Hi everyone! My name is Frede and today, I'm gonna be doing the Clean Slate Book Tag
which I was tagged in by Hélène at booksbyleynes and it was originally created by Catalyst Reads,
I'm gonna be leaving the original video as well as Hélène's video down below.
I have actually already filmed this book tag.
I think I filmed it like two or three weeks ago but I didn't like it at all when I was editing it like yesterday
because I had no time. So I'm just going to re-film it.
So yeah, it's actually kind of a beginning of the year tag but we're still in January,
so I'm gonna try to edit this today and then it should be okay.
So let's just get into the questions.
The first question is are there any genres that you're going to read more or less of in 2018?
I don't think there is anything that I want to read less but I do- I would like to read more poetry,
I read a couple of poetry collections last year and I really enjoyed them and I would like to kind of
I don't know, read some more poetry, see what else is out there.
Because that's kind of the genre that I'm still most intimidated by.
Question number two is: are there any books you have recently read that changed or challenged
some of your philosophies and beliefs?
The closest I can get to this, and this is not really something- I didn't read this recently,
I read this in June last year and it also didn't like challenge anything that I was like conviced of before,
but I took something away from it that was just kind of a perspective that I don't think I really had before,
or at least not in that way. And that is The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
What I really took away from this book I think is kind of not being so defensive when you hear something
that you kind of feel personally attacked by but not everything is about you kind of.
And that's something a lot of people do just like whenever someone says something, just a general
statement you think they are talking exactly about you.
But I think in this case with this autobiography and the way that Malcolm talks about his experiences with racism
like he doesn't sugarcoat it, it's very easy and I think that that's something that a lot of I guess well-meaning
white people do is like "oh but I'm not like that."
And I think because this is on the one hand such a long book, I think it's like 500- almost 500 pages,
and because for the majority of this book he has these very radical opinions and as I said doesn't sugarcoat it,
he's very unapologetic about his anger, I think it just kind of forces you to step- like to take a step back
and to think okay why am I feeling so defensive right now? Why can't I just listen to this person who is
talking about these terrible experiences and why can't I try to think about what position I play in this?
Even if I don't actively do anything racist, still as a white person you benefit from the system that we're in.
So I think this is really the main takeaway from this, kind of- I mean this is still something I need to work on [laughs]
But kind of just really trying to when someone says something that might be very generalising,
not immediately becoming so defensive. That was something I think I was kind of aware of before
but not that much. And now I think now that I've got this awareness of
"hm I might get a bit defensive in some situations" I think it's also helping me to work on that.
I think. So that's my answer for this question.
Question number three is who would you recommend for a newbie to watch?
Ohh there are so many people that I love watching.
I think obviously, I was tagged by Hélène and I love her videos,
so in case you watch my videos but you don't watch hers, you need to watch her videos.
They are so good. She is so passionate about literature, she really- she also doesn't sugarcoat her opinions
which I really love because there are so many people on this platform who are like
"so I didn't really like this book, but that doesn't mean that it's bad if you like this book"
so I really appreciate having someone who's like "this book was shit.
And I don't give a shit what you think about it but I thought it was shit."
Like I really, really appreciate that. So I would definitely say Hélène.
I also really enjoy watching Jennifer at Insert Literary Pun Here.
Her videos are so well thought through and her- she is so eloquent, I wish I could speak like her.
And just- I really love watching her videos so I would also recommend her.
And then- ugh there are so many people that I love,
but if you're new to this platform I would also recommend trying to find some smaller channels,
like Hélène and Jennifer both- I would still call them smaller channels but I would recommend
also trying to find people who are completely new. Just like try and look for the newbie tag,
because so many people are doing that tag. And just try to find people who are also like
only now getting into booktubing, because I think that's also a nice thing.
So I would recommend kind of a balance between some people who might be a bit bigger channels
if you love them but also trying to find some that don't have that much of a follower base I guess.
So yeah, I guess a variety of people, try and find that. That's what I would say for that question.
Question number four: Do you have a reading book bucket list?
Not really [laughs] I mean there are a lot of books that I would love to read but really a bucket list,
I don't think so.
Question number five: what is it about booktube that has surprised you the most?
I think I'm gonna go with what most people would say here
which is like the kindness and the genuine community.
Because that's not something that I've really seen online in that way.
Like I've got my kind of group of online friends who I've known for like years,
but we all kind of like different things and we just talk because we've been talking for so long.
Because back in the day we would like bond over the same bands that we used to like or something.
But apart from that, I've never really seen that many people really be so kind to each other
and just for the sake of talking about something that you really like
and not for the sake of "I want to become internet famous."
Because I think in other communities very often you also see kind of communities
and people being nice to each other,
but very often I think it's like "hi, I like this post. Do you want to follow me?" Like, it's-
I don't know. I think really the genuine being nice to each other and the genuine community, that was something
that I was not expecting [laughs]
Question number six is: What are some of your goals? Doesn't have to be just related to booktube.
When I filmed this video two or three weeks ago, I said, like answering this question,
I said I would like to be able to maintain a consistent filming and uploading schedule,
and we are now at the end of January and that hasn't really worked.
So I would like to get back to that, to really be able to film and upload consistently,
which I'm not quite sure how that's going to work because I would also like to graduate this year [laughs]
So we'll see. I would also like to actually continue with my Les Misérables series this year,
because I did one video for that last year and then just had no time whatsoever to read this book.
So I hope that once the semester is over and I'm done with like uni reading,
I will able to get back with that. So I guess that's just kind of the main thing but I would also like to be able to
communicate better with the community. Because especially lately, I have not been watching a lot,
and I have especially not been like engaging a lot with the community. So that's something I would also like to
do this year.
Question number seven is: if you could meet any writer, artist, or musician, dead or alive, who would they be?
I think for me that would be Audre Lorde. I would really love to have met her.
So I don't know, I read a lot by her last year and I just really think she was such a remarkable person
and just a person I would really love to have had a conversation with.
So obviously she's dead so that's not going to be a thing but I really, really appreciate her work
so I would have loved to meet her.
Question number eight is: would you rather have your life written by your favourite author
or be portrayed in a movie by your favourite actor or actress?
Neither [laughs]
So I don't really have like one specific favourite author,
but I think one of the people I've read most by is Stephen King.
And I wouldn't really like for Stephen King to write about my life
because he would probably make a horror story out of it and like [laughs] nah.
Like you could probably write a overdramatic and clichéd YA novel about like my life so far,
but we've got enough books of that, so that's not really something that I would like.
And then I don't really have a favourite actor. So neither for that one.
Question number nine is: what are some of the challenges you have had to overcome or would still
like to improve upon in regards to your channel?
Well I think consistency is the main thing in this.
So in summer, last summer in like August and September
I was really good at uploading like really regularly,
and just doing a lot and then uni started again and I just had no time.
So I guess that's kind of the main thing.
Because obviously, filming takes a lot of time, editing, uploading, also my videos all have closed captions
so that also takes a lot of time. Yeah so I guess that's the biggest challenge and that's something-
I think I need to be a bit more structured in my daily life in order to be able to do that.
Also- yeah. Yeah so I guess that's that.
Question number ten is: what advice would you give to someone that is thinking about
deleting their booktube channel?
I don't know, like obviously you would have different reasons for wanting to do that,
but I think I would just recommend just taking a break for a while,
doing whatever you need to do which would be the reason why you would delete the channel
in the first place. And then just see whether you miss it, whether you feel like go back to doing it
or not, and then, I don't know.
I think if it's really something you don't wanna do anymore then just don't.
Because obviously forcing yourself to do something that you don't enjoy anymore
is not really a good thing to do to yourself.
But you could also just try to do things differently and see if that works out.
And then I guess at the end of the day the decision is still up to you,
so yeah. I'm not good at giving advice, but that's my advice I guess [laughs]
So these were the ten questions of the Clean Slate Book Tag.
I'm going to tag Jessica and Christeena at GameofTomes.
In case you still want to do this although it's like- we're not really at the beginning of the year anymore,
but it case you still wanna do this, I would love to see your answers to these questions.
So yeah, thank you for watching this video and I will see you in my next one
which will hopefully be not in like three weeks again [laughs]
