Заброшенный урановый рудник. Пятигорск. Бештау. Сталк с МШ \ Abandoned uranium mine - Duration: 49:59.

Andrew, where are we now?

We are now inside of Beshtau mountain

in abandoned mine where

was mined uranium containing mineral schrekingerite was found

Are you for the first time here?

No I am here for the second time

First time I was here in July of 2017

Now it`s November

I came again to this

unforgettable places

Hi everyone it is Msh with you

and 3 comrades

Unknown face who became even more unknown

in scarf and so on.

representative of Belarusian cast iron

Our first visit of this Uranium mine

came out to be very informative

we had only 12hours

We didn't manage on physical level

to check most interesting places in here and

took a walk at 10th shaft

and went down to 750 horizon

as it came out we went down in a wrong place

we needed vent shaft and it was located in the different place

and so

even then we understood that to capture something more interesting

we will have to come here once more

Done as I told

after 5 months I with the comrade came here again

and now will try to tell you, what kind of place it is

1943

Foreign intelligence of USSR

informed - in USA project Manhattan is launched

It meant that work on nuclear weapon in states

went from theoretical part to practical

Government of weakened by war USSR

Understood that creation of nuclear weapon by USA is meaning of time

And monopoly towards control of such weapon

May lead to sad outcomes

And began work towards creation of soviet nuke

From all the questions about

creation of soviet nuke - we are interested in one

is supply of ore towards factories

As power of known for that moment mines in Tadzhikistan and Kirgizia

for the needed goal were not enough

8th of April 1944

Government comity of defence

gave order for all geological departments to begin search of radioactive ores

were created special groups

In 1945 amount of work needed to be done is increased

Council of People's Commissars on 13 of October 1945 adopts a resolution

About concentration and specialization of searching work of uranium containing ores

In comity of geology is created

first geological research department

Created to

get rid away of problem with supply of nuclear industry with raw materials

Work on search for Uranium ore is started throughout the Soviet Union.

Such a scale, of course, bears fruits

By 1946-47 Uranium ore was found in Ukraine, Central Asia,

Siberia and the Caucasus.

Because this video is about the Caucasus, then we will stop here

And as usual - during the preparation of this video, I came across a huge number of terms

in a completely foreign subject, so if something

remains incomprehensible to you or if you are working in the mining industry

if you see mistakes in my story

kindly let me know in the comments

They are always open

I will be glad to have a constructive dialogue in this very interesting subject. Okay, let's go

Geologists from the exploration party #1 discovered in Mount Beshtau

located in the North Caucasus several species of uranium-rich minerals

from the group of uranium sluids

The main ones were Zippeite and Uraninite

Later in the future here they also extracted shrekingerite

Yes. It was present here, but not in the quantities to make the extraction profitable

Thus, the main purification work was going on Zippeite and Uraninite

and all other minerals, including Shrekingerit went together with the main two minerals

Clearly the mountain is not entirely of made of useful minerals

The valuable ore is located somewhere deep inside.

In order to find out exactly where mineral is, on the north-western, southern and south-eastern slopes of the mountain

geologists began to dig tunnels into the mountain in several dozen places

Such horizontal tunnels that have access to the surface are called shafts

Later it turned out that the north of the mountain is empty

but the ore was found in the south and south-east

The result of this geological exploration was the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR

on July 29, 1950

on the organization of the enterprise with the romantic name

"P.O. Box #1"

Its task was to extract and process Uranium ore

Its task was to extract and process Uranium ore

Geologists have determined the location of the ore

and now it needs to be picked up. In November 1950

the first high-speed brigade is organized

which at 850 meters starts to go

through shaft #31

Its purpose is to open the deposit, i.e. allows for open access

to the ore from the surface

Naturally there are by-products from digging a shaft.

All together this shafts are called horizon

To name it is used level above sea level

At this point the following phrase should become more clear to you

in November of 1950 the first high-speed brigade began

the tunneling of the shaft 31, which opens the

deposit on the 850th horizon.

The workers, like all the pioneers at that time, were not even provided with

normal housing and other living conditions.

They lived either

in the temporary settlement number 1, located at the foot of the mountain

or in Pyatigorsk. In the following year of 1951

the situation begins to improve

The construction of the Lermontovsky settlement begins

new technologies are introduced, new equipment is supplied

new workshops are opened - drilling, construction, chemical laboratory

mine rescue station.

A new enterprise is being built

With regards to the mining work - the trenching of the shaft of the Vostochnaya mine begins

on the 1003th horizon the field drift of 33rd shaft was knocked down

the tunneling of the 32nd shaft began

In the future, it will become the main shaft for the extraction of all mined ore

I'll tell you later why

At this time the Central Western mine is also being developed

In 1952, the West and East mines are merged into one mine called Mine No. 1

In subsequent years various methods of extraction are being tested

the mine is being expanded, the power plant and the water supply plant are being introduced

Most importantly, in November 1954

a hydrometallurgical plant was commissioned to process uranium ores and obtain chemically pure uranium oxide

Two years later, mine No. 2 was discovered in the neighbouring "Byk" Mountain

The settlement Lermontovsky becomes the city of Lermontov

In 1958 - mine #1 achieved design capacity

Then they began to deal with people

All the workers with lung diseases and women were withdrawn

A complete reconstruction of the ventilation system was made

As a result, by 1961 the mine had become exemplary in terms of management

and in terms of production it exceeded the projected level by 1.6 times

In such a stable mode, the mine worked until 1975

Since 1972

the production started to decline

and on August 31, 1975 the last trolley with ore was lifted to the surface from mine #1

In the next two months, the dismantling and decommissioning of the main equipment was carried out

At the end of 1975

the mine was closed

The main version was the exhaustion of ore reserves

The following 11 years the mine was recultivated

as a result of which the main entrances were blown up

the empty ore was recycled and some work was done to decontaminate the area

In 1991, the mine #2 was also closed

after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the impoverishment of the population

the crowds of marauders stole the remains of metal from the mine.

In the period of 2012-2015

RosAtom conducted a repeated reclamation of both mines,

closed the remaining entrances

eliminated some of the scrap, dredged up, some of the workings were eliminated

And finally in 2017

somebody named MSH came to Pyatigorsk in order to personally see

what was left of such an interesting place

Before going under the ground

I want to tell you what they managed to dig up before the closure of the mine

Were digged around half of a hundred shafts located on 13 horizons

Of course distance between horizons on a height scale

around 30m were made main 2 shafts

Central and Eastern on them were located cage elevators

it reminds passenger elevator but for mine works

Shaft Eastern began itself on the surface and went to the deepest horizon

Slightly above 30 horizon

it was closed and upper part of it was used as ventilation shaft

and from horizon 31 to the bottom "cage" was working

Central shaft was "Blind" - it means with no exit to the surface

Parallel to eastern shaft was made ore elevator

It was made so that ore would be brought to surface from all horizons

they were bringing there ore to this shaft and dropped it down

and on the bottom at 720 horizon via 32 shaft they were bringing it to the surface

between horizons were connections

for ventilating uprising

ventilating uprising in our case is not gov. revolution but

but vertical shaft that

is made from bottom upwards

Yes, like that - from bottom to the surface

in the end it has a dead end shaft that is used for ventilation needs

ventilating uprising or for different material needs

Material uprising

total length of shaft is around 240Km

more accurate data is top secret. From that length are possible to access

around 40-50Km

We will visit more important locations of this mine

and will begin our trip from the 10th shaft

And after 5 months we appeared at exactly same place

Except that this time it is two of us

We get in to chem protection suit

and go down via well known path

What you managed to see at second visit of this mine

Its... Its...

5 nights of heavy exploration

now it is almost the end

I am now sitting emotionless and

all I want is to finish capturing video and get out of here

and go to sleep, but there is still way out ahead of us

We visited not everything - not even close. Here is a huge amount of tunnels

But we saw 10th shaft

13th shaft, shaft number 31

and system of 16th and 32nd shafts

got down to 750 horizon

we captured more interesting places

in this mine. That`s why

most interesting is in this video

Shaft number10

after getting down

to shaft number 10

We try to find exit to 750 horizon

scheme that we have is not very accurate

And because of that we have to explore all the corners

where we can get.

Where are we rushing

What kind of place is 750 horizon

on it self 10th shaft is boring

A lot of interesting is located two levels below

In system of 16th and 32nd shafts, but entrances

are closed very heavy. As an example this is and entrance to the 16th shaft

behind this door on the locks

is located a gate and a concrete cap

They prepared properly to meet diggers

And so to not waste energy and time I want to use

another plan of entering it. Via ventilation uprisings

that are connecting horizons between each other

For that we need

to find place where ventilation shaft begins

go down by it to 750 horizon

and after walking by it get to another ventilation shaft

After climbing it down we will get to the necessary tunnel system

Horizon 750 doesn't have access to surface on its own

and because of that we have to use such complex path

Will we succeed you will see next

We are going in 10th shaft and as I already told you

at the moment of visiting mine, we had not very correct plan

and because of that we had to visit every path

to find needed ventilation shaft because in the summer we went down in the wrong place

We are walking by the side paths

lack of ventilation and a lot of humidity does its work

Abandoned mine carts are sticking to the rails

On the floor... well its hard to call it a floor, is a lot of dirt

that got wet and is trying constantly to suck in the foot wear

and makes unpleasant nasty sounds

permanent wooden joints are falling apart

while you are in here you cant tell what will fall on your head - will it be a rock or rotten peace of wood

and of course it is interesting to know radiation levels in here

Radiation levels are better than few months ago

When we were here for the first time

here was around 600-1000 micro roentgens

now only around 85

but it is still above norm

by 3 times

Such difference in radiation levels can be explained like this

Size of mine is huge

and with surface they are connected with a very small amount of not blown up ventilation shafts

at summer mountain warms up

Mine heats up as well, air expands and

and escaping from all the cracks in mine it brings

radioactive dust with it self

That is why in summer air was rushing from 10th shaft and was very radioactive

at winter situation is different

mountain is cooling as well as shafts

air is compressing and is sucked in to the mountain

and all the dust get clogged in the cracks and because of this, situation on the radiation levels is getting better

You may tell that mountain is breathing

breathing in at winter and breathing out at summer

In place where we got ourselves - are only dead ends

after getting in to all side ways and didn't find anything, we had to go back

to the main hall of 10th shaft and go deeper

After getting out of the mud, we found one more

passage, we followed it and saw

the way down that we will need in the future

But before going down to 750 horizon

we want to explore what we have in here

in system of 10th shaft

and after walking deeper in to the mountain - we can see such door

tunnel goes further and I will tell in advance

this door leads to a battery room

because of it - this tunnel is trapezoidal shape

and after walking by it, we will end up in the main tunnel again

So lets dive in and see what is inside

And here is

almost nothing, but something is left

I will show you it right now. Battery charging room represents from itself

a tunnel in length of 50m

first half is completely empty but second one is more interesting

here we can see left overs of the rails

exactly here were standing electric trolleys that had to be charged

In difference with metro construction where carts

are powered from contact rail. In this ore deposit

Trolleys were run on batteries

And so this batteries had to be charged

leftovers of the rails - everything is simple over here. here had to stand trolleys

on the right side was located equipment (most likely)

On the right wall we can see

cable stands

and this cable stands are painted in several

colours - red, green, yellow

After working in electric supply network

this colouring is obvious for me

as we had a rule of ABC or YEW

Faze A - Yellow, Faze B - Green

Faze C - Red. 3 Fazes

and they are marked

by colour system

It means that here was 3 Faze power supply

and then each Faze was "directed"

and then direct current was sent to batteries

here had to be separate ventilation as

as when batteries are charged they emit hydrogen. and it is very flammable

and so it has to be removed

separately from ventilation system of mine

above we can see bonds

where cables were hung

so most likely cables

were going from above

and were put on cable ladders on the left

and here some how were connected to the trolleys

here as well is located

small pit. But for what it was used I can't tell

first I thought that here were going

cables but

then I understood for what mortgages were used

nothing from the equipment is left apart

from this box that probably was related

to charging trolleys. that is it nothing more is left in here

but nevertheless it was important

place for whole system

after passing charging room

we again get to the hall of 10th shaft

we reached

blocked passage

in 10th shaft we could get further

but further there will be more such places

we can say its a dead end

so there is no logic in going there

in here was gathered Shrekingerit

mineral containing uranium that is illuminating

in UV light specially for this I took

UV light, it is a weak one but

it very nicely shows us what is happening in here

Such Florescence of this mineral

As I understand it is located somewhere there

deep in the mountain, but with water particles of it are washed up

in to the surface

so we can such beautiful marks

I will be honest

The way you see it on the screen

is way different than it is in real life. like day and night

As it is slight violet illumination and beautiful

green light of mineral

sadly camera cant show all of it

So come to the ore mines

in Beshtau mountain

and look at it in real life. You may ask

what radiation level is here

radiation level is 194 micro roentgens

and I already run a test

maybe it may be a higher level

on the ore

but it is the level of mine itself

and this mineral doesn't change it

because it is everywhere around

and you can't see it with an open eye

Radiation levels in here are more or less the same

and to find here something special in here is

almost impossible

we are going back

and now will go to the 750 horizon

I had with myself two chunks of ropes

one 40m and second 50m

after attaching 40m I began my way on

blind tunnel that is ventilating two horizons

main problem here that after connection points

rope was not going down immediately but was bending on a cliff of a shaft

We had to protect rope from a damage

Gladly we had it, after moving down

I saw that the rock via which rope is thrown

is cracked and is holding on the word of honor

Parents and those that love to pay attention to safety details

already got their hair white from the fact that I am not wearing a helmet

But I will tell you one thing

It wont help very much in here

but it wont be a bad think if be honest to the end

rock weights definitely above 100kg

and to put rope on another rope is not an option as it will get damaged on other edges

that is why we have to take a risk

I don't like this place

can you lower me a protector

Going down when you know that above you is a rock

is not very comfortable and you have move with caution

so you wont jump in parts and something wouldn't fall

gladly I already have experience and rocks are only flying from below my feet

just listen how it sometimes sound

Its me

rope got wet

Decent is going very well

I appear at the bottom at the beginning of blind shaft

that combines this and horizon that goes slightly higher

After getting out of ropes I move to the side and wait when my partner

will lower all the belongings and will get down

He haven't went down because of the fear of height

and I faced a problem, should I go further alone or climb up

I chose a second option as to stay alone is a very high risk

and if something will happen with me

hell will come in a half a day at least and at that moment it may be useless

I had to pull all the equipment up and go up myself

at the moment of pulling bags Jonny had a fail

And from the height of 35m his

phone fell down

and because of that phone is now in a bad condition

sound was very echoing

phone is now slightly sad

We are packing and going home

We wont get on a trap as

until we will pack up

What left the most of the memories

It was first ore mine

the first abandoned mine

that I visited in my life

and many more things

but most of all of course was machine room

in shaft # 31

and main ore dropping point

it is a huge shaft with a depth of

few hundred meters

it has a lot of names for this depth

sometimes 200 sometimes 300 meters and when

you drop something down and it is flying

for 15 seconds it becomes impressive

Shaft 31

Next night we spend studying 850 horizon

To which main entrance goes via 31 shaft

we got there via fire exit

after passing technical passages connecting

main and reserve entrance we entered long (many hundred meters long tunnel)

that went in to the depths of the mountain like in the 10th shaft

at first it was kind of dry

only later we entered protective suits and continued our way further

and after a kilometer

we reached so called turn-out it is

two way excavation that served to cross two trolleys going in different ways

BY the way it is one of two shafts

where trolleys were using contact rail

after passing turn-out on the right side I saw a

passage way that led to parallel to the main tunnel block

most interesting in this block

is huge pool of concrete - long, about 50m

but it was needed definitely not for exercise

of workers of Lermontov ore department

block in the end connects with the main tunnel and

above entrance it has sign "Battery room"

Locals think that in here was electrolyte

Put it can be easily denied by the fact that

to the pool are connected pipes from ordinary metal that will corrode by electrolyte

to collect distillated water for electrolyte is not a good idea

as

to preserve its purity in such amounts will be kind of hard

most likely it was a storage place for technological water

as example for fire extinguishing

after leaving battery room we went deeper in to the mountain

in all directions went mine tunnels,

Closed by concrete slabs, but local diggers made holes in them

through them we could see that there was nothing interesting

It is interesting that joints holding walls were constantly changing

we saw concrete and wooden ones as well as metal ones

solid, with gaps, monolith

and many other types

it tells us that mountain

is changing its density in different places

Because of this risk of ceiling falling down everywhere is different

and miners knew about this and carefully

worked on this topic

In securing path of ore from horizon to the surface

after going deeper for few hundred meters more

we reached cross section of many tunnels

by which we reached a place that for me - a person

theory and practice of mining of ore, was very interesting

we came from standard tunnel to a large hall

seems like nothing much

but when you think that it all was digged in the mountain and above ceiling is over 200m of rock

Immediately you look with the respect

so what is this place

It is a machine hall of cage elevator

in other words place thanks to which local elevator was moving

All the levels or more accurately horizons where excavation was going on

permeate through the shaft

connected to "Vostochnaya" shaft,

which had an exit to the surface

The development was initially situated higher, than we are now

And the engine room building was on the surface

When the miners had gone below the level of 31 shaft

they had built an engine room on this level

And the upper remains of the shaft turned into the ventilation shaft

In the engine room were electric engines, reduction gears,

on the output shafts of which were spools with cables,

a brake system and a control panel

OMG, how big this is!

The cables run a little higher in the inclined passage,

they went to the place, where the pulleys were located

I definitely want to see them

When I climbed the rusty staircase I haven't realized that there was nothing beneath me

On what I was standing is very unstable and could collapse at any minute

The remains of the pulley platform and collapsed rock only gives you an illusion of safety

It's better to be careful here

because it's a long way falling down

We went down the staircase and left the engine room behind

We decided to take a look at the branched tunnel system

In a couple of minutes we saw a big pile of junk

we came a little closer and recognized the mine cage shaft

Up there we can see the pulleys

and if we look down, we can see the shaft going down

I'm shocked a little...

when I stood under the mine cage

and looked up, that's one case,

but when I looked down

I had some kind of a jitter, because it is a through shaft

Then I realized, that I was standing on a pile of rocks

which, at worst will collapse, with me standing on it

yeah, of course there are centners of rock,

but anyway I felt uncomfortable

Now we are exploring what do we have here

and here we have a big number of workings

And we need to be careful not to get lost in here

There we have a blockage

Oh, here is a gap

Let's check it out

Just imagine: you a riding on the railroad

and the train, that couldn't manage to cross

And as we see, one really didn't manage

If we head a little further we see a collapse

a dead-end

But pay attention to the narrow-gauge railway

It has a slight rise

reinforced rails

they are concreted

The trolley went up

the railroad

Here we have, hm...

I'll take a guess, here people watched the level of congestion of the trolley

The local guys corrected me, it turns out that here people were in charge of overturning the trolleys

I hope you know, that trolleys weren't unloaded by bare hands

They were flipped over by a special mechanism

something similar to what you see on the photo

Then the ore was poured by gravity

and an empty trolley was sent back for loading

Oh, I'd say it's risky

Wow

What's in there?

There is absolutely nothing

This place is the most famous in this mine

In local jargon this place is called "Megarudosbros"

Talking more scientifically, this is the main ore dropping point

It is a large section vertical shaft, which passes through a horizontal operational horizon of the workings,

to the lowest downhill horizon

The ore, which was mined in the horizon, was carried by the trolleys to the place, where I'm standing now

The trolleys were brought to the tilter, which poured the ore into the unloading chamber

The chamber was connected to the main ore discharge by a tilted connector

When the ore falls down in the 16/32 adit system, it was again loaded into trolleys

and was carried out to the surface through the 32 adit

where it was transported to the hydrometallurgical plant for primary processing

Overall height of this ore elevator is about 200 meters

from the place, where I'm standing it goes up for 70 meters and down for 130 meters

It is a little weird to stand on rails and rotten wood planks, when you know,

that you can repeat the ores way down at any minute

But the rails were in pretty decent condition, and this calmed me down

Going forward, I'll say, that today I'll visit the highest and the lowest parts of this ore elevator

Standing here I didn't what was ahead and decided to take this moment and drop something down

rock

napkin

wrapping up

Only now it has hit the ground

Beautiful and dangerous

especially, where we are standing

Don't repeat this

There are 2 most epic and interesting things in this adit: engine room and the main ore elevator

After you've seen them, you can feel yourself free and go out

But how can you miss a chance of riding a trolley,

especially when you've found a serviceable one

The surface met us with a frost and a beautiful dawn, with elements of St. Petersburg trolling

Where the sun was about to show behind the clouds, but they rose higher and higher in the sky

After waiting about 40 minutes and getting very cold, we descended from the mountain towards the warm home

On the next day, we met with the local guys and headed for the 13th adit, to the top of the mountain

What difficulties did you have at the site?

When visiting the site

the main difficulty was finding entrance

Here they have several tunnels

some are closed

poured with concrete, barricaded, blown off

We had to search for information or talk to locals

With regards to filming

first thing is

fluttering of the lenses

due to difference in temperatures

At the entrance is cooler

Then it gets warmer, when camera is moved

from colder to warmer, moisture in air condenses

then it deposits on the lens

and interferes with filming big time

Some horizons are only accessible

with climbing equipment, and of course physical effort

since we had to walk several kilometers

in difficult conditions, as you can see

there is slurry, mud, water...

you get tired very easily

Also this is the first video in such a format

We decided to try a different approach

We tried to shoot on SLR

We tried to move away from previous format

I hope that whatever I say and shoot will

produce meaningful results that people will appreciate

One more difficulty is that some tunnels

are flooded, not too deep however

you can't walk through it in regular shoes

Good thing I have L-1

I can submerge up to waist

It helps greatly

really helps

Tunnel 13

It's night again and we try to go

deeper into the mountain Beshtau

Trying to squeeze through with the huge bag

I'm going to see Tunnel 13

It's interesting because it's the topmost tunnel with ore elevator

And of course you want to come to a place where

under you there is empty space for hundreds of meters

This time around we are not alone

In our team we have several locals

who have been here several times and are big fans of this place

Lately they try not to come here often

so that not to inhale radioactive air

Meanwhile we are slowly progressing deeper into underground

While getting inside of the mountain I noticed

consecutive constructions, where there was a door before

I searched for information on their purpose

I came across the 119th paragraph of the

General Safety Rules for the Development of Ore and Non-ore Deposits of Minerals Using Underground Method

This is what I have to read to make this video interesting

I won't read this aloud, you can see text on your screen

In short, this door is used for sealing

to achieve required level of ventilation

This door works as follows

Above it is supported by hinges

Steel cables are connected to the lower part

These cables are rolled onto the roller, which lifts the gate

At the side there is a small door for human passage

It also must be kept closed at all times

Meanwhile we are progressing inside of Tunnel 13

towards the ore-drop, paying attention along the way

to various artifacts left from mine operations

The distance from the tunnel to ore-drop didn't seem big

Probably because we got used to walking

and also because

Tunnel 13 is closer to the top of the mountain

and therefore the area of the horizon is smaller compared to lower levels

And here we have familiar unloading station with characteristic

inclined narrow-gauge railway and a place for the operator

And here it is. Nice!

More than 200 meters of pure pleasure

Starting from 13th tunnel, this ore-drop goes

all horizons to the lowest one, so-called rappelling level

Entrance to which is through 16th or 32nd tunnels

Obviously, we took the opportunity

and were throwing things down like little kids

One, two, three

Mind-blowing!

Twisted like a professional

Yeah!! Three, Two, Listen...

Drop when I count to 3

One, Two, Three.

Approximately 12 seconds to fall

So what does it mean?

After we had enough in the ore-drop we headed to the exit

On our way we came into the so-called "warm drift"

I suppose that here inside the mountain there is a source of warm geothermal waters

since the temperature in this drift is around 15C

which is twice as warm as other areas

The drift unfortunately collapsed, so we couldn't go far

We tried to crawl a little further

due to difference in temperatures

the camera lens began to flutter

so instead of video I made a couple of pictures of salt

as you can see them now

Why is it dangerous to be here?

well, you need to understand that these mines have been abandoned for a couple of decades

so everything is becoming worthless, some adits and tunnels collapse, may collapse on your head

not everywhere, but still...

Of course, here is radiation. The radioactive dust is flying everywhere, so you'd better walk around in a gas mask

That's what I was talking about

About 1.3 millirentgen per hour.

And other minor dangers such as wood breaking under you or bumping your head against something

as visiting any other place below the surface

you need to be very careful and attentive

We've spent our last night before leaving in a place, which I aimed for

It is a system of 16/32 adits

It has exits on 2 sides of the mountain range

From the side of Lermontov city, adits #32 and 32BIS, which are located close to each other

And adit #16 from the side of Pyatigorsk city

We are aiming for #16

It was freezing cold outside and it snowed

so the mountains are very slippery to walk

I hope me can make it in the warm adit as soon as possible

By the way, portal #16 is one of the few, that was preserved in its original form

which adds some historicity

Adit #16

the entrance is closed

Somehow we need to get in there, without breaking the door

the portal looks very epic

and is radioactive

50 microroentgen from the outside

well, we'll see what's inside

No sooner said than done

We are inside, walking deeper inside the adit

We leave the steel door and a concrete slab behind my back

Behind the wall was a valve of a radon pipe

From here towards Pyatigorsk specialized clinics go mineral pipes, which contain water with radon gas

In specialized clinics people pay money to swim in this water

And we can drown here for free, if we would like to

The system of 16/32 adits is located at an altitude of 712 meters above the sea level

so it is horizon 712

Earlier in the video I said that the horizon is 720

The fact is that the beginning of adit 16 is at the height of 712 meters

And the main part of the horizon is at the height of 720

In this way the adit slightly rises to 8 meters

what is unnoticeable, due to its length

There weren't any developments below this horizon, so it is the lowest one

It was the main field development of the horizon

The ore, that was gathered on upper levels was dropped down here

and through adit 32 was transported to hydrometallurgical plant in Lermontov city

for enrichment

As the horizon is the lowest, the mountain area is bigger than in upper horizons

so the length of the excavation is longer

We have to pass a few kilometers to see what we want

What do we want to see?

Tell now and then repeat the same thing? You'll see everything yourself, let's go

Here is the end of one of the pipes, that go to Pyatigorsk specialized clinics

The background radiation here is 475 microroentgen

At the end of an open part of the pipe is a small valve

Let's try to open it a little

Will something happen?

wow, a radon fountain

A radon fountain has to begin from somewhere and of course we are curious to see it

we start to walk along the pipes

The pipes turn from adit #16 to gallery #2, which goes down to the lowest part of the main ore elevator

Unfortunately, the radon pipes turn to a closed gallery and we won't be able to see the beginning

We are going down to the lowest part of the East mine

Where was a cage and the lowest part of the main ore elevator

As you remember, in the 31 adit system they were located close to each other

Pay attention to the plates

An estuary is an exit

If the 1-st plate is rather simple, the 2-nd shows the length of the exit from the 31-st adit

But it is 120 meters above

Likely, it is the distance to the exit, including the difference between the vertical horizons

And here is a connector to the main ore discharge and the cage

We pass through the remains of the ventilation door

and, at first, we see a door to perforator room

That's what was written on the door

The room is empty, so we continue to go further

Later we noticed a man passage

according to the map, it goes a few horizons upwards

Next we see the lowest part of the Eastern shaft,

which goes all the way down from the top of the mountain, passing through all horizons

I had no outline, which you can see in the video

And firstly thought, that I had seen the Eastern shaft and the main ore drop

because it was filled with junk, that was dropped from above

Later, the guys sent me a photo of the main ore drop in adit #16

only then I realized, that I must have missed it, because I can't remember this anywhere

However, we were very tired of many-kilometer hiking and shooting every night, that it's not surprising after all

anyway, let's move on

After we'd passed the shafts, we decided to walk through a loop tunnel,

which surrounds the main ore elevator

here passes a double-track railroad and on both tracks stand trolleys

On one I noticed an interesting welded inscription, which said 1960

maybe the production year of the trolley

I was also happy to see a working switchboard

When we've reached the 16th adit, we saw smudges on the wall,

presumably containing the mineral, that was mined here

When I turned on my ultraviolet torch, I removed my doubts

Very beautiful, of course

thumbs up, if you agree with me

And here are 2 photos to compare, they were shot from one angle,

one with a normal and the other with an ultraviolet one

we moved further and further from the estuary of the 16th adit

There lots of artifacts around us

mostly, I liked a very big stock of trolleys

There are about 4 dozens of them here

The fact is that the main and the most important shaft is very close to this point, which is called Central

It is a blind shaft, which connects the 940 horizon with the lowest ones

that means us

It's developing began in 1951

In our days, its impossible to get in there, because after the closure of the mines,

all passages to the central shaft were blown up

Some passages survived, but the time has done its work by blocking the passages with rock collapses

So, without losing any minute finding the central shaft we head to the estuary of 32nd shaft

Now something interesting

this is a mobile toilet on wheels

people can make their own ore drop here

and a carriage for man

The workers were brought to there workplaces on these trolleys

including the cage, from where they were head to the needed horizon

c-care; c-convenience

Tightly, but better than walking on big distances

In one of the tunnels we saw a pile of packs with red content.

it is a gel anionite

As it seems to me, it was used on the for hydrometallurgical plant

for the fission of uranium from minerals

but it is very strange to keep them here, because the plant is 4 kilometers from the estuary of 32nd shaft

The 16th shaft after passing through the central shaft becomes the 32nd shaft

This means that we are close to the exit of from the mountain

We look to the left and see a red door, behind we see a few rooms, in which the explosives were held

I think it is clear why they needed explosives here

And who is confused try to remember that the man were passing through establishments of rock, not sand

which had to be blown up

And this was the central storage of explosives

Of course there is no explosives here, only some spare lamps

And I think I know why they are here. The blast wave might have broken some of the lamps,

and these were held here for replacement

some kind of a consumables storage

What is very interesting is the exit of this storage. The exit is built like an entrance to some pillboxes

Look, we exit like a snake

If something explodes in here, the blast wave will be weakened

It won't reach the shafts and prevent them from collapsing

at the exit we are met by a boring machine on the rail

It is like a puncher, but much more powerful, than you have in your closet

It drills a hole, where the explosives go

After the explosion, the ore splits into rocks, which are taken out,

then drilling a hole again, putting the explosives and so on

That's how they make the tunnels, where the shovel is useless and the jackhammer would take you years

Yeah, the rock pressure is mercilessly

somewhere the rock is very firm and the tunnels will stay for a long time

and somewhere, like here in 32nd adit, the tunnel is in bad condition despite the monolith

I'll explain everything rather simple. Monolith is when the walls and the ceiling is poured in concrete

without any blocks, angular frames, tubings and so on

this is the most expensive and most reliable type of tunnel coating

What can I say, a couple of years and

a few little earthquakes and this adit will collapse and nothing will remain

At the mine in the monolith was coated only part 32nd adit,

which was made in unstable Maikop clay for total length of 1300 meters

Threw this edit the ore was transported to the plant, so it was necessary to avoid any possible delays,

connected to the repair of the coating of the tunnel

The adit was made in 1951, while in some places

the technological process of coating the tunnel in monolith was broken

As a result cracks appeared in the monolith and it was later reinforced with metal frames with ribs of rigidity

At that time there was a fear that the whole problem area would have to be reinforced on the frames,

because various cracks appeared in many places

But everything was ok

However, before the closure of the mine, the remaining cracks may not interfere with its operation,

but, 40 years later, it is very obvious that the final destruction of the 32 adit

will most likely begin from these cracks

After passing a dangerous site, we saw an approach to the ventilation shaft of this adit #32 BIS

In front of us we have a fork in 2 adits: 32 and 32 BIS

They are not that big and reach the territory of the of the electromechanical plant

We squeeze through the passenger cars and get into the section of the tunnel with the a closed watertight door.

Fortunately, it has an open window

behind this door is a concrete slab, which unfortunately didn't get filmed

Returning back to the fork, we go to the nearby 32 BIS adit

But even there we get disappointed

The exit is closed with a concrete slab

Apparently, these are the results of reclamation, carried out several years ago

Well. Teleporting through the wall, as we did at the entrance to the 16th adit won't work

Anyways, for the first time in this system we've seen and shown you more than enough
