Alarm bells were ringing loudly for Real Madrid after last Sunday's match at Balaidos.
Los Blancos, were yet again far from their best, dropping two more points and falling even further behind
in the title race.
A brace from Gareth Bale was the only ray of sunshine for a team that continues to fall apart in the second half
of games and who are still having to contend with the poor form of a number of their star players.
"What we've got to do is work, stay strong, keep going, keep running, keep fighting, there's no other way.
We're sad and deflated, but if we want to improve we've got to pick ourselves up for our next game and do our
very upmost to win"
16 points adrift from FC Barcelona and with the urgent need to win, Real Madrid finish the first half of the
season next Saturday with a game against Villarreal in the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Yellow Submarine drew with Deportivo last matchday but they're only 4 points behind Madrid
in the table and will be eager to add to Zidane's side's woes.
"We've got nothing to lose. We'll be going there with our hearts set on doing our very best. They play there all the
time, maybe we won't play in a stadium like that ever again, so we're going to make the most of the
opportunity and hopefully come out on top"
Javi Calleja's side have the Colombian striker Roger Martinez back in the squad,
although all the signs are that Enes Unal, who scored last weekend, will keep his place in the attack alongside
Carlos Bacca.
Manu Trigueros also returns having missed the game against Deportivo, but Victor Ruiz is out due to
suspension.
The main news for the home side is the return of the left back Dani Carvajal.
The meeting between these two clubs has in recent times become something of a classic
in the championship.
This year will be the twentieth anniversary of the Real Madrid-Villarreal match in August '98:
the first ever game in the top flight for the yellow submarine which featured a legendary goal for the side
from Gica Craioveanu.
Since then Los Blancos have dominated the encounter, especially at the Bernabeu,
where Villarreal have now gone 18 matches without a win.
Memorable games, so far, have been: the 3-3 draw from the 2005/2006 season in which Zidane got his last goal
at the Bernabeu;
the 4-2 Real win in 2011 with a hat trick from Ronaldo; and Mourinho's infamous celebration in front of the
opposing bench and fans.
Villarreal have, however, managed two draws in their last three visits.
Last time out, goals from Bruno and Sergio Ramos saw the game end in a 1-1 draw.
Real Madrid and Villarreal face up to each other in the Bernabeu and there's no safety net for Los Blancos.
Zidane's team just cannot afford to slip up against an opponent who will be hoping to take advantage of their
predicament.
It's the most intriguing game in this weekend's LaLiga Santander.
