Hey everybody! Welcome back to my channel. Today I'm going to be doing the mid-year
book freakout tag. If you don't know what this tag is you must be new to BookTube.
Everybody's been doing it. We are halfway through 2018. It is now July. 6 months
have already passed in this year somehow. I don't know how. But this is a really
popular tag that comes about halfway through every year. It was created by
Chami several years ago and people have just continued to use it and it's a
really fun tag. It's a good way to kind of check in on your reading for the year
so far. I have a goal of reading 100 books
during the year 2018 and I have read 75 books so far this year. So I am well in
the realm of reaching that goal and exceeding that goal. I would say I've had
a pretty great reading year so far and I'm hoping the second half of the year
goes just as well. So with that being said I'm gonna hop into the questions.
The first question is the best book that you've read so far this year and I have
three books that I would like to highlight and they're all thrillers. So
I'm really enjoying my thrillers this year. The first book is Dark Matter by
Blake Crouch. This is a science fiction thriller that involves the multiverse
theory and I just found this so enjoyable. It's about a man named Jason
who has a pretty enjoyable life. He's a professor at a local college, he has a
wife and a son, and he likes his little life. And then all of a sudden he gets
kidnapped by another Jason who then takes over his life. So this is kind of
all about him getting back to his life. I had such a fun time reading this. I
couldn't put it down. I needed to know what happened next
and would highly recommend this one. My next favorite is Big Little Lies by
Liane Moriarity. This one is an extremely popular book and I finally got around to
reading it this year and I had a blast reading this book. The characters in this
book are so enjoyable. It follows three different women. They all have
kindergarteners in the same class and then something really horrible kind of
shakes the community and it kinda talks a lot about motherhood. There are women who are
very judgmental of one another, how they parent, judgmental of each other's
children, and it also talks a lot about friendship
and building bonds within smaller communities like that. But it's a great
mystery, it's a great thriller. I really enjoyed it and the characters are just
spot-on. So definitely check that one out as well if you haven't already. I feel
like I'm the last person on the planet to have read that book. And then the last
book I literally just finished last night but that is The Long Walk by
Stephen King. It was written originally under his pen name Richard Bachman. This
is about a dystopian America where there is a competition every year where a
hundred boys, I believe it's between 12 and 18 years old, they sign up for this
competition called The Long Walk where they walk from I think the border of
Canada and Maine and then they just have to walk as far as they can and they have
to maintain a speed of at least four miles an hour. If they don't maintain
that speed, they get a warning and they can get up to three warnings before they
get shot and killed. So it's really a last-man-standing kind of competition
and the person who wins the competition gets something called "the prize" which is
anything they want for the rest of their life. This book chronicles the entire
walk. The whole book is them walking and you think that wouldn't be a very
interesting book but it's really, really intriguing. Again it's great character
development. There's this great camaraderie that builds between the
contestants and it's just like really chilling at the same time. It's very
gruesome and it's very graphic but it's just - you get so connected with these
characters and you just want to see them succeed even though you know only one
can. So I really enjoyed this book. Gave it five stars and would HIGHLY highly
recommend. The second question is the best sequel that you've read so far this
year and I'm not a big series reader but the best sequel that I've read this year
so far is Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This is the conclusion to
the Illuminae files trilogy and I loved it. I thought it was great. It was super
action-packed. You get to see all the characters that you fell in love with
over the course of the series come together in this final kind of battle
and I just I just really enjoyed it a lot. There are times when I was
fooled. There were times when I was like at the edge of my seat it was really
really well done. It's a great conclusion to the series and if you haven't picked
it up yet definitely do. I was not disappointed by the conclusion to the
series. The third question is a new release that you want to read but you
haven't gotten to yet and for this I picked Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh.
This is something I am going to be reading very soon with Jessica and Andy
I will link both of them down below. We're gonna be buddy reading this and
I'm just so excited to get to this book. I read I Let You Go by her in the fall,
this past fall, and I really enjoyed it, so I'm hoping that I will enjoy her new
release just as much. Number 4 is your most anticipated release for the second
half of the year and for me that's going to be An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by
Hank Green. I've been a John Green fan for a really long time and of course
I've loved the vlogbrothers and when I found out that Hank Green was also
going to be publishing a novel I was very excited and I still really am. It's
an adult novel and I think it has - I think it's a literary fiction novel. It
has to do with Fame and I'm just really intrigued by it. I really want to see how
Hank is as a novelist and I'm really excited for it to come out.
I have already pre-ordered my copy so it should be coming to me right when it
releases in September. But I'm very excited for this one. Number 5 is your
biggest disappointment of the year so far and that for me is The Hating Game
by Sally Thorne. Sorry I know a lot of people really love that book but for me
it was just okay. I didn't hate it. I enjoyed reading it but I went into it
with very high hopes. It was very hyped up for me and so I
went into it and it was only a 3 star read for me. So it was pretty
disappointing. I still really enjoyed it but it wasn't what I thought it would be.
Next question is the biggest surprise so far of the year and for me I have two.
The first one is 2 AM at the Cat's Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino. This is
something that I pulled out of my TBR jar and read and actually really, really
enjoyed. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. This is probably one of the
coziest books that I've ever read. This is set in Philadelphia in the
wintertime around Christmas and I read this in May so I feel like I didn't read
it I liked the perfect time of year to read it. I would definitely recommend to
read it either in cold weather time or around Christmas time, but I really loved
this book. I loved the characters. it takes place over the course of one day
so you kind of get to know the characters on a more personal level in
that way. So this was really surprising to me. I really enjoyed it and I ended up
giving it 5 stars. Another big surprise for me was the
Paper Girls graphic novel series. This is volumes two and three and I've
already returned volume one to the library but I am surprised at how much I
really love this graphic novel series. It's a really interesting sci-fi slash
apocalyptic story that's set in the 80s, but it's also set in a bunch of other
different time periods. So it's kind of hard to describe.
The main characters are from 1988 but they're also meeting all these other
characters from different periods in time. The second one is set in more
modern times. It's 2016 so I'm assuming this one was released in 2016 but
there's lots of references to the United States during that time. I've been really
enjoying this series. I'm very curious to see where it goes. But yeah. This is
probably one of my favorite graphic novel series that I've had the pleasure
of reading so far. So another big surprise for me for sure. Next question
is your favorite new to you author or debut author. I'm gonna go with the new
to you author. I've only read one book by her this year but that's Liane Moriarty.
I know that she has a big catalog of books and I really want to read more of
them but Big Little Lies just kind of really drew me in and let me get to know
her writing style a little bit and I really really enjoy it. So I'm definitely
really interested in picking up more of her stuff and reading more of it because
I feel like her writing really connects well with me. The next question is newest
fictional crush and I didn't answer this question last year. I didn't have an
answer for it but this year I kind of do which is fun.
And I have two answers for this one the first one is Gabe Donnelly from 99 days
by Katie Cotugno. He was clearly the much better pick in my opinion of the two
brothers in that book. He just seemed like a really sweet and genuine person.
And the other person I picked was Adam Parrish from The Raven Cycle. He is
somebody that I definitely root for and I want him to succeed in life and he
just seems like a very like down to earth person. Definitely one of my favorite
boys out of The Raven Cycle series. The next question is your newest favorite
character and I again have two answers for this. The first one is Madeline from
2 AM at the Cat's Pajamas and the other one is Elsa from My Grandmother
Sends Her Regards and Apologizes. These are both two very sassy little girls.
I've been finding that this year I'm like, really enjoying characters who are
young girls who are extremely sassy. Are not afraid to share their opinion and
just kind of really let you know what they're thinking and those are two
characters that definitely do that. That's definitely a character archetype
that I am totally enjoying. Next question is a book that made you cry and I don't
cry at books but I do of course get very sad when I read books and for this I'm
gonna go with Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa.
I continued on with this graphic novel series and it's just a really
heart-wrenching story because it's an autobiographical account... a fictional
slash autobiographical account... it's based on the author's life. So I don't
know how to describe it. It's a fictional story but it's based on true events in
the author's life. Let me know what that is in the comments. But anyway it's about
the Hiroshima bombing during World War two
and what that was like for a Japanese family that we follow throughout this
series and just kind of the aftermath of all of that and of course it is an
extremely sad topic but one that is really important to explore
from a different perspective. Especially because in school we only really get the
American perspective, so it's interesting to get the Japanese perspective as well.
Next question is a book that made you happy and for this I knew instantly what
I had to pick nut that is Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.
I, like most people, flew right through this in the matter of a day. It is such a
cute book. It is so heartwarming and I just really loved it. I am on the Simon
train. I definitely recommend this like everybody else on BookTube. It is great.
Next question is the best book to movie adaptation that you've seen so far this
year. For this I'm gonna go with Ready Player One. Even though the movie itself
was extremely different from the book, there is a lot of things that changed, I
still really enjoyed it. It changed what it needed to change in order for it to
work on the screen and I really liked it. I really liked the adaptation, so... I know
that's a more unpopular opinion but I think I can look past it not matching up
to the story of the book because the story it told visually through the movie
I think was really well done. And then I also started watching The Handmaid's
Tale this year and I've only watched two episodes but it is really good. It's hard
to watch but it is really good. So I need to continue to work on that series but
it's great. I really enjoy it. Number 14 is the most beautiful book that you've
acquired so far this year and for this I'm gonna go with Nevermoor: The
Trials of Morgan Crow by Jessica Townsend.
I think this edition is just so beautiful. It has gold foiling, there is
amazing illustrations on the front and the back, and once you take the dust
jacket off there's more imagery and gold foiling. I just think it's so gorgeous.
This is the UK Edition. I got this off of Book Depository and I think I'll
probably go to Book Depository for these editions for the whole series because I
like these so much more than the Americn editions. And the last question is
what books do you need to read by the end of the year. I'm going to put
Nevermoor on this list because I really want to start reading this series. I know
that the second book comes out later this year. And then of course a book that
everybody's talking about and a book that I really wanted to read in the
month of June but never got around to: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This
is really high up on my TBR. I know that Michael is going to be purchasing this
soon so I think I'm now going to be buddy reading this with him but I am so
excited to get to this. I've heard nothing but really positive things about
this book so I really need to read this by the end of 2018. And that's gonna do
it for today's video and the mid-year book freakout tag for 2018. I hope you
guys enjoyed it. If you did please leave a big thumbs up. Subscribe if you haven't
already. I do try to make a new video each and every week and I'll see you
guys again very soon. Bye!
