Waching daily Jan 25 2018

Hi everyone!

Today, I'm on the island of Coronado, which is an island just outside of San Diego.

You can go here by car over a bridge, overlooking the water and skyline.

It's absolutely beautiful. Or, you can take a boat.

And look at this beach! It's incredible!

Wow, it's really hot today. I wish I'd brought my bathing suit!

This is the Hotel del Coronado. I don't know if you recognize it, but you might.

It was in the 1959 Billy Wilder movie called Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe.

They shot a lot of the scenes here on the beach and they actually shot some at the hotel as well.

The hotel was built in 1888 and it is the second largest wooden structure in the United States.

In the 1920s, it was the playground for all the Hollywood celebrities.

They would come down here to San Diego to party and drink and have a good time.

Today, it's still a really big hotel and resort and a lot of people come here, celebrities as well.

Wow, it really is beautiful here.

It's a really nice place if you just want to come here and walk around.

It must be incredible to live in the hotel and be able to overlook the ocean. The view!

They even have a beach bar.

If I were to stay at this hotel, I would probably choose one of these little beach villas.

How nice would it be to wake up in the morning and go out on your balcony,

take a deep breath and breathe in the ocean air. I wouldn't mind doing that every day.

You know, guys, it's really fun being in the sun, but it can also get pretty exhausting.

I'm super-hot right now, so I know just what to get because I'm melting away.

Ta-da! Ice cream, of course.

This is probably the biggest ice cream I've ever had.

Let's see if it tastes good.

Ready? Mmmm. That's really good. Wow. Chocolate ice cream,

whipped cream, bananas …. Dreamy. Perfect on a hot day.

Wow. That ice cream was really something.

This is the city centre of Coronado with a population of around 25,000.

Coronado is actually Spanish and it means "the crowned one,"

so the city's nickname now is The Crowned City.

This is the main shopping street,

so you have all the shops, coffee places, restaurants … everything you need.

This one's nice! I like the colors. Very beachy.

I wonder if you can rent these bicycles or just purchase them.

I notice that a lot of people actually ride bicycles around here.

It's perfect because you're on the island, so why take a car when you can take a bike?

These look like … oh, they're e-bike rentals. You can actually rent these.

I guess they have a motor on them, so you don't have to …

You can get acai bowls. Lots of people eat acai bowls in California.

Oh, look! Postcards! Let's see this one. I guess this is the waterfront of San Diego.

They have a lot of different ones. Oh, here's one of Coronado.

That's the hotel. Hotel del Coronado, that's what it's called.

And then, obviously, the flag of California. You see that one everywhere.

I just love it when you can walk down the street

and you have all these beautiful trees, like the palm trees.

It just looks nice – so inviting, I think.

Especially now, that the sun is shining, it's just beautiful.

I've had a really fun day here in Coronado. I got to spend time on the beach, enjoy the sun,

and I had a really amazing ice cream.

Now, I want to know, what is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Comment below and you can win this super cute coin purse with a surfer and the sunset on it.

Don't forget to watch next week. See you!

Now we turn to our Michelle Park at the weather center for the latest updates.

That's right, Daniel.

The cold wave this time is really harsh.

Through the evening, the readings will continue to drop.

Because of this sharp wind, it's become extremely dry.

The east coast and the capital are getting it the worst.

They're under dryness warnings.

Under sunny skies, Seoul starts off tomorrow at minus 17 degrees Celsius.

Daegu and Busan begin at minus 13 and minus 10 degrees.

The afternoon will stay bright with Seoul at minus 9 degrees, while

Gwangju and Busan rise to minus 3 and minus 1 degree.

Government to increase effort to tackle youth unemployment rate - Duration: 2:47.

Staying with that special meeting on the job situation.

Lively discussions took place during the 80-minute-long session, as a group directly affected by the

issue also shared their views.

Our Cheongwadae correspondent Hwang Hojun dives into the details.

Despite President Moon's demand for increased efforts to create more jobs for young jobseekers,

experts say that task won't be easy.

During the special meeting at the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae on Thursday, experts

said young adults between the age of 25 to 29, also known as echo boomers, seeking for

a job will increase in the next four years.

The term echo boomers refers to the children of baby boomers born in the 1980s and 90s.

The scholars at the meeting insisted the government must create public jobs, find overseas jobs,

and support young start-up entrepreneurs to alleviate the situation at least in the short

run.

The vice chairperson of the Presidential Committee for Job Creation said the government has put

great efforts to tackle this issue since the launch of the administration; such efforts

include the implementation of a supplementary budget for job creation worth about 9.4 billion

U.S. dollars, coming up with a blueprint to create 810-thousand jobs in the public sector,

and deciding to transition more than 200-thousand irregular and temporary staff to full-time

regular employees by the year 2020.

He also introduced some measures the government will newly take up, such as improving the

system to enhance the effectiveness of existing projects for job creation, coming up with

new projects that will lead to the creation of high-quality jobs, and providing education,

training, and information on employment while also expanding job opportunities overseas.

Among the attendees of Thursday's meeting were current college students and job seekers.

They demanded policies that will not only support them to establish startups or find

jobs overseas, but also help them prepare for such goals as well as follow up measures.

They also asked the government to communicate more with the younger generation as they are

the main recipients of many of the administration's key policies, such as reversing the record-low

birthrate in the country and preparing industries for the 4th industrial revolution.

President Moon also said at the end of the meeting that it is crucial for the government

to listen to such calls, and that drastic measures should be implemented if needed to

tackle the nation's youth unemployment issue.

"President Moon also noted the youth unemployment issue will be difficult to resolve in a matter

of days.

However, he also stressed the government must show that it is putting its best effort to

give hope to the young people."

President Moon ordered government officials of each ministry to come up with their own

plans to resolve the issue based on the discussions and views exchanged at the meeting by next

month.

North Korean Olympic ice hockey players arrive in South - Duration: 2:03.

The last minute decision to form a unified women's ice hokcey team for the olympics drew

mixed response.

But from here on, athletes of both Koreas must toss everything aside and focus on bringing

out the best in each other when they hit the rink together.

Pyongyang's squad has arrived in Jincheon, ready to train and put the joint team's chemistry

to the test in a friendly match.

Won Jung hwan has the full story.

The North Korean women's ice hockey players arrived in South Korea on Thursday.

12 hockey players, along with 3 staff members, will form a combined team with their southern

counterparts for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

After crossing the border on Thursday morning, the team, wearing the colors of the North

Korean flag, headed to the national training center in Jincheon, 90 kilometers south of

Seoul.

The coach of the North Korean team expressed his feelings toward forming the only combined

South-North team at the PyeongChang Olympics.

"I am very pleased to participate at the Olympics as the only unified team formed between North

and South.

If we work together with unified strength and mind, I think we will achieve good results

at the Games."

The hockey team have their first training session next week under Sarah Murray, the

head coach of the unified team,... and will play Sweden in a friendly match five days

before the start of the Olympics.

Their first group stage match is against Switzerland on February 10th.

Another 10 North Korean athletes including a figure skating pair,... and several speed

skaters and skiers will also compete at PyeongChang.

But North Korea's participation has proved controversial among South Koreans.

Some welcomed the North's participation,... but others complained that the unified women's

ice hockey team was unfair to the South Korean athletes, depriving them of a chance to compete

at the games.

And there are concerns that the sudden addition of so many players so close to the competition

could also disrupt team chemistry and impact on results.

South Korea's economy grows 3.1% in 2017, fourth-quarter GDP falls 0.2% on-quarter - Duration: 1:46.

The Bank of Korea released its preliminary data on the country's fourth quarter growth

and the full-year GDP expansion for 2017.

The figures make interesting reading as various factors are at play.

Kim Hyesung has the numbers by the central bank.

For the first time in three years, South Korea's economic growth surpassed the three percent

mark in 2017.

According to the Bank of Korea on Thursday, South Korea's real GDP grew three-point-one

percent last year, up from two-point-eight percent in 2016.

This comes on the back of strong exports, especially semiconductors and electronics,

amid the recovering global economy.

Private consumption showed a gradual recovery, with both construction investment and facilities

investment continuing a trend of expansion.

But in the final quarter of 2017, the country's economy contracted zero-point-two percent,

recording the worst quarterly growth since 2008.

The central bank attributed the slower growth to a base effect as third quarter growth marked

one-point-five percent, the fastest expansion in seven years.

Fourth quarter year-on-year growth came to three percent.

"Fewer working days over the extra-long Chuseok holiday held back industrial production, and

shipments went out earlier in the third quarter.

It could be misleading to look at growth just in the fourth quarter.

Overall, in 2018, private consumption is likely to keep rising, but investment is likely to

decline as export growth slows down somewhat."

Exports contracted more than five percent on-quarter,... as a rise in exports of semiconductors

was offset by a fall in outbound shipments of automobiles.

Imports also fell four-point-one percent as inbound shipments of machinery shrank.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in lashes out at his gov't over rising youth unemployment rate - Duration: 2:46.

President Moon Jae-in had some harsh words for his government.

Get their priorities straight and improve the nation's gloomy employment numbers.

This comes as there appears to be little signs of hope for young jobseekers.

Moon Connyoung starts us off with the liberal leader's remarks.

More jobs, quality jobs, and jobs for the nation's young jobseekers... namely those

in the 15 to 29 age bracket.

That was one of the new South Korean president's key campaign pledges coming into office in

May, last year.

Now, more than eight months on the job, in wide display on Mr. Moon Jae-in's "National

Employment Situation Board" is a whopping youth unemployment rate over 9-point-2 percent

as of December 2017.

That's almost three times higher than the nation's overall jobless rate of 3-point-3

percent.

"I have repeatedly highlighted the urgency of our youth unemployment problem even calling

it a 'national catastrophe.'

. (cut) But, it certainly does not appear that

each ministry has placed its utmost policy priority on creating jobs for this age bracket."

.

Speaking at a special meeting of top government officials, members of the presidential committee

for job creation, the fourth industrial revolution, as well as nearly a dozen young job seekers,

President Moon lashed out at his government asking to devote the next three to four years

on executing drastic measures to tackle the socioeconomic problem.

To do so, the South Korean leader laid out three key factors to contemplate when discussing

job creation for job seekers in their late 20s.

One, a job creation policy must be flexible to market and user demands.

Policymakers must keep their ears open to feedback and adjust their policies accordingly.

Two, job creation requires active participation from the private sector.

This is particularly true for small and medium sized enterprises to solve jobs and skills

mismatch and sustainability of job creation.

And, finally... government-wide efforts to encourage and support young job seekers to

find employment overseas... may that be at international organizations or at leading

global firms.

"Despite the president's reprimand, it's still uncertain whether the chronic problem of youth

unemployment can be solved as the high jobless figure in this age group tells only part of

the story.

Nearly half of those who are newly employed hold non-regular jobs, and the jobless rate

among college graduates in their 20s is more than triple the overall rate.

The president's grim resolve to get the nation's 20s and 30s working is one thing, but it's

quite another to fundamentally solve the multi-tier socioeconomic and demographics problem.

Moon Connyoung, Arirang News, the Blue House."

Gov't considers taxation of cryptocurrencies and launches task force to investigate suspicious... - Duration: 2:47.

The Korean Financial Supervisory Commission plans to create a special task force to investigate

any cryptocurrency transactions deemed 'suspicious'.

Kim Mok-yeon sheds light on the latest measures to crack down on illegal activities within

that new market.

Korea's finance minister Kim Dong-yeon has said that the government is considering imposing

taxes on virtual currency transactions to cope with the sudden investment craze in the

market.

During a meeting at the National Assembly on Thursday, Kim pointed out the problem of

speculation by investors, adding that the government is yet to release a set of measures

to stabilize the issue and to take strict action against financial crimes.

Earlier in the day, the Financial Supervisory Commission's Financial Intelligence Unit announced

that it would create a special task force to investigate suspicious virtual currency

transactions.

The task force is set to evaluate and analyze suspicious transactions handed over by six

local banks that have the highest number of cryptocurrency transactions.

Earlier this week, the government imposed obligations for these banks to report what

the government calls "suspicious transactions" to the FIU beginning January 30th, the date

when investors will be allowed to create new accounts under their real names.

The government has categorized transactions between banks and cryptocurrency exchanges

exceeding 9,400 U.S. dollars per day or 18,800 dollars per week as 'suspicious transactions'.

It also classified frequent deposits and withdrawals from exchanges as 'suspicious', with accounts

that performed more than five such transactions a day or seven transactions a week included

in the list.

Once the FIU finishes its review of the suspicious dealings, it will hand over transactions related

to tax evasion to the National Tax Service and the Korea Customs Service, and transactions

related to financial crimes to investigative agencies such as the police.

The Financial Supervisory Service said that it will also strengthen its monitoring of

virtual currency transactions by financial companies by elevating the current anti-money

laundering team to a larger department and designating former commissioner of the FIU

Yoo Kwang-yeol as the head of that department.

An industry expert says the measures come as part of government efforts to prevent people

using cryptocurrencies for illegal activities.

"Cryptocurrencies can be used to evade taxes or for money laundering.

So one of the roles of the new task force would be to look at suspicious transactions

to make sure that cryptocurrencies are not used for these purposes."

The expert said that the government's new measures are an unexplored territory where

definite results cannot be foreseen, but added that at least in theory, when coupled with

the recently implemented real name regulations, the task force would at least be able to trace

transactions that are obviously suspicious.

Kim Mok-yeon, Arirang News.

Shelving doesn't have to be boring or

tedious it can be a fun and enjoyable pastime!

Your home décor gets interesting,

while you create lucrative storage spaces in your home

from all kinds of stuff.

Next, this is 6 DIY Creative Shelving Ideas you can try for your living room

by your loyal list maker simphome.com

1.

Reclaimed Wood Floating Shelves

Measure and cut wood pickets.

You need 4 boards for top and bottom each

and 12 boards for sides if you wish to make 6 shelves.

Cut the end using a miter saw at a 45-degree angle.

Glue nailed pieces together to form a rectangular tube.

Drill a pilot hole through the boards before screwing on

to the wall and ensure they are level.

2.

Nursery Room Bookshelves

Cut the 1x10's in half, use the pre-drilled

screw holes in the back to fix a couple of 1x4's to each other.

Apply glue to the front of the 1X4, and clamp either end of the 1x2 to the 1x4

to hold the boards into place, and then naile the pieces together.

Paint them and your nursery bookshelves are

complete and ready to be installed!

3.

Easy DIY Floating Shelves

First, Build the frame first.

The back of the frame that is attached to

your wall should be a 2×3 cut at 32″.

Each shelf has 3 brackets that are each 7.75″ long.

Attached the brackets using 2.5″ pocket hole screws.

Use Gorilla wood glue to each one to make it extra sturdy.

You can use pinewood or whitewood whichever is available.

If you want, you can get them distressed as well.

4.

Chalkboard Chubby

Carefully measure and transfer provided pattern to your 1x6 sides.

Cut using a jigsaw and then sand edges till they are even and matching.

Attach two sides together with the bottom as shown in

the picture either with 1 1/4"

pocket hole screws or 2" finish nails and wood glue from outsides.

Apply the same technique with shelves.

When you finish use primer or wood conditioner.

5.

Stacked End Table Shelf (Roadkill Rescue)

You need to cut the end table half with beadboard

added onto the back for some texture.

Cut more beadboard to fit the back of each of the cut ends of

the table to make it more stabel.

Next, Sand the piece using wood glue to put some of the trim back in place.

Begin with 60-grit sandpaper, work your way down

to a 220-grit and then wipe it clean.

Prime and paint it, then drill corner braces to the bottom,

position bottom half of table

in place and screw the other end of the corner brace into the wall.

Last, Stack other half of the end and repeat.

6.

DIY Wood Shelf Organizer

Attach two 180cm long pieces of timber- each 23.5cm wide - together.

Shelves can be 9 cm.

Pine is soft enough to attach the screws by hand,

so you don't need any electrical tools;

just a saw, a measuring tape, some sanding paper and a leveller.

that's it
