The new YouTube monetisation rules have caused a little bit of unrest in the
YouTube community. Now to get monetised you need
four thousand hours of watched content in the past 12 months and thousand subscribers.
It is really hard, especially for people like me that just started, to reach this goal.
But honestly I take everything as motivation. I like to set high goals
and work hard to reach them. Honestly, even with the old rules I knew would
have been hard for me to get monetised, but I decided to start this adventure
just because I felt like it was the right moment for me to come on board and
share my content with you and have a chance to improve my English skills and
my presence in front of the camera. But more importantly have fun doing it. And
after this short rant let's delve into a new episode of Quick Clips.

songs you thought were written in English, but have foreign origins. The first song
is la Mer by Charles Trenet.
La mer qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs
Amazing cover if you haven't recognised that this song was translated in English
as Beyond the Sea. And the English version just took the music and ditched the lyrics.
The original lyrics by Charles Trenet are an ode to the changing moods
of the sea. Jack Lawrence who translated this song
took the title "the sea, la Mer" and added beyond: Beyond the Sea and made a love
song out of it. As a curiosity, if you don't remember, Beyond the Sea was used
as an end credits songs for Finding Nemo.
99 Luftballons...
99 Luftballons...
99 Red Balloons is an anti protest war songs by the German
group Nena. The English translation was written by Kevin McAlea and was a
more poetic than a direct translation of the lyrics. In the German meaning, the
99 luftballons or 99 red balloons are mistaken for UFO
causing a General to send out pilots to investigate. Finding nothing but child
balloons the pilots decided to put on a show and shoot them down. The display of
force worries the nation all around causing a 99 years long war without a
victor. In the English version the 99 red balloons are mistaken for missiles by a
faulty system resulting in a nuclear war. As a curiosity both version German and
English are sung by the same group. The group was never happy with the English
translation and said "We made a mistake here. The song loses something in
translation and even sound silly".
Gloria was written in 1979 by Umberto Tozzi and
reached the top 10 Italian chart for 16 weeks.

The first translation of the song was by Jonathan King and later reworked by
Laura Branigan giving the song a more American kick.
The original Italian version of the song made it in 2013 into two movies
"The wolf of Wall Street" and "Gloria".

Comme d'habitude was first recorded by Herve Villard.
The song was then reworked and brought to success by its writer
Claude François. While staying in France and watching TV, Paul Anka decided to buy
the rights of the song. He then wrote the English lyrics specifically thinking of
Frank Sinatra and the song became My Way. In this case the lyrics of the song are
related in term of structure but the meaning is completely different.
The French version is about routine in a relationship that it's falling out of
love, while the English version is set at the end of a lifetime, approaching death,
and looking back without regrets.
