Making Better Videos! | Improving Accessibility - Duration: 10:01.

Hello, I had thoughts that maybe this morning we would go out into the garden

and get some stuff done, but it's raining and you can probably hear the rain on

the roof, it is quite loud. Not only is it raining, it's really windy and

we've got sideways rain. It's not coming down at an angle, it's just

blowing sideways. It's a little bit fierce. But that's not going to put a

damper on my mood because last week Joe and Becky over at White House on the Hill

asked for nominations for people's Best Small Homestead Channels. And thank you

- thank you to everybody who nominated my channel. That was really nice,

thank you. says she's with a little bit of embarrassment.

Anyway, White House on the Hill put out their video overnight,

well, overnight for here! And really nicely they have included my youtube

channel on their list of best small homestead channels on youtube.

So if you haven't come across White House on the Hill, go check them out, there's a link

up there. And on that video there is a list of, it's not just ten

more like 18 homestead channels that get a shout out. They are fantastic! If

there are any there that you haven't seen before, I really really recommend

that you go and have a look because all the channels are really different,

they're doing different stuff, they present things in different ways and

there are just some lovely, lovely channels there. I need to get out or for

some of these wet things. I've just just let the birds out and they're not

impressed

Look how wet this is! They're not impressed, at all that rain and I'm

not either. But the thing about the rain is that it makes our gardens grow really

well and and we'll need that water in the ground, later in the year.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to keep telling myself!

That's better, I've changed out of all those wet to clothes.

Now Wales is renowned for being wet and windy,

mostly for being wet, but that also means that we have the most beautiful, green

and lush surroundings. I thought today I would talk to you a little bit about

some of the things I am doing to to improve my vlogs and to improve

people's access to them. So I know, let me go back a little bit. A few weeks

ago on Twitter, I noticed somebody's post about adding captions to your

photographs, which means that people who are blind still get an idea of what the

pictures about. So if they have the right piece of kit or equipment on their phone

or their laptop or whatever it is that they're using, not only does it read out

the tweet but it reads out a description of the picture. And if you're

on Twitter you can switch this on very easily by going to the accessibility

section. And then when you upload a photograph to Twitter, a little box comes

up that you can just put a description of what is in the picture. I

make my descriptions really simple, so for this picture I say something like

'looking across a vegetable garden towards a farmhouse and barn' because it

doesn't need to be more than that, it doesn't need to be more extravagant or

ornate. There will be an understanding then of vaguely what the picture is

that's accompanying the post. Which is why on Twitter if you see

my posts, very often I'll put up a new vlog and a bit about it,

the link to it . And then underneath there is just a large photograph rather than

an embedded video because that large photograph gives me a chance to then

write a description of what's in the photograph. And it just enhances the

tweets and makes it more accessible to people with with any kind of visual

impairment. And along the same lines for my vlogs, I have been looking at how I

can make those more accessible for people who are either not going to

be able to either see them very well or more importantly, for people who are not

going to be able to hear them. And so over the last week or two, I have started

putting subtitles on my vlogs. I'm very slowly working my way back through

older vlogs and adding subtitles to those. Now it's not... there is just a

button you can click and YouTube's own subtitle service puts your subtitles,

it put subtitles on there, but it doesn't necessarily

understand everything I'm saying and because I say err and um quite a lot while I'm

thinking, um, there we go, an um - it will put these really odd words in the subtitles. So I

am having to go back through each one at a time and very carefully check that all

the subtitle words are correct. The other day at the end of the vlog I said I'm

going to go in and get warm and dry and the subtitle have changed it to I'm

going to go in and get warm and die! So I do have to check them all, but bit by bit

those are coming and you'll see that now some of my vlogs have got a little

label and it's saying subtitles. And those are the vlogs that I've already

put the subtitles on. My sister and brother-in-law called round this morning,

to buys some eggs and she brought me some chocolate covered

rice cakes. How nice is that? Now I used to hate rice cakes and wasn't

terribly partial to gluten-free chocolate either, but since I have been

without gluten these have become, not quite my new best friend,

but I certainly like them a lot. So for the rest of today, I'm going to, well, I'm

going to stay inside and do her things in here. I'm going to carry on with my

patchwork quilt that I'm making, and if you missed my vlog about that, there's a link.

And I'm just going to carry on staying warm and dry. So patchwork quilt and

doing some more subtitles on older vlogs. And actually, if there is

a vlog in particular, that you would like to be subtitled, please just leave a

comment below or below any of my vlogsI will pick it up and I will get that

one subtitled as soon as I can.

And just when I thought I was going to stay in

for the day, I remembered I still got chickens to sort out. So just going

to give them a bit of corn before bedtime and I'm gonna get back inside and get warm

again before I have to come back out and put them to bed!

The wind has been really fierce, it has blown over one of the chicken houses.

Luckily there was no one living in it!

But you can see it's snapped the wood and ripped it away here. And while the

wind is this fierce I'm not even going to try and stand that up straight and

fix it. I'll wait until the weekend when Mr. Jay is home and hopefully

the weather will have calmed down a bit. We'll get it fixed and move it.

And so, wherever you are in the world and whatever you're up to today, I hope

you stay warm and dry and I also hope you can join me again tomorrow.

Over the last 24 hours, the country has been plunged into chaos after the government shutdown.

Well, that is what the Democrats would love for you to believe but lo and behold everything

is working just fine and will continue to despite the hysteria the mainstream media

has pushed.

In fact, the majority of Americans will not notice a thing gone awry since only non-essential

government workers were affected by this liberal grandstanding for illegal immigrants.

However, that was not the case back in 2013 when Barack Obama threw his temper tantrum

by refusing to negotiate with Republicans on how to fund the government.

Instead, Obama shut the government down but not before he realized that when he did no

one would really notice his dramatic gesture and things would continue to work despite

their absence.

So, Obama decided with his flair for dramatic, ramped up the theatrics by closing down the

national parks which included the World War II Memorial in Washington.

Even during the shutdown of 2013, the House Committee on Natural Resources noted that

"the Obama Administration is going out of its way to take unreasonable and unnecessary

steps to block public access to parks and monuments that aren't warranted by a government

shutdown."

"For example, open-air parks and national monuments, places without doors or gates,

where people are allowed to visit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, have been barricaded

off," the committee added.

"In addition, none of these D.C. memorials were closed during the last government shutdown

in 1995-1996 under the Clinton Administration.

The Obama Administration's closing of these sites is not something they are required to

do; it's something they are CHOOSING to do.

The Obama Administration wants the effects of this government shutdown to be as painful

as possible."

However, that was then, and this is now, and here we are in the midst of another government

shutdown, but something is very different.

Instead of crying and making a public scene President Trump is allowing this absurd liberal

hissy fit to run its course leaving the theatrics out of it which many government workers and

tourists noticed today.

Just one day into the shutdown Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke went to work cleaning up trash

on the National Mall and speaking to school children with a smile on Sunday morning.

Nope, Zinke was not out of a job or turning people away from the memorials but doing what

he does every day.

"Absolutely not.

We're passing out brochures until we run out of brochures.

I'll be out here every day."

Zinke and much of the federal government has had the vast majority of staff furloughed

due to the government shutdown.

The shutdown happened on Friday when Democrats refused to vote for a GOP budget bill that

kept the government funded.

A shutdown means all "non-essential" government workers get furloughed and the rest go without

pay until Congress can pass a funding bill.

The last government shutdown was in 2013 under the Obama administration.

For that shutdown, the Department of Interior made the controversial decision to close public

parks, monuments, and battlefields.

The decision led to some comical and ultimately sad stories of children having their D.C.

school trips canceled and veterans not being able to visit monuments built in their honor.

However, if you were looking for similar headlines under the Trump administration, keep looking.

In the first hours of the government shutdown Secretary Zinke was making plans for how to

keep America's public parks open.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Zinke met with public affairs and maintenance staff

to run through a plan to keep memorials on the National Mall open.

He then spoke with garbagemen who will be picking up trash on the Mall one last time

before the city of D.C. takes over for them.

Zinke then got into his car and drove to the WWII memorial to greet visitors and hand out

maps and helped with directions.

"I spent the morning walking around, giving brochures out," Zinke said.

"I got a lot of thanks from both sides of the aisle.

We will not weaponize our public lands."

"The visitor experience will be diminished," Zinke admitted, noting that some museums and

public service will take a hit during the shutdown.

"But to the degree possible, we will keep our public lands open.

They should not be used as a political weapon."

Zinke said public parks, monuments, and the battlefields "belong to the people and not

the government," and noted that people will see a "significant difference" between

the Trump administration and Obama's in the way public lands are managed during a

shutdown.

Now, of course, this government shutdown is unnecessary, but since it happened, it is

great to see the vast difference between Obama and Trump's leadership.

Obama chose to make the American people hurt every chance he got, while Trump is in the

business of protecting the American people and our culture.

Hopefully, this ridiculous government shutdown will end, and we can get back to work on making

America great again, but with the left who knows how long they will draw this out.

Although California�s deluge of complex taxes have already provoked many sensible

business owners into relocating elsewhere, the additional taxes proposed by the state�s

leftist legislators in response to President Donald Trump�s tax reform bill is apt to

only worsen the ongoing exodus.

Two California legislators in particular seek to impose a tax surcharge on every California

business that earns more than $1 million per year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle,

so that any money businesses save from Trump�s tax bill can effectively be redistributed

to the poor.

�Trump�s tax reform plan was nothing more than a middle-class tax increase.

It is unconscionable to force working families to pay the price for tax breaks and loopholes

benefiting corporations and wealthy individuals,� said state lawmaker Phil Ting in a statement.

This bill will help blunt the impact of the federal tax plan on everyday Californians

by protecting funding for education, affordable health care, and other core priorities,�

he added.

Ting and fellow lawmaker Kevin McCarty�s bill, Assembly Constitutional Amendment 22,

would specifically add a 10 percent surcharge of earnings above $1 million and produce an

estimated $17 billion in added revenue per year, as reported by The Fresno Bee.

That money would then be funneled �to low-income workers in the form of an expanded earned

income tax credit, tax rebates or other tax relief to be determined.�

It would also be used to fund �state-funded child care, early childhood education, affordable

health care and college financial aid.�

The money would basically be used to prop up California�s already immensely bloated

welfare system.

Great.

There�s just one glaring problem: who would be around to pay the tax?

Businesses have been fleeing California in droves for years now because of the state�s

outrageous taxes, including Toyota, Occidental Petroleum and even Nestl� USA, which announced

plans to relocate its U.S. headquarters from California to Virginia last year.

Investors Business Daily contributor Terry Jones pointed out at the time that �(a)s

many companies have found, California is an awful place to do business.�

�The $26-billion-a-year food conglomerate is discreet, of course, about its reasons,

citing a desire to be closer to its core customers and other bland corporate pabulum,� he wrote.

�But the fact is, Nestle and its corporate brethren in California that actually make

things are overtaxed and overregulated.�

And apparently, Ting and McCarty want to overtax and overregulate California�s businesses

even more.

Wonderful.

The only saving grace for California business owners is that Ting and McCarty�s bill �has

no chance of winning the necessary two-thirds vote in the Legislature needed to place it

on the ballot,� according to the Bee.

Good.

As it stands, California already hosts a stunningly high 8.84 percent corporate tax rate, making

it among the highest in the nation.

Its sales tax, property tax and income tax rates are just as bad.

If anything, California desperately needs to reduce its tax rates, but God forbid its

harebrained leftist legislators ever figure this out.

But today I'm going to do this video in

English for you guys for two reasons.

For one, I want you guys to get some listening practice which means listening to how I speak

English, how I form and pronounce words and sentences. And secondly I really just

want to have a little "pow-wow" with you guys about an important topic which I

think people don't really talk enough about in the English learning community.

By the way, "Pow-wow" is a ...

(...Russian...) So let's talk about whether or not you should learn English

with a native speaker? I see all the time in real life and on the internet where

somebody who's wanting to learn English but doesn't speak a word of English

wants to learn specifically with a native English speaker and that's kind

of frustrating to see. I mean how are you going to understand anything that your

teacher is explaining or saying to you if they don't speak your language and

can't explain it to you in your language? Trust me you're probably not going to

understand much of it at all. I had Russian teachers in the beginning when I

was learning Russian who didn't speak a word of English and it was absolutely

brutal. So if you're an adult and you're still at a beginner level or you're just

starting out so like an A1 or A2 English then I highly recommend that you get a

Russian teacher to learn English with. I know so many Russian teachers who teach

English and could explain English grammar way better than I ever could.

And the reason for why that is is because when you study a language as a second or a

foreign language you tend to study all the grammar piece by piece and you

really get a good grasp of all the rules and the exceptions and why things are

said the way that they are. Seriously I've actually tried explaining

to several Russians your very own case system and usually I get a response like:

until five to six years ago when I started teaching English seriously I

never would have been able to explain to you the difference between Present

Perfect and Present Continuous - most native English speakers wouldn't be able

to tell you that. My point is guys when you're at a beginner level you don't

need a native English speaker to study with. Find a Russian who can explain

English grammar to you ten times better than I ever could. So then at what level

does it make sense to study English with a native speaker? In my opinion it's at

the end of B1 because at the end of B1 as you move into B2 your focus

starts to shift towards more informal and spoken expressions and sentence

constructions. It's also around that point that you're going to be able to

speak English well enough to have actual conversations with a native speaker like

myself without ever needing to use Russian and as you move higher into B2

and eventually into C1 you'll find that your focus, your actual objective shifts

into speaking and sounding more like a native speaker. This means choosing more

informal sentence structures, incorporating more slang and idioms and

expressions into your speech. There's two major benefits to studying with a native

speaker once you reach this more advanced level. It's no secret that by

listening to how we pronounce things will definitely help you improve your

own pronunciation in English. And really, pronunciation at this level does

become a huge hurdle or obstacle to pushing your English into sounding more

like a native speaker. The second benefit is that you'll learn to mimic and copy

the word choices and sentence structures that we use.

So as I said before your goal at this level becomes more to speak not just

grammatically correct but to speak more like a native speaker and the best way

to do that is to mimic copy and repeat what we say and how we say it. By copying

our pronunciation and copying our word choice you're really going to boost your

english from grammatically correct textbook English to a level that better

reflects native speech. So just to recap my opinion for you guys

here on whether or not I think it's worth it to study English with a native

speaker the answer in short is if you're at a beginner level then I don't think that

it is I think that it's better for you to find one of the incredible

well-educated Russian teachers who can explain grammar to you better than any

of us ever could. But as you move into the B and the C levels you'll start to

notice that your goals will change and native speakers will definitely be able

to help you push your English up to that proficient level with respect to

pronunciation, informal English, and get you sounding a lot more like a native

speaker. So guys that's all but let me know what you think of my opinion.

I really just wanted to share that little bit of information with you because I do

feel like there is a stigma in the English learning community that Russian

teachers aren't good and that you absolutely must learn from a native

English speaker but as I said that just doesn't always make sense and

certainly not when you're at a beginner level.
