YouTube Subscriber Counter v2 // Becky Stern - Duration: 3:20.

Hey, it's Becky.

I promised I'd update my youtube subscriber counter project when I hit ten thousand, so

that's what we're doing today.

If you don't remember version one, here's the recap.

The circuit uses an ESP8266 microcontroller to fetch the live subscriber count, then displays

the number on a seven segment display.

The whole thing's inside a shadowbox made to resemble a play button award.

This time around I'm using the standard backpack kit for two of these displays, and I soldered

them up according to the official assembly instructions.

The backpacks made it super easy to communicate

with the displays using only two pins over I2C.

The way the microcontroller can talk to more than one display is to change it's I2C address

by bridging one or more of the address pads on the back.

I'm using a NodeMCU board this time, but any ESP8266 board with the I2C pins exposed will

work fine.

In my case that's D1 and D2.

I always build a breadboard prototype for projects before attempting to solder the final

version, which gives me a chance to make any adjustments while I work on the code.

To write out the number across both displays, first I'll set them up with their corresponding

addresses, and initialize them in the setup.

Then when it comes time to display the subscriber count, I'll split it up into two variables.

Divide the count by ten thousand to get the digits for the left display, then take the

remainder, that's what this modulo, divide by and then take the remainder of, ten thousand,

to get the digits for the right display.

If the left display has something to display and the second number is under a thousand

or a hundred or ten, we need to add some zeros to link the digits with the left hand display.

The network components of this sketch use Brian Lough's youtube api library for arduino,

you just supply your google api key, youtube channel id, and your wifi credentials.

I've also published a version of this sketch that uses wifimanager, so you can change the

network without reprogramming the device, at Brian's suggestion.

I put together the final circuit using a perma proto, but because my frame is only 5 by 7,

a full size one wouldn't fit-- I should have gotten a bigger size.

I managed to put everything on the half size board but I wouldn't recommend you follow

this layout exactly, since I sorta hacked away some of the pins on the node mcu and

cut some traces to others on the back of the board.

I made a second display for the rest of my social trackers, and positioned things a bit

differently using a full size and a half size breadboard, which I think worked out a little

better.

Anyway, I scaled up my template and cut it out, using this other piece to help with positioning.

Everything just barely fits into the shadowbox with a little scrap cardboard as compression

padding to get the display pressed up against the glass.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP ANNOUNCED PLANS FOR A $1.7 TRILLION INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT

PLAN ON WEDNESDAY. �We�re also working to rebuilding our

crumbling infrastructure by stimulating a $1 trillion dollar investment, and that will

actually probably end up being $1.7 trillion dollars,� he said.

The president revealed the price-tag during a meeting with about a hundred mayors of cities

inside the United States. He plans to introduce the plan at his State of the Union address

with further details afterward.

�Oh, you like that?� Trump asked as the mayors applauded wildly and cheered. �I

can tell we have mayors in the room � only mayors could be that excited.�

He said that he wanted all of the projects funded by his plan to be �on time and under

budget.�

Trump also promised to start sending military equipment back to local communities, something

that the Obama administration tried to stop.

During the meeting, Trump touted his administration�s first year as a great success, pointing to

the economic benefits of the tax cut legislation passed in 2017.

�Remember I used to say, �What do you have to lose?�� he asked. �And people

said, �I don�t know if that�s a nice thing to say. I said, �Of course, it is.�

For 100 years, the Democratic mayors have a done a terrible � I mean, they�ve done

some bad work.�

Trump pointed to Democrat mayors of major cities that boycotted the meeting because

of his stance on sanctuary cities. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Denver Mayor

Michael Hancock were among the mayors that protested the meeting.

�The mayors who choose to boycott this event have put the needs of criminal, illegal immigrants

over law-abiding America,� Trump said. �So let me tell you, the vast majority of people

showed up.�
