No sign of any let-up in the heatwave here in Korea.

Temperatures will stay well above 30 degrees Celsius today too.

The heat in the past couple of weeks has caused several deaths, in fact.

Now the government has decided to act to keep people safe.

Park Hee-jun reports.

It's another weekend of scorching heat in South Korea.

As of Sunday,... heatwave warnings have been issued for most parts of the country.

Daytime highs everywhere are over 30 degrees Celsius... and as high as 37 degrees in some

regions, including Daegu.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of Saturday,...

around 890 people have been treated for heat-related illnesses this summer.

Ten people have died.

Over 75 percent of those patients are reported to have suffered from heatstroke over the

past couple of weeks,... when the rainy season ended.

Seven of the nine deaths also occurred in the past two weeks.

The agency advises people to refrain from outdoor activities in the hottest time of

the day, between noon and 5 PM.

It also recommends staying hydrated and cool, and avoiding the sun,... especially those

50 or older, who are most vulnerable to the heat.

The government has decided to reflect those voices calling for more to be done about this

dangerously hot summer by designating the heatwave as a natural disaster, which will

free up resources and allow for emergency measures.

An official from the Ministry of Interior and Safety said Sunday... that the ministry

intends to push for relevant laws to be passed at the National Assembly.

Those would enable South Korea to provide stronger, long-term measures to cope with

the deadly heat.

Korean unified team wins gold at 2018 Korea Open Table Tennis mixed doubles - Duration: 1:11.

Inter-Korean cooperation has led to some great results this week in table tennis.

A pair of players from South and North playing together... have won gold in the mixed doubles

at the Korea Open in Daejeon.

South Korea's Jang Woo-jin and North Korea's Cha Hyo-sim beat a Chinese team in the gold

medal match 3 to 1.

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, who was watching,... praised the Koreans for playing

so well despite not having much time to practice together.

He also said their spirit will contribute to the improvement of inter-Korean relations.

South Korea's Jang Woo-jin said it was one of the most memorable matches of his career.

He expressed his appreciation to the North Korean players and staff, saying they built

deep trust in a short period of time.

Here's what he said after they won.

"I want to thank Hyo-sim a lot, because, every time I tried to take risks and got nervous,

she told me to play just as we'd been doing and stayed very calm.

She was really friendly and I depended on her a lot.

If there's another opportunity to form a unified team, I'd love to play with Hyo-sim again

one day."

Woman killed inside Trader Joe's during standoff, Los Angeles mayor says

Los Angeles police arrested a man outside a Trader Joe's on Saturday evening, bringing an apparent end to an incident in which a man barricaded himself inside the grocery store for hours after running from police.

A woman inside the store was killed, Mayor Eric Garcetti said Saturday at a news conference. He did not identify her or say how she died. The suspect was wounded in his left arm after exchanging shots with police, Garcetti told reporters.

"We have successfully taken the suspect into custody without incident," Los Angeles police said on Twitter.

Here are the latest developments: • About 40 people were inside the store in the Silver Lake neighborhood when the armed man entered, Police Chief Michael Moore said.

• The suspect, 28, shot his grandmother and a younger female earlier in the day, police said. Earlier, police had described the suspect as being in his late teens.

• He ran into the Trader Joe's after crashing his grandmother's car outside the store during a police pursuit, police said.

• After talking with hostage negotiators, the suspect handcuffed himself and surrendered outside the store, Moore said.

• He said the man shot his grandmother seven times and she has undergone a series of surgeries at a local hospital. Her condition was not given.

Events began with a shooting in the 1600 block of 32nd Street around 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET) in which an elderly woman and a young woman were victims, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez told CNN. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The suspect, described by police and witnesses as an African-American male, fled in his grandmother's 2015 Toyota Camry, taking the younger victim with him. He fired multiple rounds at officers during the police pursuit, Lopez said. None of the officers was injured.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle and ran into the busy store on Hyperion Avenue, Lopez said.

Some customers immediately ran out of the store and police surrounded the building. Over the course of the three-hour standoff, several people walked out of the store with their hands up. Some employees climbed out a back window on a chain ladder.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old woman was transferred to a hospital in fair condition. She was removed from a vehicle, not the inside of the store, Stewart said. It was not immediately known whether that woman was the one from the original shooting.

Witness Devin Field said it appeared traffic prevented the suspect from escaping police when he crashed in front of the store. The suspect had a pistol in his hand and "just started opening fire on the police behind him," Field said. When police returned fire, Field and others got down on the ground, he said.
