now.

-Exactly. -Yeah. [ Laughs ]

-So, Malik, Aniyah, Pony Boy, Mikey, I love you guys.

-That's great. I'm glad to hear they're watching.

You were a supporter -- an early supporter of Bernie Sanders

in the last election. -Yeah.

Still a friend of his.

Where do you take him to lunch here?

-The OG. This is Busy Bee's.

I was gonna take Bernie to another restaurant,

and my wife, in classic Southern black wife speak said,

"You ain't taking that man to no white folks' restaurant."

[ Laughter ] "He wants the black vote,

you're gonna take him to a black restaurant."

So we went to Busy Bee's,

which was a restaurant my grandfather used to take me to,

and all of Atlanta goes there.

And I think he had baked chicken, I had fried chicken,

and we both had cornbread and greens.

-You also took him to a barber shop -- correct? --

but he did not get a haircut.

-Well, he rocks -- he rocks what we call the classic Bernie 'fro.

-Yeah. -So, you don't -- you don't --

you don't need the classic Bernie 'fro cut as much.

It's just comb forward a lot.

[ Laughter ] -Yeah.

Also, very exciting --

-"4." We're gonna --

-"4"? -Yeah.

-What -- Can you tell us anything about it?

-It's gonna feel like the most frigid of New York days

Claire Adam's Siblings Were Nervous About Her Novel - Duration: 6:36.

-Our next guest tonight is a very talented author

whose beautiful debut novel "Golden Child" is available now.

Please welcome to the show, Claire Adam, everyone.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Hi, Claire! Welcome!

-Oh, thank you so much for having me.

-This book is -- it's beautiful.

It is -- There are parts of it that are very exciting.

It is haunting.

It takes place in Trinidad. You are from there.

-Yes.

-I've heard you say that it is inspired a bit by,

obviously, your upbringing there. How so?

-Yeah, I mean, it sort of overlaps just a little bit

with my family stories.

So, I was born in Trinidad.

And I lived there until I was 18.

I was the youngest of four kids.

And so, when I was growing up there,

it was sort of during the '80s and '90s.

And we were having a recession in Trinidad at the time.

So a lot of people were trying to emigrate.

So, amongst my family, we were all quite smart, quite academic.

So, like, I guess my parents sort of had this idea for us

that we would all go to universities in North America.

And so, yeah, we just had to work very hard and study

and get into these great schools and hopefully get scholarships.

-Education does serve as sort of the escape

for these children in this book. -Yeah.

-And it also is a sort of oppressive idea of, like,

having to succeed enough to achieve that escape.

How did your -- your mother is Irish?

-That's right.

-And your father is from Trinidad.

How did they meet?

-Yeah, so, they were both doctors.

My mom had come from Ireland and my dad from Trinidad.

And they were both working in a hospital together.

I think it was in Nottingham.

And so, in the doctors mess room, they were playing cards.

Like, I don't know if they're looking after patients or what.

So, I think romance happens in these places.

-How do they feel about having --

two doctors having a writer for a daughter?

-Yeah, I think they're quite excited.

Like, we all kind of did science.

So, I did science originally. I did physics.

And my siblings all did science as well.

Yeah, so, I did the physics at college and then, you know,

physics was very hard.

And I had always sort of had this idea of writing as well.

So, after I finished college,

you know, I thought, "Okay, I think now is my time."

-And your siblings -- is it true your siblings were nervous

when they heard you were writing a book?

-Well, a little bit, because they knew it was set in Trinidad

and they knew it was about these, you know,

kids who have to work very hard and they're sort of looking for

their ticket out and the scholarship,

and each of them were like, "Is it about me?"

And I was like, "No, no. It's gonna be okay."

And they were like, "Oh, my gosh."

And so actually, I didn't let them read it

until I was kind of -- until I sort of had the --

-It was too late. -Exactly.

[ Laughter ]

You're like, "Sorry, it already came back from the printer.

What are you gonna do?"

-Yeah, that's right.

-And you ended up going to Brown.

And you said you were the youngest.

And your parents were a little over the idea

of moving their kids into dorms?

-Yeah, well, so it was -- I mean, I was the youngest.

You know, my mom went with my brother and dropped him off

at college, and this is, like, a flight from Trinidad,

so it's a whole big deal, and then she went with my sister

and then she went with my other sister.

And then when it came time for me, she was like,

"Just go. You can handle it." [ Laughter ]

So, yeah. Actually, one of my older sisters took me along

and kind of dropped me -- "Okay, there's where you kind of

go to the bank and that's where you put in some paperwork.

Okay, see ya."

-Coming from Trinidad to Rhode Island,

I imagine first time you saw snow?

-That's right, yeah.

You know, in Trinidad, obviously,

we're a tropical island.

You know, our temperatures are like 30 degrees Celsius,

whatever that is in Fahrenheit.

So you know, I had never seen snow before.

And, so, yeah, that was one of the really exciting things.

I think it was -- I suppose it would've been

November or December the time it first happened.

But yeah, I made friends with a couple of people

from the tropics and when it first started to snow,

we all went out in our pajamas and did, like, our snow day.

We're, like, taking pictures. [ Laughter ]

So, yeah. So it was good fun.

-I'm sure most of the people in Providence, Rhode Island,

was like, "Who are these lunatics?"

-I know. [ Laughter ]

But for us it was exciting.

-Sarah Jessica Parker has been on the show

talking about she has her own imprint with Hogarth,

which is the publisher,

and you guys had been doing a lot of press together.

And I heard that the part that makes me nervous

is not being around her.

What's the worst part?

-Well, she is just so warm and lovely.

-Yes. The best. -She is lovely.

But, you know, she is a very stylish and fashionable lady.

And you know, us writers, we don't get out very much.

[ Laughter ]

I wear, like, my pajamas. Coffee stains.

I'm like, "Oh, my God."

So, you know, I sort of did quite a lot of shopping

before I came on this trip.

I mean, this is my best effort, guys.

[ Laughter and applause ]

-There's a real balance in this book.

Reading it, there was part of me that wanted to go to Trinidad.

You obviously write about how beautiful it is.

But it also -- you know, as you mentioned,

this takes place in a really fraught time.

There is this threat of violence that hangs over the book.

Is that a thing that is hard to balance when you're writing?

Or does it just come naturally because you were there?

-Yeah. I mean, you know, when I --

I had a perfectly easygoing childhood.

We kept our doors unlocked and like, you know,

people moved around very freely.

But it is one of the features of life in Trinidad.

I mean, people work

and they go to school and they do everything normally.

But yet there is this sort of, you know, quite violent crime

that sort of happens side by side with everyday life.

So, yes.

I mean, I guess when I was writing,

I was trying hard not to sort of sensationalize it.

I didn't want it to be like, this is some kind of war zone.

It's not a war zone.

You know, it's one of these things

that people have to deal with in their everyday lives.

-I'm always interested about this part of the process

because this is a book that as it races to its conclusion,

as a reader, I was very much, you know,

turning each page wondering what was going to happen.

Did you -- when you set out,

did you know what was going to happen?

Did you know how your book was gonna conclude?

-I mean, I did know some of the big brush strokes.

Like, I sort of new the big ending.

But lots of things I had to work out along the way.

Like, I knew the father, Clyde, very well.

I had a very clear picture of him.

But all the other characters

I had to sort of write to discover.

Like Paul -- So, there's twin boys.

There's Peter and Paul, and Paul is the one

who is less sort of recognized by his father

and, you know, perhaps not his father's favorite.

And so Clyde sort of overlooks him.

And I think I kind of overlooked him too when I was writing.

So he was the one who kind of came last when I was writing.

-Well, I'm happy to say, you definitely figured it out.

And I really enjoyed the book.

U.S. House proposes bill to stall U.S. pullout from S. Korea - Duration: 2:44.

Anticipation builds as we are expecting a summit between Pyeongyang and Washington to

take place next month.

Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives proposed a bill.... to send a message to North

Korean leader Kim Jong-un before his next summit with President Trump.

Park Ji-won gets us up to speed with the developments.

A bipartisan group of eight U.S. lawmakers proposed a bill on Wednesday... aiming to

preemptively stop the Trump administration from withdrawing U.S. forces from South Korea.

The bill, titled the "United States and Republic of Korea Alliance Support Act," lays out stricter

conditions that would have to be met to justify a withdrawal,.. something that could tip the

balance of power in Northeast Asia.

The bill says... if the administration decides to reduce the number of U.S. troops to below

22-thousand,... the secretary of defense must report to both the House and the Senate the

expected impact on North Korea,.... as well as the expected military and economic impacts

on U.S. relations with both South Korea and Japan.

The bill also requires the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

to jointly certify... to the relevant congressional committees... that South Korea is fully capable

of defending itself and of deterring any military conflict on the Peninsula... that would threaten

U.S. interests.

The lawmakers apparently made the decision in view of the next summit between the North

Korean and American leaders... tentatively scheduled for next month.

"We think it's important to establish before the next meeting between President Trump and

Kim Jong-un that the United States is not about to leave South Korea at least not before

there's transformational progress on the Korean Peninsula.

Our presence there has prevented war for more than 60 years.

It would be reckless we think to abandon this commitment on the basis of paper promises

from the North Koreans while they continue to threaten the region with both nuclear and

conventional weapons."

The bill was announced a day after a top U.S. intelligence official testified to Congress

that North Korea's complete denuclearization seems unlikely.

President Trump has already signed a similar defense act restricting any U.S. pullout from

South Korea.

That bill,.. signed last August as part of the defense budget,... restricts the use of

the fund to reduce the number of U.S. forces in South Korea below 22-thousand,... unless

the secretary of defense certifies that such moves are in line with U.S. interests.

This week's new bill would tighten those rules.

Int'l media report on life of late sex slavery victim and activist Kim Bok-dong - Duration: 1:42.

Kim Bok-dong, a survivor of Japan's wartime sex slavery fought for human rights and demanding

reparation from Tokyo untill she passed away.

News of her death on Monday resonated around the world, with various media outlets honoring

her courage and dedication bringing justice to victims like her.

Park Hee-jun reports.

The death of 93-year-old Kim Bok-dong, a victim of sexual slavery by Japan during World War

II and later a human rights activist,... is also getting attention from outside the country.

New York Times wrote that Kim had been a "prominent representative" of comfort women since the

early 1990s,... and described her as "one of the most outspoken, persistent campaigners"

who helped bring international attention to the issue of wartime sexual slavery.

The AP and the Japanese daily The Mainichi chronicled her life devoted to justice.

They said Kim traveled around the world and participated in weekly demonstrations demanding

a sincere apology and compensation from the Japanese government.

Reuters and Channel NewsAsia also covered the story,... with headlines using Kim's parting

words to her fellow activists -- "fight until the end."

American broadcaster NBC also reported Kim's death.

The executive director of the Korean American Forum of California told NBC that by remembering

Kim's courage,... "women are empowered" and activists are a step closer to achieving justice.

Julie Tang, a former San Francisco judge and co-chair of the Comfort Women Justice Coalition,...

said Kim was a "legendary historical figure."

According to NBC, both groups will hold memorials in California on Sunday... to show solidarity

in the fight to bring justice to the comfort women.

I will highlight my outer eyebrow sorry my outer eye and the inner corner of my

eye with the lightest shade available in the palette which is this one I will

take actually the smallest brush or my finger anything will do and I will

highlight

so you don't have to cross there you just have to highlight this area or you

can use your finger for my inner corner of eye I'm using my finger because I

really want this area to be highlighted

and it's actually easy to apply my finger you can use the brush both are

okay you know in this way okay so after highlighting my inner corner or my

outer corner of my eye what I will do I will actually do the contouring and I

will use this shade for the contouring this will work as a transition plus

contouring shade the technique is same I don't have to close your eyes not

close your eyes half open your eyes and do the contouring or either you can if

you know your crease then you can simply do in this way like I am doing or you

can simply open your eyes and do it so let's do it

this time I'm dragging it around my whole eye because this look is different

than the look that I have created before I am also applying to the side of my eye

I I will do the same procedure nothing is different for both I what of my eyes

they have equal eyes shadow and I will blend it because we want blendding the

shade that I will use now is the shade and I will apply it on my lips you can

use your fingers

after applying on my both of my eyes and the transition shade and the shade which

is which is on my lid I haven't tried to blend the this lid shade it into my

transition shade and it's not that the because it's so easy you just have to

move a brush and it will just get blended you don't have to do much these

both of these shades together and I will apply under my eye

and I'm using liquid eyeliner which is the most difficult one and I'm using

this stamp one I need I have to stamp my outer corner first and then I will apply

the liquid liner and it has to go in this way

see so I have a stamp to my both of my eyes and now I will fill it with the

smaller one

so I don't want the dramatic look on my eye so I'm not doing more let me do it

off the camera so I have applied the liquid eyeliner on both of my eyes and

then I will check it by rolling down my eyes and it's a bit thicker here and a

bit thinner here so I will equal it and rest is okay because your both eyes

they are never equal what additional thing I will do I will take my pencil

which is by makeup forever and I will fill my eyes in this way my eyelashes

will look more filler and even if I don't apply any fake eyelashes it will

still look so dark here and so thick so this I struggle

and the second thing I will do I will take my another pencil which is brown

pencil you can also take the brown eyeshadow either or you can leave it as

it is you don't have to do this step but I really think that I shall do it and

it's not something that I'm doing so harsh

all I want I don't want my lower eyelashes look dull and my upper

eyelashes look so prominent it does not look nice

Political wrangling intensifies over governor's prison sentence - Duration: 2:11.

The divide between political parties widens, following the sentencing of Gyeongsangnam-do

Province governor Kim Kyoung-soo.

The democratic party launched a committee that will look into the ruling to see if there

are any contradictions,... while the main opposition carried out a protest infront of

the presidential office.

Kim Min-ji has the latest.

Wrangling between the parties has intensified after the sentencing of Gyeongsangnam-do Province

Governor Kim Kyoung-soo.

The ruling Democratic Party, with which Kim is affiliated, launched a special committee

on Thursday to deal with the aftermath.

The party said the ruling was retaliation... for efforts by the ruling party and the government

to reform a judiciary plagued by influence peddling.

"We will work with lawyers to thoroughly analyze the ruling and see if there are any contradictions,...

and will also continue to push to reform the judicial branch to curb the abuse of power."

Kim was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison for allegedly colluding with a blogger

to manipulate the number of likes on online comments to benefit the Democratic Party ahead

of the 2017 presidential election.

Kim had been considered a strong possible candidate for the presidency -- and was a

close aide to President Moon Jae-in, having served as his spokesperson during his presidential

campaign.

As widely expected, the conservative opposition is stepping up its offensive.

The Liberty Korea Party held a protest in front of the presidential office,... claiming

that someone higher up must have known about the online influence campaign, and asking

Heavy snow alerts, cold snap expected in the morning _ 013119 - Duration: 1:38.

Hello I'm Michelle Park here with the weather update.

It's snowing in the southern region, with some locations currently under heavy snow

alerts.

The weather conditions have forced some roads and schools in the area to be closed.

The precipitation should start to lift from the west coast,... while Gangwon-do Province

will receive it throughout the night.

Northeast Asian countries will be influenced by a high-pressure front tomorrow, so we'll

get a good amount of sun, while daily highs will rise to up to 7 degrees Celsius.

Until then, a cold front is underway bringing down Seoul to minus 7 degrees Celsius, while

Daegu and Gyeongju are lower at minus 8 degrees.

Seoul will rise to 3 degrees in the afternoon, Busan to 6 and Jeju Island at 7 degrees.

Temperatures will bounce back by the afternoon,... and it's expected to be milder by the weekend.
